Barbara Davenport - May 03, 1934 - December 26, 2021

Departed: 12/26/2021 (Upland)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Davenport, 87, Upland, passed away on December 26, 2021. Barb was born May 3, 1934, in Long Beach, California to Rodric and Ellen (Tench) Ballard. Her father was the Long Beach Director of Recreation and she grew up on athletic courts, football and track fields, baseball diamonds, and playgrounds. Her favorite place to be, though, was the beach. Barb married Bob Davenport in 1953 while they were both students at UCLA, where they had their first two children, Dani and Dane. They settled in Upland, Indiana in 1959 where Bob became the football coach at Taylor University. It took a lifetime for Barb to get accustomed to a small town and long, cold winters. She said she was "environmentally really unhappy" for a long time and especially disappointed to learn, early on, that March didn't bring beautiful weather. At the end of their first year in Indiana, she said if she had $45.00 she would have purchased a one-way ticket to California and taken herself and the kids back. However, she, in time, felt that God wanted her in Upland, and she worked to make it her home. Barb has had a profound impact on her community. She was instrumental in having kindergarten added to the Eastbrook School District. She made sure that the elementary schools had playgrounds. She coordinated and coached local summer softball leagues for girls. She started a summer day camp called Fun in the Sun, which combined Barb's two favorite things, playing games and learning about Jesus. If Barb saw a need in the community, she worked to fill it. She even talked the local grocery store into selling taco shells, something she missed from her days in California. Barb was active in Upland's Helping Hand and was a board member for the Pregnancy Help Center. She was also a member of the Upland Community Church. She worked with elementary kids through the Kids Hope organization. Barb's favorite story is about her relationship with Jesus and how she learned, through Campus Crusade for Christ at UCLA, that Jesus was a companion and a friend. Learning that Jesus had died as a ransom for her so that she could be reconciled to God the Father and walk in fellowship with Him revolutionized her whole being. Barb's relationship with Jesus guided her entire life. In the early 1960s, she started a women's prayer group at Taylor that met on Thursday and prayed for Taylor faculty and personnel. This prayer group still meets, and Barb personally credits a lot of what God has done at Taylor University to the work of the Thursday morning group. Barb has served as a team leader for several cross-country and overseas bicycle trips through Wandering Wheels, an organization she founded with Bob Davenport in 1966. Barb absolutely loved to travel, going all over the world, usually leading groups of students or bikers. Her favorite travelers, though, were her grandchildren who she treated to a "grandma trip" when each of them turned 10. She took her grandchildren all over the country, visiting Disneyworld, Legoland, Hershey Park, The San Diego Zoo, New York City, and Niagara Falls. Barb grew to love Taylor as if she had been here all her life. In fact, she finished her undergrad degree at Taylor, graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She went on to get her Master of Arts Degree at Ball State, graduating in 1989. After graduating, Barb worked at Anderson University as an assistant registrar. In 1993 she was hired as the registrar at Taylor University. In 1998, she moved into a program at Taylor called AIM, an academic intensive module, that worked with at-risk students. She retired from Taylor in 2004. After her parents passed away, she established a football scholarship in her parents' name.Barb is survived by her children, Dani (Neil) Williams, Dane (Laurie) Davenport, Daphne (Drew) Howes and Dawn Davenport, 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Rodelyn McPherson. She was preceded in death by her parents; Rodric and Ellen Ballard; sibling's; Eddy (Bev) Davenport and Dex (Lynn) Davenport; and grandson; Beau WilliamsBarb loved helping people in need; therefore, in lieu of flowers please send donations to Helping Hands (Upland Community Church at 439 West Berry Avenue, Upland, Indiana, 46989).A memorial service will be held Friday, January 28, 2022, at 1:00 PM, located at Upland Community Church, (439 E 600 S Upland, IN 46989) with Pastor Mark Biehl officiating. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, usually including a brief biography of the deceased. It's published in newspapers, online memorial sites, and sometimes in funeral programs. The primary purpose is to inform the community of the person's passing and to outline the forthcoming funeral or memorial arrangements.

Why is it important to write an obituary?

Writing an obituary is important for several reasons. It acts as a formal announcement of death and informs friends, family, and the community of the loss. It also serves to honor the deceased's life, achievements, and the impact they had on those around them. Additionally, an obituary provides important information about the services that will be held.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by a close family member or friend of the deceased. Sometimes, the task may be undertaken by a funeral director or an employee at the newspaper’s obituary department following guidelines or information provided by the family.

Where is an obituary published?

An obituary can be published in local or national newspapers, online memorial sites, social media, community bulletins, and sometimes in trade or professional publications depending on the deceased's involvement in particular organizations or industries.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, to-the-point announcement of death that may not include biographical details or personal anecdotes. It's typically a paid, classified advertisement arranged by the family. An obituary, conversely, is a more detailed account of the person's life and death and, in some publications, may be written by editorial staff.

How do I begin writing an obituary?

To begin writing an obituary, start by gathering pertinent facts about the deceased, such as full name, age, date of birth, date of death, and location. You may then proceed to writing about their life, accomplishments, surviving family members, and details about the funeral or memorial services.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary often includes the deceased's full name, age, city of residence, names of surviving relatives, biographical sketch, significant life achievements, information on funeral services, and sometimes a cause of death if the family wishes to share it.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary. This decision is personal and up to the discretion of the family. Some families choose to include it to provide clarity or raise awareness about a particular health issue, while others prefer to keep it private.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. This helps readers to recognize the individual and can serve as a meaningful visual tribute. The specific guidelines for photographs vary by publication.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, typically ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs. In print publications, space constraints and cost may limit length. Online platforms often allow for longer, more detailed obituaries.

What tone should an obituary have?

An obituary should have a respectful and commemorative tone, often highlighting the positive aspects of the deceased's life and their contributions to the world. It should also provide a factual account of their passing and related service information.

How can I personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, consider including anecdotes, personal stories, and attributes that capture the essence of the deceased's personality. Quotes from the deceased or sayings they were known for can also add a personal touch.

Is it okay to include humor in an obituary?

Yes, if it aligns with the personality of the deceased and is done tastefully, humor can be a fitting way to reflect the life of someone who was known for their wit or joyfulness. It’s important to balance humor with the respectful nature of the announcement.

Should an obituary be fact-checked?

It is essential to fact-check an obituary before publication to ensure all names, dates, and information are accurate. Errors can be distressing to family and friends and might detract from the obituary's tribute to the deceased.

Can I include charitable donation requests in an obituary?

Many families opt to include requests for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's memory, especially if the charity is one they were passionate about. Be sure to include the name and address or website of the charity.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary in the newspaper?

If the cost of a newspaper obituary is prohibitive, consider alternative options like publishing it online, on social media, or through a community organization. Some websites offer free or low-cost options for obituary publication.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published as soon as practical after death, often within a few days. This allows time to inform the community and provide details about upcoming services.

Are there different cultural practices regarding obituaries?

Cultural practices can significantly influence how obituaries are written and published. Some cultures may include more biographical information, while others may focus on family connections. It’s important to be aware of and respectful toward the customs of the deceased and their family.

Is it possible to update an obituary after it has been published?

In many cases, especially online, obituaries can be updated after initial publication. However, in print, once it is published, it cannot be changed and reprinting may incur additional costs.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that the information included is accurate and reflects their wishes, although it is still advisable to have a loved one review it.

How can an obituary be a celebration of life?

An obituary can celebrate a life by focusing on the person’s love, joy, and the legacy they leave behind, rather than just the fact of their death. Sharing stories of their passions, achievements, and the love they shared with others can be a powerful way to honor their memory.
