Sally J. Pennekamp - August 17, 1933 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Edgerton)
Obituary Preview: Sally Joyce (Merkel) Pennekamp, 90, of Edgerton, Wis., joined her husband Ralph Pennekamp on the long hike on April 11, 2024, after a brief stay at the Edgerton Care Center. We who remain earthbound can only imagine what a glorious journey it will be.
Sally was born in Milwaukee on Aug. 17, 1933, the first-born of Ted and Ethel (Gloudemans) Merkel.
The Merkel’s moved to Reedsburg, Wis. in 1936. Sally graduated from Reedsburg High School in 1951. She was a member of the high school band, playing cornet. Sally also played the violin with the Reedsburg High School Orchestra.
Sally continued her studies at St. Theresa College in Winona, Minn. for one year before transferring to the University of Wisconsin at Platteville. She graduated from UW-Platteville in 1955 with a degree in Elementary Education. Sally taught a combined class of third and fourth graders in Belmont, Wis., and then taught third graders for several years in Madison.
Sally met Ralph Pennekamp while attending UW-Platteville. Sally married Ralph, whom she occasionally and affectionately referred to as “The Mister,” on Dec. 28, 1955, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg.
In 1964, the Pennekamp’s, now a family of five, bought a tavern which they renamed the Beacon, just north of Edgerton. In 1970, they purchased the Plaza Liquor Store and the family moved to Platteville. In 1975, when they heard the Beacon was for sale, Ralph and Sally bought the popular tavern again and moved back to the Edgerton area near Albion.
A few years later, Ralph and Sally began planning for building a new tavern. Land was purchased on the north edge of Edgerton; a blueprint was rendered, and the tavern was constructed. The Decoy opened its doors in 1983, with Sally being instrumental in all financial aspects. The couple owned and operated The Decoy until 1996 when the popular meeting place was sold, and Ralph and Sally retired.
Throughout the years, Ralph and Sally attended numerous athletic events including those in which their sons and grandchildren participated.
Throughout much of her life, Sally loved working with horses. Sally got her first horse at the age of 10. At 14, she won a class in which all the other competitors were adults during a horse show near Reedsburg. Sally and Ralph raised numerous horses when they lived in Platteville and Albion and enjoyed riding together when time allowed. Various carriages and cutters restored by Ralph were also put to use on occasion.
Sally enjoyed several years in service to her community. She served as the Treasurer of Edgerton’s Tobacco Days as well as Treasurer of the Downtown Renewal Group. Sally was also the first woman appointed to the Edgerton Economic Development Group, serving as Secretary. The group worked to renovate the old depot into the Tobacco City Museum.
Upon retirement, Sally enjoyed morning coffee clutches with friends, as well as tempting her luck during casino and bingo nights. She also liked being involved with the Community Center as well as St. Joseph Catholic Church events.
Sally was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 68 years, Ralph.
Sally is survived by three sons: Ted W., Prairie du Chien, Bill J. (Christine), Milton, and Tom A. (Nancy), Edgerton; two grandchildren Derek (Dora) Carrier and Kyle (Caprice) Carrier; six great grandchildren Dominic, Dahlia, Della, Leo, Eli and Ari Carrier; step grandchildren: Luke and Noah Brenden, Joshua (Mallory) Orlopp and Tanya (Mark) Orlopp-Strickland; step great grandchildren: Cayden, Ethan, Jonathan, Harper and Marnie.
Sally is also survived by siblings Connie (Bruce) Sigler, Yampa, Colo., Gretchen (Leon) Giles, Evergreen, Colo., Barbara (John) Novey, Phoenix, Ariz., and Steve (Mary) Merkel-Hess, Iowa City, Iowa; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. Saint Joseph Circle, Edgerton, on at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2024, with Father David Wanish celebrating. Scott Lord Schieldt - August 09, 1957 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Edgerton)
Obituary Preview: Scott Lord Schieldt danced into Heaven on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. He is survived by his children, Sonny, Luci and Ruby, wife of almost 30 years, Corine, his dad and hero, Sheldon Schieldt, sisters, Jodi and Mary Jo Schieldt, brother & partner in crime, Dave Grubb. In-laws, Willis and Pauletta Fick, Connie Fick and Michael Shannon, Chris and Mick Lacke, Ben and Hanna Lacke, Melinda Lacke and Eli Boecker, Matt, Tammie, Leah and Lily Fick and many, many more friends and relatives. He is preceded in death by his mom, Janet Schieldt, favorite dog Chewy, least favorite cat, Alfred, and several friends and relatives that we hold dear.
Scotty was a fighter, a lover and hard worker. All of these traits kept him going strong and living his best life to the end. Scott was born in Edgerton, WI to Janet and Sheldon Schieldt. He grew up with his two sisters, Mary Jo and Jodi on the east side of Madison and was not shy in telling you that it was the best side of Madison. He was known as Scooter the competitor, sports fanatic and solid friend to many. He had many stories of his time at LaFolette High School as a graduate and football coach. Also, as a UW Madison grad he loved his Badgers. Since he was five years old he knew he would be a PE teacher and lived out his dream for 36 years at Lowell Elementary School. It didn’t hurt that Jan was right across the hall for many of those years. He also took over the family farm, selling his signature Schieldt Farm sweet corn as the best in the Midwest. He was the definition of hard work, putting in the time, not the talk and truly loved being a farmer. He got to learn from the best, he would say, and looked to Sheldon as his biggest hero. He married his best friend, Corine, in 1994 in Key West and had the best barn party when they returned. Their best accomplishments and driving force for life came with Sonny, Luci, and Ruby. Scott packed a lifetime of lessons and laughter in his short time as a dad. He coached their sports, and was their loudest supporter of wrestling, art and swimming. He taught them many life lessons on the farm, and they will always carry the value of hard work with them. He had many words of wisdom and I think he’d pull this one out for them now: Live like the rockstars you think you are! Keep on Dancin’, Scotty, we love you and will hold you in our hearts until we see you again.

Eddie served in the Marine Corp from October 16, 1951 through October 15, 1953 and served in active duty during the Korean War. He was a true patriot and was always proud of our flag and was a proud Marine. He was also very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He loved lefse, lutefisk and a good Norwegian joke. He was a lifelong milk hauler starting out with cans and drove bulk milk 6 days a week until he was 79 years old and his route was sold. He was the hardest worker anyone could know. He was also an avid classic country music fan listening every Sunday morning to 99.9’s classic country music program always calling in and making requests and then taping them on blank cassette tapes. He was one of a kind and the BEST Dad EVER and like the song says “They don’t make them like this anymore.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of someone’s death, typically published in newspapers and online platforms. It serves as a notice to the community and often provides a summary of the deceased’s life story, information about the funeral or memorial services, and an opportunity to pay tribute to the loved one.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are usually written by family members, close friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals may even write their own obituaries prior to their passing to ensure their life is commemorated as they wish.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of the deceased's life, including biographical details, family members, achievements, and information about the services. A death notice, on the other hand, is typically shorter, with a straightforward announcement of the death and basic details about the funeral services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, the date and place of death, a brief summary of their life, accomplishments and interests, surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any preferred charities for memorial donations.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

There is no legal requirement to publish an obituary. The decision is often based on personal preference, cultural practices, or religious beliefs. Some families opt to share the passing of their loved one more privately, while others wish to notify the broader community.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

This can vary widely but is typically within a few days to a week after the death. The timing often coincides with the arrangement of funeral services, allowing individuals to express condolences and make plans to attend services.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated online obituary platforms. Some may also appear in national newspapers, especially for prominent individuals.

Can an obituary be published in multiple locations?

Yes, obituaries can be and often are published in multiple locations to ensure the news reaches everyone who might want to know. This can include local newspapers in areas where the deceased lived and worked, as well as online platforms that may have a wider reach.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary significantly based on the length of the obituary, the publication medium, and regional pricing differences. It's generally more expensive to publish in print newspapers than online.

Is it necessary to include a photo in an obituary?

While it's not necessary, including a recent photograph of the deceased is common practice. It helps to personalize the obituary and may also aid people in recognizing the individual being memorialized.

Can an obituary include personal messages or quotes?

Yes, personal messages, quotes, poems, or excerpts from religious texts can be included in an obituary to reflect the beliefs, personality, or life philosophy of the deceased.

Who decides on the final content of an obituary?

Typically, the immediate family or executor of the deceased's estate will make final decisions about the content of the obituary. If the deceased pre-wrote their obituary, the family may choose to honor their wishes as closely as possible.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

While newspapers and online services may verify the death with a funeral home or family, obituaries are generally not held to the same rigorous fact-checking standards as news articles. The responsibility for factual accuracy largely lies with the family or the party submitting the obituary.

What happens if a mistake is found in an obituary after publication?

If an error is identified post-publication, many publications will allow for corrections to be made in subsequent issues or updates to online postings, sometimes for an additional fee.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?
