What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased’s full name, age, date of death, and sometimes the cause of death. It may also feature a short biography, list of surviving family members, details about the funeral or memorial service, and information on where to send flowers or donations.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by close family members, but sometimes friends, colleagues, or even professional writers hired by the family may contribute to crafting the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a local newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a local newspaper, you can contact the newspaper’s obituary department for their submission guidelines, which will typically include formatting requirements, deadlines, and costs. Obituary notices are often subject to fees based on length and any photographs you wish to include.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed remembrance that celebrates a person’s life and is often written by family or friends. A death notice, on the other hand, is a brief announcement of the death that is usually written by the funeral home, containing just the basic facts and service information.

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, the length of the obituary, and whether a photograph is included. Prices can range from a small fee to several hundred dollars. It’s best to contact the publication directly for specific pricing.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary, and it is entirely a personal choice. Some families choose to include this information, while others prefer to keep it private.

Can I add personal anecdotes or stories to an obituary?

Absolutely, personal anecdotes or stories enrich an obituary by sharing unique aspects of the deceased's life with the community. They help to personalize the obituary and allow readers to connect with the individual's life story.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

There is no set length for an obituary, but typically they range from a few sentences to several paragraphs. The length may depend on the amount of information the family wishes to share and the cost considerations of the publishing newspaper or website.

Should an obituary be written in first person or third person?

Obituaries are generally written in the third person to maintain a formal tone. However, some families may choose a first-person approach, especially in cases where the obituary takes the form of a personal farewell letter.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should be published as soon as possible after the death, ideally within a few days. This helps to inform the community and friends promptly, enabling them to make plans to attend services or offer condolences to the family.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral service?

Obituaries are typically published before the funeral service to notify the community of the passing and provide details of the service time and location. This allows individuals who wish to pay their respects to attend the funeral or memorial service.

Can an obituary be published online only?

Yes, an obituary can be published online only. Many families choose digital platforms or online memorial websites for broader reach and sometimes as a cost-saving option compared to traditional print publication.

What should be done if an error is found in an obituary after publication?

If an error is found in an obituary after publication, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to request a correction. Most publications are understanding and will make the necessary changes quickly.

How can one make an obituary stand out?

To make an obituary stand out, include unique details about the person's life, such as their hobbies, passions, or impactful moments. Using a more narrative style, including photographs, and selecting meaningful quotes or poems can also give an obituary a special touch.

Is it acceptable to include humor in an obituary?

Including humor in an obituary can be acceptable if it reflects the personality of the deceased and is done tastefully. It's essential to be mindful of the feelings of all readers, particularly those in mourning.

Can an obituary serve as a call to action for a cause or charity?

Yes, it's quite common for an obituary to include a call to action, such as inviting donations to a particular charity or cause that was important to the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and legacy.

How should I start writing an obituary?

Can a family choose not to publish an obituary?

Yes, publishing an obituary is a personal decision, and a family may choose not to publish one for various reasons, such as privacy concerns or personal preferences. There are no legal obligations to publish an obituary.

What are some considerations when choosing an obituary photo?
