Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a formal announcement or public notice of someone's death, often accompanied by a short biography of the deceased. It is usually published in newspapers and on online platforms to inform the community and to celebrate and commemorate the life of the individual who has passed away.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, place of residence, date of birth, date of death, cause of death (optional), a brief account of their personal history, achievements, and interests, as well as details about the funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life. Additionally, it may include names of surviving family members and special messages or acknowledgments.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by immediate family members or close friends of the deceased. Sometimes a funeral director or an assigned staff member at the newspaper can assist in crafting the obituary. In the case of notable individuals, a journalist or writer may write the obituary.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve several important purposes: they notify the public of an individual's passing, provide information about upcoming funeral services or memorials, and celebrate the life and accomplishments of the deceased. They also serve as historical records for future generations and genealogical research.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is often a more detailed account of someone's life and includes biographical details, family information, and accomplishments. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more formal announcement of death with basic details such as name, date of death, and information about the funeral service, usually placed by the family directly in newspapers or online.

How do you write a respectful obituary?

To write a respectful obituary, start by collecting accurate information about the deceased. Write in a tone that honors the person's life and legacy, focusing on their accomplishments, personality, and the joy they brought to others. Ensure all facts are correct and that family members have the opportunity to review and approve the obituary before publication.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Most newspapers and online platforms charge a fee to publish an obituary, as it is considered a type of classified advertisement. The cost generally depends on the length of the obituary and any additional features such as photographs. Some local or community newspapers might offer free or discounted rates.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

The appropriate length for an obituary can vary but typically ranges from a few sentences for a simple death notice to several hundred words for a more detailed tribute. The length may be influenced by the individual's life story, the family's preferences, and the cost constraints of the publication.

Can obituaries be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including social media, memorial websites, funeral home pages, and online versions of local and national newspapers. Online obituaries may offer more flexibility with length and the ability to include multimedia elements like videos and photo galleries.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published soon after death, often within a few days to a week. This timing allows the community to be informed in time to attend funeral services or express condolences to the family. However, the exact timing can depend on the family's wishes and the publication's schedule.

What should you do if you find errors in an obituary?

If you find errors in an obituary, contact the publication where it was printed as soon as possible to request corrections. If the obituary is online, it may be easier to correct. It is important to make sure that the record accurately honors the life of the deceased.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is not necessary and is at the discretion of the family. While some families choose to include this information, others prefer to keep it private. The decision should be made based on what feels right for those closest to the deceased.

How can I personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, personal stories, or quotes that reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Share details about their hobbies, passions, and the impact they had on their community and loved ones. This approach helps create a meaningful tribute.

Can friends write and submit obituaries?

Yes, friends can write and submit obituaries, especially if they were close to the deceased and have the blessing or request of the family. It may be helpful for friends to collaborate with family members to ensure the obituary is comprehensive and respectful.

How do cultural practices influence obituaries?

Cultural practices and traditions can have a significant influence on the content and tone of obituaries. Different cultures may have specific customs or expressions of grief that are reflected in the way they honor the deceased. It is important to be sensitive and respectful of these practices when writing an obituary.

Who should be listed as surviving family members?

Surviving family members commonly listed in obituaries include the spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings of the deceased. It is also common to mention close extended family members such as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and sometimes even close friends or caregivers.

Should contributions to charity be mentioned in an obituary?

Mentioning contributions to charity in an obituary, such as a request for donations in lieu of flowers, is appropriate and can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's legacy. If the deceased had a particular cause or organization they were passionate about, this could be highlighted as well.

How can I ensure an obituary is factually accurate?

To ensure factual accuracy, double-check all dates, names, locations, and other details before submission. Consult with immediate family members and use official documents as references when possible. Accuracy is important for the historical record and for respecting the memory of the deceased.

Are there guidelines for sensitive information in obituaries?

Yes, it is advisable to handle sensitive information with care. Avoid including details that might compromise the privacy or safety of the surviving family members. Be cautious about how personal stories and family issues are presented, maintaining respect and dignity for the deceased and their loved ones.

What if the deceased did not have any close family?

If the deceased did not have any close family, an obituary can still be written and published by friends, community groups, or professional acquaintances. In such cases, the obituary might focus more on the individual's contributions to the community, career achievements, and friendships.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the newspaper's obituary department for submission guidelines and deadlines. Provide the written obituary, any desired photographs, and payment if required. You may need to submit this information via email, an online form, or in person, depending on the newspaper's practices.

Can I update an obituary after it has been published?

It may be possible to update an obituary after it has been published, especially if it's in an online format. Contact the publication as soon as possible to inquire about their policy on updates or corrections. For print media, this may require the publication of a new notice at an additional cost.
