Ezra Ted Newman - Unknown - March 24, 2021

Departed: 03/24/2021 (Stowe Township)
Obituary Preview: We lost a brilliant mind and a gentle character on March 24, 2021. Ezra Ted Newman died in his home in Pittsburgh surrounded by family and friends. He was born to Fannie Slutzky and David Newman on October 17, 1929 in the Bronx NY. He grew up spending time at Arrowhead Lodge, the hotel his parents owned. Ted went on to study physics at New York University, and later received his PhD from Syracuse University.
Ted’s 65-year faculty career in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh began in 1956. He received the Einstein Award in 2011 for his scientific contributions and “...for his intellectual passion, generosity and honesty, which have inspired and represented a model for generations….” His curiosity and academic accomplishments were overshaded only by his devotion to his family. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Sally Newman, his son David Newman (Uma Bhatt), his daughter Dara Newman (Scott Samuels), his sister Lita Moses, and his grandchildren Tessa, Leah, Tilahun, and Ari José.
Ted was a cherished and generous mentor, colleague, friend, father, husband, and grandfather. He inspired countless students, researchers, and family alike. He was kind and gentle, but held a fiery sureness in his opinions and was not afraid to state his mind. He loved opera and was an intrepid adventurer. Though he did not believe in souls or spirits or an afterlife, the desert canyons, expansive tundra and the night sky will always embody him. His charisma, soft chuckle, and warmth will live on. Ted will be remembered for his fierce love of life, a strong belief in truth, and a passion for science, politics, adventure and music, seamlessly interwoven with a quiet dedication, humbleness and humor. There is an enormous hole left in our world that will never again be filled but we are so grateful that he was here. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Anthony M. Elizabeth was born and raised in the city of Bloomfield, PA. She boasted with pride when talking to others about the city- Bloomfield-the place where she grew up and knew everything about. Elizabeth had loving nicknames such as Sissy, Betty, Bets, Mrs. C, and MiMi.
In her early years, Elizabeth was a student and graduate of the St. Augustine All Girls Catholic School where she was dedicated to the teachings of the Catholic religion and education. She was a beauty pageant contest winner and belonged to her school’s girl basketball team.
After high school, she worked for Bell Telephone Company and shortly afterwards she met her soulmate “Christy” while dancing at the Linden Grove in Castle Shannon, PA. She knew right away they were meant to live their lives together. At the age of 18, she married her love at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bloomfield, PA. They traveled by train to Niagara Falls, Canada to celebrate their Honeymoon and also celebrated many wedding anniversaries there.
Elizabeth and Salvatore were blessed with four children and a house in Robinson Township. They had company of fantastic neighbors and loyal friends. In 1969, Salvatore and Elizabeth lost their eldest daughter, Christiane to cancer at the age of 16. The death of her young daughter did not stop her life from living. Elizabeth, with her strong faith in God, believed in moving forward for the benefit for her family and friends.
She was very active and involved with her children and husband during their daily lives. Elizabeth was a Girl Scout leader and secretary of Holy Trinity Church and School Auxiliary. She loved planning block picnics with her dearest neighbors. She also traveled with her husband when he would sell Encyclopedia Britannica door to door. Salvatore appreciated when she went with him. She kept him company while he worked and helped him find directions. She was very proud of her hardworking husband. Elizabeth enjoyed cooking delicious Sunday dinner meals for her entire family and loved to care for her grandchildren while her children worked their jobs. She was the most dedicated grandmother and took pride in being her grandchildren’s number one fan at all of their events. She spread a positive attitude to others many times in her life. Her beautiful smile and sincere personality set an example for her grandchildren. She always told her children and grandchildren, “Smile and the world will smile with you.”
Elizabeth survived emotionally and physically. She believed in never giving up. She did not dwell on the negatives. She promoted, “every day is a new day.” She always kept a positive outlook on life. She overcame many things in her lifetime. She was a survivor of Breast Cancer twice and proved to others that they could do the same as she did. She took the time to be compassionate and kind to even strangers. She enjoyed shopping and friendly conversations. Elizabeth was known for her fashionable style and was humbled by many compliments that she received. She enjoyed traveling with her family on many trips around the country and islands. Elizabeth lived her life to the fullest just her like her husband did. They were inseparable.
Suddenly, in 2018 Elizabeth’s strength showed more than ever. Both Elizabeth and Salvatore kept fighting hard. When the doctor relayed the news about Elizabeth’s major stroke and medical condition, they knew it was time to savor every moment together. Side by side, they promoted each other’s love and belief in God. While Elizabeth resided in rehabilitation care, she welcomed her family and visitors and responded especially to her husband Salvatore’s affection. For 20 months while in rehabilitation, Elizabeth overcame pneumonia, infections, and blood clots. Doctors and medical workers would comment how strong and determined she was to thrive. They commented about how she had a strong will to live.
Then on Sunday, April 4, 2020 Elizabeth was called to Heaven. Elizabeth believed in God’s will in her life and her death. She believed she was always in God’s hands. “When grief turns into a smile, you know that God has given you strength. God is full of love and will carry you through any loss. We are grateful for the loving prayers and emotional support we’ve received from you for both our mother and father. Your kindness and heartfelt messages fill us with courage and strength. Elizabeth and Salvatore would want you to smile with the memory of them and their love for you. ” -With all of our love The Elizabeth and Salvatore Castelluccio Family

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online, that provides a brief summary of their life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and may include a message of remembrance from the family.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a formal way to inform the community of an individual's passing. They allow friends, acquaintances, and extended family to be aware of the loss, offer condolences, and make arrangements to attend services. Obituaries also serve as a historical record of the deceased's life and accomplishments.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends, sometimes with the assistance of funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals may write their own obituary prior to their death as part of end-of-life planning.

What information is included in an obituary?

Typical obituaries include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life and achievements, information about their family, details of the funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donation requests in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly. It may be a short, straightforward notice of just a few sentences or a comprehensive account of the person's life spanning several paragraphs. Newspapers often charge by length or by line, so budget may influence the length as well.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers have specific guidelines for submitting obituaries. You can typically find these guidelines on their website or by contacting the newspaper directly. The process generally involves writing the obituary according to their specifications and providing it to them before their specified deadline.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more factual statement of a person's death, often including only the name, age, place of residence, and information about the funeral services. An obituary is more detailed and usually includes biographical information and a photo of the deceased.

Is an obituary legally required?

No, an obituary is not a legal requirement. It is a customary practice to notify the community and honor the deceased’s memory, but there is no legal mandate to publish one.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are published online, either on the websites of traditional newspapers or through dedicated memorial platforms and social media. Online obituaries allow for wider dissemination and often provide the ability for readers to leave condolences and memories.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

This is generally a matter of personal preference, but most obituaries are published within a week of the death to allow time for friends and relatives to make arrangements to attend services. Some may be published sooner, particularly if services are scheduled quickly.

Can I include a photo in an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers and online platforms encourage including a photo with an obituary. This often helps readers to recognize the deceased and can serve as a cherished visual memory for those who knew them.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost can vary widely depending on the publication and its pricing structure. Some newspapers charge by word count or by line, while others have flat rates. Online obituaries can range from free to several hundred dollars based on the platform and the length of time the obituary will be visible.

Can an obituary be edited after it is published?

This depends on where the obituary is published. Newspapers have strict print deadlines and usually cannot make changes once in print, but may allow corrections for future editions. Online obituaries are generally more flexible and can often be edited after publication.

What if I make a mistake in the obituary?

If a mistake is found before publication, contact the newspaper or website immediately to correct it. If it’s already been published, you can request a correction or retraction, though options may be limited with printed media. For online obituaries, making changes is usually straightforward.

How do I write a compelling obituary?

To write a compelling obituary, focus on the essence of the person’s life. Share significant milestones, their passions, notable qualities, and the impact they left on others. Use anecdotes and specific examples to paint a picture of who they were. It’s important to balance factual content with personal touches.

Should I mention the cause of death in the obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and not a requirement. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others might share it, especially if they feel it could help others, as in the case of illnesses that have advocacy or awareness groups.

Can friends and extended family submit an obituary?

Yes, friends and extended family can submit an obituary, though it's best to coordinate with the immediate family to ensure that the information is accurate and that its publication is in line with their wishes.

Are there any restrictions on what can be included in an obituary?

Newspapers and online platforms often have guidelines for what can be included in obituaries. These might pertain to length, content such as the appropriateness of language, and the inclusion of certain personal information. It’s important to review and adhere to these guidelines.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

While not necessary, some may choose to hire a professional writer or a funeral director to craft an obituary, especially to ensure that it is written well and free from errors. Professional writers may also help in capturing the essence of the person’s life eloquently.

What should I do if I can't afford to publish an obituary?

If publishing an obituary is a financial concern, consider online alternatives, many of which are free or low-cost. Additionally, some community newspapers or church bulletins may publish obituaries at no charge or for a nominal fee.

Can an obituary be too long?

While there is no set limit to the length of an obituary, it is important to consider the reader's attention span and the potential cost associated with longer obituaries in print. An overly lengthy obituary may also dilute the impact of the most significant details of the person's life.
