Departed: 02/27/2024 (Andrews)
Obituary Preview: Andrews ~
Mary Frances Sowell, 81, was reunited in heaven with the love of her life, Henry Berry Sowell, on February 27, 2024. She passed peacefully at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Sowell was born in Kingstree on June 17, 1942, a daughter of Harold Thomas Bath and Gladys Delean Blakely Bath. Mary Frances grew up in Andrews and graduated from Andrews High School. Not long after, she met her one true love at BC Moore.
She was a member of Trinity Global Methodist Church, where she loved attending Sunday School and hearing the choir sing. Her place of solace was Lakewood Campground, where she would sit on the porch and enjoy a good book and the summer sun. Though she was Mary Frances to many, her favorite little people called her “Nanny.” She adored her time with her family and grandchildren; but especially those great grands, as no love compared to her love for them. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sowell is predeceased by: her brothers, Habby Bath and Mark Bath, sister-in-law, Beverly Bennotti, brother-in-law, Peter Bennotti, and a nephew, Tommy Bath.
Surviving are: a daughter, Jan Sowell Rimmer (Dugger) of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Love of Florence; Reed Rimmer (Haleigh) of Georgetown; and Blake Rimmer of Georgetown; six great-grand children, Hayden, Kellan, Max, Liam Love, Doc and Cooper Rimmer; a brother, Dan Bath (Cuqui), one sister, Gloria Westbrook (Frank), and Felitcha Pinckney, a bonus daughter, and a number of nieces & nephews she loved dearly.

John E. Wilson - August 15, 1953 - February 11, 2024

Departed: 02/11/2024 (Andrews)
Obituary Preview: John E. “Ed” Wilson was born in Reidsville, NC to James E. and Colleen Busick Wilson on August 15, 1953.
Ed’s early years were filled with family and church activities, farm chores, school sports, hunting, fishing, and Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of “Eagle Scout”. He had fond memories of yearly family vacations to White Lake and Carolina Beach.
After graduating from Reidsville Senior High in 1971, Ed proudly joined and served in the US Navy.
Post-Navy, Ed settled in Carolina Beach, NC. During that time, he worked on several commercial fishing boats and head boats from North Carolina in the summers to the Florida Keys in the winter.
In the early 1980’s after meeting his future wife and fishing buddy, Ed decided it was time to grow up and take a land-based job. That was the beginning of the 30+ year retail management career that took him from Carolina Beach, NC to Charleston, SC to Raleigh, NC then Gainesville, GA and finally to Georgetown County, SC.
He loved great food (particularly seafood) and further loved to share great food with friends and neighbors. Other passions included fishing, growing vegetables, following Chase Elliott and NASCAR, Penn State Wrestling and UNC Basketball.
Behind his gruff exterior, Ed had a heart of gold that only those who truly knew him could see. He loved dogs and later developed a love of cats. Over the years many stray dogs were brought home to be loved and cared for.
Ed is survived by his wife, Liz, son, John of Georgia, and brother Tim (Karen) of North Carolina.
Special thanks to Amedisys Hospice for helping him on his final journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of someone, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It serves as a remembrance and celebrates the life of the deceased, providing information about their life, death, and upcoming funeral services or memorials.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter announcement of someone's passing and usually contains basic information, such as the name, age, place of residence, and information about the funeral service. Obituaries are more detailed and include a biography and the deceased's achievements and connections.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. Occasionally, some individuals may write their own obituaries prior to their passing as part of their end-of-life planning.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

Begin by announcing the death of the person, including their full name, age, and place of residence, followed by the date and place of death. Proceed with details about their life, family, career, and any significant achievements or associations.

What details should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, place of birth and residence, date and cause of death if desired, a brief biography, family member details, service times, and any preferred charities for donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of obituaries can vary, ranging from a few sentences for a simple death notice to several hundred words for a detailed life story. The length often depends on the space available in the publication and the life story of the individual.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the newspaper or website's pricing structure. Some charge by line, word, or inch, whereas some online platforms may offer free or fixed-price listings.

Should the cause of death be included?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and not a requirement. Some families prefer to share this information, while others may choose to keep it private due to sensitivity or privacy concerns.

How do you honor a deceased person’s achievements in an obituary?

To honor the deceased’s achievements, highlight significant milestones, awards, or contributions to their community or field of work. Mentioning their impact on others and their legacy can also be a meaningful tribute.

Is a photo necessary?

A photo is not necessary but can be a meaningful addition to an obituary. It provides a visual remembrance for readers and helps personalize the tribute.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral services?

While most obituaries are published promptly after death and before the funeral services, it's possible to publish an obituary after services have taken place, especially for a more extensive memorial piece.

Are obituaries published in multiple locations?

Obituaries can be published in multiple places, including local newspapers, online obituary platforms, social media, community bulletins, and sometimes national newspapers, depending on the deceased's prominence.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal or sensitive information that could compromise the deceased or family's privacy, or details that would be inappropriate or distressing to readers.

How should a surviving family be listed?

Surviving family members are typically listed in order of their relation to the deceased, starting with the closest (e.g., spouse, children) and moving to more extended family (e.g., siblings, grandchildren), if space permits.

Should you mention predeceased family members?

Yes, it is common to mention predeceased family members to acknowledge important relationships in the deceased's life and to provide a clearer picture of the family structure, though it should be concise.

Is it appropriate to include religious text or verses?

Including religious texts or verses is appropriate if it reflects the beliefs and wishes of the deceased or the family. It can provide comfort and convey the values important to the individual.

What is the etiquette for sending condolences?

Condolences can be sent in the form of a sympathy card, flowers, a charitable donation in the deceased's name, or a personal message to the family. It is important to be respectful and offer genuine expressions of sympathy.

How can an obituary help in the grieving process?

Writing an obituary can be a therapeutic exercise, helping the bereaved process their feelings by reflecting on the significance of the life lost. Reading the obituary can also provide comfort to family and friends as they see the life and impact of their loved one celebrated and acknowledged.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

It is possible to correct or update an obituary after publication, especially if it's published online; however, it may be difficult or not possible with printed media, depending on the publication's policy and timeline.

Where can one find examples of obituaries for reference?

Examples of obituaries can be found in local newspapers, online obituary databases, funeral home websites, and various templates available online to assist those who are writing an obituary for the first time.

Is there a protocol for the length of time an obituary should appear?

There is no set protocol for the length of time an obituary should appear. It may remain online indefinitely or in newspaper archives, but the prominence of the notice is usually focused around the period immediately following death up to the time of funeral services.
