Randy Mitchell - January 06, 1967 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Tucson)
Obituary Preview: Randy Mitchell, age 57, died after a lingering illness on March 21, 2024 at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, AZ.
Randy was born at Fort Huachuca, AZ on 1-6-1967 to parents Cecil and Linda Mitchell, joining brother Rob. He lived in the Sierra Vista area for most of his life, except for times he moved with his family to Germany and Texas due to Cecil’s military service.
Randy graduated from Buena High School in Sierra Vista and went on to the Chevrolet ACE Certification Program in Phoenix. Randy was chosen as one of two students in Arizona to attend this specialized training. After graduation, he went to work at O’Reilly Chevrolet where he met and developed strong friendships with several people. After many years of "wrenching", Randy changed careers to working in human services, specifically to working with people with physical and developmental disabilities. It was there where he met his wife of 30 years, Sue. Finding that shared careers were too much, Randy moved on to working in Financial Services, ending his career at Pacific Insurance in Tucson, AZ. Randy and Sue married in 1993. They were blessed with two wonderful sons, Nicholas and Alexander who have grown into strong, capable young men. He absolutely loved coaching boys in all sports (ok, no soccer) and never missed a game, a performance or an event of theirs. A recent highlight of his life was when Randy officiated at Alex’s marriage to Chau on September 1, 2024. He was so proud and so humbled to perform that honor. And, he had been anticipating a return to New Orleans, LA in early April to celebrate the marriage of Nicholas and Chelsea. (not to mention, going back for the food!) But we know that he will be with us in spirit the entire time….we’ll have a “dat dog” for you, my dear! Next to his family, Randy’s main love was the New York Rangers hockey team. He never missed a game, and even postponed his son's baptism in order to watch game 6 of the SC playoffs in 1994. His sons found the NY Rangers hockey game broadcast and played it for him during his last hour of life on this earth. (They won!)
Randy's quick wit, sometimes biting sarcasm, but huge heart were loved by all who met him. He always left an impression on whoever he met. Never easily forgotten, he will be missed.
Preceded in death by his father, Cecil, and mother, Linda.
Survivors include Sue Henning-Mitchell, wife of Tucson, AZ; Nicholas Mitchell (Chelsea) son of New York, NY; Alexander Mitchell (Chau) son of Tucson, Arizona; Rob Mitchell, brother of Kingfisher, OK; Elaina Mitchell, niece, Oklahoma City, OK. Forever friends include Tone Smith, Tucson, AZ; Ned Ingram, Tucson, AZ, Todd and Tina Emmerich, Show Low, AZ.; and Ramiro Martinez of Tucson, AZ. And Mary Kaye Balacco, Boston, MA.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday. April 17, 2024. Location: Pho Can Tho Restaurant, 2746 N Campbell, Ave, Tucson AZ. Time: 4:00 pm. Informal sharing of memories.
The family expresses their extreme gratitude to everyone who has given their love and support during this difficult time.

Peter A. Berube - October 16, 1952 - March 11, 2024

Departed: 03/11/2024 (Tucson)
Obituary Preview: Peter A. Berube – October 16, 1952 – March 11, 2024
Sierra Vista, Arizona – Peter A. Berube, 71 passed away in the early morning hours of March 11, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Pete was born October 16, 1952, in Caribou, Maine, the son of Leo R. Berube and Mary E. (Day) Berube. Pete attended Caribou schools, after graduating in June 1971 he joined the U.S. Air Force spending 11 years in the Supply career field. Pete’s assignments after graduating from basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas, and a technical school in Colorado included: Cannon AFB in Clovis, New Mexico
Aviano AB, Italy - Aviano AB, Italy, a small U.S. air base located in northern Italy 45 minutes from the beaches of the Adriatic Sea by Venice and 45 minutes from the Dolomites in the Italian Alps to the north. While in Italy Pete learned how to skydive where he met his future wife, Kay who was also in the Air Force.
Loring AFB, Limestone, Maine – a short distance from where Pete grew up in Caribou. After spending two years there in the “frozen north” with Kay they headed back to Europe.
The last of Pete’s Air Force career included assignments to Zweibrucken AB, Germany, and NATO HQ in Brunssum, Holland.
Pete enjoyed being stationed in Europe and took advantage . . . making friends and experiencing the European lifestyle firsthand. . . the local customs & traditions, holidays, and of course
all the “fests” . . . trying all the different kinds of beers . . . He would always say the best was the “O-fest” (Oktoberfest} every
year in Munich . . . liter beers, bratwurst, and huge soft pretzels . . . he would always look forward to that time of year!! Pete especially liked driving on the autobahns and really missed that
when returning back in the States. . . He liked nice cars . . . from his 69 Ford Mach I “Henry” and his 74 Vette in Italy . . . to his 68 Camaro SS in northern Maine . . . to his 76 Porsche 911 Targa in Germany that was rebuilt similar to an 82
Porsche Carrara, complete with flared fenders and spoiler. Pete really liked working on and fixing them up and then getting behind the wheel and driving . . . he especially likes taking his Porsche for a ride on the autobahns in Germany . . . his “go fast” car!! He would tell you that he made lasting friendships throughout his military career . . . and especially so at Zwei . . . over 40yrs later the four friends Bruce, Frank, Eric, and Pete still stayed connected in each other’s lives . . . he will truly be missed!!
Pete’s friend Eric remembers the good times going to concerts and skiing while in Europe. He remembers Pete as a loyal friend, calling him just to check in no matter where they were living at the time.
Pete moved to Sierra Vista in December 2015 to be near Vicki, his youngest sibling. He would call frequently to see what was happening throughout each day. He met a few people from his apartment complex but would say he didn’t need any friends because he could rely on Vicki to take him to appointments or to the store when necessary.
Pete always made a point to check in with family from Maine. He called Gladys, or as he called her “Ma Hooey” a cousin from his dad’s side of the family every week, sometimes while she was busy playing Bingo. He would tell her that he’d call her back later and keep her updated on the Sierra Vista life. Pete would also reach out to other cousins Bob Brissette, Laura McPherson, and John Bragdon, who thought of Pete as a brother rather than a cousin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Mary Berube; his oldest brother Brent (Shorty); and his sisters Arlene (Pee Wee), Sharon, and Valerie.
Pete is survived by his brother Larry D. Berube of St Joseph, MO, sister Vicki L. (Mark) Lerma of Sierra Vista, AZ, Nieces Amber M. (Ivan) Santiago of Palm Bay, Florida, Andrea R. (Kyle) Kramer of El Paso Texas, Angela J. (Joshua) Haines of Waynesville, MO. He also has 3 grandnieces and 2 grandnephews Riley Haines, Hailey Kramer, Amelia Kramer, Owen Kramer, and Adderson (Ace) Kramer. He is also survived by many cousins and friends from Maine to Arizona. His friend, Frank put it eloquently, “To know him was to love him. The rest of the world just wouldn’t understand.”

Betty Mae Nicholson Phillips - November 13, 1922 - February 28, 2024

Departed: 02/28/2024 (Tucson)
Obituary Preview: Betty Mae Nicholson Phillips was born in Norfork, Nebraska on November 13, 1922, the youngest child of Charles and Hallie Jones Nicholson. The family, including older brother Don and middle sister Florence, lived close by Norfork in Madison, Nebraska until Betty was five when her mother packed up the kids and moved to Omaha. Family life was rather rocky for Betty as they moved often throughout the Omaha area and for a while she was even in an orphanage. Changes in schools were frequent and we figure it was her introduction to and beginning practice at finding and making friends wherever she went. Her teen years were filled with rollerskating and Woodman Circle (her mom worked for Woodman of the World) and, of course, school when she could fit it in. All gave great opportunities for socializing and skating provided the venue for meeting her future husband Duane.
With World War II imminent, they put off making any serious commitment. During the war Duane served in the Army with the Rangers and Betty worked as a clerk at the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha. Duane was granted a furlough in early 1945 from deployment to Europe. The war there was in its final stages. In less than two weeks Betty arranged their wedding including selecting gowns for herself and her attendants, ordering flowers and pictures, and arranging the minister and church. She knew how to get things done.
Betty and Duane lived for a short while in north Omaha with his mother. During that time, Susan was born. They then bought what had been a summer, lake cottage in Carter Lake, Iowa. Despite fire and flood, and to some extent because of them, the cottage was slowly remodeled and enlarged and the family too was enlarged with the birth of Bruce. Her child rearing years were filled with Girl Scouts, PTA (over the years holding every office as well as being room mother), Pearl Memorial United Methodist church programs and youth groups, square dancing, bowling, and canoeing with any and all. Since she was afraid of the water and couldn't swim, her canoeing years demonstrate her ability to trust others – in this instance her husband, Duane. All in keeping with her “keep moving” approach to life. As her kids headed into high school and junior high, she decided to go back to work with what started out as a part time sales job at JC Penney for the Christmas season. That stint was the beginning of an unexpected journey toward becoming Director of Personnel for the main, downtown JC Penney store in Omaha, Nebraska and the beginning of her passion for shopping at Penneys to play the game of “saving more than you spend.”
When the downtown store closed, she took some other assignments with JC Penney until her retirement. At that point she and Duane took up snowbirding and she ultimately had 42 years of migrations under her belt. Snowbirding was by no means the extent of her travel during this time. Other adventures included two masted schooner sailing on the east coast to inland passage cruises up to Alaska to camping in Mexico and most places in between as well as weeklong canoe trips in the boundary waters and a couple of weeks in Wales. Rarely did they travel alone but with family – especially sister Floss and her husband Russ - and friends forming a merry band along the way.
In 1969 her family expanded again when Susan married David and again in 1973 when they had twin sons, Drew and Josh. Shortly before that, Bruce moved to Tucson where he met and eventually married Debi in 1976 for a further expansion. That gave Betty and Duane the impetus to begin their annual pilgrimages to the desert southwest and allowed Betty to further develop skills shopping at Penneys.
In the early 70's Betty and Duane bought a cabin on the Elkhorn River not far from Omaha. Soon it became their summer home and was filled with family – kids, grand kids, siblings, and cousins – as well as great friends and kids from neighborhood programs at Pearl church. Duane did the inviting, the crafts, and playing. Betty did the hospitality, cooking, and game playing. The cabin also became some of the glue that held together more expansion of their family with 'good kids' who came as friends of her children, church workers, and people who just enjoyed the community they created. The more the merrier for Penneys shopping. We don't know when she began playing cards and games. Perhaps only her mother Hallie, the queen of canasta, and sister Floss would know for certain, but it has been a constant theme throughout her journey – playing with neighbors in Carter Lake, with her children Susan and Bruce in their childhood, with her grandsons Josh and Drew , with Carousel Ranch friends, and ultimately with her great grandsons Miles and Truman as well. Though she claimed to only play the cards she was given, her focused approach and her skill have earned her a reputation with all whom she has played as having remarkable luck!
1995 brought not only Betty and Duane's 50th wedding anniversary, but also the wedding of grandson Drew to Elisa for the next expansion of the family. Then in 2000, grandson Josh expanded it further by marrying Lara. And Drew and Elisa further contributed to the expansion with great grandsons --Miles in 2010 and Truman in 2012. More shopping at JC Penney.
In 2003 Betty's companion, friend, and driver Duane died. With others pitching in on the transportation, she was able to continue most of the lifestyle to which she had become accustomed. Summers in the north plains; winters in the desert.
And unexpectedly, at a pizza mixer between Carousel Ranch and Comanche Wells senior living parks a few years later, Bickley van Duyne entered her life and with him more travel (especially to upstate New York which was his home), more card playing, much laughter, and a whole new family to love and embrace with birthday and holiday cards and, of course, more shopping at JC Penney.
These later years following the death of her great “autumn time” companion, friend, and driver, Bick in 2013, have taken further adjustment but she was still snowbirding, still playing cards, still beating her kids, grand kids, and great grand kids at that endeavor, still laughing, and still making new friends at Urban Abbey, her Omaha church, St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Tucson and the ever changing Carousel Ranch, senior living community—her Tucson home for over 37 years – and where she still lived until two weeks prior to her death on February 27, 2024 at the age of 101.3.
The last few years and especially during the time of COVID she was gifted by the return of her sister Floss to Tucson. There was great joy in the time they were able to spend together caring, cooking, carping (they were sisters after all), and, of course, playing games.
When she turned 100 on November 13, 2022 there was a great gathering to celebrate in Tucson – followed by another grand event in Omaha to commemorate 100.5. And several other festivities were thrown in throughout the year.
A memorial service was held in March at St. Mark’s United Methodist in the Garden – the same location as her sister’s. And another memorial service will take place Saturday, May 11 at 3:00pm at Urban Abbey United Methodist in Omaha – followed by a picnic at David and Vicky Porter’s yard.
Memorials may be directed to the Omaha Living Hope Food Pantry (Betty & Duane helped start this pantry in the late 1960’s), Urban Abbey UMC in Omaha, Interfaith Community Service of Tucson, or St. Mark’s UMC in Tucson.

Richard W. Svenson - October 11, 1946 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (Tucson)
Obituary Preview: Richard W (Rick) Svenson 77 passed away quietly in Tucson, Arizona on February 22, 2024, after a long illness. During his final days, he was surrounded by his loving family. Rick was born in Long Island, New York City, New York on October 11, 1946. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, daughter Kellie Jung (Steve), son Eric (Emily), grandchildren Shane and Carden Jung, and sister Roslyn Kuh. Rick and Arlene were the love of each other’s life for 61 years having been high school sweethearts for five years before marrying in 1967.
Richard graduated from Norwich High School, in Norwich N.Y. at the age of 16 and then joined a Union Apprentice Program becoming a Journeyman Plumber four years later. Early in his plumbing career, Richard had a serious accident in a wet church basement when his jackhammer cut into an unknown electrical service and electrocuted him. His life was saved by a quick-thinking co-worker who cut off the power, but this incident caused him to suffer from health issues for the remainder of his life. Arlene noted that in spite of his health struggles, he managed to excel in every opportunity that was presented to him throughout his life. In 1978, the family moved to Tucson, AZ where Dick (as he was known to his colleagues) made a career change to work for design firms in the area of Quality Control and Construction Administration. Dick became an expert in his field over the next thirty years helping to design and build a number of micro-electronics manufacturing facilities for companies like IBM and Micron, plus several significant hospitals for organizations like UCLA and USC. Twenty-one of those years were spent at Anderson, DeBartolo, Pan in Tucson where his hard work and expertise were recognized with his promotion to Associate in spite of the fact that he never attended college.
In 2008, Rick was diagnosed with Wet Macular Degeneration, causing his eyesight to deteriorate rapidly. Soon after, Rick retired, and he and Arlene returned from Los Angeles to Tucson because of a familiarity with the area and an extensive low-vision/blind community. Rick and Arlene joined the Tucson Society of the Blind, the Udall Community Center, the TMC Senior Center, and the Lions Club. All embraced Rick and welcomed him as one of their old lost friends. Rick was able to care for his health and enjoyed every day he was able to. He especially enjoyed bowling for the blind.
The Covid lockdown was especially hard on Rick, and he never fully recovered. All his loved activities came to a halt. Rick and Arlene became creative in those fourteen months, keeping Rick active within the confines of the restrictions. However, the wear and tear on his health became quite a challenge for him. By the end of August 2023, he was in the hospital almost every two months, then rehab. Each time he was pleased with how much better he felt. Walking without a walker was a goal of his and he did … until he didn’t. Rick rose to the occasion with each challenge. While in rehab, he rooted for the AZ Diamond Backs baseball team in October, with his wife and daughter cheering the players on. Along with celebrating his birthday many residents and staff joined in. He had quite a following there who were very saddened to learn of his passing.
Finally, on February 22, 2024, Rick’s body simply gave out on him. The family never saw it coming because he came back from such impossible health issues before, they thought of Rick as strong even when he wasn’t, he always returned to the ones he loved.

Dora S. Ronquillo - November 28, 1936 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Tucson)
Obituary Preview: Dora Saenz Ronquillo – Obituary November 28, 1936 – February 19, 2024
Dora Saenz Ronquillo, 87, of Tucson, Arizona passed away peacefully on February 19, 2024, in her home, surrounded by her family. Dora was born November 28, 1936 in Tucson, Arizona. She was the oldest of nine siblings; three have preceded her in death, and she is survived by six.
On May 11, 1957, Dora married her loving companion, Daniel, who preceded her in death on May 29, 2018. Before Daniel’s passing, together they celebrated their 61st anniversary.
Dora was not only a loving & faithful wife, caring & selfless mother, endearing & compassionate grandmother, sensitive & kind-hearted aunt, nurturing & supportive cousin, but was an enduring friend to so many throughout her life. The energy she exuded put a smile on anyone who crossed her path. She brought laughter to everyone. And even through many of her most difficult moments in life, she taught everyone around her the importance of humor. Many times it was just a short & sweet, witty one-liner that made her recipient burst out in laughter. Dora’s children will always cherish her humorous side.
She was a very creative woman. Throughout her life she crocheted, embroidered, sewed, and quilted countless gifts for many. During her final years the many plants she cared for brought her comfort and joy. Before her vision declined she loved reading for years. Throughout her life she loved working on puzzles. Her son, Daniel, still remembers helping her finish a puzzle of the Taj Mahal when he was only four years old. Her final puzzle was completed on Valentine’s Day, a few days before her passing, which was a puzzle of an angel, given to her from her granddaughter, Sonya. Angels have always been very important to her. She collected them for years, and even the final Christmas ornaments she created were of angels.
She selflessly gave her enduring support of her husband, Daniel, particularly during his military career during the Viet Nam War. She loved traveling with him, including all their children. Dora’s faith and spiritual side touched many around her. Sharing many stories of the Saints to her children, she was a deep believer of the mystical side of her Catholic faith. She had a deep understanding of how much more there is to life than just our simple existence on this planet. She not only knew it, but she lived it every day of her life. Her countless visits to the San Xavier del Bac Mission to light a candle in prayer demonstrated her faith. Many in the family reached out to her for prayer. As her youngest daughter, Tricia, would often say, “She had a direct line to God.”
Dora is survived by her four children, Christine Miranda, Daniel Steven Ronquillo (Michael John Murphy), Mary Theresa Valencia (Ernest Valencia, Sr.) and Patricia Ann Olma (Mark Olma); 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Rosary and Viewing will be held at Angel Valley Funeral Home, 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85716 on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 (Viewing at 5:00 p.m.; Rosary at 6:00 p.m.). Ajo Way, Tucson, AZ 85713 on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest following the Mass at All Faiths Cemeteries, 2151 S. Avenida Los Reyes, Tucson, AZ 85748.

Emma Quijada Alvarez - January 12, 1935 - January 29, 2024

Departed: 01/29/2024 (Tucson)
Obituary Preview: On January 29, 2024, our hearts grew heavy as we bid farewell to Emma Alvarez, a cherished soul who graced this world with warmth and love for 89 beautiful years. Emma's journey began in Navojoa, Mexico, on January 12, 1935, and unfolded into a tale of love, resilience, and countless cherished memories. Naco, Mexico, witnessed the magical union of Emma and Tony Alvarez Sr. of Bisbee—a love story that knew no bounds. Emma proudly became an American Citizen, and together, she and Tony waltzed through life for 61 remarkable years until Tony's gentle departure on June 1, 2014
. Emma's days were painted with the hues of joy as she swayed in perfect harmony with Tony on dance floors, tended to her garden with loving care, and embarked on journeys that etched indelible memories in her heart. The Bisbee Country Club became her sanctuary, where she transformed into the legendary "Tiger Alvarez," long before such titles were celebrated. In 1976, the family's journey led them to Safford, AZ, where Emma continued to find solace in the gentle swing of her golf club. Her laughter echoed through the aisles of Morris Nursery and the corridors of Safford Walmart, leaving a trail of friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Emma's spirit was unwavering, surviving the trials of life as a two-time cancer conqueror. St. Rosa de Lima Church became a sanctuary for her faith, a relationship that spanned over 30 years, and later, St. Thomas of the Apostle in Tucson.
Yet, amidst all these chapters, Emma's greatest joy was her family. She reveled in the laughter of her grandchildren—Manual Alvarez, Chad and Aaron Mason, Andrew and Alex Alvarez—and marveled at the wonder of four great-grandchildren: January Emma, Bentley, Nova, and Hudson. Even her loyal companion, Janny, felt the warmth of her affection. As we bid farewell, we remember Emma not just for the vibrant tapestry of her life but for the enduring kindness that radiated from her gentle smile. In her memory, we find solace and gratitude for the countless moments that weave into the fabric of our shared memories.
Emma is survived by her two sisters, Malena and Alicia, and her children: Tony Alvarez Jr. (Karen), Alma Newberry, Phil Alvarez, and Barbara Alvarez. She joins her husband Tony, four sisters, and her only brother in the embrace of eternity.
