Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, or funeral directors. Sometimes, they can be drafted by the deceased before their passing, or by journalists when the deceased is a public figure.

What is usually included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, place of residence, and date of passing. It often contains a brief summary of their life, family member details, accomplishments, details of the funeral service or memorial, and directions for donations in lieu of flowers, if applicable.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is typically shorter and more factual, mainly announcing the person's passing and service times. It may not include a biography. An obituary is more detailed, providing life history and personal anecdotes about the deceased.

Are obituaries public domain?

No, obituaries are not public domain, as they are often written by family members or close friends, and permission should be obtained to republish or use them in any capacity beyond personal use or as intended in their original publication context.

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication. Some newspapers may charge by word count, column inch, or offer a flat rate. Online obituaries might be less expensive or sometimes free. Contacting individual publications for their rates is advised.

Do all obituaries have to be published in a newspaper?

No, while newspapers are traditional platforms for obituaries, you also have the option of publishing an obituary online, such as on memorial websites, social media, or through a funeral home’s digital channels. This can often reach a wider audience and allow for more personal expressions of grief.

Can an obituary be changed once it is published?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be altered. However, online obituaries may offer the ability to edit or update information. Always review the obituary thoroughly before submitting it to avoid errors.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary?

If you find an error in an online obituary, contact the website or funeral home to request a correction. If it's in print, it is standard to publish a correction or retraction in the next edition of the newspaper.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary. Some may be brief, at around 200 words, while others might exceed 1,000 words. Consider the platform's guidelines, costs, and the amount of detail desired when determining length.

How do I start writing an obituary?

To start writing an obituary, gather the essential information such as the deceased's full name, age, date of passing, and any services or memorials. Begin with a simple introduction, followed by highlights of the person's life, significant relationships, and any specific wishes for post-funeral practices.

Are there templates or services that can help with writing an obituary?

Yes, many funeral homes and online resources provide templates and guidelines for writing obituaries. Some services also offer personalized assistance or writing services for a fee.

Is it necessary to include cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and not required. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others may share it, especially if it pertains to an illness for which they support fundraising or awareness.

What if I don't want to publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary is not mandatory. It's a personal choice and can be avoided if privacy is a concern or for any other personal reason. Remember that an obituary can serve as a meaningful way to communicate the person's passing to a larger community and honor their life.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Generally, an obituary should be published as soon as possible after death, usually within a few days, to ensure timely notification of the funeral or memorial services to friends, acquaintances, and the community.

Can obituaries be written for people who died many years ago?

Yes, retrospective obituaries can be written and published to commemorate the life of a person on significant anniversaries of their passing or to acknowledge their impact posthumously. Online platforms are particularly suited for this.

Is there a respectful way to announce a controversial or difficult cause of death?

For sensitive causes of death, such as suicide or substance abuse, the language can be kept vague ("passed away unexpectedly") or can address the issue sensitively by focusing on the individual's life rather than the circumstances of their death.

Can an obituary be rejected by a newspaper or website?

Newspapers and websites may reject obituaries that do not meet their publication guidelines, including length, content, and appropriateness. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these guidelines before submitting an obituary.

Is it appropriate to add humor to an obituary?

If it reflects the personality of the deceased and is done tastefully, humor can be included in an obituary. However, it's important to consider the sentiments of all readers and to strike a balance between humor and respect.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

Share anecdotes, personal stories, or unique traits of the deceased. Mentioning favorite hobbies, phrases they were known for, or cherished moments can provide a deeply personal touch to an obituary.

Obituaries should respect privacy and avoid sensitive personal information that could be misused. If including details about survivors, ensure that you have their consent, especially in the case of minors.

What should be done with condolences and tributes received?

Condolences and tributes can be saved in a memorial book, shared with family members, or displayed during ceremonies. They are meaningful tokens of remembrance that can offer comfort to the grieving family.
