Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It is a written tribute that often includes a brief account of the deceased’s life, significant achievements, information about the funeral or memorial services, and details about surviving family members. Obituaries serve as a method to publicly acknowledge the passing of an individual and inform the community of their contribution to society.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the staff of a newspaper. In the case of public figures, journalists may write the obituary in advance of the person's passing. Funeral homes may also provide obituary writing services as part of their offerings to the bereaved family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed account of a person’s life and is often longer and more personalized. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter statement that announces an individual's passing, usually without the detailed life story. Death notices tend to be more factual and less expensive than obituaries if they are paid listings in publications.

How do you start writing an obituary?

Begin by collecting factual information about the deceased, such as full name, age, date of birth, date of passing, and a list of surviving relatives. Include details about their life such as education, career, hobbies, and philanthropic activities. After gathering this information, compile it in a narrative that reflects the tone and style you believe best represents the individual’s life and legacy.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of passing, cause of death if the family wishes to share it, a brief life story, significant accomplishments, family members, details about the funeral or memorial services, and any other information the family deems important to include. Remember to keep the tone respectful and to honor the life of the deceased.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Obituaries often come with a cost when being published in print newspapers or on some online platforms, usually based on length and any included photographs. However, there are free options available on certain websites, social media platforms, and community boards. Funeral homes may also include an obituary on their website as part of their services.

Why do families publish obituaries?

Families publish obituaries to inform friends, colleagues, and the community of their loved one’s passing, to pay tribute to the deceased’s life, and to provide information regarding funeral or memorial services. Obituaries also act as a historical record and can be a part of the grieving and healing process.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

No, it is not necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary if the family prefers not to disclose this information. The decision to include this detail is entirely up to the family’s level of comfort and wishes.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, first check the publication’s guidelines, which can typically be found on their website. Most newspapers require obituaries to be submitted through an online form or via email. Make sure to provide all the required details and accompany it with any desired photographs, and keep in mind any deadlines for submission.

Can an obituary be posted online without a newspaper?

Yes, an obituary can be posted online independently of newspapers through various platforms such as dedicated memorial websites, social media, or through online obituary services. Many funeral homes also offer the option to publish an obituary on their websites.

What is typically the cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication or platform chosen. Newspaper obituaries are usually priced based on length, the inclusion of a photograph, and sometimes the geographic reach of the publication. Online postings can range from being free to requiring a fee based on the services provided.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days to a week after a person's death to provide timely information about memorial or funeral services. However, there is no strict rule, and timing may depend on various factors such as religious customs, family wishes, or the preparation of the obituary.

Is it acceptable to include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes, including personal anecdotes can provide a more intimate and personalized touch, reflecting the character and spirit of the deceased. These details can help readers connect with the person's life story on a more emotional level.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

If an obituary contains errors or if the family wishes to add additional information after publication, it may be possible to edit it, especially for online obituaries. However, printed obituaries in newspapers cannot be changed once they have gone to print. It is crucial to review and proofread the obituary before submitting it to avoid such issues.

Should young children be listed in an obituary?

Young children can be listed in an obituary if the family desires. This helps in acknowledging family members who are part of the deceased’s life, but it is important to consider privacy concerns, especially in public forums or widely distributed publications.

How can you ensure that an obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

To ensure that an obituary is respectful, focus on the positive aspects of the deceased's life, achievements, and impact on others. Maintain a tone of reverence, and carefully choose words that celebrate and pay homage to their life and legacy. Always have family members or close friends review the obituary before publication.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary; it can range from a few lines to a lengthy tribute. However, keep in mind that newspapers may have specific word limits or charge by the line or word count. Online obituaries may offer more flexibility in length.

How to handle the deceased's social media profiles?

Handling a deceased person’s social media profiles varies by platform. Some, like Facebook, offer the option to memorialize an account, while others may require you to contact customer support for account deactivation. It is helpful to follow the specific processes outlined by each social media platform.

Can obituaries be denied publication?

While it is not common, publication of an obituary can be denied if it contains inappropriate content, violates the publication's policies, or if there is a dispute over the content by the family members. Ensure that the obituary follows the guidelines provided by the publication to avoid such issues.

What should you do if you spot an error in an online obituary?

If you notice an error in an online obituary, contact the platform or website administrator as soon as possible to request corrections. Provide the correct information clearly, and they may assist in making the necessary changes promptly.

What are the privacy considerations when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, consider the privacy and safety of surviving family members, especially when listing minors or sharing addresses and contact information. Limit the amount of personally identifiable information, and respect the family's wishes regarding the level of detail to be shared publicly.
