Jessica Ann Gardner - November 23, 1984 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Rockledge)
Obituary Preview: With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of Jessica Gardner, who left us far too soon at the age of 39. She departed from us on March 23, 2024, to join many loved ones in heaven.
Born on November 23, 1984, Jessica lived a life filled with simple pleasures and deep connections. She had a green thumb that could bring even the most sickly plants back to life, finding joy in nurturing life and watching her garden bloom with beauty.
One of her greatest joys was spending time with her niece, Zoe, sharing laughter-filled moments and creative adventures. Whether they were coloring together or Zoe was opening the latest gift Jessica found her, they had fun together.
Jessica found fulfillment in her work as a waitress, where she poured her heart into taking care of her customers. Her warm smile and caring nature made everyone feel welcome and loved.
Her passing has left a void in our lives, but we find comfort in the memories we shared with her. Jessica will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her spirit will live on in the love she shared with us all.
Jessica is pre-deceased by her late father, R. David Gardner, and survived by her Mother, Cheryl Gardner, sister, Christa Lechtner, brother-in-law Sam Lechtner, and niece, Zoe Lechtner. She is also survived by many loving cousins, aunts, uncles, and other family, as well as a community of friends and acquaintances who were touched by her kindness.
As we remember her, let's cherish the moments we had with Jessica and carry forward the love and joy she brought into our lives.
Rest easy, dear Jessica, surrounded by the beauty of the gardens you tended and the love that you inspired.

Robert "Bob" Fred Lindsey - February 08, 1950 - March 05, 2024

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Rockledge)
Obituary Preview: “There is a road, no simple highway between the dawn and the dark of night”, Ripple, Grateful Dead
Robert “Bob” Fred Lindsey, 74 of Viera, FL passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024.
Bob never met a stranger. He possessed an extraordinary sense of humor combined with an uncanny ability to deliver a story. He enthusiastically engaged a wide range of people from Wall Street bankers on the East Side of Manhattan to gun runners in the hills of Kentucky. Having exercised the toughness and discipline required to play football and a brief career in Law Enforcement he was nonetheless a genuine free spirit in his welcoming and nonjudgmental approach to people. Being an acknowledged Deadhead was consistent with his sense of tolerance and kindness. Bob was a bona fide Southern Gentleman.
Aside from his remarkable people skills Bob held diverse and varied employment throughout his career demanding an agile intellect and advanced organizational abilities. He worked in warehouse management, sales, construction supervision including different arenas and different players.
An avid reader, Bob was a student of the history and development of military hardware, specifically Aviation. Residing most recently in Florida near the space coast provided a rewarding vantage point to follow the US Space Program. It should not go without mentioning his considerable enjoyment and skill in woodworking. Bob traveled extensively across the US for work and pleasure with his wife Chris. They also traveled internationally to Greece, Mexico, Cuba and Spain where they drank wine in caves in the hills of Grenada and Flamenco danced on tabletops with Gypsies. They travelled together through Central and South America including riding on the zipline above the jungle. Bob never shied away from any restaurant, his favorites including Hot dogs and Pizza and never forget his all-time favorite Makers Mark.
Bob was born in Greensboro, NC, he graduated from Northeast Guilford High school, McLeansville, North Carolina in 1968.
He is survived by his wife Christine, daughter Tiffany Collins, her partner Paul Beswick, and grandson Neil, sister Kathy (Lindsey) Gentry, her husband Lanny and Niece Jennifer Gentry Gill, and her husband Greg Gill, sister-in-law Kay Lindsey and Nephew Bryan Lindsey and his wife Dianna as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob was predeceased by his Mother Wilma Butler Lindsey, Father John Fred Lindsey, son Robert Jon Lindsey and brother Larry Lindsey. Bob was not an idle, passive spectator in the game of life. High energy, passion and gusto combined with honor and respect characterize a life well lived. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date in order to allow time to gather the family and friends Bob gathered on his “long strange trip”. Donations can be made in Bobs honor to: https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org

Robert Jozef Bacorn - November 02, 1971 - February 14, 2024

Departed: 02/14/2024 (Rockledge)
Obituary Preview: Robert Jozef Bacorn, 52, passed away on February 14, 2024 after a short-lived battle with coronary artery disease. His final months were spent at home with his family while he awaited surgery for his condition after a tumultuous weeklong stay in the hospital in November of 2023 following a severe heart attack.
Robert was born in Rockledge, Florida on November 2, 1971 to Jacqueline and Donald Bacorn, who preceded him in death. He spent his whole life in Brevard, having attended Cocoa High School.
As a teenager, Robert found his passion for cars and pursued jobs as a mechanic starting from age 14 until his passing. At the time of his passing, Robert was employed at the Cocoa branch of Maaco on Clearlake Road where he’d also worked for many years in the 2000s on their commission staff. From fixing mechanical problems under the hood to taping and painting the cars’ exterior, Robert could do it all. Aside from simply working on cars, Robert had his own fleet over the years that he would work on painting and modifying for hobby; his prized possessions included his 1963 Chevy II Nova, his GMC S15 Jimmy, and his 2000 Cadillac “Dadillac” Escalade. Robert was an aficionado for 60s and 70s-era muscle cars more than anything else.
Robert was also incredibly passionate about music. In every car he modified, he was always sure to add an elaborate stereo system to listen to his favorite songs; his favorite speakers were his 12” subwoofers, as he loved bass especially. His favorite genres by far were rock and metal, and one could hardly catch him listening to any radio station outside of 101.1 WJRR. His favorite bands included Def Lepperd, Mudvayne, Staind, Seether, and others.
Above all else, however, Robert loved his two daughters and third honorary daughter in the form of the family dog, Midnight. Robert raised his two girls, Sarah and Savannah, as a single parent effectively from the day they each were born in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Robert’s two daughters were always his top priority and main concern, and every day, even when physically whittled down by heart disease, he fought for them to be safe and comfortable. Every cent Robert made went to his children, even when it meant having to sell his prized S15 to keep the family afloat. Midnight, meanwhile, was adopted in 2016 as a newborn puppy after the family’s previous dog, Henry’s, untimely passing; Robert always loved dogs and few moments of his life were spent without a furry companion at his side. Robert’s bed was always Midnight’s favorite to steal, and she always made sure he had a loving cuddle buddy to nap with.
Robert is survived by his two beloved daughters, Sarah and Savannah Bacorn, and the beloved family fur baby, Midnight.

Richard "Dick" Clive Potter - April 27, 1932 - August 17, 2023

Departed: 08/17/2023 (Rockledge)
Obituary Preview: Richard “Dick” Clive Potter, Sr. (91), passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Holland Potter; son, Richard Potter, Jr. (Maura); daughter, Julie Gardner (Jeff); six grandchildren, Maggie Potter McNeal, Michael Stites, Jr., Carolyn Potter, Zachary Stites, Kristen Potter Stansell, and Tara Gardner Harrison; and six great grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Lillard Clive Potter; and his mother, Dorothy Ledbetter Potter.
Dick was born in the land of good ol’ Rocky Top - Lenoir City, Tennessee. He graduated from Lenoir City High School in 1950. He is a proud alumni of Carson Newman College where he played basketball and earned his teaching degree in 1954. On September 1, 1957, he married the love of his life and together they have called Brevard County home since 1962. He was a basketball coach and physical education teacher in Tennessee for five years and for Brevard County Public Schools for 25 years.
Dick dedicated his life to teaching and coaching children although his greatest passion and pride was that of his family. In addition to being a loving husband, father, grandfather (“g-pa”), son, friend and coach to many, he was an avid Tennessee Vols fan, a devout Christian, and sports trivia champ.
After he retired in 1987, you could find him on the golf course, volunteering at local youth basketball camps, or spending time with his grandchildren. He took an active role in the lives of his grandchildren – never missing a holiday or a family birthday, attending sporting events and school programs, and making sure they always had the monthly copy of the Upper Room daily devotional along with handpicked scriptures and prayers written by him.
The family will be having a private celebration of life.

Mark Stephen Raysich - January 31, 1961 - July 30, 2023

Departed: 07/30/2023 (Rockledge)
Obituary Preview: Mark was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, where his father was stationed with the Air Force. He always referred to himself as an “Air Force brat.” He grew up in Temple Hills, Maryland, and the Washington D.C. area, where he developed his musical talent. His mother was a concert pianist and music teacher, and Mark inherited her ability. He taught himself to play guitar at the age of nine and became an accomplished clarinet player. He attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C., where he was an active participant in their music program, even playing Tiger in a production of West Side Story. He went on to be a session player for a while, coming into the studio to play guitar for other musicians and bands. His playing can still be heard especially in Christian music of the 80s and early 90s, although he is uncredited.
He could play almost anything, including piano and drums, but, as he always said, his voice was the guitar. In addition to being a highly accomplished guitarist, Mark was a composer. He heard music in his head, he said and wrote some beautiful pieces for both guitar and piano, several of which he recorded himself in his home studio. He loved sharing his knowledge of music, discussing music theory, and sharing with friends new music he'd written or discovered.
After getting a degree in computer science, Mark moved to Florida in the late 80s and worked for Harris Semiconductor for several years. He left Harris to become one of the first employees of Witt Biomedical, a small company that built cardiac cath lab monitoring equipment and software. While there, Mark single-handedly developed the company's first imaging product. He traveled to almost every state in the U.S., training hospital staff and physicians on the use of the software and hardware. Mark was always in high demand by Witt's customers, who frequently requested him for follow-up training. His outgoing personality and eagerness to help made him popular with everyone who met him.
Following a back injury in 2000, Mark retired from Witt and eventually accepted a position at Kennedy Space Center, working in Safety Administration, specifically SA-E. During his time there, he developed a massive tracking spreadsheet to follow all OSHA reportable incidents and eventually worked on developing and refining the browser-based reporting system that is still used today. He was also KSC's resident “slip/trip/fall” expert, and helped develop a program to raise situational awareness and promote balance training, in order to reduce the number of injuries from slips, trips, and falls. He co-authored a White Paper on the subject that has been used as a source of information by international researchers. Mark was employed at KSC while the shuttle program was active, and several times got to visit the VAB, and even sit in the pilot's seat of Atlantis. He loved that he worked for such an important and innovative agency, and was proud to serve his country in that capacity. He used to joke that “taxpayers are getting their money's worth from me.”
Mark got several awards during his time at KSC, including several Gold Dollar awards, but the award he was most proud of was his NASA Silver Achievement Medal, awarded him in 2017. The medal is awarded to any government or non-government individuals or teams "for a stellar achievement that supports one or more of NASA's Core Values when it is deemed to be extraordinarily important and appropriate to recognize such achievement in a timely and personalized manner." Mark certainly embodied many of those core values and was proud to do so.
Mark loved cars, and restored a beloved 1969 Camaro SS, doing much of the work himself. He could always be counted on for mechanical advice, or to help turn a wrench. He loved all kinds of cars, but especially the big muscle cars from his younger days, and the German sports models from the land where he was born. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast, owning several Harley-Davidsons over the years. He always said that he could ride his bike and let the world fall away for a while.
Growing up, his family spent summers at Nag's Head in North Carolina. He loved the beach and the ocean. He learned to scuba dive and made several trips to the Florida Keys. Mark said of diving that, “when you're diving, that's all you can do. You can't worry about work or anything. You are totally in the moment.” He was always happiest and most relaxed while in the Keys, out on the reef.
Over the last few years, Mark's health began to fail. He developed several debilitating and extremely painful conditions, and in addition, suffered for many years from anxiety and insomnia. The combination of severe chronic pain and crippling anxiety became too much for him.
Mark is a Christian. He struggled at times with his Faith at times, but always had a strong belief in and close relationship with God. He's now at rest in the Lord, free at last from anxiety and pain, and able to sleep in peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of someone with a description of the person's life and list of family members. It's typically published in newspapers and online obituary platforms. An obituary acknowledges the person's death, provides funeral or memorial details, and reflects on their accomplishments and impact on their family and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a formal way to inform the community of a person's passing. They are important for honoring and celebrating the life of the deceased, providing closure for family and friends, and creating a historical record. They also include vital information for those who may wish to attend the funeral or send condolences.

What traditional information is included in an obituary?

Traditionally, an obituary includes the full name of the deceased, their date of birth and death, the cause of death (optional), significant life achievements, a list of surviving and predeceased relatives, funeral or memorial service details, and information about where to send donations or condolences.

Who typically writes the obituary?

An obituary is usually written by a close family member, a friend, or the funeral home handling the arrangements. Sometimes, individuals pre-write their own obituaries to ensure their life story is told as they wish.

Can an obituary be written before a person dies?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. This is often done to alleviate the burden on loved ones and to ensure the obituary includes all the aspects of their life they want to be remembered for.

Is there a difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person’s passing, usually with bare minimum details like the name, dates of birth and death, and service information. An obituary is more detailed and personal, reflecting on the person's life, career, passions, and family.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are typically published as soon as possible after a death, usually within a few days. This timing allows for friends and extended family to be informed in time to possibly attend services. However, the timeframe can vary based on the family's wishes, religious traditions, or publication schedules.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries can be published in local or national newspapers, on various online platforms dedicated to obituaries or memorialization, on the website or social media page of the funeral home, in community bulletins, and in trade or organization newsletters.

How does one submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you can contact the paper's obituary department for guidelines and rates. Most newspapers charge a fee based on length and whether you wish to include a photograph. They will provide specifications for submission, including deadlines and formatting requirements.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper varies widely depending on the publication's circulation size, length of the obituary, and whether a photograph is included. Costs can range from a small fee for a simple notice to several hundred dollars for a detailed obituary in a major newspaper.

How can one write a memorable obituary?

To write a memorable obituary, focus on the unique aspects of the person's life: share anecdotes, highlight their accomplishments and passions, and mention the impact they had on others. Use warm, respectful language, and consider including a few words about what they meant to those they leave behind.

What should one avoid including in an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal or sensitive information in an obituary, such as exact addresses, financial information, or anything that the deceased would not have wanted to be made public. Additionally, be cautious about mentioning the cause of death if it could cause distress or is too private.

Can obituaries be published online only?

Yes, with the rise of digital media, many families choose to publish obituaries online only. Online obituaries can be less expensive or free, easier to share via social networks, and allow for multimedia elements such as photo galleries or video.

What are the benefits of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online offers several benefits, including the ability to reach a wider audience, the inclusion of multimedia elements, and often more space to share the person's life story. It also remains accessible for a longer period, allowing future generations to view the information.

How do families handle disagreements about obituary content?

Families should ideally discuss and agree upon the content of an obituary before it's published. If disagreements arise, families can work with a funeral director or mediator to find a solution that honors the person's memory while respecting the feelings of all involved parties.

While there are no specific legal requirements for the content of an obituary, it's important to be truthful and respectful. Avoiding potentially defamatory statements or the inclusion of private information without consent is advised to prevent legal issues.

Can an obituary be changed after it has been published?

Once an obituary has been published in a newspaper, it cannot typically be changed, as newspapers are printed and distributed. However, online obituaries often offer more flexibility and can be updated or edited if necessary.

How do memorials differ from obituaries?

Memorials are typically less formal than obituaries and can be written and shared at any time after a person's death, sometimes on anniversaries or special occasions. Memorials focus on remembering and honoring the person's life rather than providing factual information about their death.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It is not necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary, although some may choose to do so. Family members, friends, or funeral home staff can write meaningful obituaries. Professional services can provide polished and eloquently written obituaries if desired.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary widely depending on where it is published and the life story of the deceased. Newspaper obituaries may range from a few lines to several paragraphs, while online obituaries may be longer due to fewer space restrictions.

How do personal preferences influence the writing of an obituary?

Personal preferences can greatly influence the writing of an obituary, reflecting the deceased's personality, values, and the way they lived their life. For instance, some may prefer a straightforward and factual obituary, while others may opt for one that is more narrative and detailed, including anecdotes and personal touches.
