Is an obituary different from a death notice?

What information is commonly included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life, career, hobbies, and achievements, the names of surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and often a message of remembrance or thanks.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Each newspaper or website has its own submission process, usually outlined on their site or print publication. Typically, you would contact the publication directly, provide the obituary text, and possibly pay a fee, depending on the length and publication criteria.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

No, obituaries can vary greatly in length. They can be as short as a few sentences or long enough to detail the deceased's full life story. Newspapers may charge by the word or line, which might affect the length.

Can an obituary be written before someone dies?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries as part of advance funeral planning or appoint someone to do so. Prewritten obituaries are also common for prominent figures.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and honor the life of the deceased. It can range from formal and straightforward to more personal and heartfelt, depending on the wishes of the family and the personality of the deceased.

How quickly should an obituary be published after someone passes away?

Obituaries are generally published soon after death, often within a few days, to inform people of the passing and provide details on any immediate services or memorials.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Can an obituary be updated after it is published?

In print, an obituary cannot easily be updated, but online obituaries can sometimes be edited or additional information can be added. Check with the website or publication regarding their policy on updates.

It is up to the family to decide which relations are included in an obituary. It often includes close relatives, but mentioning extended family and close friends can be done at the family's discretion to honor the connections the deceased had.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary?

How do I write an obituary that truly honors my loved one's memory?

Are obituaries published internationally?

How can an obituary be more than just a list of facts?

An obituary can tell a story through personal touches such as memories, anecdotes, or quotes. The way you articulate the life events and the characteristics of the deceased can resonate emotionally with readers and honor a life well-lived.

Is it acceptable to request charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for charitable donations in place of flowers. It’s often seen as a way to honor the deceased's values or support a cause that was important to them.

Do obituaries have to be published in print, or can they be digital only?

Obituaries can be published in either print or digital formats, or both. In modern times, online obituaries are becoming increasingly popular due to the wide reach and the ability for friends and family to share memories and condolences.

Are there alternative ways to share the news of someone's passing if an obituary isn't possible?

Yes, there are alternatives such as social media announcements, community bulletin posts, word of mouth, and church or community group notifications. However, these methods may not have the formal recognition or reach of a traditional obituary.

Can an obituary be a place for advocacy or raising awareness about causes?

Certainly, families sometimes use obituaries to raise awareness about social issues, diseases, or other causes that were important to the deceased or affected by their life or passing.

How has the role of obituaries changed with social media?

Social media has changed the immediacy and reach of death announcements, making it easier to quickly disseminate information. It's also enabled an interactive aspect where people can instantly share their condolences and memories.
