THOMAS CARTWRIGHT - March 13, 1946 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: THOMAS CARTWRIGHT (affectionately known as Tom, Tommy, or TC) was born in San Diego, California on March 13, 1946 to Thomas Henry and Ella Ruth Cartwright. He was the fourth and last born to this couple. Tom was preceded in death by his parents. When his mother married George Robinson, he was blessed with eight additional siblings.
Tom attended Central Elementary School, Wilson Jr. High School, and Herbert Hoover High School. In 1964, he graduated from San Diego High School.  While in school, Tom participated on the track and wrestling teams but admits he never reached his full potential in either sport because he did not enjoy practicing.
After high school, Tom worked at a spa in a private club and in construction. In 1974, a car accident left him with a back injury. He then went to vocational school to train in the hospitality industry. He began his hotel career in 1976 with the Hilton Corporation and remained with Hilton for five years working in management as a Front Office Manager and Director of Sales. He later joined the Great Pacific Hotels where he excelled in the positions of General Manager and Director of Operations. During one period in this industry, he was responsible for seven properties.
In 1992 Tom was recruited by Councilman George Stevens to help redirect the Project Employment Program (PEP), a hospitality training program that recruited, trained, and helped place individuals from “hard to serve” communities in the hotel industry. Tom also returned to school where he received this teaching certificate and was often called upon to teach Hotel/Motel Management classes at Grossmont College.
In 1994, he was hired by Yellow Cab of San Diego to establish and be the General Manager of Premier Ride, an executive transportation car service. In a short period, under Tom’s management, Premier Ride grew from four sedans to a fleet of four limos, four shuttle vans, and fifteen sedans. Premier was the preferred executive car service for a number of corporations in San Diego including Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, as well the preferred sedan service for some of the top hotels in the area including the L’Auberge Del Mar Resort and the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.
In 2004, Tom formed TCA (Tom Cartwright Association) Transportation Management as a result of receiving a request from Bishop Roy Dixon (Faith Chapel Church of God in Christ) to coordinate the transportation for their Auxiliary in Ministry (AIM) convention which was being held in Detroit that year. Tom provided that service for AIM and several other local groups for years, and when AIM decided to manage their convention transportation in-house, Tom returned to hotel management.
For over 20 years, Tom helped to build and strengthen the San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP) by serving as a leader in his local church organizing committee, serving on the Board of SDOP for more than a decade, serving on the executive committee of the Board multiple years, and co-chairing the Board for three terms. Tom had a particular interest in economic development and the creation of good jobs for young people. He was active in the Learn and Earn Program and was a key SDOP negotiator in the largest private Community Benefits Agreement in the country on the Ballpark Village Project which resulted in hundreds of local jobs and over $20 million dollars in affordable housing. Tom was a proud leader in San Diego, dedicated to passing California’s Proposition 47. He was dedicated to the liberation of young people and passionate about ending unjust policies that work to keep people of color behind bars. During his time in SDOP, he must have made over 10,000 phone calls across the county and state encouraging people to get out and vote!
Tom was active in many other campaigns on healthcare, affordable housing, education reform, voting, and state and national issues. However, his enduring gift was to always be there supporting other leaders and getting new people involved in organizing so that they could make a positive impact on society.
In 2007 Tom joined Trigild, a well-known property management company, and was assigned to manage the Armed Services Building in Downtown San Diego which included the YMCA, Grand Central Restaurant, and the 500 West Hotel, a 259-room hotel in which he was the General Manager until 2014. Tom retired in 2015, but since he couldn’t sit still, he took a job at The Home Depot where in true fashion, he ended up making many new friends. A person would walk in to buy a wrench and end up spending thirty minutes hanging out with their new friend, Tom.
Tom was a dedicated usher and deacon at Faith Chapel Church of God in Christ (under the leadership of Bishop Roy Dixon), which is now City of Hope International Church (COHI) under the leadership of Bishop Terrell Fletcher. While ushering, Tom met and befriended Brenda Tolbert; however, it was not until a year and a half later (2011) that the two were joined in holy matrimony. Tom and Brenda were the “quintessential couple,” a true example of what “God has put together.” From this union, they both received bonus daughters and grandchildren. Until his illness, the couple had a zest for life: traveling, spending quiet time together at home, and working together in ministry. They continued to usher at City of Hope International Church where Brenda could always look to her left and see him standing.
Tom was preceded in death by siblings Laverne Cartwright Swain, Henry Eugene Cartwright, Donald Ray Cartwright, Charles Kirby “Chuckie” Robinson, Lola Maurine Robinson, and Harvey Raymond “Zakee” Robinson.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda; his daughter Shondel Cartwright; grandson, Dennis Cartwright (fiancée Amanda); great-granddaughters: Angelina and Alejandra; bonus daughter, Teanna Diggs (Corey); granddaughters: Aria, Ava, Avery, and Aurora; his brothers: David Robinson and Oscar J. Robinson (Alejandra); sisters: Wanda Swainson (John, deceased), Michelle Holloway (Robert), Dorothy Stonewall (Dale), and a host of marvelous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

BRIGHAM ZALE ANTHONY - October 24, 1960 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Brigham Zale Anthony was born October 24, 1960, in San Diego, California to Bennie Anthony and Mary Lee Anthony. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Bayview Baptist Church. He was the youngest of three boys and quickly became a Momma’s boy. He loved his brothers Tony and Craig and would never miss a moment of spending time with them. They spent countless days adventuring around Southeast San Diego, leaving bike tracks on each hidden path they explored together. They also enjoyed hunting in the canyons of National City and fishing almost every day at the Imperial Beach Pier. It goes without saying that Brigham could be found anywhere and everywhere but was never seen without his best friend Jose by his side, a true bonus brother for life.
He attended Boone Elementary School, Bell Junior High School, and Morse High School. It was at Morse where he alone built a go-cart from a lawnmower engine in his auto shop class that took 1st place at the San Diego County Fair. While others wanted to be popular, Brigham wanted to be innovative. He played the saxophone in his high school band and sang in the church choir. He listened to all genres of music, loved his boom box, and was notoriously known for saying “whatever”. Since graduating from Morse, he has simply been remembered as that “cool” and “stand-up” guy.
He went to San Diego Mesa College to become a mechanical engineer, focusing on architecture but chose a different career path to work in the family business, Anthony’s Auto Shopper and Repairs. Brigham got married at a young age to Jennifer Deadwiler and from that union was blessed with two children: Abrie Zale Anthony and Sylvia Jasmine Anthony. He later remarried Anita (Higuera) Anthony in 2003 on Cinco de Mayo. From this union, he was blessed with his son Isaac Zale Anthony and two bonus children: Richard Williams and Adrianna Williams.
Throughout his life, he continued with his passion for working on vehicles all around San Diego and even built a few himself. We all know how much he loved trucks, so it’s not surprising that he also traveled around the U.S. driving semi-trucks. This was his best form of traveling other than on his motorcycles.
It was obvious that Brigham loved two things from an early age: animals and mechanics. While he had many dogs, his favorite dog was named Bobo, and he was always fascinated by mechanical hobbies such as radio-controlled cars, planes, and glider boats. He was always good with his hands and never missed an opportunity to use them, especially when it came to sketching, building, and photography. Brigham always had a love for nature and an adventurous spirit. He was always known for riding his ATVs on desert dunes and taking the brave for rides on his motorcycles. He was playful and never missed a moment to make someone laugh. Many people can attest to one of his well-known pranks involving an infamous gorilla suit, and oh my, did he love to scare people with it. He loved his family and friends, and was very connected to anyone’s family he could reach. He would make himself at home wherever he was and gladly eat a homecooked meal with dessert if you even hinted at the offer. God knows he had a sweet tooth!
Brigham was always known for his talent in the automotive field and began tinkering with cars before he was old enough to drive a car. When anyone had a problem with their cars, they would call Brigham and he wouldn’t hesitate to be there for them. He was kind, giving, and selfless, especially when it came to his time and talent, and would gladly give both if he could use them to help others, no matter the day or time. Brigham was just that type of man.
On the morning of Tuesday, April 5, 2022, Brigham Anthony, 61, was called home to be with the Lord, passing away peacefully in his home in San Diego, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bennie Anthony, Mary Lee Anthony, and his older brother Craig Anthony.
Brigham Zale Anthony is survived by his wife, Anita Anthony; son and daughter-in-law, Abrie and Antoinette Anthony; daughters, Sylvia Anthony and Adrianna Williams; sons, Isaac Anthony and Richard Williams; grandchildren, Maliyah Anthony, Amiyah Anthony, Abrie Anthony Jr., Adriana Sloan, Aiyanna Sloan, and Kevin Willis-Sloan; his eldest brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Linda Anthony, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is deeply loved and cherished by them all.

HARLAN JARARD MCLEMORE-EDISON - June 14, 1982 - March 30, 2022

Departed: 03/30/2022 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Harlan Jarard McLemore-Edison was born On June 14, 1982, Harlan was born in San Diego, CA at Sharp Memorial Hospital to Zandra Meshack-Edison and U.S. Navy Veteran Phillip Wyman McLemore (who preceded Harlan in death). Harlan was his mother’s first-born child. He was raised in San Diego, CA by his mother and Dad/stepfather U.S. Navy Retired Tracy Jay Edison SR. Harlan was baptized at the age of three at St. Paul United Methodist Church by Reverend Green. His Godparents are Kimberly Ann Harris-Mundy, affectionately known as (Kimmie), and Danny Whitehead. Harlan began his long-successful athletic career at the age of five. His Dad/stepfather was adamant about being his first coach, so at just five-years-old he began playing flag football for the Murphy Canyon football league. Harlan was a natural in sports. He continued to play football, basketball and baseball until his health failed him in 2003. He played tee-ball, basketball, and football - specifically - until he reached his high school years. Notably, he was a stand-out football player for Pop Warner football for Kearny Mesa Pop Warner and South Bay Pop Warner. Harlan was a triathlete during his high school years at Monte Vista High School from 1996-2000, excelling in football, track, and basketball. While playing football for Monte Vista High School, he was voted Best Defensive Player and East County Defensive Player of the Year 1999. He also received the CIF Finalist Grossmont South League Champions “Big Stick” Award in 1999. But amongst those achievements, there were many others just as notable. After leaving Monte Vista High School, Harlan played football for Grossmont Community College briefly from 2000-2001. He then went on to play for a local San Diego Semi-Pro football team before his kidneys failed in 2004, and he was placed on kidney dialysis. As God’s grace and mercy would have it, although Harlan was not able to play football, he, his Dad/Stepfather Tracy Jay Edison Sr., and his only blood related brother Tracy Jay Edison Jr. served the community of San Diego, as coaches for the opening year of Eastlake Pop Warner. Harlan continued his college studies through Grossmont College and Southwestern College, focusing on Real Estate and Culinary Arts. Harlan was a successful Cannabis Dispensary owner/operator, and he delved in many other entrepreneurial ventures. On January 15, 2015, thanks to a living angel, and the Queen, and partner of Harlan’s life for many years, Camille Hernandez, Harlan received a kidney transplant, which added six and a half years to his life. Camille and Harlan were involved in the largest nationwide kidney donor swap (32 people) to date. Despite Harlan’s medical challenges from 2000-2015, he never missed a beat. Many people were not aware Harlan was dealing with renal failure, before, during or after his successful kidney transplant. Harlan’s successful 2015 kidney transplant failed in mid-2021. Harlan was immediately placed on kidney dialysis once again, and once again, he never complained. Harlan gave so much to so many. He led with love, dignity, and respect. Being genuine and respectable is what Harlan was, and will always be known for, by his family, his friends, and his friends’ parents. Harlan navigated through life, attempting to live his life to the fullest for his daughters, his family, the community, and his friends. He succeeded. On March 7, 2022, while driving down the freeway on a return trip from Disneyland, CA, (His only biologically related daughter’s 2nd Birthday, and the 2nd celebration in two consecutive days for her) Harlan turned to his mother riding next to him and said “Mom, did you know I’ve accomplished everything in my life I have ever wanted to accomplish? …or I at least tried?”. Harlan was and will forever be a treasure to all who knew him. Throughout his life, his love of European/Foreign cars and the finer things in life, and above all those things, the love he had for his daughters, sustained him through pain and setbacks - despite the churning tides of life. Harlan always kept his head up and kept a smile on his face. His genuine care and concern, his unconditional love, his absolutely smile, and his infectious laughter will be greatly missed. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and shared one-liners, tall-tales, and true stories with those who took the time to listen. Harlan lived like he loved: HARD. Harlan is survived by his beloved daughter Wynter Dior Edison, beloved bonus daughter Karma Lily Lockett, his mother Zandra Meshack-Edison, his Dad/Stepfather Tracy Jay Edison, Sr., his brother Tracy Jay Edison Jr., his sister Ti’Ana Jaynee’ Edison, two nephews Deante Mahome JohnsonEdison and Jayvion Juaquin Edison Robinson. As a kid, when his parents instructed the kids to pick out what they wanted for Christmas in the Sears catalogue, he would circle ladies’ underwear and baby dolls and put his brother’s name next to it. Even in his final years, he enjoyed pranking the neighbors and had fun with a mannequin he named Cat. He struggled at times with his mental health issues, substance abuse and in his earlier years, with the law. This was often, too much of a strain for many around him. He did not understand that often loved ones needed boundaries at times to preserve their mental health, but in later years, learned this when he had to do so with his own daughter. Bill had lots of support from all of his families and AA was a huge part of his life off and on for many years. Bill was very extreme in all that he did. He loved hard, and lost hard. It is difficult to find anyone as hard working, but he did that so that he could enjoy playing. Bill also knew the best ways to get out of work and loved to talk about delivering the elderly neighbors mail in snowstorms as a teen. He knew they would talk to him for a long time and that he would get out of his real work at the family business. He was always very lucky and would hit big on the first machine every time he walked into a casino. But Bill also had difficulties sometimes with basic things. With the help and support of many around him, he was so proud to call and tell his Mom when he finally had a driver’s license in his forties. Sadly, it didn’t last long, but he was well practiced in getting around with biking and public transportation. Sadly, as the pandemic hit, his difficulties with his mobility and trying to avoid taking public transportation isolated him more. Bill worked in many different jobs, but primarily in landscaping. Bill loved the outdoors and working with his hands. He loved shoveling snow, but not as much as worshiping the sun. He lived in Florida for a short time, but returned to New Jersey. He also lived in Delaware and Rhode Island as a child. He traveled via train to visit his sister in Colorado and enjoyed the trip so much, he continued onto

EVELYN CECILE SHEPARD - July 10, 1948 - March 04, 2022

Departed: 03/04/2022 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. I say, It’s in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me.
I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can’t touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them They say they still can’t see. I say, It’s in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me.
Now you understand Just why my head’s not bowed. I don’t shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing It ought to make you proud. I say, It’s in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, The need of my care, ‘Cause I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. - Maya Angelou
