Judith Deon Sanders Wood - July 31, 1941 - March 28, 2022

Departed: 03/28/2022 (Torrance)
Obituary Preview: Judith Deon Sanders Wood passed away on March 28, 2022 after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer a week earlier. She was 80 years old.
Although she was born to Robert and Evelyn Griffith Sanders in Long Beach, CA on July 31, 1941, she was raised by her paternal grandmother Ruth Ellen Combs and her companion, William Oliver Coleman, whom Judy lovingly called “Ba” after her mother died when she was just three years old and her father was stationed in the Philippines during WWII. She married Paul B Wood in October 1959 and spent most of her life as a resident of Torrance, CA before relocating to Gilbert, AZ in 2003. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Judy was grounded in her belief that she was a daughter of a Heavenly Father who loved her and that Jesus Christ was her Savior and constant companion. She gained a strong testimony of this truth as a young mother, and it guided her life. She believed that families are eternal as she and Paul were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple in September 2001. She looked forward to being reunited with her parents, her husband and daughter Donna Wood, all of whom predeceased her. Judy was active in many programs with her membership in the Church, including Primary, Relief Society, and as a Stake ‘Campcrafter’ leader in the Young Women’s organization. She led a group of young women on a weeklong trip where they canoed down the Colorado River in 1983. She knew how to plan a party and feed a crowd and those talents were utilized as she organized social events and activities for the Gardena II Ward in Torrance, CA for many years. After her move to Gilbert, she organized the Empty Nesters group, planned many dinners for the East Valley Men’s Shelter and was the Ward Librarian for many years. She also served as a cafeteria worker in the Mesa, AZ Temple and as an Office Worker in the Gilbert, AZ Temple. With a zest for learning, Judy enrolled in a beginning quilting class at the local adult school in 1977, which ultimately led her to open Quilts Unlimited, the local quilt shop which quickly became a quilter’s destination in the South Bay area. She had a gift for teaching and shared her expertise and love of fabrics, color, and design with all who wanted to learn. She was a marketing genius and the store tripled in size during its 20-year run. She founded the Southern California Association of Quilt Shop Owners, the Southern California Shop Hop and was integral in the creation and growth of the popular Road to California Quilter’s Conference. In 1992 Judy addressed an international quilter’s organization in Frankfurt, Germany. When she moved to Gilbert, AZ she organized the San Tan Quilters Group that is still going strong today. In addition to her quilt shop, Judy had a wedding planning business, Simple Elegance by Deon for several years. Judy was passionate about serving her community and spent many years as a Girl Scout leader, inspiring nearly 100 girls to become confident, courageous and strong young women as they earned badges and camped in primitive locations. Of those she led, 12 girls earned their First Class Award, which, at the time, was the highest award in Girl Scouting. In addition, she served in several officer positions with the local elementary school PTA. After her husband Paul’s death in March 2002, Judy reconnected with her childhood sweetheart Jim Myers. They had been an important part of each other’s lives through their tumultuous teens and after a 44-year separation they were able to rekindle a love they once knew and married in February 2004. Jim moved to Gilbert, AZ to be with Judy, but also spent time in northern CA to keep up with business dealings. Judy’s grandchildren loved to ride on the back of Jim’s motorcycle and play with him when they visited. Jim died in October 2019. Judy was all about her family and adored her five children, 13 grandchildren, her in-laws, and nieces and nephews. She was a loyal friend to many and was often the first to respond to a need or crisis. Her vibrant red hair matched her fiery temper. She loved the warmth of the desert sun and took every opportunity to be in Palm Springs, Indio, or on a boat on the Colorado River. She was an expert cook, but pie crusts were her specialty which she filled expertly. Her children continue to make her legendary tacos and “mom’s rolls” are still being made every holiday or special event.
In October 2011 Judy decided she needed a dog and rescued her beloved five-year-old Sadie from a local shelter. Sadie brought her much joy and happiness and has been her constant companion for the past 10.5 years. Sadie watched over and comforted Judy in her last days and mourns her loss as much as the rest of us. Judy is survived by her daughters Paula Malmfeldt, Darla Briggs, and Theresa Cox, her sons Ronald Wood and Kenneth Wood, her 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Her family grieves her loss, but they take comfort in knowing that Judy is enjoying her long-awaited reunion with her husband Paul, and her daughter Donna.

George Chapman - January 26, 1943 - January 04, 2021

Departed: 01/04/2021 (Torrance)
Obituary Preview: Obituary - George Chapman January, 1943 – January, 2021  (77))
It is with heavy hearts that we share that our beloved brother George C Chapman peacefully passed away on January 4, 2021 following a four-year valiant effort dealing with challenging health issues. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, George was the oldest of our family of 11 children born to George and Clara Chapman.  He was nine years old when the family moved to Southern California. If you knew George, you knew a jubilant man with love of family and friends, strong in faith and quietly “doing for others”.  And what a joyous, caring and brilliant big brother he was. His zest for living encompassed a broad universe of interests, hobbies and skills.  George enjoyed many adventurous activities including river rafting the Deschutes River, snow skiing, recreational volleyball and disc golf.  He was adventurous indeed! When we were younger, our family loved that George’s intellectual curiosity enriched our household. In the early days of television, George rescued an abandoned TV and analyzed the problem. He replaced the tv-tubes and we had our first television set!  More – a CB ham radio!  A telescope!  On those clear Santa Ana windy nights he would show us the planets, and we could see Saturn‘s rings. Dinner table conversations were diverse and often challenging to comprehend! His love of Disneyland was legendary. He once got permission from our mom and the school principal to pull his younger siblings out of school for the day. He surprised us and took us to the Magic Kingdom!
George was a fun-loving uncle who absolutely loved the many fun times spent with his 23 nieces and nephews and 37 grand nieces and nephews.   We were inspired by and love to share that George was an early pioneer in his career as a computer programming engineer.  His math and science skills were greatly used in his computer programming for Hyland Labs, and Electronic Data Systems.
He was also a dedicated parishioner at St. Columban Roman Catholic Church in Garden Grove, CA.  He served the parish as a Knight of Columbus and as the Grand Knight for several years.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara Chapman; his sister, Patricia (Chapman) de la Torre; his niece, Gina Runyan; and his nephew, Olin Johnson.  May they all rest in peace. The leader of our pack is gone.  In honor of George Chapman, we hope you embrace your family, faith, friends, and pursue your curiosity!

Marianne Lawson - April 11, 1925 - January 04, 2018

Departed: 01/04/2018 (Torrance)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory Marianne (Marion V. Loris) Lawson 1925 - 2018
Marianne Loris Lawson of Burbank, California, born April 11, (born Marion) and raised in Ashland, Ohio, next to the youngest of five sisters and a brother, by Paul and Effa Loris. Passed away at 92 on January 4th of age-related causes.
Graduated high school 1943, she soon moved to Los Angeles to join two sisters, where she began studying theater at LACC and the L.A. Actors' Studio. She briefly moved to New York City to pursue acting and further training. At both, she received coaching from renowned acting teachers Lee Strasburg, Stella Adler, and Elia Kazan, all original proponents and adapters of Stanislavski, or “Method” acting. Fellow students included Lloyd Bridges and John Cassavetes. She did some stage work, including a short-lived Broadway play called “All You Need is One Good Break,” that included J. Edward Bromberg and debuted Lee Grant.
She crossed paths with many actors, writers, and directors who would go on to fame. Read for parts with James Dean, famed writers Lillian Hellman and Clifford Odetts (became a pal), and competed with Cloris Leachman and Julie Harris. She was inspiration for character “Marianne Lorress” in 1950 film Lady Without a Passport played by Hedy Lamarr (with whom, along with Jane Russell, she was often compared). She dated Charlie Chaplin Jr., becoming a regular guest at the home of his legendary father, Charlie Chaplin, Sr., where she socialized with Greta Garbo, Shirley Temple, Kirk Douglas, among many actors. She would “babysit” Geraldine Chaplin.
Returning to California she reconnected with her soon-to-be husband, big band saxophonist Robert Lawson, of the Jimmy Dorsey Band. They had previously met when she attended big band concerts at the Hollywood Palladium in mid-1940s, which featured Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Frank Sinatra. They had three children together, Heidi, Jodi, and James. Their marriage lasted until the early ‘60’s.
In 1961, she began working as a secretary for Marlon Brando, Sr. at Pennebaker Productions, begun by his son, acting legend Marlon Brando, Jr. While also working for company film producer Walter Seltzer (Soylent Green), he introduced her to his brother Julian Seltzer, Director of Advertising, 20th Century Fox, to whom she was later married until his death. The Seltzer brothers were close friends with Charlton Heston, Victor Mature, and Diana Douglas (Michael’s mother and formerly married to Kirk) with whom they all spent much private family time over the years.
Later, she became secretary to top senior executives at MCA/Universal. She then worked for Charles “Bud” Dant, award-winning composer and producer at Decca Records, when he guided the recording of The Irish Rovers, “The Unicorn Song,” recordings of Earl Grant, and U.S. issue of The Who's ground-breaking rock opera “Tommy.” Her knowledge of music industry led to a position at the Musician’s Union in Hollywood. Her career culminated as Office Manager/Secretary for Kings County Development Corporation in North Hollywood, a long time private land/mineral holdings trust in California with roots to the early railroad and other prominent industrial families. Among her favorite things were: Shirley Temple, skater Sonja Henie, Judy Garland, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy; history, especially the Titanic, John Muir, Albert Einstein, the space program, and Sequoia National Park, where she loved to walk through the “big trees.”
She got to experience a lot of history, including a parade in the ‘40’s through downtown L.A. that featured war hero General George S. Patton (riding on a tank), and a ‘50’s motorcade through Burbank by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. She won a beauty contest in Hollywood as well. She also attended the Indianapolis 500 in 1954 and attended several Academy Awards. Her music connections allowed her to take her family to two Beatles concerts, one at the Hollywood Bowl and another at Dodger Stadium in the ‘60’s.
She retired and continued living at her home of 55 years in Burbank. She passed away peacefully at Providence St. Joseph Hospital. She is survived by her three children, Heidi Lawson Brennan (Arlington, VA), Jodi H. Lawson (Burbank), and James C. Lawson (Redondo Beach), six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and twelve nephews and nieces. In lieu of a funeral, her family will reunite to celebrate her life this spring. Donations may be made in her memory to Providence Saint Joseph Foundation, Burbank, CA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, often published in a newspaper or online, that announces someone's death and provides a summary of their life, including achievements, family connections, and sometimes details about the funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to inform the community and honor the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries prior to their passing as part of their end-of-life planning.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is typically a more detailed account of a person's life, including biographical details and personal stories, while a death notice is a shorter, more factual announcement of the person’s passing, often including just the name, age, and information about the funeral services.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, online memorial sites, or on the websites of funeral homes. They can also appear in national newspapers or trade publications, depending on the deceased's notability or professional connections.

How soon after death is an obituary published?

The timing can vary widely but is generally within a few days of the death. This allows for friends and extended family to be notified in time to attend funeral services. Some obituaries may be published later, especially if they are more detailed or are part of a memorial tribute.

Can an obituary include personal anecdotes?

Yes, personal anecdotes can add a unique and heartfelt touch to an obituary. They help celebrate the individual's character and share their story in a way that factual information alone cannot capture.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, a brief overview of their life, accomplishments, affiliations, family members, and information about any funeral or memorial services. Inclusions may vary based on the family's preferences and the obituary's length.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

It is not required to include the cause of death in an obituary, and the decision is a personal one for the family. Some families choose to include it for closure or awareness, while others prefer to keep it private.

How can I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, double-check all factual information with reliable family sources or official documents. It's also a good practice to have other family members or close friends proofread the obituary before publication.

Can obituaries be updated once published online?

Online obituaries often provide the flexibility to be updated by the family or the platform managing the notice, especially if there are errors or omissions. However, print obituaries cannot be altered once the publication goes to print.

Are there any common formats or templates for writing obituaries?

Yes, there are common formats that many people choose to follow when writing an obituary, usually starting with an announcement of passing, biographical sketch, family list, service details, and a closing message. Templates are available online or can be provided by the funeral home.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

There's no strict rule concerning the length; it should be long enough to convey all relevant information and personal touches without overwhelming the reader. Typically, they can range from a few short paragraphs to a full column.

Is it okay to use humor in an obituary?

When used respectfully and appropriately, humor can reflect the personality of the deceased and bring some light into a time of mourning. However, it is crucial to consider the tone and ensure it aligns with the feelings of the family and friends.

How specific should dates and locations be in an obituary?

While specific dates and locations lend credibility and detail to an obituary, evaluate the implications of sharing detailed dates (like exact birthdates) due to potential identity theft concerns. It's often safe to provide the year and place without being overly specific.

What should I do if there's a mistake in an obituary?

If an obituary error is discovered, contact the publication or website to request a correction. Timing is essential, especially if it pertains to service information so that corrections can be made before the services occur.

How can I add a personal touch to an obituary?

Personal touches can include mentioning the deceased’s favorite sayings, special interests, notable quirks, key life philosophies, or important milestones. These elements help paint a more complete picture of the individual.

Should I share the obituary on social media?

Sharing an obituary on social media can quickly inform friends and acquaintances of the passing. However, it's essential to ensure that immediate family members have been notified privately before the broader social media announcement.

Can friends contribute to writing an obituary?

Friends can certainly contribute anecdotes, factual information, or help in drafting the obituary. It's a collaborative effort that can result in a more comprehensive tribute to the deceased's life.

Is it possible to write a pre-emptive obituary?

Yes, some individuals choose to write their own obituaries ahead of time as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that their life story is told as they wish and relieves some of the burden from family members during a time of grief.

How can people make contributions in memory of the deceased?

Family members often indicate a preferred charity or fund for memorial contributions within the obituary. Instructions for donating can be included, providing an outlet for people to honor the deceased's memory in a meaningful way.

What do I do if I missed the funeral but want to express condolences?

If you missed the funeral, you could still express condolences to the family through a sympathy card, phone call, or by signing any online guestbooks associated with the obituary. It's also considerate to mention an anecdote or memory of the deceased to share your personal connection and support.
