Victor "Vic" Pavlenko - July 09, 1944 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Hood River)
Obituary Preview: Victor Victorovich Pavlenko passed away in Hood River, OR, on Monday, April 15, following a long illness. Vic was 79.
Vic was born in Chicago, IL on July 9, 1944, and primarily grew up in Peoria, IL. The Pavlenkos spent much of their summers at the Illinois Valley Yacht & Canoe Club, where Vic and his brother, Alex, learned to sail and swim competitively.
Vic attended college at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. At Valpo, Vic majored in business, but more importantly, he met his wife and partner of 57 years, Nancy. Vic charmed Nancy with his curiosity and sense of adventure, and the two were married in December 1966, as Nancy was starting her teaching career and Vic began his master’s degree at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA.
Vic graduated from Wartburg in 1971 and was ordained at Canton Lutheran Church in Canton, SD, where he was called as an associate pastor. All told, Vic and Nancy spent 13 years living in Canton, raising their daughters, Laura and Catherine.
1983 marked a big shift for Vic’s career and for his family. Vic accepted a role as head of strategy at New Vector, a cellular telephone start-up based in Bellevue, WA. In 1986, Vic was promoted to a broader role at New Vector’s parent company, US West, and he and the family moved to Greenwood Village, CO. There Vic helped lead the development of US West’s cellular networks and partnerships in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Russia. In 1993, with their daughters both in college, Vic and Nancy moved to Moscow, where Vic was named president of US West’s Russia operations and its local cellular joint-venture.
Vic retired from US West in 1996 and returned to his pastoral career. He was called to Good Samaritan Lutheran Church in Lanham, MD and St. John Lutheran Church in Erie, PA.
In 2013, Vic and Nancy moved to Hood River. Vic enjoyed the Hood River lifestyle, sailing his boat on the Columbia River, serving as a member of the Hood River Planning Commission, volunteering at the Lions Club and as a spiritual counselor and advocate for prisoners in Oregon’s Department of Corrections, and occasionally preaching at Riverside Community Church.
Vic was an avid reader and student of international affairs. He sought adventure and was always curious about others, interviewing friends and strangers alike to learn more about their life experiences, interests, and dreams. He made his own drums and led drumming circles for children and adults. Every dog Vic met was perfect and earned a scratch on the tummy.
As the loudest family cheerleader, Vic enthusiastically rooted for Nancy, his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren in the classroom, on sports fields and racecourses, at musical performances, and in the workplace.
Vic is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughters Laura (Josh) Lutton and Catherine (T) Dalbey, grandchildren Ted and Cal Lutton and Hugh and Anna Dalbey, and nephew Nicholas Pavlenko. Vic was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Z. and Lucy, and his brother, Alex.

Kent Earl Lambert - November 16, 1938 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Hood River)
Obituary Preview: Kent Earl Lambert, 85, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in the evening of April 9, 2024 while working on one of his magnificent Austin-Healy classic car restoration projects. Kent’s family thanks the Pine Grove Fire Department for their prompt and caring response.
Son of Wildred Lambert and Ronald Lambert, Kent was born on November 16, 1938 in Vancouver, Washington. His parents divorced when he was a boy, and he grew up with his mother’s loving care in Vancouver, Washington, graduating from Hudson’s Bay High School in 1957. His love of the outdoors began at a young age, instilled by his mentors who taught him to fly fish and by his many Boy Scout camping adventures throughout the Pacific Northwest. When he turned 18, Kent was only one badge away from being awarded the Eagle Scout when he broke his leg and couldn’t complete his final badge. His love of mechanics and engineering also began very early in life, growing into a lifelong fascination of steam engines, beautiful cars, and antique clocks. He always exhibited an adventurous and fun-loving spirit paired with his persistent commitment to excellence in any interest or project he took on.
A ROTC college student, Kent graduated from Oregon State University (OSU) in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics. He met his wife, Judy, at OSU through their fraternity and sorority activities. Kent and Judy married on August 3, 1963 and spent their honeymoon relocating to Chicago for Kent to enroll in an MBA program at Northwestern University. After completing his graduate studies, Kent held several management positions in Minneapolis, Kansas City, Boise, and Vancouver. In 1970, he moved to Hood River to partner with Judy’s father and brother in leading the family business, Lage Orchards, Inc. For more than four decades at the helm of Lage Orchards (farmers never really retire), Kent propelled the family farm through significant expansions in the orchard’s business model and operations.
Kent was deeply embedded in the community life of Hood River. He was active in the Crag Rats since first moving to Hood River, even serving as their “Big Squeak” several times. He climbed and hiked Mount Hood and its glaciers more times than his family can remember, and only fell in a deep crevasse one time when he was on a rescue mission for a school group that had been trapped in the wintery weather conditions. For many years, he also served on the local advisory committee for Northwest Farm Credit and as a volunteer fireman with the Pine Grove Fire Department. Kent was also heavily involved in the local arts and culture scene. Just as one example, he was a founding member of the Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta, playing his violin as concert master for around 30 years.
After his wife’s death, Kent gradually developed a new role for himself as one of America’s leading experts in Austin-Healy restorations. As the “keeper” of the Pacific Northwest hoard of car replacement parts, he was fully engaged in the regional and international communities of Austin-Healy afficionados.
Kent was predeceased by his wife, Judy, in 2010. He is survived by his sons, Terry and Brad; his grandchildren, Kyle and Kate; his stepbrother, Ted; his half siblings, Lori and Mike; as well as two sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Kent will always be remembered for his pursuit of precision and his palpable and infectious energy for life. He was a deeply beloved father, uncle, cousin, brother, and friend. His incredible memory and legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all those who loved him.
A celebration of Kent Lambert’s life will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Mr. Hood Winery, located at 2882 Van Horn Drive in Hood River.

Charles Virgil Tuttle was born to Virginia Lee and Charles Vaughn Tuttle on September 8, 1947 in McMinnville, Oregon. He was greeted by two brothers Jerry and Claude Hensen. The family moved to Bakersfield,Ca. where he first attended school. When he was 7 they moved back to Oregon. They bought a home on Wy’East Drive where he grew up. Charles attended school at Odell Grade, Mid Valley Middle School and Wy’East high school, class of 1966. In 1967 Charles started working for Diamond Fruit Growers. He worked at the cannery driving a lift truck and worked his way up to production manager. In 1984 they sadly locked the cannery doors for the last time. After that Charles went to work for Carson Oil driving a tanker and delivering fuel, but Diamond Fruit was in his blood, so he took an extra part time job hauling fruit for them when needed. Then in 1990 he went back to full time at Diamond Central as Cold Storage Manager. Where he was in charge of receiving and shipping. In 2008 he retired, but not for long. His brother Claude thought he needed a part time job and knew Steve and Bob Benton could use some help. So he worked for them through pear harvest for a couple of years. He appreciated his employers, co-workers and employees. Charles considered himself lucky to have known them all. In his spare time, he proudly became Georgia’s personal domestic engineer.
He married Sandy after high school and they had Three children Tony, Trisha and Kevin. Later he married Peggy who helped raise the kids. In 1991 he married his life partner Georgia who added three more children to the family, Donna, Trisha, and Tyler.  Charles lovingly referred to their new brood as the Brady Bunch.
Throughout the years he enjoyed boating, water skiing, jeeping, fishing, golfing, camping, and traveling. He tried it all, one at a time. He was a member of the Elks club for a number of years, the American Legion as a Son of a Legionair, and the Eagles. He had a gift of gab even tho he claimed to not be much of a conversationalist. The last twelve years he and Georgia became snowbirds. They loved Yuma and quickly became friends with many people and referred to them as their Yuma family.
The last three years of his life he struggled with many medical problems. In February he fell ill and decided to come home for further treatment. On their way home they spent a night outside Tonopah, Nevada, a favorite place of his. That night he told Georgia he just wanted to go home. God decided it was his time and on April 1st he passed in his sleep very peacefully.

Janey Berg - September 16, 1945 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Hood River)
Obituary Preview: Shirley Jane Berg,  “Janey”
Shirley Jane Berg died peacefully at home in Hood River, Oregon March 28, 2024. She suffered from advanced dementia. She remained so sweet and loving; consistently telling her daughters how beautiful they are. She continued to recognize her loved ones. She developed a love of tattoos.  She never saw one she didn’t like. And she always found comfort in her old country songs. She was born to Robert Curtis Lantis and Hope Montana Johnson on September 16, 1945 in Great Falls Montana.  She had 4 siblings.  She is predeceased by Carol Lynne Lantis and Robert Lynn Lantis.  She had 2 other sisters, Patricia Hagquist and Barbara Jean Lantis.
She grew up in Lincoln, Montana.  She would fondly recall swimming the Blackfoot river in the summer and helping her dad feed potato peelings to the local deer population in the winter.  She boarded away for high school and graduated from Helena high school in 1964.
Mom married her sweetheart, Dennis Berg, on January 6, 1966 in St Anthony, Idaho after knowing each other for 17 days.  She was singing in the VFW club surrounded by 5 other men when Dennis put a quarter in the jukebox and danced her away under the mistletoe.  When he made to move in for a kiss, she turned her head, he kissed her on the neck and that was that. They were in love.  They were side by side until her passing.
They moved 23 times in the first 13 years of marriage.  Once Dad found the Hood River Valley they stayed for over 45 years.  The farm was full of chickens, ducks, geese, horses, cows, sheep, dogs, cats and rabbits. When asked what she grew on their farm, she replied, “Children”.
Mom worked primarily in the home and raised 7 children.  Shirley, Mary, Mark, Katina, Karyn, Justin and Charity. Being a mother was her greatest joy.  Mom made sure there was bread just out of the oven when her kids got off the bus.  Her life was filled with school sports, games, plays, candy land, music & her church.
She lovingly made matching dresses for her kids for Easter and Christmas.  Our favorite Christmas memories include homemade Barbie furniture and homemade Barbie wardrobes.   We also remember the year Cabbage Patch dolls were impossible to find, we got homemade ones.
Mom baked and decorated beautiful wedding cakes for friends and family. Her beautiful gardens were full of herbs, flowers and vegetables.  She was also a dedicated herbalist who helped many people in the valley with herbs, salves and tinctures.
After her children grew, she learned beautiful calligraphy which decorated her walls and those of her children.  Mom was talented musically.  She sang and wrote songs.   She played piano, guitar, violin and accordion.   She had perfect pitch. She was a member of a double quartet. She sang in her church choir. Mom also arranged special musical programs for Christmas and Easter.
Her relationship with her Savior was very important to her.  She was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1961. She was sealed for time and eternity to her husband and children in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1971. She served in numerous leadership positions within the church and taught many classes. She was a brilliant scriptorian. She had a firm testimony that Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of the world. We feel peace with the hope that we will be reunited with our Mom after this life and that families can be together forever.
She is survived by her 25 Grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren: Christopher Nye, Denise Folkman, Kevin Nye, Hayley Hawkins, Elizabeth Wilnauer, Allyssa Wells, Emma Schade, Madisyn Thorpy, Colton Berg, Normandy Labrum, Thor Labrum, Cassius Labrum, Steel Labrum, Jaley Labrum, Abram Labrum, Reagan Labrum, Jenna Berg, Morgan Berg, Taryn Berg, Anna Berg, Logan Berg, Wyatt Manning, Kenzi Manning, Blake Manning, Kass Manning, predeceased by Addilyn Manning and Greta Labrum.  Great grandchildren: Tano, Riyo, Hadley, Everly, Taylor, Julie, Scottie, Brooklyn, Blake, Brody, Holland, Chase, Rowen, Asher, and Shiloh.
There was a loving reunion in heaven for Janey with her special friend, Joan Pratt, and her best friend of 50 years, Ida Hatch.
Mom created a loving family with Dennis and their children. She collected many people into her circle over the years and made a family of friends and loved ones. Services for Janey are planned for as follows; Urn Committal & Dedication of Grave
10:15 am, Friday, April 19th, 2024 at Willamette National Cemetery of Portland. Memorial Service
11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20th, 2024 at The Hood River Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Gordon McCarty - May 26, 1929 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Hood River)
Obituary Preview: On March 9, 2024, Gordon Brian McCarty went home to be with the Lord. He was living at Brookside Manor in Hood River. Gordon was born May 26, 1929, in Brookings, South Dakota, to George and Mary (Walters) McCarty. He grew up with siblings Walt, Mary “Gene”, and Marge. Some of Gordon’s fond boyhood memories included snow fun during South Dakota winters, selling ice cream and magazines, playing drums in the band, hunting pheasants, and traveling with his family. Gordon loved dancing to the tunes of the 1940s, practicing steps with sisters Gene and Marge. His Daddy, a professor of speech and debate and a public speaker, and Mother, a homemaker, took their children on multi-state adventures in conjunction with George’s speaking engagements. The family enjoyed good stories, picnics, reunions, and a spirit of play that Gordon demonstrated throughout his life.
Gordon’s family moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, where he completed his senior year of high school and then earned an education degree at Indiana State Teacher’s College. In 1951 he joined the Navy, serving at various Naval Air stations in the US and attending Officer’s Candidate School and electronics training for radio and radar maintenance. Upon completing military service, he took his first job teaching woodshop, printing, and mechanical drawing in Yuba City, California.
During summer graduate work in Berkeley, California, in 1960, Gordon met LaDonna  at a church event. He moved to Maryland for further studies and the two wrote letters. In 1962 they married in Portland, Oregon, then road-tripped to Maryland to make their first home. Gordon continued to teach junior high shop class. During vacations, they car-camped and toured the East Coast, taking in history and the arts.
In 1975, with new daughter Kathleen, Gordon and LaDonna moved to the Hood River Valley, where Gordon purchased an orchard. The family attended First Baptist, now Faith Bible. Over the years, Gordon and LaDonna extended their table to share hospitality with many. The two traveled in the US, as well as to Japan, Costa Rica, and Europe. After retiring from the orchard, Gordon spent a few years working part-time for the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station. He loved the outdoors, and wherever he went, Gordon marveled at God’s handiwork in nature, capturing beauty with his camera. He made greeting cards from his photos and wrote notes of encouragement to brighten a day. He took part in The Dalles Camera Club for many years. Gordon’s love of song meant singing in church and community choirs; he would find the bass line and sing along no matter the occasion. Using his woodwork and mechanical skills, he repaired, designed, and built many practical solutions for home and orchard. In more recent years, Gordon enjoyed writing his life stories with friends in the Down Manor writers’ group. Gordon’s storytelling, wit, and love for learning and conversation continued to the last. When asked, “How was your day?” he would frequently reply, “Every day we’re given is a gift!”
Gordon was predeceased by wife LaDonna (2009), brother Walt, and sister Gene Oxsen. He is survived by daughter Kathleen, sister Marge Hauser, and numerous McCarty and Sandahl nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
On Saturday, March 30, at 10:00 am, a service to remember and give thanks will be held at Faith Bible Church (1889 Belmont Dr, Hood River, OR 97031); a reception will follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Bible Church (Hood River) or Mercy Ships (Garden Valley, Texas).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of someone's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms, which includes a brief account of their life, family details, and information about upcoming funeral or memorial services. It is a way to publicly acknowledge the loss of a life and to inform the community of the person's passing.

Is an obituary different from a death notice?

Yes, an obituary is different from a death notice. While both announce the death of a person, an obituary is longer and includes more detailed information about the individual's life, legacy, and family. In contrast, a death notice is usually shorter, often paid for, and provides basic details such as the name, dates of birth and death, and information on the funeral service.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members, close friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, the person who has passed away might have written their own obituary in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. Professional journalists may also write obituaries for notable individuals.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, a brief summary of their life, accomplishments, career, hobbies, and family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, and special messages from the family or a request for donations to a charity in lieu of flowers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper or website, contact the publication directly for their submission guidelines. They will provide information on word count, format, deadlines, and costs associated with publishing the obituary. Most newspapers have online forms or email addresses where obituaries can be submitted.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

The appropriate length for an obituary varies, but it typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. For newspapers, it may be limited by space constraints and costs. An obituary should be long enough to convey meaningful information about the deceased's life and the impact they left behind.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there is no strict standard format for writing an obituary, many follow a general structure: announcement of death, biography of life, list of surviving family members, funeral or memorial service information, and any special messages or requests from the family. This format helps ensure that all the important details are communicated clearly.

Are obituaries only published in newspapers?

No, obituaries can be published in various places including newspapers, online memorial sites, funeral home websites, social media platforms, and in community newsletters. The choice depends on where the family wants to reach the intended audience.

Can I include a photograph in an obituary?

Yes, photographs are often included in obituaries. A picture adds a personal touch and helps readers connect with the person who has passed away. Publications usually have specific requirements for the photo size and quality.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a few days to a week after a person's death. This allows time to inform the community and provides details about any upcoming services. However, the timing can vary depending on the family's wishes and the publication's deadlines.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary?

If you are unable to afford the costs of publishing an obituary in a newspaper, consider free alternatives like social media, community websites, church bulletins, or asking a local newspaper if they offer any concessions for those who can't pay.

How can I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, gather information from reliable sources such as family records and confirm details with close family members. It's also helpful to have someone else review the obituary before submission to catch any errors.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

While it is better to catch errors before publication, many publications allow for corrections or updates to be made. Contact the publication as soon as possible to inquire about their policy regarding amendments after an obituary has been published.

Are there cultural differences in how obituaries are written?

Yes, cultural differences can affect how obituaries are written. Some cultures may emphasize certain aspects of a person's life more than others or follow specific rituals and formats. It is important to be aware of and respect such differences when writing an obituary.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is not necessary and is left to the discretion of the family. While some families choose to include it, others prefer to keep it private. There's no right or wrong choice—it's a personal decision.

Can friends or community members contribute to writing an obituary?

Yes, friends and community members can contribute to writing an obituary. Contributions might include sharing memories, providing information about the deceased's life, or writing a passage. However, the family typically has the final say in what is published.

How do I write a respectful and honouring obituary?

To write a respectful and honoring obituary, focus on celebrating life rather than dwelling on death. Provide a truthful and heartfelt account of the person’s achievements, character, and relationships. Use a tone that reflects how the person lived and how they were regarded by others.

Should I include information about where donations can be made?

If the family prefers donations to flowers or has a specific cause that was important to the deceased, this information can be included in the obituary. Provide clear instructions on where and how to make donations.

An obituary is not a legal document, but it can serve as a public record of someone's death. Legal documents relating to death, such as death certificates, are separate and used for official and administrative purposes.

What should be done if a loved one didn't want an obituary?

If a loved one expresses a wish not to have an obituary published, it is important to respect their wishes. However, consider other ways to commemorate the person, such as a private memorial service, to give friends and family a chance to grieve and remember the deceased.

Is it possible to have an obituary published for someone who died a long time ago?

While most obituaries are published shortly after a person's death, it is possible to publish one for someone who died a long time ago. This is often done on significant anniversaries or if the death was not widely known at the time. Contact a publication to discuss the possibilities.
