Jackson Harold "Jack" Sneed, Sr. - September 08, 1935 - December 14, 2021

Departed: 12/14/2021 (Massillon)
Obituary Preview: Jackson H. Sneed, Sr., 86, of Canal Fulton, passed away Tuesday morning, December 14, 2021.  Born in Lenore, West Virginia, September 8, 1935, a son to the late Aaron and Dolly (Raines) Sneed, Jack spent most of his adult life in Ohio. He retired from Republic Steel Corp., after more than 30 years of faithful service in various production-related and supervisory positions.  An undeniably hard worker, long days and double shifts were not uncommon; he was a good provider and looked to the needs of his wife and family – it’s what a man did.  A devoted husband and a caring and supportive dad and grandpa, Jack showed his affection in different ways.  He was often ornery; liked to kidd, made an art of teasing, and loved to laugh.  His expectations were high.  He’d set an example for us to follow, and we knew he’d have our back, but it was up to us to get the job done and do it right.  He respected you and a job well done!  In his leisure time, you’d find Jack in his garden.  He also loved to hunt and fish.  And when the workday was done, he’d have the checkerboard out or the euchre deck ready and be looking for a partner to take on all comers!
Predeceased by his parents; his dear wife of 43 years, Shirley D. (Geiger) Sneed; a daughter, Kim Sneed Mitchell; his sister, Betsy, and brothers, William and Robert; Jack is survived by his daughter, Suzanna (Todd) Smith, of Canton, and sons, Jackson, Jr., of Doylestown, Jeremiah, of Massillon and Samuel, of Canal Fulton, with whom he resided.  Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kali Mitchell (and Roman Grankin), Madelyn Smith, Abby Smith and Aaron Sneed; along with Jack’s sisters, Pauline, Blanche and Irene, and brother, David Sneed.
Funeral services will be conducted at the noon hour on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon.  Major Thomas Perks of the Salvation Army, Massillon Corps., will officiate and burial will follow at Brookfield Cemetery.  The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the services, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home.  For the safety of all attending, face masks are required, and social distancing protocols will be observed.

Jeane Lois Johns - November 27, 1927 - December 06, 2021

Departed: 12/06/2021 (Massillon)
Obituary Preview: Jeane L. Johns, our beloved mom, grandma and grammy, passed away peacefully Monday evening, December 6, 2021.  She met her Savior with the same humility and quiet confidence that she lived her earthly life.  Born in Massillon, November 27, 1927, a daughter to the late William and Nora (Rhine) Stiffler, mom had just celebrated her 94th birthday.  She graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1945 and had been a full-time homemaker.  A life member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Massillon, her faith community was an extension of her own family and she served all of us with energy, enthusiasm and grace.  She avoided the spotlight but when there was work to be done, she was always there and willing to do more than her share.  Family meant everything to her and she was truly the glue that held us together.  Mom loved to walk.  Not a casual stroll mind you, but at a brisk pace, often putting in several miles before finally turning for home.  And she enjoyed listening to Cleveland Indians baseball on the radio – often during one of her walks.
In addition to her parents, Jeane is predeceased by our dad, Donald V. Johns, who passed away in 1983; two of her grandchildren, Jarrodd Johns and Melissa Kracker; and her two sisters, Shirlee (Stiffler) Luthi and Helen (Stiffler) Little.  She is survived by her daughter, Claudia (Robert) Kracker, and sons, Craig M. (Catherine) and Chris S. (Sharon) Johns, all of Massillon; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Honoring mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon.  The family will receive condolences one hour prior to the service, from 11:00 a.m. until noon, in the funeral home.  For the safety of all attending, face coverings are required, and social distancing protocols will be observed.  The family has suggested memorial contributions made to St. Paul’s Social Welfare & Action Committee.

How long should an obituary be?

Lengths of obituaries vary. Some are brief, just a few sentences long, while others are more detailed and can be several paragraphs in length. It often depends on the individual's or family's preferences and the space available if it’s being published in a newspaper.

Why publish an obituary?

Obituaries serve to inform the community of a person's passing, to honor the deceased, to notify distant friends or relatives, and to provide information about the services so those wishing to attend can do so. It's also a part of the grieving process for many families.

Can you include personal messages in an obituary?

Personal messages, such as final farewells, words of gratitude, or special remembrances, can be included in an obituary. This helps to add a personal touch and to share the character or spirit of the deceased with the community.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is typically a longer, more detailed account of a person's life, while a death notice is a more straightforward announcement of death, often without the extended biography or personal details.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are generally published soon after the death, commonly within one week. This allows time for distant friends and relatives to make arrangements to attend any services and to offer their condolences.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

When writing an obituary, it's recommended to avoid including sensitive personal information that could lead to identity theft, such as the deceased's home address, date of birth, and mother's maiden name. Additionally, any details that the family wishes to remain private should be avoided.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

Newspapers and reputable online platforms often fact-check obituaries for basic information such as the date of death and survivor names. However, the responsibility for accuracy lies primarily with the person submitting the obituary.

How do you handle the deceased’s digital presence in an obituary?

Handling the deceased’s digital presence is not typically covered in an obituary, but families may include information about memorial pages or online guestbooks where people can share memories and condolences.

Is it appropriate to include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and is completely up to the family. In some cases, families may choose to share this detail, especially if the deceased was involved in raising awareness for a particular illness or condition.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after publishing?

Depending on where the obituary was published, updates or corrections may be possible, often with a fee. Contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their policies.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?
