Taylor Steven Stuart - July 25, 1929 - April 22, 2022

Departed: 04/22/2022 (Shawnee)
Obituary Preview: Taylor Steven Stuart (Steve) was a farm hand, army veteran, telegrapher, electronics technician, community gardener, communications engineer and a strong family man. Friends and co-workers described him as thoughtful, decent, dedicated, honest, admired and respected. All who met him were blessed with his good humor, intellect and wisdom. He will be greatly missed.
Steve was born on July 25, 1929 in Divide County, in northwestern ND to TS and Lyda Stuart. Steve grew up on a farm during the great depression with two older brothers (James Thadeus and Grenville Seely), a younger sister (Cynthia) and a younger brother (Robert Byron). As a teenager, he worked on the family farm during WW2. When he was 18, he completed High School in Crosby, ND, graduated from telegraph school in Minneapolis, MN and moved to Las Vegas, NM where he began a 39-year career with the Santa Fe RR. He also partnered a small chicken farm there until he was drafted in 1951 to serve two years in the US army. He was stationed in Japan.
In 1953, he returned to work as a telegrapher for the Santa Fe in Las Vegas NM where he met Doris Adele Stewart. He and Adele were married April 5, 1954. In addition to his work with the railroad, Steve opened and operated a private television repair business until late 1960, when the railroad moved him to Amarillo, TX to work as a wire chief. Four years later, the Santa Fe moved him again to work as a radio technician in Wellington, KS. Two years later, the Santa Fe moved him to Topeka, KS and gave him responsibilities for installing and maintaining microwave communication systems for a territory that extended from western Missouri through eastern Colorado. As a side project, he purchased 10 acres outside of Topeka where he cultivated walnut and pecan trees.
Steve retired from the Santa Fe in 1987 as a communications engineer in Kansas City, KS. During retirement, Steve enjoyed golfing and billiards with his friends, he produced a large vegetable garden every year and donated his time and energy to church and other charitable organizations. He was an avid reader in both English and Spanish and a student of history. He traveled to Africa and Mexico and enjoyed Royals spring training in Arizona. Steve was always ready to help his kids and grandkids with projects, moves, construction and babysitting.

Surviving are his wife Adele, Shawnee; his son Jeff Stuart (Cynthia), Ajijic Mexico; daughters Diane (John) Gaunt, Overland Park KS; Elizabeth (Lee) Kraus, Scranton KS; and Stephanie Barnhill, Shawnee. Jan Rachelle Gentry - March 09, 1968 - April 18, 2022

Departed: 04/18/2022 (Shawnee)
Obituary Preview: Jan Rachelle Gentry, 54, passed away on April 18, 2022. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, April 25 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 7740 Lackman Road, Lenexa, KS, 66217. A visitation will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m. with a service starting immediately afterwards. The family requests that masks be worn at all times during the visitation and service. A short reception will follow. To view a livestream of the service, please click here.
Jan's family wants to offer the chance for anyone who knew her to have a moment to share a memory or story of Jan during the service. If you would like, you can write down a story and share it yourself during the service, or have the minister share it for you.
Jan was born on March 9, 1968 in Clinton, Missouri. From Clinton her family moved to Rolla, Missouri for six years before moving to Fulton, Missouri where Jan went to high school. In high school she was very active in sports, playing basketball, tennis (#1 singles), cross country and golf. She also played alto saxophone in the band. She played on softball teams during the summer and was on bowling leagues throughout her high school career. In addition to being a gifted athlete, she excelled academically. She was valedictorian and president of her senior class and received a National Merit Scholarship which she used to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia. At MU, she received a Bachelor of Science degree, a Masters degree and a law degree. She also received the distinct award of being tapped into the Mystical Seven. This is an honor bestowed on seven outstanding seniors based on their good deeds, selfless leadership and service to the campus and community. After college, she obtained an internship working with the NCAA in Kansas City. Within weeks, she received a full-time offer as an assistant director in Enforcement. In July of 1999, the NCAA transferred their corporate headquarters to Indianapolis, Indiana and Jan and Tara made the move with them. She continued to work in Enforcement for six years before taking a position as a basketball certification coordinator. In 2016, she was promoted to an Associate Director in Championships. She oversaw Championships in Division III Women’s volleyball, softball and ice hockey. Jan retired in January 2021. She said she didn’t miss the work so much as she missed the people and the relationships she had developed over the years. In July 2021, Jan and Tara moved to Shawnee, Kansas to be closer to both their families.
Jan and Tara met in July of 1997 at a party in Kansas City. Their first date was five days later and they were never apart after that. After finally being allowed to marry, Jan and Tara were married Feb. 14, 2015 after 17 and a half years together.
Jan had many passions but pickleball was her favorite. Since her retirement, she played almost every day, if not multiple times a day. She was a fierce competitor on the court and loved to win, but her demeanor was the same win or lose, always accepting either outcome with a huge smile on her face. More than anything, she enjoyed the friendships that formed from playing this sport. Jan was getting ready to compete in several events at the U.S. Open in Naples, Florida. She had received a gold medal when competing earlier in the year at nationals in Palm Springs, California. Jan loved spending time with family, and this usually involved many board games, cards or ping pong. For enjoyment, she was avid at working puzzles—the more complex, the better.
Jan was preceded in death by her father, Marion E. Gentry, her mother, Patricia R. Gentry, father-in-law, Timothy Bertram and stepmother Mary Lou Gentry. She is survived by her wife, Tara Bertram; brothers Brad Gentry (Sue) and Todd Gentry (Roxanne); sister Dawn Gentry-Waltman (Doug); Mother-in-law, Carol Bertram; sister-in-law, Kim Lytle (Allen); nieces Kristen Franke (Erika), Jamie Gentry, Jaylynn Gentry (Ben), Erica Waltman-Lopez (Alex), Paige Waltman (John) and Maclayn Baumhover (Zach); nephews Steven Franke and Dalton Lytle; grandnephew Wesley; grandniece Wrenley; and long time best friend, Kelly Groddy.

Catherine Lee Bergthold - July 10, 1926 - April 12, 2022

Departed: 04/12/2022 (Shawnee)
Obituary Preview: Catherine L. Bergthold, 95, of Kansas City, MO passed away at her home, April 12, 2022.  She was born, July 10, 1926, at home near Siloam Springs, AR to Ernest Ray and Ida May Couch.  Her husband of 64 years, LeRoy H. Bergthold, parents, and six siblings; Helen, Wilma, Oneita, Ray, William and Betty precede her in death. She is survived by four children: Gary, Janice Kay, Glenn and Galen and their spouses, 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She grew up in the era of transition from horse and buggy, kerosene lights and wood stoves to cars and electricity.  Her family lived on a small farm where she learned the value of hard work helping with many chores such as herding home the milk cows, bringing in wood for the stove, washing and ironing, picking wild berries, chinquapin acorns and persimmons. The complete loss by fire and rebuilding of their family's log and frame home made an indelible memory on her young mind. These were also happy days spent splashing in the creek, climbing trees, playing house under the overhanging branches of a large shrub with her sisters, “babysitting” her younger brothers and sister and visiting her beloved grandparents.
Catherine had a lifelong love of learning and remembered geometry as her favorite class.  After attending a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight and boarding in town in order to complete high school during WWII, she graduated as co-valedictorian.  She earned a BS in Home Economics Education at the University of AR, a Masters and Oklahoma Lifetime Teaching Certificate, OK A&M, and a three year diploma from KC Bible College. Students, from elementary through college, benefited from her many years as a teacher.
During her college years a family moved in across the rural highway from their home. At church they met the family including a young Navy veteran just home from war.   A few days later, on a dare from his brother, LeRoy appeared at the door to “purchase eggs” and ask for a date which Catherine accepted.  That led to a summer of not only correspondence courses but one filled with many times together visiting area scenic spots and talking.  At the end of summer she accepted LeRoy's marriage proposal on the condition that she finish her degree. Two years later they were married.
Catherine grew up in a family with a strong, moral character.  As a child, she and her siblings would sometimes walk two miles to either a Quaker church or Shady Grove School for church.  In grade school she earned an award for memorizing 100 verses which continued to work in her heart.  Although people assumed she was a Christian she knew she wasn't because she had a longing in her heart to know God.  One Sunday, while in college, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit in her heart she accepted God's gift of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ's death, burial and resurrection for her sin.  From then on she continued to learn God's Word and to pray for the salvation of her parents, family and others. Her desire would be that each one reading this would likewise put their trust in Jesus Christ alone.
After few years in Oklahoma and teaching in Nebraska the couple moved to the Kansas City area which was home for the rest of their lives. Four children were born and raised.  Although sometimes feeling inadequate as a mother, she loved and encouraged her children spiritually, academically and tried to always be available to them and their families.  She served the Lord in various capacities at their church and as a teacher at KC Christian School in addition to her role as wife and mother.  One of LeRoy and Catherine's passions was missions which they supported financially as well as with time spent praying for and writing to many who became friends, and served on missionary committees and mission trips.  They celebrated 64 years of marriage before a short illness took LeRoy to Glory in 2012.
Catherine was an accomplished seamstress, cook and vegetable and flower gardener.  She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren, telling them stories of her childhood, riddles, always making sure they had a snack at their visit. They enjoyed her quiet sense of humor as well her interest in their lives and interests.  She was proud of each one's accomplishments and was a good encourager.  Later, as great grandchildren came into the family, even after her debilitating stroke, she would delight in seeing each baby.
By God's grace she was able to spend her last years at home lovingly cared for by family, Gary and Donna, Glenn and Brenda as well as four sweet ladies: Amber P, Karla W, Jacinda B, and Jill R.
A Graveside service will be held April 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Through the Bible, P.O. Box 7100, Pasadena, CA 91109  or online by clicking here.

Rodd L. Graham - May 17, 1965 - April 11, 2022

Departed: 04/11/2022 (Shawnee)
Obituary Preview: Rodd Leslie Graham was born on May 17, 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska to Todd and Ginger Graham.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn (Kastel) Graham.   Rodd is survived by his three children, Rachel, Rebecca, and Ryan, his parents, his three siblings, Russell, Randy, and Rebecca and their spouses.
Rodd was a bright, talented child.  He grew up in Omaha and Elkhorn, Nebraska, attending First Covenant Church.  During his elementary school years, Rodd’s fiercely curious nature drove him to grab volumes of the encyclopedia for bedtime reading.  He planned to read them all, and he may have done it.  When Rodd was not helping his father build homes either for others or for the family, he also learned about technology, where an avid interest in computers was born.  Graduating from Elkhorn High School in 1983, he further pursued an expertise in technology with college classes until he was ready to start his own business.
A young man of many interests, Rodd loved camping.  As boys, he and his brother, Russell, spent time in the summer at Eagle Lake Camp near Colorado Springs.  There, not only did Rodd’s love for the outdoors sprout, but the camp also helped him grow in faith.  In fact, Rodd enjoyed these times so much that, when he had children of his own, Rodd made sure Rebecca and Ryan had the benefit of spending summers there too.  Rodd took his family on many camping trips to Colorado, especially to Mueller State Park, one of his favorite destinations.
After moving to Kansas City, Rodd met Lynn Kastel.  They fell in love and were married on November 25, 1995.  Shortly after, Rodd and Lynn purchased their home and acreage in Edwardsville.  All three of their children grew up in that home, and Rodd and Lynn hosted countless visits with friends and family there.
An extraordinarily powerful faith in Christ drove Rodd’s life. Rodd remained a man for Christ throughout his life, sharing his love of God with his wife and children.

Thurman L. Duncan - December 15, 1937 - April 10, 2022

Departed: 04/10/2022 (Shawnee)
Obituary Preview: Thurman L. Duncan passed away at the age of 84, at his home, April 10, 2022. He leaves behind his wife, Lois of 65 years, Olathe, KS.
Their three children: Daughters, Paula (Terry) Rhodes, Olathe, KS, Vickie (Bobby) Boroughf, Berthoud, CO., and Son, Russ (Jenny) Duncan, Orrick, MO.
His seven grandchildren: Seth Rhodes, Stephanie (Brad) King, Zach (Ashley) Boroughf, Emily (Nick) Pflipsen, Nick Duncan, Whitney Duncan and Sophie Duncan. And two bonus grandchildren: Macey and Jax Miller. And five great-grandsons: Bentley, Sawyer and Bowen King AND Oakley and Landry Boroughf.
His remaining siblings, Shirley Wood, Harold Duncan, Norman Duncan, Karren Wood, Billy Joe Duncan and Kathy VanHooser. As well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded by his parents, Clyde and Opal (Luttrell) Duncan, brothers John David, Ronnie and Dickie Duncan .
Thurman was born December 15, 1937 in Brumley, Missouri. He grew up in Miller County during his youth and it wasn't until he met and married, Lois Jones, August 11, 1956 that he left the area. At which point he and Lois moved to the Kansas City area for a job he had. They lived most of their married life in Johnson County, Kansas where they raised their three children, Paula, Vickie and Russell.
He worked construction his entire life doing various things till he started his own company. He did everything from being a hod-carrier to a laborer on a pipeline. Eventually he was given the opportunity to run heavy equipment and found that he enjoyed that the most. With his former boss as his business partner, they started Duncan Excavating in the midseventies. This grew and as things changed it led him to go completely on his own and he began R. L. Duncan Construction Company in 1985. He actively ran the company with the help of his son, Russ, until the business closed in 2020. Thurman loved to work. It gave him a great sense of pride and satisfaction knowing that he had completed numerous projects within the Kansas City and even in the outlying regions. It's what he loved.
His hobbies were few, since working was what he enjoyed most, but there were a few other things he enjoyed too. He loved tinkering with and restoring John Deere tractors. He worked on and helped restore well over ten tractors with the help of his friends, who dubbed themselves the John Deere South gang. Taking the tractors to parades, whether it was rain or shine, was a great way to show off their handiwork, but also share with folks who had never been around the old three cylinder tractors, with the distinct Pop-Pop-Pop sound. He loved talking about the work that was put into them. But his pride and joy was a 1937 model he restored, because it was the same year he was born.
He also loved to garden, even though his family tried to tell him that 20-30 tomato plants was a little overboard. He still grew them and various vegetables each year and would give away the excess bounty to family and friends. He just enjoyed sharing what he had with others.
Mowing was another favorite past time. He would say when he mowed it was relaxing. He would just put his headphones on and mow for hours on end, only to start all over a few days later. Didn't matter to him at all.
Thurman was a man who came from humble beginnings. He was not pretentious in any way and was quick to say that God had truly blessed him. He was able to achieve the American Dream through determination, hard work and a quiet faith in God. He loved the work he did and as the saying goes, "If you love what you do and do what you love, you'll never work a day in your Life." That was Thurman through and through. Although his family and friends will miss him dearly, they know that when he arrived at Heaven's gate, he was greeted with "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 15, 2022 at Fellowship Church of Olathe,  followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., also at the church. Thurman will be laid to rest in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens in Shawnee, Kansas.
