Robert John King - September 12, 1950 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 ( Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Robert John King, known to all as Bob or BK, passed away peacefully early on April 19. It was the end of a battle with esophageal cancer.
Bob was a big guy, with a large presence and a generous spirit. He was born September 12, 1950, in Aurora, but grew up in Bloomington as the fifth of nine siblings in a boisterous, loving family. Bob attended local Catholic schools and Illinois State University, where he assembled an enthusiastic group of friends who enjoyed their time together, perhaps to excess.
Bob had a great, distinctive voice and when he moved to Chicago after school he worked first as a disc jockey on WMAQ and then as a DJ and program director for Q101-FM. He also worked on various commercial films and voiceovers.
Bob really established himself as a bartender. His personality fit the job and his interactions across the bar led to many friends, including a wife. Bob worked at several popular bars, especially Hillary’s in the Water Tower Place when it was opened by the Levy family. Bob moved within the Levy organization to become beverage manager, helping to open places as diverse as large sports arenas and high-end restaurants. Bob was a popular visitor to brewers, distillers, vineyard and his annual favorite Aspen Food and Wine festival.
Bob was funny. He told a good joke, sometimes self-deprecating and often devastating. His banter as a scorekeeper of various contests is legendary among friends and family. He shared a birthday with his son Spencer and often arranged elaborate pranks to celebrate, including once getting a Rolls Royce and a case of Grey Poupon mustard so that Spencer could hand out jars to unsuspecting drivers, in a perfect restaging of a popular TV advertisement.
Bob was an avid gamer. A skilled card player and dice enthusiast, he cherished annual trips to Las Vegas with his brothers and nephews.
Bob was an inveterate reader. A friend to libraries, he was often found with a book. He was happy to discuss books and authors and to recommend selections. His favorite, over the years, remained “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
Bob was a cyclist. After moving to Chicago, he organized a group of weekend riders called the Rogers Park Irregulars that entertained many friends. He participated in numerous long distance charity rides and popular RAGBRAI.
Bob was generous. His gifts, including his own elaborate wrapping, were highly anticipated. He gave blood regularly; every two months, until failing health prevented continuing.
Bob was a hero. In the summer of 1979, coming home late from work, Bob interrupted a villain’s attack on an elderly couple, subduing the attacker, alerting the authorities and protecting the victims. The City of Chicago awarded Bob its highest civilian honor.
Bob was gracious and graceful in his final illness. He worried most about the burden he was being on others.
Bob is survived by his son Spencer, of Sarasota, FL, and his wife Leigh and daughter Claire, and his daughter Madeleine of Chicago. Bob’s marriage to Melissa Oosterbaan ended in divorce. Bob also is survived by his sisters Carole Bunte of Oak Brook Terrace, Rose Costello of St. Paul, MN and Dorothy King and her husband John Protasiewicz of Cleveland Heights, OH, his brothers Daniel King and his wife Karen of Atlanta, GA, and Stephen and his wife Christy of Wilmette, and sister in laws Margaret King of Chicago and Dobie Edmunds of Cloverdale, CA, as well as a score of beloved nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Carol, his sister Margaret and his brothers Michael and Thomas.
Simply, Bob will be missed. His remains will be interred in a family plot in a private service. In Bob’s memory, do something nice for another.

Raymond O. Noesen - February 10, 1961 - March 31, 2024

Departed: 03/31/2024 ( Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Raymond O. Noesen (master artist & craftsman, award-winning painter & historical architectural preservationist) lost his battle with liver cancer the morning of March 31, 2024. He is survived by his beloved husbands Dr. Douglas Bell & Jeffery Moore; his sisters, Judi Lauria, Mary Lay, and Laura Kuchta; his brothers, Steve, Mark, Tom, John, and Scott
Noesen; and step-siblings, Scott and Kirk Oliver and Kirsten Pagacz. Ray was a multi-talented artist hailing from Chicago (raised in Oak Park), who left an indelible mark on the world of art and restoration. He received both his BFA (Painting) and MFA (Historic Architectural Preservation) from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago. For many years Ray served as a lead artist for Conrad Schmitt Studio in New Berlin, Wisconsin, and traveled across the country, meticulously investigating, documenting, and restoring the artwork of
historic buildings—ranging from majestic churches to state capitols and grand theaters. Ray’s skilled investigations revealed original designs, historically accurate color palettes and previously undiscovered murals. He recreated stencils, breathed life into faded murals (such as the Chicago Theater’s iron curtain), and restored intricate ornamental designs. His dedication to preserving cultural heritage was unwavering, and his artistic sensibility infused every stroke of his brush. The beauty he brought to the places he worked brings joy to countless thousands, creating magical spaces for worship, art, ritual celebration, and community. On multiple occasions, church parishioners
were brought to tears by the beauty of his artwork and they insisted on thanking him personally. In retirement, Ray returned to his passion of working in oil pastels, with which he became a consummate innovator. He travelled through this world with an artist’s eye. Weekly walks to the lake, nature hikes, and travels to State / National Parks as well as international destinations, such as Italy and Mexico, were source material for his unique artistic vision – even his visits to “junk” shops inspired a number of paintings. On the cusp of branching out into textile/fabrics, Ray also designed umbrellas using aquatic and floral patterns he originally created in oil pastel. Additionally, Ray was an active
member in the West Ridge Artist Group and was an on-line art instructor/mentor for a young artist living in England. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ray was a generous, warm and compassionate soul. His volunteer work included cooking and delivering lasagnas with Jeffery through the “Lasagna Love” program and volunteering as a docent
at the Garfield Park Conservatory.
Ray was unabashedly unique; he was loving, kind, creative and always brought joy, light and sparkle to every occasion. Ray’s spirit and artistry were reflected in his annual Christmas paintings and greeting cards. The home/life that he built with Doug & Jeffery was a unique and enduring testament to the power of love for 35 years - an emblem of the “road less travelled.” The warmth and hospitality that the three of them put into making every Christmas unique and special was “Epic.” Raymond O. Noesen’s legacy extends beyond the canvas. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of everyone who knew him and in the artistic community. His memory will forever bring happiness to the hearts of those of us who had the privilege of knowing him personally. His work will continue to inspire his patrons as well as fellow artists and
preservations, and it will continue to inspire awe in all of those who visit his buildings. A celebration of Ray’s life will be held Thursday, May 23, 2024, 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM at the Cliff Dwellers, 200 S Michigan

No, an obituary is not legally required. It is a tradition that serves to inform the community and commemorate the deceased but is not a formal legal document like a death certificate.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

While obituaries are longer and detail the life of the deceased, death notices are typically shorter and simply provide the bare facts such as the name, age, and information about the funeral services. Death notices are often placed in newspapers by the family through a funeral home and may require a fee.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

Local newspapers may have fees based on length, while major metropolitan papers can charge significantly more. Some online sites offer free posting options. It's best to consult with the specific publication for their rates.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

What should I do if I find a factual error in an obituary?

If there is a factual error in an obituary, you should contact the publication or the website host as soon as possible to correct the information. It’s important to address any misinformation promptly, especially concerning details about funeral arrangements.

Is it appropriate to mention a cause of death in an obituary?

Can friends or community members contribute to writing an obituary?

Yes, friends and community members can contribute to writing an obituary, especially if they were close to the deceased and wish to share anecdotes or meaningful memories. Collaborating can result in a more comprehensive and heartfelt tribute.

Should an obituary include information about memorial donations?

If the family has chosen to suggest donations to a chosen charity or cause in lieu of flowers, this information can be included in an obituary. Providing the name of the charity and any relevant contact information or links for making donations is helpful.

What can be done if a loved one dies without the means to pay for an obituary?

If a loved one dies and there is no budget for an obituary, many communities have free options through online forums, social media, or local newspapers that may publish death notices at reduced or no cost. It's also possible to post a heartfelt tribute on personal social media profiles to inform friends and family.

Is an obituary necessary for a private or family-only funeral?

An obituary can be published even for a private or family-only funeral. It informs the greater community of the person’s passing and allows others to grieve or offer support, even if they are not attending services.
