An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often including a brief account of their life, significant accomplishments, and information about the funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to notify the community and to honor the deceased.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members or friends of the deceased, but can also be written by funeral home staff or by a professional writer if the family solicits their services.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries can be published in various places, including local newspapers, online obituary websites, social media platforms, and sometimes in professional or community newsletters.

What details are typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life, surviving family members, details of the service, and any preferred charities for donations.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary. It can be a brief notice or a detailed account of the deceased's life. The length often depends on the space available in the publication and the wishes of the family.

Are there differences between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes. A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, usually with minimal details, whereas an obituary is more detailed and often includes a biography and personal anecdotes.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published as soon as possible after death, often within a few days, to promptly inform the community and to allow them to make arrangements to attend services.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies based on factors such as length, publication venue, and geographical location. Newspapers usually charge by line, word, or column inch.

Should a photograph be included with an obituary?

Including a photograph with an obituary is optional, but it can provide a visual remembrance for those who knew the deceased. Some publications might charge an additional fee for a photograph.

How can an obituary be personalized?

An obituary can be personalized by reflecting the unique life of the deceased, sharing special memories, quotes, or passages, and highlighting their personality and the impact they had on others.

What if the deceased had no significant accomplishments?

An obituary doesn't need to focus on significant accomplishments. It can emphasize personal attributes, relationships, hobbies, or any aspect of life that was meaningful to the deceased and loved ones.

Can an obituary be too personal or detailed?

While an obituary should be a respectful and loving tribute, it should also be appropriate for a wide audience. Personal details that may be sensitive or too private for public disclosure should be left out.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary unless the family wishes to share this information. The decision to include this detail is a personal choice and should be respected.

How do you handle listing survivors in an obituary?

Survivors are typically listed in a specific order: spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, siblings, and then extended family. It's important to be inclusive while also being careful about privacy concerns.

How can one ensure the accuracy of an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, thoroughly review and fact-check all details before submission, and possibly have another family member or friend review it as well to catch any errors.

Can an obituary include charitable donation information?

Yes, it is common for obituaries to include information on a preferred charity for donations in lieu of flowers, especially if this reflects a cause important to the deceased.

There are no strict legal requirements for writing an obituary. However, it should be truthful and respect privacy, and, if published in a newspaper, meet the publication's guidelines.

What should be done if an error is found in an obituary after publication?

If an error is found after publication, contact the publication immediately to see if a correction or retraction can be made. Speed is important to correct the information promptly.

Is it possible to publish an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

It is possible to publish a retrospective obituary, whether to mark an anniversary of the person's death or because an obituary was never published at the time of death.

How can one handle negative aspects of the deceased's life in an obituary?

If there are less favorable aspects of the deceased's life that are well-known, it's often best to focus on the positive or to omit mentioning those aspects altogether. The obituary should be a respectful remembrance.

Can an obituary be updated or changed after publication?

Once an obituary has been published, particularly in print, it cannot usually be updated or changed. Online obituaries may be more flexible, but it is important to finalize the content before publication to avoid this issue.

Is it okay to use humor in an obituary?

Humor can be used in an obituary if it aligns with the personality of the deceased and is in good taste. The comfort level of the audience and appropriateness for the venue should be considered.
