Steven Wendell Packer - July 14, 1943 - September 16, 2019

Departed: 09/16/2019 (Sandy)
Obituary Preview: Steve Packer was born July 14, 1943 in Brigham City, Utah, to Wendell Jonathan and Arline Packer. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1961. Steve married the love of his life, Linda in 1968 and had three children, Shelly, Ryan, and Mike, whom he cherished. Steve passed away on September 16, 2019 after battling cancer.
Growing up, Steve enjoyed playing basketball, golfing and fly-fishing. After injuring his back in a motorcycle accident, he was limited in what he could do, but his fondness for sports continued on as a fan. In 1978, Steve started coaching his son Ryan in soccer and developed a love for “the beautiful game.” He would spend the next twenty-five years refereeing soccer and coaching Ryan, Mike, and several nephews. Steve became a lifelong fan of the Utah Jazz after they moved to Utah in 1979 and of Real Salt Lake after they were founded in 2004.
Steve worked at Hafer’s for over 40 years where he ran the computer department.  Following his time at Hafer’s he worked as a regional sales representative for Cardone Industries for 11 years before he retired.
Steve surrendered his life to Jesus Christ in early adulthood and then dedicated his life to serving his savior. He was a member of Southeast Christian Church for nearly 50 years and served as an elder and the church accountant. His passion, though, was for studying the Bible and serving as a Sunday School teacher and Bible Study Leader. Steve was devoted to leading his family with the love of Christ.
One of Steve’s greatest joys was to be a grandpa, “Papa,” to his seven grandchildren. He doted on them and they could do no wrong. In the same manner that he supported his children, Steve supported his grandchildren in all that they did. He was committed to attending every school performance, soccer game, gymnastics meet, and dance recital that he could.
Steve is survived by wife, Linda Packer; children, Shelly (Dan), Ryan (Kristyn), and Mike (Jamie); and grandchildren, Noah, Lauren, Adelayde, Brynley, Andrew, Sam, and Joel. He is also survived by his brother Rodney and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Arline Packer and brothers, Stan, Alan, Wayne, and Randell.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 5th at Southeast Christian Church, 1881 East Vine Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84121. There will be a gathering for friends and family at 2:00 pm and the service will begin at 3:00 pm.

Brandon Keith Lanier - January 03, 1999 - June 02, 2019

Departed: 06/02/2019 (Sandy)
Obituary Preview: Brandon Keith Lanier January 3, 1999 – June 2, 2019
Our flaco returned to our Heavenly Father on the morning of June 2, 2019.
Brandon was born on January 3, 1999 in Miami, Florida to Gabriella Galeas and Brian Lanier. He was the third child of four, and was loved so much by his family. As a child, Brandon loved Power Rangers, the red one specifically, and dinosaurs – his favorite movie was The Land Before Time. He was always a happy, energetic and loving boy. His family always made fun of him because he was so little – smaller than his baby brother – but eventually, he outgrew us all.
As a teen and young adult, he loved playing basketball with his older brother and video games with his baby brother. He was a huge basketball and football fan. His favorite teams were the Miami Heat and the New England Patriots. Whenever the Patriots lost the Superbowl, he cried and cried because he was so upset. He loved to spend time with his friends and family and always made an effort to make sure everyone around him was smiling. He was an incredibly selfless person who cared so much for everyone in his life and prioritized everyone else’s needs over his own. In doing this, he made no time to take care of himself. His infectious, big smile lit up every room he walked in and that smile will be missed so much.
He is survived by his loving mother, Gabriella Galeas; his father, Brian Lanier; his big brother, Michael Galeas and his wife, McKayla Aldred; his two nieces, Malaiya and Maiyah Galeas; his big sister, Tatiana Lanier and her fiancé, Zachary Campbell; his baby brother, Brenton Lanier; and his half siblings.

Ethan Adam Sisson - March 17, 1994 - May 31, 2019

Departed: 05/31/2019 (Sandy)
Obituary Preview: Ethan Adam Sisson, unexpectedly passed away on May 31, 2019 in Logan, Utah at the age of 25.  He was born in March of 1994 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mike and Susan Sisson. He resided in Bluffdale, Utah his entire life.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and an active member of the Independence YSA Ward. He attended Riverton High School and participated in the Music Dance Theater program. He was a loving father who relished every moment he spent with his daughter.
Ethan loved the theater, singing show tunes in the shower, performing in plays, and supporting a local drag show. He was blessed with a beautiful tenor singing voice. Whenever he was home, his family knew by the loud music that filled the house. He frequently sang karaoke and was very talented singing any genre of music. The arts were in his blood.
Ethan spent a lot of his life outdoors. He loved camping, boating and swimming, specifically doing the best cannonballs ever. Among his favorite places to be are anywhere spending time with his daughter, camping at Bear Lake, riding the ski lift to the top of the mountain at Sundance Resort, and belting out karaoke with his friends. Ethan, like the rest of his family, is a “live to eat” person. He was an amazing chef, always cooking for friends and family. Picking a favorite food would have been tough, but a recent favorite was pork belly corn dogs. Ethan will be remembered for the impact he had on everyone that met him. With his large stature, he was intimidating; but within minutes of meeting him, he was an instant friend to all. He had the biggest heart, open to everyone no matter where you were in life. He did not judge and was always willing to help other people and reach out to others that may be struggling even though he had his own heavy load he carried. That is evidenced in the deep sorrow and pain in the hearts that everyone who knows him feels from his passing. Ultimately, he did not lose his battle with depression as the depression departed when he did, so technically it was a tie!
He is survived by his beloved young daughter Charlotte Anne; his parents, Michael and Susan (Roberts) Sisson; their children, Devan (Alyssa), Carly, Ryley, Logan, and Braxton; Grandparents Joseph and Phyllis Sisson and Dale and Carol Roberts; his nieces, Caylee, Brooklyn, and Wesley; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by a cherished family dog, Sophie, and way too many cats.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday, June 7 at 11 am at the Bluffdale 5th Ward, 15040 Mountainside Drive, where viewings will be held Thursday, June 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:30 am. Interment will take place at Bluffdale City Cemetery under the care of Aspen Funeral Home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically including a brief biography of the deceased. It's a way to publicly announce the passing and celebrate the life of the individual, providing details about funeral or memorial arrangements, as well as personal and family information expressed in a respectful tone.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers—both local and national—as well as on various online platforms, such as funeral home websites and social media. Some families also choose to include them in community newsletters or church bulletins.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is typically shorter and more factual, focusing mainly on the announcement of death and service details. An obituary is longer, offering a biography of the deceased and may include personal anecdotes, achievements, and messages from the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends, though sometimes funeral home staff or professional writers can be commissioned to craft the narrative.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should be published as soon as the funeral arrangements have been made and confirmed. This typically occurs within a few days to a week after death to allow friends and the community to be informed in a timely manner.

What information is essential to include in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, date of passing, a brief overview of their life, the date and location of the funeral or memorial service, and any memorial or charity where donations can be made in lieu of flowers. It can also include details about the deceased's family, career, and passions.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Most newspapers charge a fee based on length, whether it includes a photo, and other factors. Online obituaries can be free or fee-based depending on the platform.

Can I add a photo in an obituary?

Yes, photos are often included in obituaries to remind the community of who the deceased was and to help personalize the notice. There may be an additional charge to include a photo.

How can I ensure an obituary is respectful?

Using a sincere and earnest tone, focusing on the positive aspects of the deceased’s life, and ensuring all facts are accurate usually results in a respectful obituary. It's also common to have someone else proofread it before publication.

Should I mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal decision and is not required. Some families choose to include it as a way to provide closure or to inform about diseases that may be of public concern, while others prefer to keep this information private.

Is there a standard obituary format I should follow?

While there's no set format, a typical obituary includes an announcement of death, personal biography, list of surviving family members, funeral or memorial details, and any special messages for donations or acknowledgements.

What do I do if I miss an important fact in the obituary?

If an important fact is overlooked in the obituary, a correction or additional information can often be published in the newspaper or updated on online platforms where it was originally posted.

Can friends and extended family contribute to an obituary?

Absolutely. It's common for friends and extended family to contribute anecdotes, stories, or other meaningful contributions to the obituary to help capture a fuller picture of the deceased’s life and influence.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's typically between 200 and 600 words, depending on the level of detail the family wishes to include and the costs associated with publication.

What tone should I aim for in writing an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and commemorative. It may also reflect the personality of the deceased, ranging from formal and serious to light-hearted or even humorous, if appropriate.

Is it necessary to include a request for donations?

While not necessary, including a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers is a meaningful way to honor the deceased by supporting causes that were important to them.

Should an obituary mention predeceased family members?

Yes, it's common to mention predeceased family members to acknowledge relationships and the family’s history. It provides a context of life and is a sign of respect to those who have gone before.

Can an obituary serve as a notice for a memorial service?

Yes, obituaries often include the time, date, and location of any upcoming funeral or memorial services to inform friends, acquaintances, and others who may wish to attend and pay their respects.

How do I handle errors in an obituary after it's published?

If errors are discovered after publication, reach out to the newspaper or website to see if a correction can be made. Most publishers are understanding and willing to correct mistakes, especially in print editions of their next issue.

What if the deceased didn't want an obituary?

If the deceased expressed wishes not to have an obituary, those wishes should be respected. Alternatives to public obituaries include private letters to friends and family, or a personal remembrance shared at a memorial service.

How can I add a personal touch to an obituary?

Including personal details such as hobbies, interests, favorite sayings, or special memories can add a personal touch to an obituary. These nuances contribute to commemorating the unique life of the individual and allowing readers to connect on a more personal level.
