Robert E. Howell - October 21, 1944 - March 12, 2024

Departed: 03/12/2024 (Honesdale)
Obituary Preview: Robert Emerson Howell, the son of Alfred Emerson Howell and Marie Stover-Howell died on March 12, 2024 at his home in Prompton, PA. Robert was a brother of Alfred Howell and the late Walter Howell and Jane Wacker. He is survived by his wife Joan and a loving family. He was a resident of Northeast Pennsylvania for nearly his entire lifetime.
Mr. Howell was born October 21, 1944 to Alfred Emerson Howell, a Honesdale lawyer for many years, and Marie Stover-Howell, a teacher. Bob graduated from Honesdale High School in 1962. He then attended a 5 year pharmacy program at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science earning his bachelors of science in pharmacy. After passing the State Board exams, he began his career as an assistant manager for Rea & Derick drug store in Lewisburg, PA where he and his first wife and newly born daughter spent two years before returning to Honesdale and transferring his job to the Carbondale location. From there Robert accepted a job at Wayne Memorial Hospital and was tasked with forming and operating the first pharmacy department for the hospital. There he led the department by adding the first IV additive program, medication unit-dose program and daily filling of medications for the patients. Upon leaving, that department grew to two additional pharmacists and three technicians backed by first-generation computer power.
The hospital next asked Mr. Howell to build a for profit addition for the organization and Wayne Health Equipment was born. They sold and rented medical equipment and further evolved by opening the Narrowsburg Pharmacy in Narrowsburg, NY. After this part of his journey was complete he left the hospital as an employee and became a tenant by opening his own retail pharmacy, Medicine And Things. This store led into becoming a Medicine Shoppe franchise that he ran until retiring in 2012.
During the time of running his own business he used online learning to obtain a Doctor of Naturopathy Diploma from Clayton College of Natural Health. He enjoyed speaking with his customers and adding natural products to their lives giving them the best health they could have.
When Bob wasn't busy with pharmacy, he enjoyed his lifelong getaway at Elk Lake. His great grandfather built a cottage there in the 1920's. Swimming, boating, fishing and the conversations on the front yards of the neighborhood put a smile on his face. Through the years Bob enjoyed skiing locally and many family ski trips to various destinations. He also enjoyed the occasional fishing outing and the comradery that goes along with them. Woodworking would also occupy his time making various items from tables to clever storage spaces. As a younger man he spent some time in the woods hunting, that part didn't really stick though, as he hadn't gone in some time. In retirement he purchased land in Dyberry and put up a small cabin. He said he liked seeing the wildlife there and working with his tractor and other equipment.
Mr. Howell was surrounded by a loving family. He had two children with his first wife, Mae Megivern Howell. They are Renee' Fawn Bergmann and Robert Emerson Richard Howell. He added two stepchildren with his marriage to Joan. They are Krista Kowalczyk (husband Scott) and Amy Foley (husband Chris). He was also adored by his grandchildren Wesly Foley, Gabby Foley, Elise Foley, Olivia Shears and Danielle Bergmann.
The Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 17, 2024 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 Main St., Honesdale, PA. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Lloyd Canfield officiating.

Myrna F. Bates - February 15, 1936 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Honesdale)
Obituary Preview: Myrna F. Bates, 88, of Honesdale, PA entered her eternal home into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She will be reunited with her beloved husband of 46 years, Richard and her daughter, Debra Joy amongst a host of relatives and friends who have gone before her. What an amazing day to behold.
Myrna loved life and had her fair share of earthly accolades. She loved her sports (HS basketball, women's softball, church volleyball and bowling). She also loved to grow her vegetables and compete in the local fairs. (WCF and GDS). She was the Lady to beat! " Mom was always amazed at how a tiny seed planted could produce a crop." She was such a perfectionist and that is a hard act to follow. That said, none of these accomplishments compared to the love and focus on her Lord and Savior and the blessings of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandson.
Myrna cherished her Tabernacle Bible church family and looked forward to the Annual Valentine's Day banquets and Ladies Fellowship Mother and Daughter banquets. She worked for hours, with many of her friends at church, crafting the favors for place settings, special bulletins for programs and participated in decorating the church for these joyous occasions.
Myrna loved her HHS classmates of 1954 as they enjoyed getting together monthly and going out for meals, reminiscing and fellowshipping together. She looked forward to the thoughtful cards of encouragement and reading the signatures to us. In recent days, Myrna found new love for her caregivers, residents and staff at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She enjoyed the company of her newly adopted family. God bless each of them.
Her husband Richard, daughter Debra Joy, brother Gerald Rockwell, grandson Brian Keith Branning, along with parents and in-laws, all brother/sister in-laws and her good friend Robert James Perry, preceded Myrna in eternal life.
Myrna is survived by her children, Donna L. Branning and husband Terry, Beach Lake, Richard A. Bates, Jr and wife Kim, Beach Lake, Kenneth B. Bates and wife JoAnn, Honesdale, Robin F. Bates, Honesdale and our "adopted" sister, Denise Geffken, Honesdale. She is also survived by grandchildren: TJ Branning and Becky Curly, Chad Branning, Rick and (wife) Angela Bates, Melissa and (husband) Mike Heimbach, of Selingsgrove, PA, Amanda Bates of VA, Vanessa and (husband) James Lancellotti of VA, Jonathan R. Bates, Katie Bates and Jeremey Rotundo and Great Grandchildren: Zach, Aviana, Raegan, Aaron/Lexi, Anna and Avery Branning,, Carson and Nolan Bates, Gabe and Nate Heimbach and Weston Meszler and Elena Rotundo-Bates and a Great, Great Grandson: Colt Branning. Precious memories made. Myrna had a very special Bible verse to share with everyone:
(KJV) Psalm 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that I will seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in His temple.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Pastor John S. Banks will officiate at the graveside service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove St., Honesdale, PA 18431-1001. Arrangements are being directed by Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale PA 18431 (570) 253-0260

Joan Navarra - October 16, 1932 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Honesdale)
Obituary Preview: Joan (Corbett) Navarra, a beloved wife, mother, "Nonny" and friend to just about everybody she met, passed away on February 16th, 2024 at her home in Honesdale, PA, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born on October 16th, 1932 in Bloomingdale, NJ to Richard Corbett and Emma (Drew) Corbett. They instilled in her the values of kindness and compassion that she carried with her throughout her life. As a youth, she loved spending time with her siblings and cousins, and it wasn't unusual for just a little bit of mischief to follow in her footsteps.
Joan's journey through life was marked by love and devotion. She met the love of her life, Joseph Navarra, and they shared a beautiful marriage in 1956 that spanned decades. Together they built a home filled with warmth and two daughters. Joan held several jobs through the years, including a telephone operator for Bell and as a school crossing guard, where she was beloved by both the children and community.
Never one to turn her back on friendship or adventures, "Nonny" lived a life that was filled to the brim with both. Her and Joe took countless trips across the country with car clubs for decades, and would always make the time to chat with any friends that might call or drop by. After moving west and settling in the wilderness of Carley Brook, she recruited all 8 of her grandchildren to join her expeditions to flea markets, fairs, festivals, water parks and just about everywhere. Wherever Nonny went, an army of miniature minions would surely follow. She was the life of every party she attended, and always the first to the dance floor.
Joan was the epitome of independence. She was an early riser that kept busy maintaining an immaculate home, tending to her flowers, shopping with her daughters, cooking meals for herself and any company that might stop by and of course, reading her tabloid magazines. Even if a task seemed impossible, she would give it her all until someone would heroically step in and help. As busy as her days might get, she always had enough energy for nightly phone calls with family and of course, Saturday night Pennsylvania polka on tv.
Joan made every minute of every day count, and she will be missed dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Navarra; a brother, Richard Corbett Jr.; and two sisters, Edna (Corbett) Thomson and Ethel (Corbett) Messina.
Joan is survived by two daughters and their spouses; Debra and Frankie Alvarez of White Mills and Donna and Joey Ranner of Carley Brook. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and their partners; Sara and Brian Hoey, Joseph & Lea Ann Ranner, Michael & Emily Johnson, Eric & Julia Ranner, Steven & Kelly Johnson, Emmalee & Tyler Young, Zachary Ranner, and Katie Ranner & fiance Alec Dragos. She is also survived by 7 great grandchildren.
A private service was held Tuesday, February 20th at Bryant's Funeral Home in Honesdale.

James George Firmstone - May 07, 1942 - November 26, 2023

Departed: 11/26/2023 (Honesdale)
Obituary Preview: James G. Firmstone, aged 81 of Honesdale PA, died Sunday, November 26, 2023, at Wayne Memorial Hospice after a brief illness. Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Garing) Firmstone.
Born May 7, 1942, at the then progressive birthing home above Bullock's Grocery Store in Honesdale, to the late George Firmstone and Edith (Howell) Firmstone. This birthing facility was located directly across Main Street from the family's service station. Jim liked to say he was born on the east side of Main Street and didn't get any further than the opposite side of the street. But the truth is he lived a full life that took him far and wide.
Jim graduated from Honesdale High School with the class of 1960, and continued his education at SUNY Morrisville, where he received his degree in Automotive Technology. After finishing his formal education, Jim married his high school sweetheart, and the couple started a family. After the passing of his father George, Jim joined his brother John in managing the family's petroleum distribution business, Firmstone Oil Company.
Hunting, Fishing and Golfing were among his passions. Jim was a member of The Welcome Lake Rod and Gun Club and the Honesdale Golf Club. He fondly remembered fishing trips to Henderson Harbor, NY with his sons Steven, Ronald and his grandson Landon, and earlier trips to the Thousand Islands with friends and their children.
Throughout the years Jim enjoyed an active life including snow skiing, water skiing, snowmobiling, scuba diving, and attending professional baseball games and Penn State Football games. Many of those pleasures were passed on to his children and grandson. He "endured" a friendly football rivalry between his New York Giants and his grandson's misaligned devotion towards the Dallas Cowboys.
A highlight of Jim's life was the countless summer days spent at the family cottage on Elk Lake (near Waymart) where he enjoyed leisure time with his many friends and extended family that included his cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Jim would often be seen walking Main Street in his beloved hometown, making daily trips to the post office and bank. He loved to visit with customers at his family's gas station.
In the 1980's and into the 90's Jim served as Vice-President of The Honesdale Borough Council. During this time, Jim worked on the committee to help create passenger train rail excursions on the Stourbridge Line. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Number 218 in Honesdale, and for many years helped organize an annual golf tournament to raise funds for the Shriners Children's Hospital.
Jim was also a member of many organizations including Protection Engine Company #3, the Honesdale Area Jaycees, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, the Honesdale Zoning Board, the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association, the Irem Temple, and he served as President of the Wayne-Pike Shrine Club.
On Sundays Jim attended the Honesdale Christadelphian Chapel and enjoyed afternoon car rides with his wife and daughter Lisa, admiring the beauty of Wayne County while visiting family and friends.
In addition to his wife Shirley, Jim is survived by a loving family including his two sons, Steven G. Firmstone and his wife Michelle, Ronald J. Firmstone and his wife Karen, daughter Lisa B. Firmstone, his grandson Landon J. Firmstone, and his sister Elizabeth "Betsy" Hattersley, all of Wayne County.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John A. Firmstone.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital, especially those in Security, Emergency Care, Intensive Care and Hospice for their incredible attention and compassion during their time of need. God shows his love through each one of them. For this, they are grateful.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 11 am in the Wesley Room of the Central United Methodist Church, 205 11th Street, Honesdale with the Revs Eric Funk and Norm Demming officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Friday December 1, 2023, also in the Wesley Room of the Church. Arrangements are being provided by The Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, Honesdale, PA.
Memorial contributions can be made to The Wayne County Community Foundation-YMCA Building Project Fund, 918 Church Street, Suite F, Honesdale, PA 18431, or the donor's favorite charity.

Martha Freeman Sader - January 09, 1941 - October 09, 2023

Departed: 10/09/2023 (Honesdale)
Obituary Preview: Martha Taylor Freeman Sader 1941 – 2023
Martha Taylor Freeman Sader, 82, of Honesdale, died peacefully at home on October 9. Martha lived life on her terms, was devoted to her family and community, and was a loyal friend to many. She is survived by her sister, Rachael Freeman Baldwin Wood and brother-in-law Harry Wood, Indian Harbour Beach, FL, and her children: Pamela Freeman Sader Treanor and husband Michael Treanor, Hawley; Melissa Taylor Sader, New York City; and Edward Emanuel Sader, his partner Jill C. Carletti, grandson Ean Edward Sader, Honesdale, and many cousins from the Katz, Taylor and Tyler families.
Born in Honesdale in 1941 to Marian Grace Taylor Freeman and Edward Lincoln Freeman, Martha graduated Moravian Seminary for Girls (1958) and from Goucher College (1962) with a bachelor's degree in American Studies and a minor in Comparative Religion. Upon graduation, she lived and worked in New York City, returning to Honesdale in 1965 to raise her own family in the community that she loved.
Martha's home on North Main Street was open to all and she took great pride in creating memorable and fun experiences for her guests. 1510 was a beacon of warmth, with every light glowing well into the evening. Whether it was Friday night cocktails with Lenny Weiss or a formal gathering, she was a gracious hostess who thrived on entertaining and having family and friends enjoy fabulous times around the dining room table and throughout the house. She loved throwing all kinds of parties: picnicking and parade-watching on the sidewalk, holidays and birthdays, bridge nights, and especially her legendary New Year's Eve gatherings.
Always social, Martha loved visiting around town and could often be found at one of the extended family's homes, sitting on Ann Bursis' kitchen counter or in the back room with Sally Weiss at 315 16th Street. Later in life she enjoyed living at beautiful and peaceful Kellows Pond in the property developed by the family in 1952.
Outside of the home, Martha was an avid horsewoman, a hobby she enjoyed with her daughter Pamela and many great horsey friends. Forever happy to be On the Road Again to a horse show, she could be seen with a big smile and feather in her hat behind the wheel of the truck hauling horses down Main Street to and from the barn. Her love of animals extended to her beloved collie dogs and rescued mutts, all of which most certainly greeted her at the Rainbow Bridge.
Following in her family's long history of community service, Martha served on the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was elected to the Wayne Memorial Hospital Board in 1976. In 1983, she became Board Secretary, and then became the first woman Chair of Wayne Memorial Health System in 1993. After her term as Chair, she joined the Wayne Memorial Health Foundation Board of Trustees. She fondly remembered her years of service at Wayne Memorial, especially working closely with Paul Meagher, Ray Hamill, Nancy Gumble, Tom Shepstone, Ingrid Warshaw, Richard Moore, G. Richard Garman, Dr. James Gay, Milton Roegner, Bill Chatlos, Cathy Howell, and Dr. Harry Propst among others.
Martha's service in the community included the first Honesdale Borough Planning Commission, the organizing committee of the Stourbridge Lion Sesquicentennial (1979), Wayne County Land Preservation Board, a Trustee of Congregation Beth Israel, and a Trustee of Dublin School in New Hampshire. She was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Israel, a lifetime member of Honesdale Golf Club and a member of the Honesdale Country Club. Over many decades, she was involved in numerous community efforts; she valued life in Honesdale and doing all she could to help the community and Wayne County thrive.
She ran unsuccessfully in 2008 for Wayne County Commissioner but thoroughly enjoyed traveling throughout the county and meeting people. This reminded her of her grandfather, Forrest Taylor, who was past Treasurer and Sherriff, and her great-grandfather, George W. Taylor, who was a County Commissioner at the turn of the 20th century.
The family would like to thank her care team, especially Dr. James Cruse and Dr. Julianne O'Boyle, as well as Karon Shaffer, Margaret McDonald, Samantha Sacco, Amanda Krom, Charlene Whitmore, Kristen Knash, Ginny Fries, and Jessica Tuttle who are among the incredibly dedicated and compassionate staff at Wayne Memorial Hospice.
