Barbara Kincaid - July 03, 1946 - April 02, 2022

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Ambridge)
Obituary Preview: Baden - lived a life of volume, in terms of her generosity and ability to reach the highest of decibels. She was born on July 3, 1946 and passed away at Heritage Valley Beaver on April 2, 2022. She never missed a family birthday, anniversary, or life event. She loved kids and could soothe any baby to sleep. She was an aunt to all, showered even cousins of cousins with presents, and never missed sending a card or calling on birthdays and anniversaries. She gave the coolest gifts, and QVC will never know a more loyal customer, as her basement might in fact be their storage warehouse. She loudly cheered on her beloved Pittsburgh Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates, and she leaves behind quite the DVD collection. Nobody cooked up a juicier turkey at Thanksgiving or wore flashier holiday pins. When Barb wasn't cross stitching or crocheting, she volunteered at the Baden Legion Fish Fry where she was a past President of the Women's Auxiliary. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Parish where she served as a Christian Mother, a reader, and a volunteer at their pierogi sales. At age 51, she was given a lifelong wish of becoming a mother figure to her beloved nephew, Bradley. Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kincaid; parents, Stephen and Leona Kokan; brother, David Kokan; and sister-in-law, Cathy Kokan. She leaves behind two brothers Stephen (Kyle) and Don Kokan, which she would like to remind them that they "owe her" for giving up much of her teenage weekends to babysit them. Also left behind are many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Friends will be received on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, from 2-8 pm, in the Kasper Chapel of Alvarez-Hahn Funeral Services and Cremation , LLC, 547 8th Street, Ambridge, 724-266-2549. Sonia M. Zondos - September 03, 1929 - March 02, 2022

Departed: 03/02/2022 (Ambridge)
Obituary Preview: Harmony Twp. - The middle of three daughters, and born September 3rd, 1929, in Lorain, Ohio to Greek immigrants Nick Zondos and Mary (Mamous) Zondos, Sonia lived and worked nearly her entire life in the Ambridge area. Never married, she worked as a computer operator at Armco Steel for 31 years. Losing her mother in 1958, when Sonia was 28 years old, likely contributed to her developing irritable bowel disease. She then begged God to let her live another 5 years. She lasted much longer, living with and eventually having to care for her widowed father, until his death at age 97. Sonia battled many other chronic illnesses besides the Crohn's over the years, but was a trooper, giving up her pack-a-day smoking habit while in her 40s. Long a Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan, she never missed watching a game on TV, and talking on the phone about the games with her longtime friend, Rita Furis. She and Rita enjoyed telling a good joke. They were also avid card players, usually pinochle or hand-and-foot. One needed only play a few hands of pinochle with her to know she was exceptionally sharp. Brevity is the soul of wit, and Sonia had it in spades. She enjoyed vacationing around the country and world with many of her lifelong girlfriends, and especially back to Greece to visit relatives there. She lived independently until early January, when a fall at home led to hospitalization and a cascading series of ultimately fatal health problems. Preceded in death by her parents, elder sister Betty Kyriazi, and younger sister Angela, she is survived by her brother-in-law Ted Kyriazi, and two nephews Nick and Harold Kyriazi. She, sister Angela ("Toolie"), and father Nick spent every holiday with the Kyriazi family, and formed a large part of the two boys' worlds. In later years the nephews returned that love by helping her with shopping, trips to her various doctors, and taking care of her house and yard. Sonia and Toolie's having never married served as a role model for the boys, both of whom are lifelong bachelors. A viewing will be held at the Kasper Chapel of Alvarez-Hahn Funeral Services and Cremation, LLC, 547 8th Street, Ambridge, 724-266-2549, on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. Additional visitation will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 2930 Beaver Road, Ambridge, from 10 am until time of funeral service at 11 am. Burial will follow at Economy Cemetery

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in newspapers or online platforms. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may contain personal sentiments from the family honoring their loved one's life.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve to inform the community of a person's passing and to recognize and celebrate their life. They help to notify distant friends, colleagues, and community members who may want to pay their respects. Obituaries also act as a historical record for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by a family member, close friend, or sometimes by the funeral home assisting with the arrangements. It can also be composed by a professional obituary writer if the family wishes.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, the date and place of their passing, a list of surviving relatives, a short biography, details about the funeral or memorial service, and potentially a cause of death if the family wishes to share that information.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

To begin writing an obituary, start with the most essential information: the full name of the deceased, date of their passing, and age. Follow with a summary of their life, including significant milestones like marriage, children, career, and interests. Mention arrangements for services towards the end.

What makes a good obituary?

A good obituary succinctly captures the essence of the deceased's life, highlighting major accomplishments, personal characteristics, and the impact they had on others. It should be factual, but it can also reflect the personality of the deceased and the love of those who are mourning.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary; it can range from a few sentences to a full-length article. The length often depends on the space available in the publication and the amount the family wishes to share about the deceased's life.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including dedicated memorial websites, social media, online newspapers, and the funeral home's website. Online obituaries allow for a wider distribution and can often include multimedia elements like photos and videos.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, paid announcement that typically focuses on the facts of the death and service information without a detailed biography or personal messages. An obituary is usually more extensive and includes a biography and personal reflections.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families may wish to share this detail, often to provide clarity or raise awareness for a specific cause. However, it is not required, and many choose to keep this information private.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is commonly published within a few days following the death, which allows enough time for friends and family to be notified and make arrangements to attend services. Timeliness is important, but accuracy and thoughtfulness should not be sacrificed for speed.

How do you handle conflicting information when writing an obituary?

When faced with conflicting information, it is best to verify facts with immediate family members or other reliable sources. It is crucial to ensure the accuracy of the obituary to honor the deceased correctly and to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal or sensitive information that the deceased or family may not wish to disclose publicly, such as details of family disputes, negative aspects of one's life, or specifics that might invite identity theft, like full birthdates or addresses.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It is not necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary, although some families may choose to do so. Writing an obituary can be a therapeutic way for loved ones to reflect on the life of the deceased. However, those who are uncomfortable with the task or seeking a more polished piece may benefit from professional assistance.

How can an obituary reflect the personality of the deceased?

To reflect the personality of the deceased, include anecdotes, mention their hobbies, passions, humor, or unique expressions. Use a tone that matches how they lived their life, whether it was lighthearted, serious, or adventurous. Personal touches can make an obituary more meaningful.

What cultural considerations should be taken into account when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, you should consider the cultural and religious traditions of the deceased and their family. This may influence the wording, details included or omitted, and the type of information that is emphasized. It is important to be respectful of these practices and values.

Can an obituary be too personal or detailed?

While personal details can add depth to an obituary, it is possible to be overly detailed, making readers or family members uncomfortable. Balance personal reflections with public appropriateness, keeping in mind the obituary's broad audience.

How can family members contribute to the obituary?

Family members can contribute memories, personal stories, photographs, and important biographical details. The process can be collaborative, with different relatives providing various pieces of information to create a complete and heartfelt tribute.

Legally, it is essential to have permission from the closest next of kin to publish an obituary. It is also crucial to ensure accuracy to avoid defamation or misrepresentation. Additionally, avoid sharing information that could be used for fraudulent purposes.

How do you handle the deceased's digital legacy in an obituary?

In mentioning a digital legacy, you may reference the deceased’s online presence, such as a blog, social media profiles, or digital creations. Be mindful of the digital assets they have left behind and consider including information on how these will be preserved or managed going forward.

Where should an obituary be published to reach the intended audience?

An obituary should ideally be published in local newspapers where the deceased lived and worked, as well as in any other location where they may have had a significant presence or network. Online obituaries can also reach a broader audience, including distant relatives and friends.

Can an obituary be updated or changed once published?

For print obituaries, once published in a newspaper, it cannot be changed. However, online obituaries can often be updated or edited as needed, especially those posted on dedicated memorial websites or social media platforms.
