Lee Lefear - November 07, 1940 - August 11, 2023

Departed: 08/11/2023 (El Dorado)
Obituary Preview: Lee Freeman grew up in El Dorado and graduated in 1959 from Washington High School and remained an active member of his class, participating in their reunions until his health failed. Professing a hope in Christ, he was baptized March 4, 1962, at the Barnes St. Church of Christ under the leadership of Minister Cloyd Nation and remained a faithful and active member of the Church of Christ.
Lee Freeman was preceded in death in 1998 by his wife Mattie Bell Brock. They had no children of their own but several years before her passing, lovingly adopted Quintin Davis Jones (former name Tobyas Lefear), whom they both loved and cherished. After the passing of Mattie, Freeman continued as a single father to nurture Quintin (Tobyas) to adulthood.
Lee worked for eleven years at Warner Brown Hospital where he and Mattie met and was later employed at Lion Oil Company where he had a lengthy career of twenty-nine years before retiring January 31, 2003. He retired as an Operating Engineer and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local Union 381.
He was a faithful and active member of the Plum Street Church of Christ, formerly Cargile Church of Christ, serving under several pastors, where he continued to serve dutifully, until his health failed. Lee taught vacation bible school, Wednesday night bible study, served as superintendent and also served in the capacity of adult Sunday school teacher, as well as in many other capacities throughout his years there. Serving as trustee, along with Brother James Morris, he was also instrumental in the building of the new facility and faithfully helped to progressively manage and oversee the finances of the church for many years. He would often teach during conferences and would travel to the Annual Labor Day Lectureship at the McAlmont Church of Christ, where he tried to make sure he met up with his younger brother when he was there in Little Rock. He loved the Church of Christ where he prayed and served and remained faithful to its mission.
Lee Freeman loved family reunions and when he could, loved getting together with his family for fun, plenty of food and fellowship, which often included a game of horseshoes and his favorite, dominoes. Even while he was ill, he managed to still beat his brother and sister-law in a few games. Mattie's family continued to include him in their gatherings, where there was always an abundance of food, which he often bragged about, but would always proceed it by saying "I ain't bragging, but. An avid golfer, he played as often as he could as a member at the Lion Club Golf course. He continued to play frequently after retirement and competed in the Lion Oil Golf Tournament where he and some of the guys managed to take home a number of trophies. He also loved playing with his cousin Jim and younger brothers Lee H. (deceased) and Billy when he could. One of only a few to do so, Lee earned bragging rights for his 167-yard hole-in-One on the 8th hole at the Lions club. Lee also willingly gave golf lessons to those who asked, having learned the game as a teenager himself, while working as a caddy. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to attend football games at the stadium and go daily to the Champagnolle Landing Wellness Center for lunch, exercise, more dominoes, and other daily social activities.
In 2014 he took his first and only flight with his younger brother and family, flying to Atlanta, then to DC to the family reunion. Flying above the snow- like clouds and sightseeing in the capital city, Lee had the time of his life after emptying his always-full pockets at security. Lee loved to travel. He cherished the many road trips with his younger brother Lee Henry and sometimes Billy to Milwaukee, Louisiana, California, Texas and wherever family and the reunion or family event was.
Lee was well respected, dependable, and often relied upon by friends and family whom he helped when called upon to do so. After his health declined, he continued to enjoy an occasional game of dominoes and watching westerns on television.
Lee Freeman leaves to mourn his passing son Quintin (Tobyas), sister Esteen Brock (Joe), brothers Billy (Marilyn), Roy Lee, Herman, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of someone's death, often accompanied by a brief biography of the deceased. It serves to inform the public and acknowledge the passing of an individual, typically including details about their life, family, and any funeral or memorial services. Obituaries are traditionally published in newspapers and online.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is generally a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written in a narrative form. It includes biographical details, achievements, and information about the family. A death notice, on the other hand, is a simple announcement of a person's death. It may include basic information such as the name, age, date of death, and details of the memorial service.

Why is an obituary important?

Obituaries serve several important functions: they formally announce the passing of an individual, celebrate their life and accomplishments, and notify the community of the details regarding any upcoming funeral or memorial services. Obituaries can also provide a historical record for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the services. Sometimes a newspaper staff writer will draft an obituary based on information provided by the family or obtained through an interview. In some cases, individuals even write their own obituaries in advance.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, either in print or online. They can also be found on dedicated online memorial websites, the funeral home's website, social media platforms, and in some cases, trade or organizational publications.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life story, notable achievements, information about their family, and details on the funeral or memorial services. Some obituaries also include a photograph of the deceased.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

While there is no legal requirement to publish an obituary, it is a common practice to publicly acknowledge a person's passing and provide information for those who may wish to attend services or offer condolences.

How long after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published shortly after a person's passing, usually within a few days. This timing helps to ensure that the information about funeral or memorial services is available to friends, family, and the community in time for them to make arrangements to attend.

How do you write a respectful obituary?

To write a respectful obituary, focus on commemorating the life of the deceased with empathy and care. Include meaningful details that celebrate their life, accomplishments, and the impact they had on others. Be sure to confirm facts with the family and respect their wishes regarding what should be included or omitted.

Can an obituary be too long?

An obituary should be concise enough to convey essential information without overwhelming readers. Newspaper obituaries are often limited by word count due to space constraints, while online obituaries may allow for more detail. The key is to balance celebrating the person's life with readability.

What if there are no funeral services planned?

If there are no funeral services planned, you may still publish an obituary to announce the individual's passing. In such cases, the obituary can suggest alternative ways to honor the deceased, such as making a donation to a charity they supported or sharing memories online.

Is it possible to include a picture in an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. A picture can be a comforting visual reminder of the individual and add a personal touch to the announcement.

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspaper obituaries are often priced by word count or length, while many online memorial sites offer free or fixed-price postings. It's important to inquire about pricing before submitting an obituary.

Can anyone submit an obituary?

Typically, obituaries are submitted by family members or the funeral home. However, friends and others close to the deceased can also submit an obituary, as long as they have accurate information and the family's consent.

How do you handle sensitive information in an obituary?

Sensitive information, such as the cause of death or family disputes, should be handled with care. It is not necessary to disclose the cause of death if the family wishes to keep it private. Any family complexities can be addressed delicately or omitted entirely if they might cause distress.

Do obituaries have to follow a specific format?

While there is no strict format for obituaries, they typically follow a general structure: announcement of death, biographical sketch, list of surviving relatives, information on services, and any preferred charity for donations. However, there is room for creativity and personalization.

What is the best way to find an old obituary?

To find an old obituary, you can search online archives of newspapers, contact the local library or historical society, or use online databases and memorial websites specifically designed for such searches.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after it's been published?

Once an obituary is published in a newspaper, it typically cannot be corrected or updated. However, online obituaries often offer the possibility of making changes. If errors are found, contact the publication or platform promptly to inquire about their correction policy.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and reflective of the life being commemorated. It can range from formal and reverent to warm and anecdotal, depending on the personality of the deceased and the family's wishes.

What should be avoided in an obituary?

In an obituary, avoid disclosing overly personal or sensitive information that may upset the family or the deceased's memory. Refrain from using humor or language that could be misinterpreted or considered inappropriate. Always prioritize respect and discretion.

How do you begin an obituary?

An obituary can begin with a straightforward statement about the passing of the individual, including their name, age, and date of death. Alternatively, you may start with a more narrative approach, highlighting a defining aspect of the person's life or a memorable trait.

What can be done to keep an obituary within a reasonable budget?

To keep an obituary within a reasonable budget, focus on the essential information and keep the length to a minimum if you're paying by word count. Consider publishing in local or community papers rather than larger publications. Additionally, you can explore free online obituary services.
