Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of someone's death, usually published in newspapers or online platforms. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, details about the funeral or memorial service, and may include information about the person's family, career, achievements, and the cause of death if appropriate.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve several purposes; they inform the community of a person's passing, celebrate their life, and acknowledge their contributions. They also provide details on the services arranged for the deceased and facilitate a space for mourning and remembrance among friends, families, and sometimes the public at large.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. Sometimes a person might write their own obituary before they pass. In the case of prominent figures, a newspaper or other media outlet may have a staff writer prepare the obituary.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, place of residence, and the date of death. It also includes a summary of their life, achievements, surviving family members, details on the funeral or memorial service, and options for memorial contributions or flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary. Newspaper obituaries may be shorter due to space and cost constraints, typically ranging from a few lines to several paragraphs. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed, as there is more flexibility without the space limitations.

Are obituaries public records?

Obituaries published in newspapers or online are generally public records, accessible to anyone. However, they differ from official government death records, which are documented by local municipalities and subject to privacy laws.

How does one submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper or website, you will generally need to contact the publication's obituary department for submission guidelines and fees. Many publications offer forms and online submission options for convenience.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there's a difference. A death notice is a basic, paid announcement of a death, typically with minimal detail and without a biographical story, whereas an obituary is more comprehensive and often includes a life story, achievements, and personal anecdotes.

Can an obituary be edited after being published?

Once an obituary is published in a newspaper, it cannot usually be edited since it is part of a printed record. However, online obituaries may sometimes be updated or edited. It is important to thoroughly review an obituary before publication to avoid errors.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely based on the publication, the length of the obituary, and geographic location. Some newspapers charge by line or word, while others may offer a flat rate for a specified amount of space.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. There might be an additional cost for including photos in a newspaper obituary, but online memorials and obituaries often allow for multiple pictures at no extra charge.

Are obituaries necessary?

While not legally required, obituaries are an important tradition for many, serving as a final farewell and historical record. They also help to inform a wide audience about the details of the deceased's memorial services.

What if the deceased didn't want an obituary?

Respecting the wishes of the deceased is important. If they expressed not wanting an obituary, families can honor this by not publishing one or by opting for a private memorial. Communicating the person's death to friends and relatives can be done through personal channels.

How can I ensure an obituary is tasteful and respectful?

To ensure the obituary is tasteful and respectful, focus on the positive aspects of the person’s life, avoid controversial or overly personal details, and have family members or friends review it before publication.

Is it possible to include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include information about charitable donations in an obituary. Often families will request donations to a particular charity in lieu of flowers, especially if the cause was important to the deceased.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published as soon as the funeral arrangements have been made. This could be a few days after the death, although the timeline can be adjusted based on the family's needs and the publication schedules.

Should an obituary mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal decision. If it is included, it should be done so respectfully and considerately. In some cases, families opt to leave out the cause of death for privacy reasons.

Can social media be used to post an obituary?

Yes, social media is increasingly being used to share obituaries and death notices. This approach can quickly inform a community of the death and provide a space for shared condolences and remembrances.

What cultural considerations should be taken into account when writing an obituary?

Cultural considerations such as religious customs, traditions, and taboos should be taken into account when writing an obituary. It's important to respect these practices and to reflect them appropriately in the obituary content.

What if the family disagrees about what to include in the obituary?

Disagreements about obituary content can be difficult. It's best to have open communication among family members, possibly with a neutral party to mediate. Ultimately, the obituary should honor the deceased's life and respect the feelings of close family members.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, writing your own obituary is an option and can be a way to ensure your life story is told as you wish. It can also alleviate the burden on family members during a time of grief. If you choose to write your own obituary, it’s important to keep it updated and inform your family where it is stored.
