What is the purpose of an obituary?

The purpose of an obituary is to formally announce a person's death, celebrate their life, and inform the community of service arrangements. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Who writes obituaries?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, birth and death dates, a summary of their life's achievements, family members, details about the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a cause of death if the family wishes to include it.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

The timeline for publishing an obituary can vary, but it is usually within a few days after a person's death to allow for community notifications before the funeral or memorial service.

Is there a standard obituary format?

While there is no one-size-fits-all format for obituaries, most include the deceased's name, life accomplishments, family member information, and service details, often written in a compassionate and respectful tone.

Publishing an obituary without the family's consent is not standard practice and is generally considered disrespectful. Most publications require verification from the family or the funeral home before publication.

Are obituaries free to publish?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?
