Bruce Nussman - November 24, 1935 - October 29, 2017

Departed: 10/29/2017 (Jacksonville)
Obituary Preview: Bruce Love Nussman, 81, passed away October 29, 2017 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Bruce was born on November 24, 1935 in Kannapolis, North Carolina. After high school, he proudly served in the US Army in one of the first Nike guided missile units in Texas and Michigan. Upon his return, he began working full-time in the trucking industry for White Motor Heavy Duty Trucks and enrolled in night classes at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte earning an Associate Degree in Business. It was in one of his classes that he met and fell in love with Peggy Jean Carriker. They married in 1963, moved to Jacksonville, Florida and raised three daughters.
He finished his career with Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corporation and was proud to have owned one of the first cell phones ever made. The installation of it in his car consumed the majority of his trunk space. He paid for the incredibly expensive mobile phone and high-priced service out of his own pocket and recouped the annual cost in less than a month because of his constant availability as a salesman. This move was a huge innovation for his time.
Bruce spent much of his spare time boating on the St. Johns River. He had a boat for every occasion. The Donzi speed boat was for watersports. The Chris Craft was for leisure cruising. The Fish Nautique was for fishing. The 38-foot high-performance, offshore racing boat was for speed. Obviously. He was even passionate about collecting nautical antiques.
Bruce loved restoring antique and classic cars. He started with the restoration of a 1929 Chevrolet Coupe while attending college, and over time, owned many classic cars. Bruce still owns his fully restored 1941 Lincoln Continental Mark I and 1951 Jaguar XK 120 roadster. His family still misses the 1966 Lincoln Continental with suicide doors that he sold many years ago but have decided to move on. He continued to show his meticulous, award-winning cars in regional car shows and attended local cruise-ins.
Bruce always wore shorts and boat shoes, had a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other, while somehow consuming salted peanuts. He would always share a big, warm smile with everyone he met. His family will miss that smile more than they miss that ’66 Lincoln.
At 81, it is no wonder he is predeceased by his parents Love Nussman and Eva Geneva Pickler Nussman. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy Carriker Nussman; brother, John Nussman; his three children Cynthia (Lee) Brannon, Tara Westerhold (Greg Feld) and Elizabeth Ashley (Ronnie Jr.) Bryant. Bruce has six grandchildren: Lee Jr. and Travis Brannon; Emily Westerhold; and Nichole, Josie, and Sadie Bryant. He also has four great grandchildren.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers (both in print and online), on funeral home websites, and on dedicated obituary and memorial websites. Sometimes, they may also be shared through social media.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, or funeral directors. Occasionally, for notable figures, a newspaper staff writer or reporter may write an obituary.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely, depending on the publication, the length of the obituary, and the region. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while online platforms might have a set fee or offer free postings.

Can I publish an obituary for free?

Yes, there are some websites and platforms that allow you to publish an obituary for free, but these may have limitations on length or content. It's always best to research specific outlets to understand their policies.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a short biography, a list of close surviving relatives, details about the funeral or memorial service, and any preferred charities for memorial contributions. Some also include a cause of death.

Is it necessary to have an obituary?

While not legally necessary, an obituary serves as a formal announcement of death and can help to inform the community and distant friends or relatives. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of the deceased.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days of a death, ideally before the funeral or memorial service to allow others to pay their respects and make arrangements to attend.

Can an obituary be too long?

While there's no strict limit to the length of an obituary, longer ones can be costly if publishing in print. It's important to convey the significant details without losing the readers' attention. Online platforms may offer more flexibility.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is generally a more detailed account of a person's life and often includes a biography and family details. A death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement of death and the details of the funeral or memorial services without the biographical information.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

Newspapers and some online platforms may fact-check details like dates and survivor names. However, ensuring the accuracy of the obituary ultimately lies with the person writing and submitting it.

Should I include a photograph with an obituary?

While optional, including a photograph helps personalize the obituary and makes it easier for people to recognize the deceased, especially if they were known by a large community or had not been seen recently.

How can obituaries be helpful for genealogical research?

Obituaries can provide valuable information for genealogists, including details about family connections, biographical snippets, places of residence, and sometimes even the ancestral town or country of origin.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary?

If the deceased expressed a desire not to have an obituary published, it's important to respect their wishes. You can still notify friends and relatives personally or through private means.

Are there cultural considerations to keep in mind when writing an obituary?

Yes, cultural considerations are important. Different cultures may have varying traditions around death announcements, and it's crucial to be respectful and adhere to these customs when writing and publishing an obituary.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after publication?

To submit an obituary to a local newspaper, visit the paper's website or contact their obituaries department for submission guidelines, including formats, lengths, costs, and deadlines.

What is the etiquette for responding to condolences received after publishing an obituary?

Etiquette suggests acknowledging condolences with a thank you note whenever possible. In cases of a large volume of responses, a general thank you message published online or via social media could suffice.

Can I include charitable donations requests in the obituary?
