Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of someone with a brief biography of their life. It typically includes the individual's name, age, date of death, family members, and any funeral or memorial services details. Its purpose is also to pay tribute to the person by highlighting their personal and professional achievements along with their impact on the community.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers, both in print and online, as well as on funeral home websites. There are also websites dedicated solely to publishing obituaries.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed remembrance that often includes biographical information, achievements, and personal stories, while a death notice is a shorter, more formal listing of the facts of death, survivorship, and funeral arrangements without an expansive biography or personal anecdotes.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by family members or friends, sometimes with the assistance of the funeral home; however, some newspapers also have staff writers who specialise in writing obituaries based on information provided by the family.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are typically published soon after the person's death, often within a few days to a week, to inform community members and announce services. Timing may vary based on publication deadlines and family considerations.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication or platform chosen. Newspapers often charge by word, line, or column inch, and fees can range from nominal to several hundred dollars. Many online platforms offer free or lower-cost options.

What are the key elements of an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life, family members, accomplishments, details about the funeral or memorial service, and information for memorial contributions or donations. Personal anecdotes may also be included to highlight the individual's character and impact on others.

Is a photograph necessary in an obituary?

A photograph is not necessary but is commonly included to provide a visual remembrance for friends and family. It can be a recent picture or one from earlier in life that best represents the person.

What should you not include in an obituary?

It is generally advisable to avoid including overly personal or sensitive information such as the cause of death, financial information, or anything that could be used for identity theft. Additionally, details that the deceased or family would prefer to keep private should not be included.

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

Once an obituary has been published in print, it cannot be updated. However, online obituaries may offer the opportunity for edits or updates if necessary.

Are obituaries a matter of public record?

Obituaries themselves are not public records; however, they are often based on information from death certificates, which are public records. As a publication in a newspaper or other media, obituaries are accessible to the public.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary when someone dies?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary when someone dies. It is a personal choice made by the family based on their wishes and traditions.

How do you submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

To submit an obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform to inquire about guidelines, submission deadlines, and fees. Many newspapers have forms to fill out either online or in print, and they can provide assistance if needed.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include misspelling names, incorrect dates, leaving out important family members, and not providing clear service information. Additionally, being too lengthy or excessively detailed can make the obituary less readable.

How can I ensure the obituary is a fitting tribute?

To ensure the obituary is a fitting tribute, include heartfelt details about the person's character, values, passions, and legacy. Engage other family members and friends in sharing memories and stories to create a rich, multifaceted portrait of the deceased’s life.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, many people opt to write their own obituaries as a way to reflect on their life and leave their legacy in their own words. This can also alleviate the burden on family members during a time of loss.

Are there templates available for writing obituaries?

Yes, many funeral homes, newspapers, and online resources offer templates and guidelines to help individuals write an obituary. These templates can assist with structure and content but should be personalized to reflect the unique life of the deceased.

How do you handle difficult facts when writing an obituary?

When handling difficult facts, such as a troubled past or cause of death, it's important to focus on the individual's life and the positive aspects of their character, rather than dwell on negative details. If necessary, difficult facts can be alluded to indirectly or omitted altogether, at the family’s discretion.

Is there a preferred length for an obituary?

While there is no strict length requirement for an obituary, it is advisable to keep it concise enough to maintain the reader’s interest while still including all significant information. On average, an obituary might range from a few hundred to over a thousand words, depending on the person's life complexity and the space limitations of the chosen publication.

What if I want to include charitable contributions in the obituary?

It is common to include a request for charitable contributions in lieu of flowers. If you choose to do so, provide the name and address or website of the charity, and ensure it aligns with the deceased's passions or causes they supported.

How do you acknowledge family members in an obituary?

In an obituary, family members are usually acknowledged in a list that includes spouses, children, grandchildren, immediate relatives, and sometimes close friends. It's important to ensure accuracy and include all key members of the family to honor their relationship to the deceased.

Can an obituary be written for someone who died some time ago?

Yes, obituaries can be written and published posthumously, regardless of how much time has passed since the individual's death. This can serve as a way to commemorate an anniversary of their passing or to share the person’s story with a new audience.
