Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online. It usually includes a brief summary of the deceased's life story, their accomplishments, family members, and details about funeral or memorial services. An obituary serves as both a public announcement of death and a tribute to the individual’s life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone’s passing which usually includes very basic information such as name, age, and information about the funeral service. An obituary, on the other hand, is more detailed and personalized, often including a biography, family survivors, and special memories or acknowledgments.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. In some cases, individuals may even write their own obituaries as part of pre-planning their funeral arrangements. Additionally, staff writers at newspapers or websites often assist in editing or crafting obituaries for publication.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary. It often depends on the platform where it will be published and the life stories and achievements of the deceased. However, most obituaries range from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Most newspapers and online platforms charge a fee to publish an obituary. The cost can vary depending on the length of the obituary and the publication’s pricing structure. In some cases, a short death notice may be free or available at a lower cost.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

You can submit an obituary to a newspaper or website by contacting the publication directly. They will provide you with submission guidelines, pricing, and deadlines. Some publications may allow submissions through their websites or via email.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased’s full name, age, place of residence, date of death, a brief overview of their life (education, career, interests), names of surviving family members, details about the service arrangement, and any memorial contributions or special messages.

Can I add a photo to an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. The publication may have specifications for the photo size and quality, so be sure to check their submission guidelines.

How do I write a tasteful and respectful obituary?

To write a tasteful and respectful obituary, start with a clear and simple announcement of the death, include a concise biography that honors the person’s life, and conclude with funeral service details and special thanks or requests. Remain factual, respectful, and considerate of the feelings of the deceased’s loved ones.

What is the usual turnaround time for publishing an obituary?

Turnaround time varies by publication. Newspapers often require obituaries to be submitted several days before the desired publication date. Online platforms may have quicker turnaround times, sometimes within 24 hours.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

This depends on the publication. Some online platforms may allow for edits, while print publications typically cannot change an obituary once it has gone to press. It's important to proofread the obituary carefully before submitting it.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

No, mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely up to the family’s preference. Some families choose to include this information, while others prefer to keep it private.

How can I ensure the obituary honors the personality and spirit of my loved one?

To honor your loved one's personality and spirit, include anecdotes or characteristics that highlight their uniqueness, mentioning their passions, hobbies, or any quirks that made them special. Use a warm and affectionate tone that reflects their nature.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is common and appropriate to suggest memorial contributions to a specific charity in lieu of flowers. This can be a way to honor the deceased’s values or support a cause that was important to them.

Should children and pets be mentioned in an obituary?

Yes, children, grandchildren, and even pets can be mentioned in an obituary if they were an important part of the deceased's life. It can provide a more complete picture of who the person was and whom they loved.

Can I write a humorous obituary?

While obituaries are generally solemn, a humorous obituary can be appropriate if it suits the personality of the deceased and is done tastefully. It is important to consider the feelings of all readers and to strike a balance between humor and respect.

There are no specific legal requirements for an obituary’s content. However, ensure that the information provided is accurate and respectful, as obituaries are public records.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a week after the death, but the timing can vary based on when the funeral or memorial service is scheduled. Sometimes, there may be reasons to delay the announcement to coordinate with family or service arrangements.

Can obituaries be posted online exclusively?

Yes, many choose to publish obituaries exclusively online through social media, specialized memorial websites, or the online version of local newspapers. Online obituaries can be more accessible and shared easily with a wider audience.

How can we make managing responses to an obituary easier?

To manage responses effectively, designate someone close to the family to monitor and respond to messages and condolences. Consider setting up a dedicated email address or online memorial page where people can leave their sentiments.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary?

If the deceased expressed a wish not to have an obituary published, their wishes should be respected. Alternatives like a private family gathering or a personal letter to close friends can be considered to inform and honor the deceased without public announcements.
