She and Ernie were married on March 31, 1944 in South Mills, NC, by the local Justice of the Peace.  She continued her career while Ernie served in the U.S. Navy overseas.  When he returned, they lived in Daytona Beach, where they raised their four children until moving to Fort Lauderdale in the 1960’s.  They frequently spent time in Pierson and moved there permanently in 1971.  Marvena, known affectionately as ”Granny”, was well known in Pierson for her volunteer service at the Methodist Thrift Shop, the elementary school cafeteria, and local blood drives. She was a past president of the Pierson Garden Club and a longtime member of Eastern Star.  In addition, she drove people to appointments and prepared and delivered meals to those who were ill.  She helped raise her grandson Jason and sought opportunities to assist anyone in need.   During their 78 wonderful years of marriage,  Ernie and Marvena were blessed with four children, eight grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren:  Marvin (Stephanie) and son Darryn (Dolly) and daughters Angeline and Franceska; daughter Joanna (Eric) Pines and children Asher, Yosef, Sara, Naftali, and Tehilla;  Karen (now deceased) and son Greg (Curtis) Catevenis and children Maddox, Riley and Parker; Richard and daughter Evaleen (Andy) Schmidt and children Brock and Kaitlyn; and son Alec; and Kevin (Joyce) and son Jason (Lacey) and children Braelyn and Shelby; daughter Krissi (Danny) Strickler and children DJ and Ashlyn; and son Jake (Kelsey) and children Skyler, Payton and Gavin.

Wanda Stevens Knox - August 09, 1925 - March 03, 2022

Departed: 03/03/2022 (DeLand)
Obituary Preview: Wanda Stevens Knox was born August 9, 1925, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 3, 2022.
When the great depression hit it forced her father to move from town to town in search of work and resulted in her spending summers with relatives in rural central Louisiana. The constant relocation, the poverty, and the uncertainty made for a most difficult childhood.
Wanda was a brilliant girl, graduating Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. Her electives her senior year were Calculus, Latin and Shorthand. During the Second World War she did secretarial work at Camps Beauregard and Livingston. She perfected the ability to be the type of support person who ran things behind the scenes wherever she worked. She was always “the glue that held the thing together while someone else got the credit.”
In 1954 she met Maitland Knox. They married in 1956. Together they built a highly successful business and raised four children. She devoted her life to supporting her husband and preparing her children for success, being, in a thousand ways, the glue that held the home and family together, even as her children married and had homes and careers of their own.
Her passions were reading, travel, and church. As to the first, an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a phenomenal memory, kept her reading countless books a year, including reading her Bible through each year, until the time of her passing. As to the second, she visited all fifty states, six continents and forty countries, having a deep love for America’s national parks. This passion led Wanda and her husband to conceive and see the establishment of The Canaveral National Seashore. As to the third, she trusted the Lord Jesus as her Savior at an early age and had a life-long, unwavering faith in the Word of God. She not only attended church but served its members in countless ways and faithfully supported world missions throughout her lifetime.
She lived with class and dignity. She managed to be both strong-willed and gracious. She knew how to improve and strengthen everything in which she was involved, while never needing to be in the lead position. To all who knew her throughout her long and eventful life she was a wonderful example of a Christian lady.
She is survived by her sons James (Lilian) and David (Lori), her daughters Diana (Dennis) and Linda (Don), and eight grandchildren.
Per her request, in lieu of flowers please send memorial gifts to The Bible Baptist Church of Deland, Florida, where her memorial service will be held March 12 at 2 pm. Her memorial service may be viewed live or later via that church’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online. It serves as a way to inform the community of the loss and share details about the deceased's life, accomplishments, family, and any forthcoming funeral or memorial services.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

While both an obituary and a death notice inform the public of someone's passing, a death notice is usually shorter and simply announces the death, sometimes including brief details about the funeral services. Obituaries often provide a more comprehensive biography of the deceased, including personal stories, professional achievements, and family information.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends, but they can also be prepared by funeral home staff, or, in the case of prominent individuals, by journalists.

What information should an obituary include?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth, date of death, and a brief summary of their life, including significant milestones and relationships. Details of the memorial service, burial, and any requests for donations in lieu of flowers may also be included.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice. Some families may wish to share this information, while others may prefer to keep it private. There is no obligation to disclose the cause of death in an obituary.

Can an obituary include photographs?

Yes, obituaries can include photographs. A common practice is to add a recent picture of the deceased or one that represents them well. Some obituaries may feature multiple photos showing different stages of the person’s life.

Should the tone of an obituary always be sad?

Not necessarily. While an obituary acknowledges the loss of a loved one, the tone can reflect the deceased's personality and spirit. It can be heartfelt and somber, or even light-hearted and humorous if it is respectful and appropriate.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are typically published within a week after the person's death to ensure timely notification for any services or memorials. However, the specific timing can vary depending on the publication schedule of the chosen platform and the family’s readiness to publish the information.

What is the average cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can range from being free of charge for a simple notice to several hundred dollars for extended space in a large newspaper. Prices vary based on the length of the obituary, whether a photo is included, and the specific publication's rate.

Can you publish an obituary in multiple locations?

Yes, families often choose to publish obituaries in multiple locations, such as in local newspapers where the deceased resided or grew up, as well as online memorial sites to reach broader audiences.

What should be considered when choosing an obituary's length?

The length of an obituary should be considered based on the life complexity of the deceased, the amount of information the family wishes to share, and the cost implications of longer obituaries in printed publications.

How can family members be included in the obituary?

Family members are typically listed in an obituary as survivors or predeceased relatives. Close family is often mentioned by name and relation to the deceased, but you can also include a general acknowledgment of extended family and friends if space allows.

Is it okay to include achievements and affiliations?

Yes, it's encouraged to include the deceased's significant achievements, awards, and affiliations. This can highlight their professional life, community service, or membership in various organizations, offering a fuller picture of who they were.

How do you handle mentioning survivors from complicated family situations?

In complicated family situations, it is important to remain sensitive and respectful. Include those who were significant in the deceased's life, and try to avoid potential conflicts. If uncertain, it's appropriate to use general terms like "cherished by many close friends and family."

Can you include requests for charitable donations in an obituary?

Many obituaries include requests for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. It's customary to mention one or a few preferred charities, providing an opportunity for others to honor the deceased's memory in a meaningful way.

What language should be used in writing an obituary?

The language used in an obituary should be respectful and clear, avoiding overly flowery or complex phrases. It's also important to be accurate and truthful while maintaining a tone of remembrance and celebration of life.

How can an obituary be personalized?

An obituary can be personalized by mentioning the deceased's hobbies, passions, humor, or even a favorite saying. Sharing anecdotes or characteristic traits can add a unique touch that captures the essence of the individual.

Should funeral or memorial service details be provided?

Yes, providing details of funeral or memorial services in an obituary is common. This information allows friends and acquaintances to attend and pay their respects. Be sure to include the date, time, and location, as well as any specific requests, such as attire or donations.

Can the deceased's pets be mentioned in an obituary?

Yes, if pets were an important part of the deceased's life, it is entirely appropriate to mention them in an obituary. Acknowledging beloved pets can offer a fuller picture of the individual's life and loves.

Is it appropriate to include a quote or poem in an obituary?

Including a meaningful quote or poem that reflects the deceased's beliefs or personality can be a beautiful addition to an obituary. It should be chosen carefully to ensure it complements the overall message and tone.

What should be done if an error is found in a published obituary?

If an error is found in a published obituary, it’s important to contact the publication immediately to correct the mistake. Most publications have policies in place for such situations and will work with the family to rectify errors promptly.

How can privacy be protected when publishing an obituary?

To protect privacy, avoid including sensitive information such as the deceased's home address or personal details that could be misused. Additionally, consider the potential for identity theft when deciding how much information to share publicly.
