Jeffrey Bruce Bunce - April 29, 1951 - May 13, 2022

Departed: 05/13/2022 (Amarillo)
Obituary Preview: Jeffrey Bruce Bunce, 71--father, husband, companion, firefighter-paramedic, deadhead.
Jeff grew up in Berlin, CT with his parents Graeme H. Bunce and Beverly Durity Bunce, his brother James Bunce, and his sister Rebecca Bunce Connell. The 1970s irrevocably shaped Jeff, like so many twenty somethings growing up in that decade. He loved listening to the Grateful Dead, hanging out with his German shepherd-wolf, Darkstar, and smoking a good joint. He also was adamantly opposed to the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon, and anything or anyone he viewed as part of the establishment. He was given amnesty under President Ford and subsequently took a job as an orderly at a hospital. He got to know a patient at the hospital who was in an iron lung. The doctors and nurses were verbally abusive and neglectful towards the patient, and Jeff spoke up on his behalf but was ignored. Jeff, on ethical principles, left that job and lost his amnesty. Jeff was irreverent, stubborn, and even at times crass, but he was principled. The 1970s haunted him for the remainder of his life.
He met his future wife, Rebecca Gens, of Centerville, MA, at Whitehall Manor where they were both nurses aides. They fell in love and married in 1978. Jeff opened Rebecca’s eyes to many new activities such as camping and hiking. Together, they had two children, Matthew (Bunce) Kim of Hardwick, MA and Hillary (Bunce) Green of Amarillo, TX. Jeff’s children loved spending time with their father: camping, hiking, cruising around town with the windows down listening to Jeff’s music which eventually became known as classic rock. Rebecca, Matthew, and Hillary will remember him for his cooking elaborate dinners, his grilling freshly caught fish, his taking his family to Red Sox games and to Chatham A’s games, his taking his family to dig for clams early in the morning, and his wicked sense of humor. Hillary will remember him most for their time together fishing. Jeff also leaves behind his two grandchildren, James Bunce and Lillian Bunce-Green. They will remember him for being a loving grandfather. Along with his family, Jeff also leaves behind his companion Kim Hunter of Gloucester, MA and her family who considered Jeff a member of their own family.
Jeff was a dedicated firefighter and paramedic both in Chatham and in Boston. He took his job seriously and loved being a public servant. Going through a scrap book recently, he and his family reread letters of gratitude written by those people whose lives he saved on scene and in the ambulance. He was known among his colleagues and among the elderly crowd for starting a great IV. Jeff even delivered a couple of babies and one of those deliveries was reported on in The National Enquirer! His family was always proud of him and will continue to brag about his accomplishments.
Services are pending. Please send donations to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or a non-profit organization of your choice.

Christopher Ross Tucker - June 11, 1965 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Amarillo)
Obituary Preview: Christopher Ross Tucker, age 56 of Amarillo died at home surrounded by family on April 17, 2022
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Christopher was born on June 11, 1965 in Amarillo to his parents, Richard and Wilma Chambers Tucker.  He graduated from McCullum High School in Austin, Texas. He was an old hippie soul that enjoyed fishing, playing pool and most of all his family. Although for the most part he was laid back and relaxed, he was known to have a bit of a stubborn streak!
Christopher was preceded in death by his father and by a son, Brett.
He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Jane Nannette Tucker, Brennon Nicole Chloe Tucker, , and Brayleigh Tucker; by his sons, Matthew Christopher Lewis Tucker, Shawn Davon Kyle Tucker, Ryan Collin Palmer-Tucker and Landon Tucker; by his grandchildren, Macaylie Jane Atchley, Kenslei Rai Ioor, Emery Tucker and Ellisyn Tucker; and by the mother of his two youngest children Brittane Hennig.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement, often published in newspapers or online, that reports on the death of an individual. It typically includes a brief biography, information about the funeral or memorial services, and can also serve as a tribute to the deceased's life accomplishments and legacy.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a distinction. A death notice is usually shorter and fact-based, providing only essential details such as the person's name, age, and information on the funeral service. An obituary, on the other hand, is more detailed and personalized, often including a biography and tributes.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. Some individuals also opt to write their own obituaries as part of their pre-planning process.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the following: the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth, date of death, a brief account of their personal life and professional achievements, details about the surviving family members, and information regarding the funeral or memorial service, such as date, time, and location.

How do I publish an obituary in a newspaper?

To publish an obituary in a newspaper, contact the newspaper's obituary desk or review their submission guidelines, which often can be found on their website. There may be a cost associated based on length and any included photo.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many websites and social media platforms allow for online publication of obituaries. These can range from online versions of traditional newspapers to dedicated memorial websites or social media posts.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely, from a short paragraph to several hundred words. The length often depends on the medium it’s published in, such as newspaper space constraints, or the wishes of the family.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and not necessary if the family prefers to keep it private. Some families opt to disclose this information, especially if it's related to a public issue like illness, to raise awareness.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days of a death to timely inform friends and the community of the passing and details of memorial services. However, it may be published later if there are delays in service planning or other factors.

Should an obituary include a photo?

While including a photo is not obligatory, it is a common practice as it personalizes the obituary and helps people visually recognize the deceased. If you choose to include a photo, select one that accurately reflects the individual.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should match the life and personality of the deceased, as well as the family’s wishes. It can range from formal and respectful to warm and anecdotal. The key is to honor the memory of the person who has passed away.

Can I include a quote or a poem in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include a meaningful quote, poem, or religious text in an obituary to reflect the beliefs or personality of the deceased or to offer comfort to the readers.

How can I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

Double-check all information such as the spelling of names, dates, and locations. It can also be helpful to have another family member or a close friend review the obituary before submission. Accuracy is important to honor the deceased and provide correct information to the public.

What can be done if an obituary contains an error?

If an error is discovered after publication, swiftly contact the publication to request a correction. Many publications understand the sensitivity of such errors and will be accommodating.

Is it okay to have humor in an obituary?

If humor would have been appreciated by the deceased and is in good taste, it can be incorporated into an obituary. This should be approached carefully and thoughtfully, considering the wide range of people who will read it.

Can an obituary be too personal?

While personal details can enrich an obituary, it's important to balance personal anecdotes with respect for the deceased's privacy and the feelings of all who knew them.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary greatly from free to several hundred dollars, depending on the length and the publication. Some newspapers charge by line, word, or column inch, including the cost of any photographs.

Are there templates available for writing an obituary?

Yes, many funeral homes and online resources offer templates to help you start writing an obituary. These can provide a good structure while you add personalized details.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It is not necessary to hire a professional, but some people opt for professional writers or funeral directors to ensure the obituary is well-crafted and error-free.

Can donations be requested in lieu of flowers?

Yes, it's quite common to request charitable donations in the deceased's name in lieu of flowers. Be sure to include clear details about where donations should be sent.

Is it appropriate to mention surviving pets?

If pets were an important part of the deceased's life, it is entirely appropriate to mention them as surviving members of the family.

How can family members be listed in the obituary?

Family members are usually listed in descending order, starting with the closest relations such as spouse or partner, followed by children, grandchildren, and so on. Some families also include extended relatives and special friends.
