Dorothea Ann (Dolan) Guess - June 23, 1935 - November 22, 2018

Departed: 11/22/2018 (Tampa)
Obituary Preview: "Hilarious; the funniest person I ever knew; a firecracker; a "trip"...these are a few of the words used to describe a woman who could not be adequately defined, yet had so much impact to those who met her. Whether you knew Dorothy for years or had just cashed her out at the Dollar Store, you were left either laughing or wonderfully stunned in the wake of her continual comments and observations.
What truly defines a life of impact and significance? Relationships. Dorothy was curious and caring. Interested in people, she took the time to learn about them. Dorothy was regularly included in social circles of her adult children as well as enjoying going out to breakfast with her college aged granddaughter and her friends. She enjoyed the company of people as much as they enjoyed hers.
She understood the real value of life...to appreciate and be grateful for what you have. Savor the seemingly "small" things...a brewed cup of coffee, the newspaper regularly delivered, lunch with a friend, being with family and helping out with their daily laundry and dishes because she could remember and appreciate the work needed in raising her own family.
Dorothy's humor will be her most well remembered trait, but what also defined her, more personally to her family, was her resilient nature. Her heart of gratefulness springs from decades of personal trials and her faith in the Lord. With integrity and determination, she did not succumb to, but rose up to the challenges that came her way as she kept her sights on the goal of successfully raising her family.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Dorothy was married for 29 years to Harry C. Guess, who passed away in 1992. She was predeceased by her father, William P. Dolan, and beloved brother, Gerald, of Dallas, Texas. Her "mothers in love" were Zita Trabert and Dorothy's aunt, Helene (Dolan) Walsh. Dorothy will be forever missed by her daughter, Sally (Guess) DePalma; son-in-law, Richard; granddaughters, Allison and Leah of Tampa; daughter, JoAnn Guess of Detroit; "daughter in love", Hilary Staszak of Connecticut, and friends and family between Tampa and Western New York.

Malti Punwani - February 12, 1954 - July 15, 2018

Departed: 07/15/2018 (Tampa)
Obituary Preview: Malti R. Punwani February 12, 1954 – July 15, 2018
Malti R. Punwani peacefully departed for her heavenly home on July 15, 2018 in her residence of Tampa, Florida with her husband, sister, son, daughter, and dog by her side. She will be vividly remembered for her beautiful smile, her pure heart of gold, and her passion for life.
Malti was born on February 12, 1954 in Bombay, India to Mr. Ghanshyamdas and Mrs. Eshwari Khemani. She married her husband, Ratan Punwani, on October 12, 1979 in Dubai. The couple then migrated to the US to Staten Island, NY in 1980 and had two children – one elder son, Vishal, and daughter, Natasha. She also lived with her sister, Chandra, who stood by her side for 61 years.
Malti worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for 10 years in Manhattan. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1990 and fearlessly underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Her journey after surviving cancer was not an easy one and her battles were not like most - and yet she persevered through all of them with positive energy, high spirits, and a laughter that many people were lucky enough to be infected by. She survived for 28 years after her diagnosis, against all odds, as a devout homemaker and loving, peaceful individual. Malti was both the matriarch and the family miracle.
Truly trusting in her relationship with God, Malti assuredly knew He protected her and that her journey was written by Him. She never feared future obstacles and dedicated her life to living it fully and simply, assuring happiness in her household. She embraced new experiences with an adventurous and open heart.
She was re-diagnosed with a brain tumor in February 2018 and true to her spirit, with the support of her family and friends, utilized her positive attitude as her weapon of combat. She fought until the very end and although she departed from this world early, her time on earth was spent blessing her family with the tools of strength, courage, and appreciation for precious moments spent together.
Family and friends are invited to a prayer ceremony, kirtan, and langar to be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Tampa Gurudwara: 15302 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotosassa, FL, 33592.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, usually published in a newspaper or online. It often includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial services, and can include a photo. Obituaries serve to inform the community and pay tribute to the person who has passed away.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they serve as an official announcement of someone’s passing. They not only notify friends, acquaintances, and the community of the loss, but also provide important details about services. Furthermore, they often celebrate the life of the deceased, highlighting their achievements and the impact they had on those around them.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or occasionally by the deceased prior to their passing. At other times, a funeral director or a writer at the local newspaper may compose the obituary, sometimes with the assistance of the family.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should generally include the full name of the deceased, their age, the date and place of passing, a list of surviving family members, a brief life history, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any preferred charities for memorial contributions. Personal anecdotes, special achievements, and messages of thanks may also be included.

How do you start writing an obituary?

To start writing an obituary, collect the basic information about the deceased, such as full name, age, date of birth, and date of death. Then, gather details about their life, including significant personal and professional milestones, information about the funeral or memorial services, and thoughts on their legacy.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary but is typically between 200 and 600 words. It should be long enough to include all pertinent information and personal touches but concise enough to hold the reader's attention. Newspaper space may also dictate the length.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of the deceased's life and is often written in a narrative form. It includes biographical details, achievements, and personal stories. A death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement that may only list the name, date of death, and information about the funeral services.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral?

Obituaries are usually published as soon as possible after death, often before the funeral or memorial service to inform people of the upcoming event. However, some obituaries may be published afterwards, particularly if they are more of a life tribute than a service announcement.

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary can incur a cost, particularly in newspapers where fees are based on length and whether a photograph is included. Online obituaries may be free on some platforms, while others charge a fee. Costs can vary widely, so it’s best to check with the individual publication or website.

Can an obituary be published in multiple places?

Yes, obituaries can be published in various places including local and national newspapers, online obituary services, funeral homes' websites, and social media. Multiple publications can ensure that a wider audience is reached, including those in different geographical locations.

How can I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, double-check all factual information with reliable sources. It’s important to verify dates, spellings of names, biographical details, and service times. Having another family member or close friend review the obituary can also help catch any errors.

What is an appropriate way to express condolences in response to an obituary?

Expressing condolences can be done through a written message, such as a sympathy card, an online comment, or a phone call. Your message should be heartfelt and respectful, acknowledging the loss and offering support to the family of the deceased.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include details of preferred charities for donations in lieu of flowers. This information can be provided in the obituary, specifying the charity’s name and, if desired, contact details or a link to make a donation.

What if I make a mistake in an obituary?

If a mistake is made in an obituary, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. Many newspapers and websites will correct factual errors in print or online, although this may come with additional costs if re-publication is required.

How do I choose a photo for an obituary?

Choose a photo that accurately represents the deceased and one that the family believes is fitting. It could be a recent picture or a photo from earlier in their life. Make sure the photo is clear and of good quality.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary. This is a personal choice for the family, and there is no obligation to disclose this information unless the family wishes to do so.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should be published as soon as practical after death, typically within a few days. This timing allows for the community to be informed and to arrange to attend any services. Some families may choose to wait until after the funeral to publish a more extensive tribute.

What tone should an obituary have?

An obituary can range from solemn and respectful to celebratory and affectionate, depending on the personality of the deceased and the family's wishes. A balance of professionalism and empathy is typically advisable, which honors the departed's life and acknowledges the grief of those left behind.

Can you include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Certainly, incorporating meaningful quotes, poems, or scriptures can add a personal touch to an obituary, reflecting the beliefs or personality of the deceased. Choose ones that resonate with the family or were favored by the departed.

How do I address predeceased and surviving family members?

In an obituary, predeceased family members can be mentioned first, followed by a list of surviving relatives. It is common practice to list immediate family members and significant others, though every family may structure this differently based on their preferences.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, writing your own obituary is a personal choice and can be a meaningful way to express your life story and wishes for remembrance. It can also alleviate the burden on family members during a time of grief if they have a document to refer to or publish.

Is it possible to update an obituary?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be updated. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated. If there is a significant error or omission, the family can publish a corrected or additional notice at their discretion.
