Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a public announcement, typically published in newspapers and on online platforms, that reports the death of an individual. It includes a brief summary of their life, information about funeral or memorial services, and often a note of appreciation of the person's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed remembrance that highlights the life and legacy of the deceased, while a death notice is a simple, to-the-point statement about the individual’s passing, usually with details about the funeral service or memorial. Death notices are often shorter and fact-based, while obituaries are longer and more personalized.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members or friends of the deceased, though in some cases they may be written by funeral directors or professional writers employed by newspapers.

Where is an obituary published?

Obituaries can be published in local or national newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated online obituary platforms.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

The publication timing of an obituary can vary, but it is usually within a week after the death to allow for funeral arrangements to be announced.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased’s full name, age at death, place of residence, names of survivors, details about the time and cause of death (if desired), and information about the funeral service or memorial, as well as a summary of the person's life, achievements, and character.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and not necessary. Some choose to include it for transparency or to raise awareness around certain health issues, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries as a way to ensure their life is remembered as they wish and to alleviate the burden on family members after their passing.

How much does it generally cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication, length, and region. Some newspapers charge by word or column inch, while online platforms may have flat rates or offer free postings.

Are there any guidelines to follow when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, it’s advisable to be respectful and factual, occasionally adding personal touches or anecdotes. It’s also important to consider the privacy of those mentioned and the wishes of the deceased if known.

Can an obituary be edited after it's been published?

In print, once an obituary has been published, it cannot be edited. Online obituaries may offer more flexibility, but revisions may depend on the publication's policy or the online platform's capability.

Are obituaries reviewed or fact-checked before publication?

Most newspapers and some online platforms have staff that review and fact-check obituaries before they are published to ensure appropriateness and accuracy. However, the level of scrutiny may vary.

How can I personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include specific details about the individual’s life such as their hobbies, passions, and the impact they had on others. Quotes from the individual or others, as well as meaningful anecdotes, can also add a personal touch.

Is it possible to include photographs with an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include photographs with an obituary, especially when publishing online or in newspapers that offer the option. A photograph can provide a visual remembrance of the loved one.

What is the process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper?

The process typically includes writing the obituary according to the publication’s guidelines, submitting it either online, by email, or by fax, and then paying any necessary fees. It’s important to check with the individual newspaper for specific details.

Do obituaries need to be approved by a family member or next of kin?

While not a legal requirement, it is generally recommended that obituaries be approved by a family member or next of kin to ensure that the information is accurate and that the content is appropriate.

Should children and grandchildren be mentioned by name in an obituary?

It is common to mention immediate family members, including children and grandchildren, by name; however, this is a personal choice and also depends on privacy concerns and space limitations.

Can I ask for donations to a charity in lieu of flowers?

Yes, it’s common to request charitable donations instead of flowers. The obituary can specify the name and address of the charity or include a link if it is published online.

What cultural considerations should be taken into account in an obituary?

Cultural considerations may include religious beliefs, traditional customs regarding death announcements, and sensitivity to how achievements and life milestones are presented. It's important to honor the cultural traditions and preferences of the deceased and their family.

Is it important to proofread an obituary?

Absolutely. Proofreading an obituary is crucial to correct any typos, ensure accuracy of the information, and to check that it conveys the intended message and tone appropriately.

What should be done if a family member disagrees with the content of an obituary?

Should there be a disagreement, it is best to discuss the matter openly with the concerned family members to reach a consensus, keeping in mind the wishes of the deceased and the feelings of all affected parties.

How can we ensure the obituary reaches the intended audience?

Ensuring an obituary reaches the intended audience can be done by sharing it with family, friends, and community groups, posting it in local and national newspapers, and using online social platforms and obituary sites to disseminate the information.
