ROSA GARCIA - February 06, 1947 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Opa-Locka)
Obituary Preview: Rosa Garcia, beloved mother, grandmother, companion and friend, passed away on April 2, 2024 at the age of 77. She passed away at her home in Miami, Florida with her family by her side. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Rosa had touched in some way throughout her life. The day of her passing, all her children and grandchildren were with her by her side. She knew her whole family surrounded her, which was her life.
She was born in Havana, Cuba and came to the United States as a teenager. She dedicated her life to being a homemaker. She is survived by six children, Mark and his Wife Carol, Tony, Peter and his wife Erika, Lizzette, Rosy and her husband Claudio and Jessica; 19 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way; her companion Jorge; and let’s not forget her fish. She was preceded in death by her son Junior.
Rosa loved animals. During her life, she had countless dogs, birds, monkeys, ferrets, hamsters, turtles and fish. She loved being out in the street, eating and shopping. Her love language was gifts so she loved buying things for her family. She loved all things fast food. She would prefer anything to drink but water saying it tasted bad.
Most of all she loved her family. She made sure that family would always get together. She always said that blood is thicker than water. She would call her children daily and just wanted to know what was going on in their life; even what they were doing or eating for the next meal. She loved being on her phone and talking to friends too. She had her Facebook and posted often. She loved giving greeting cards with her signature mark. She would put on lipstick, sign her name and then kiss the card on top of her name so the one receiving it would always have her kiss and know how much she loved them.
A prayer burial will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery followed by a reception in her home where friends and family can gather, eat, and have great conversations just as she loved.
Rosa’s voice, love and kisses will always be felt. We know that she loved Jesus and that she is in Heaven for eternity with her son and those that went before her. No more suffering and no more pain. Rosa will be forever missed but always in our hearts. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away”. Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said [a]to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” Revelations 21:4-5

HECTOR LUIS SANTOS - July 31, 1961 - January 12, 2024

Departed: 01/12/2024 (Opa-Locka)
Obituary Preview: Hector Santos, age 62, of Pompano Beach Florida after a long struggle with cancer passed away on January 12th at approximately 9:30 am at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Miami Beach FL. Hector was born in New York City on July 31, 1961 to Maria Isabel and Domingo Santos. He is survived by his siblings Domingo, David, and Orlando with whom he enjoyed his early years. He is also survived by nieces and nephews who include Christabelle, Raymond Raisabell, David Jr. and James.    At the age of 17, Hector left Puerto Rico for New York City where he emancipated and began living his life. First and foremost, Hector lived his life his way! In 1992, (At age 31) he moved to Phoenix joining his brothers Domingo, and later Orlando. While in phoenix he not only did he develop entrepreneurial skills, but also enjoyed cooking Puerto Rican, Mexican, and other cuisines, making memories with his brothers, and enriching the lives of family and friends alike. Around 1999-2001, (Roughly age 39) he decided to relocate to Florida so that he would be closer to his Mom and Dad who lived in Puerto Rico. Not long after, our mom was diagnosed with cancer. His good will and caring attitude allowed him to spring into action coordinating medical care, housing, and tireless support as she battled this horrible disease which ultimately took her life as well.    To lighten things up, I would like to share and invite you to share some amusing memories about Hector. One of my favorites is the effort that he put into leaving home (As we all did). In his effort to make money, he must have raffled a macramé plant holder about 5 times! (The same one!!! because no one won the raffle!) He must have been destined to leave at that period because it generated the income that he needed for a plane ticket to NYC. (This is the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey) Hector was truly loved by many friends who speak very highly of him. To this day I still believe that there were two Hectors! But come to find out, there was another side of Hector that we were not aware of which deepened our understanding of his kind and gentle heart. Which was demonstrated by those of you who spoke. What I am profoundly proud and grateful for is that Hector developed extremely loyal friends and relationships. Honestly, we were not aware of how deeply he touched and was touched by others. Not only did he impact the life of family and friends, he also contributed to his community by providing guidance and advice to those requiring social services, volunteering, and delivering food to the needy through special programs. These actions not only summarize but epitomize his life’s accomplishments. I will close with the following statement conveyed by a friend: "There's not a tear that You waste, You take it and You turn it into something better." Health has been restored to Hector and he has started on a new journey. He will never be far away because he loves you and love never ends.

VICTOR MANUEL BERDECIA CRUZ - June 10, 1977 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (Opa-Locka)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Victor Manuel Berdecia Cruz
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Victor Manuel Berdecia Cruz, a devoted son, cherished brother, godfather, and a source of immeasurable joy to all who knew him. Victor passed away on Dec. 26, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and warmth that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate to be part of his life.
Born on June 10, 1977, Victor was the beloved son of Ana Cruz. From the beginning, it was evident that Victor shared an extraordinary bond with his mother, Ana, who was his world. Their connection was a testament to the deep, unconditional love that can exist between a mother and her son.
Victor was humble and genuine, exhibiting contentment with what he possessed, eliminating any desire for more. He put his faith in God, knowing that God would see him through. He was a loyal and hard worker, and he never missed a day of work. He has left an imprint on our hearts and will forever be remembered as a loving, charismatic, and optimistic loved one.
Victor lived most of his life in Miami Beach, and you could usually find him playing basketball at Flamingo Park. He loved basketball, hip-hop, and history. Victor enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion with others. He admired Bruce Lee and would show everyone his one-inch punch video. Randomly, he would begin to sway his shoulders to a 2Pac beat while reciting verses with passion. Whether he knew you or passed you on the street, his smile was infectious, and you could not help but smile back.
As we mourn the loss of Victor, let us also celebrate the life of this extraordinary person who taught us the value of hard work, the beauty of humility, and the importance of making a lasting impact on the lives of others. May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory continue to shine brightly in our hearts.

She did tell me that she did help people that she knew jobs at the hospital.  She helped get our Ines Arias and Lorena Quesada get jobs at the hospital and at the Ministry of Transportation.

JEFFREY IGNATIUS RIGGS - November 01, 1965 - May 31, 2023

Departed: 05/31/2023 (Opa-Locka)
Obituary Preview: Jeffrey Riggs November 1, 1965 - May 31, 2023
Born in Key West, FL to Robert Franklin Riggs a veteran of the United States Navy and Mariblanca Alvarez Riggs originally from Guantanamo, Cuba, citizen of the United States and a resident of Miami, Fl.
Born with an extraordinary mind, an ordinary life was not for you and so you chased the dream of something greater and imagined yourself a captain of air and sea.
Yes, you were rash and impulsive and there were many deep chasms that you wandered into.  With drugs and alcohol, you sought to escape the ordinary and mundane and instead found loneliness, isolation and anger.  You suffered greatly and brought great suffering to those who loved you.
Yet, sprinkled in were glorious sunrises and peaceful sunsets, music and dancing, laughter and celebrations, the promise of love and the companionship of fellow wanderers, dreamers and lost souls.
Now it seems God has decided your chase is ended and you no longer need to search for love.  You now fly the heavenly seas guided by the sister who went before you to be together always with your mother and father, to be at peace and suffer no more.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often accompanied by a brief summary of their life, information about the funeral or memorial service, and details about the family they leave behind. It is typically published in newspapers and online platforms as a way to inform the community and recognize the deceased's life and passing.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends of the deceased. Sometimes, if the deceased is a prominent public figure or if the family requests, a professional writer or journalist may write the obituary. Funeral homes may also offer obituary writing services.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in print newspapers, on newspaper websites, and on dedicated online obituary platforms. They can also appear in trade publications, church bulletins, and community newsletters, depending on the reach the family wishes to achieve.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, date of birth and death, a brief recounting of their life story, achievements, surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and sometimes a photo. It may also include information about where to send flowers or donations in their memory.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

This can vary widely, but obituaries are generally published within a few days to a week after the person's death, allowing time for the family to gather necessary information and prepare the obituary while also providing timely information about funeral arrangements.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is typically a shorter, more straightforward announcement of someone's passing with basic details and funeral information. An obituary is more detailed and personalized, often including a biography and personal tributes.

Can anyone submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Generally, newspapers and websites have guidelines on who can submit obituaries. Most often, submissions are accepted from funeral homes or directly from immediate family members to ensure the authenticity of the information provided.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

No, there is no standard length for an obituary. It may vary depending on the publication's space constraints, the life history of the deceased, and the family's preferences. However, most obituaries are brief, typically ranging from a few hundred words to around a thousand.

How can I write a meaningful obituary?

To write a meaningful obituary, focus on capturing the essence of the person's life, including significant achievements, personal interests, and impactful relationships. Be genuine and respectful, and consider what the deceased would have wanted to be highlighted. When possible, share anecdotes that illuminate their personality and spirit.

What are some common mistakes to avoid in writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include focusing too heavily on the deceased's death rather than their life, including too much personal information that may lead to identity theft, and not proofreading for errors. It's also important to be conscious of the tone and to ensure the final piece respects the sensibilities of all readers.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

While obituaries are not typically subject to the same rigorous fact-checking as other news articles, it is customary for the funeral home or newspaper staff to review them for potential errors or sensitivity issues. Accuracy is the responsibility of the family or the person submitting the obituary.

Can an obituary be edited after publication?

Once an obituary is printed in a newspaper, it cannot be edited. However, online obituaries often have some flexibility for editing. It's important to check with the specific publication or website about their policy on updates or corrections.

What if I want to include a picture in the obituary?

Many publications allow for the inclusion of a photograph with the obituary. It's best to select a high-quality portrait that best represents the deceased. Be sure to check the guidelines of the publication for size and format requirements.

How do I handle the obituary if the deceased did not have a traditional funeral?

If there is no traditional funeral, the obituary can mention any alternative memorial service or gathering planned, or simply state that a private service will take place. The obituary should align with the family's wishes and honor the deceased's life in a way that is fitting, regardless of the type of service held.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and length of the obituary. Some newspapers charge by the word, inch, or column length. Online platforms may have a fixed fee. It's recommended to inquire with each publication for their specific pricing structure.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely up to the family's discretion. Some families choose to include it, especially if the deceased was a public figure or if the death resulted from a widespread issue, such as a disease that they were publicly battling.

Should I include charitable donation information?

If the deceased or the family wishes to have donations made to a charity in lieu of flowers, this can be included in the obituary. Provide the name and contact information or website of the charity to ensure that readers know how to contribute.

Can family disputes affect the content of an obituary?

Family disputes can complicate the writing of an obituary. It is essential to approach the obituary with sensitivity and strive for a consensus among key family members, if possible, to ensure the obituary appropriately honors the deceased and does not exacerbate conflicts.

What about including a poem or quote in the obituary?

Including a favorite poem, song lyric, or quote of the deceased can be a meaningful addition to an obituary. It should reflect the beliefs, values, or personality of the person who has passed. Just be sure it fits within the publication's space limitations and that the wording is appropriate and respectful.

How do I respect the deceased's wishes if they did not want an obituary?

If the deceased specifically requested no obituary, it's important to respect their wishes. Instead, the family may choose to communicate the passing and service details privately to friends and loved ones through personal communication or social media, according to the preferences expressed by the deceased.

Are obituaries legally required?

No, obituaries are not legally required. They are customarily published as a way to inform the community and honor the life of the deceased, but there is no legal obligation to publish one.
