Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, often found in a newspaper or online, that announces a person's death and offers a brief account of their life. It typically includes information on the deceased's family, career, accomplishments, and details of the funeral or memorial service.

Why is it important to write an obituary?

Writing an obituary serves several purposes: it informs the community of a death, celebrates the life of the deceased, provides details about the funeral or memorial services, and officially records the person's passing for future generations.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are most commonly written by family members or close friends, often with the assistance of a funeral director. Sometimes, individuals pre-write their obituaries, and in other cases, a newspaper staff may write one based on information provided by the family.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, ranging from a few lines to a full article. Newspapers might have specific word limits, while online obituaries can often be longer and more detailed.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, date of death, birthplace, family members, significant life achievements, hobbies, and information regarding the funeral or memorial service. It might also contain a brief mention of the cause of death, if the family wishes to share it.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary if the family prefers to keep it private. The decision is a personal one and should be respected.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you can contact the paper's obituary department for submission guidelines, costs, and deadlines. For online obituaries, look for websites that provide guidelines for publishing and may offer templates to help you create the notice.

Are there free options for posting an obituary?

Some community newspapers and online platforms may allow you to post an obituary for free, while most larger newspapers and websites generally charge a fee. It's worth researching various options to determine what's available in your area.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. Newspapers and online memorial sites typically offer this option, sometimes for an additional fee.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

While an obituary is often a detailed tribute that highlights the life of the deceased, a death notice is a more straightforward announcement of the death, providing minimal information and sometimes only including service details, without any biographical content.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published several days after the death, allowing time for the family to make necessary arrangements and gather information for the notice. It should be published before the funeral or memorial service to inform the community and invite attendees.

Can I write my own obituary before I die?

Yes, it's not uncommon for individuals to write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that the obituary reflects their wishes and provides an accurate account of their life.

How do we handle disagreements within the family about what to include in the obituary?

Disagreements can be challenging. It's important to communicate openly and respectfully consider the desires of all parties involved. When needed, a mediator such as a funeral director or a trusted family friend can help resolve any disputes.

Should an obituary mention donations to a charity instead of flowers?

If the deceased or the family prefers charitable donations in lieu of flowers, an obituary can definitely mention this preference. Including the chosen charity's name and contact details can also be helpful for those wanting to honor the request.

Is it okay to share personal sentiments and anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes, personal sentiments, stories, or anecdotes can be a beautiful addition to an obituary, provided they are respectful and considered appropriate for public reading. They help to personalize the tribute and can oftentimes provide comfort to the readers.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should match the spirit of the person it commemorates. It can range from formal and respectful to warm and celebratory, depending on the deceased's personality and the family's wishes.

Is there a standard structure to follow for writing an obituary?

While there is no strict rule, many obituaries follow a general structure: starting with an announcement of death, followed by biographical information, family details, service times, and a closing message or a special thanks.

How do I handle writing an obituary for someone with a complicated or difficult life?

Focus on the positive aspects of their life and the impact they had on others. It's not necessary to include every detail of their life; rather, select what you feel portrays them fairly and respectfully.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

In print form, once it's published, it's permanent. Online obituaries, however, may often be edited or updated. Check with the publication or website for their specific policies.

What if I cannot afford the cost of publishing an obituary?

Some papers and websites have reduced rates or waived fees for those who cannot afford them. Additionally, consider using social media or free community platforms to share the news at no cost.

How can I write a memorable obituary that truly honors the deceased?

A memorable obituary often includes heartfelt details, highlights the individual's unique traits or accomplishments, and speaks to the lives they've touched. Aim to capture the essence of the person with sincerity and care.
