Obituary Preview: Wanda Marie Ohaver, 90, of Farmington, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. She was born at home on September 3, 1933, in Aledo, Illinois, to Harlan and Dorothy (Wood) Johnson. She graduated from Aledo High School as the valedictorian of her class. When she was in grade school, she told her girlfriend that she was going to marry Delano Ohaver one day when she saw him in the hallway, and she did on her 20th birthday. They were married 69 years. She and Delano attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. They then moved to Champaign-Urbana for Delano to attend veterinary school at the University of Illinois. During that time, she worked at the music library at the university while attending classes. In 1957, they moved to Farmington. Wanda called herself Delano's "office girl," as she answered the phone and set up appointments for his veterinary practice.
Wanda loved people and relationships. She found much happiness sitting at her kitchen table visiting with family and friends over coffee and her delicious pies. Their door was open to everyone! For many years in the fall, she and Delano had an apple cider stand and a popcorn wagon (made by Delano at her request!) at the Spoon River Scenic Drive. Wanda was a Mary Kay consultant for decades and, once again, loved the social aspect of selling cosmetics. She and Delano owned rental properties in Farmington, and she always enjoyed chatting with the tenants. She loved writing letters, sending cards, and talking on the phone.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Farmington and P.E.O. Chapter AE for over 60 years. Wanda was an avid reader and seamstress. Among the many items she made through the years were prom dresses, Halloween costumes, and doll clothes. She even made her wedding suit for her high school home economics class.
She loved doing daily crossword puzzles with Delano, watching "Gunsmoke" reruns, "Jeopardy!," "Wheel of Fortune," and her favorite movie, Dirty Dancing.
Wanda is survived by two daughters, Mary (David) Moermond of Des Moines, Iowa, and Susan (Dino) Vlahos of Sleepy Hollow, Illinois; two granddaughters, Olivia Vlahos of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Taylor Desmond of Crystal River, Florida; one great-granddaughter, Rilee Jo; one sister, Sandra Powell of Aledo and many nieces and nephews. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or on an online memorial site. It typically includes a brief biography, information about the funeral or memorial services, notable accomplishments, and information about surviving family members.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the deceased person's next of kin. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries before they pass, or a professional writer, such as a journalist or a funeral director, may be hired to craft it.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, either in print or online, as well as on funeral home websites, online obituary databases, and social media platforms.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person's life and death, often including biographical information, family details, and accomplishments. A death notice, in contrast, is a shorter announcement that confirms the death and provides basic details such as the name, age, and date of passing, along with funeral service information.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are usually published within a week of the person's passing, although the exact timing can vary based on publication deadlines, the family's wishes, and the time needed to gather information and write the obituary.

Should all deaths have an obituary?

While not legally required, many families choose to publish an obituary as a way to honor the deceased and inform the community about the passing. However, it is a personal choice, and some families may prefer to keep the matter private.

What information is commonly included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a summary of their life story, details about family members, and information regarding the funeral or memorial service. Some may also include a cause of death and information about donations to charities in lieu of flowers.

Can I add a photo to an obituary?

Yes, photos are often included with obituaries, especially when published online. A photo can provide a visual reminder of the person for those who knew them and allows readers to connect with the obituary on a more personal level.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the length of the obituary and the publication in which it is placed. Costs for newspaper obituaries are typically based on the number of lines or the amount of space the obituary occupies. Online postings can sometimes be free or have a fixed fee.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary. It can range from a few sentences to several hundred words. The length often depends on the amount of information the family wishes to include and the cost implications of the publication's pricing structure.

How do I begin writing an obituary?

To begin writing an obituary, start with the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, and the date and place of death. Follow this with a summary of their life, including important milestones, relationships, and contributions. Wrap up with details of the funeral services and any special messages from the family.

Can an obituary be updated after it is published?

Once an obituary is printed in a paper, it cannot be changed, but online obituaries can often be updated or edited if necessary. Contact the website or funeral home in charge of the online obituary to request changes.

What should I do if I find a mistake in an obituary?

If you find a mistake in an obituary, contact the publication or website where it appears as soon as possible to request a correction, particularly if the information regards service details or surviving family members.

Can obituaries be published for pets?

Yes, some publications and websites allow obituaries for pets. Many pet owners find comfort in publicly honoring the life of their beloved animal companions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the newspaper's obituary department for submission guidelines, which can include formatting requirements, deadlines, and costs. Prepare the text according to the guidelines and submit it along with any requested photos.

What is the etiquette for writing someone's obituary?

The etiquette for writing obituaries includes being truthful yet respectful, focusing on significant life achievements, and being sensitive to the feelings of the deceased's family and friends. Strive to celebrate the person's life and legacy, and provide closure for the community.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To make an obituary more personal, include anecdotes, personal stories, or favored quotes of the deceased. Share details about hobbies, passions, or the impact they had on others. This personalized touch can resonate with those who knew the individual and provide a richer picture of their life.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is not necessary and is at the discretion of the family. Some families may choose to include this information to avoid speculation or to raise awareness about an illness or cause, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Can a family request donations instead of flowers?

Yes, it is common for families to request that memorial donations be made to specific charities or causes in lieu of flowers. This request can be included in the obituary along with details about how to make the donation.

What should I do if I want to express my condolences?

To express your condolences, you can reach out to the family directly, attend the funeral or memorial services if open to the public, send condolence cards, flowers, or make a donation to a specified charity if requested. Additionally, many online obituaries have a guestbook or comment section where you can leave a message of sympathy.

Due to the widespread use of the internet and social media, online obituaries are gaining popularity. They can be more easily disseminated, accessed by a broader audience, and often have no space limitations like traditional newspaper obituaries. Online obituaries also offer interactive features such as guestbooks and photo galleries.
