Michael August Bante - December 28, 1946 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Camdenton)
Obituary Preview: Michael A. Bante, age 77, of Camdenton, MO passed away suddenly April 3rd, 2024.
Michael was born on December 28th, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, to his parents Dorothea and August Bante. When telling stories of his childhood, he fondly recalled spending time with his family at Walleye Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks fishing, swimming and waterskiing. Michael loved “the lake life” and it became part of his soul.
As a young adult, Michael “Crash” Bante attended Lafayette High School where he participated in basketball, baseball and track. Upon graduation in 1964, he attended Southeast Missouri State University where he earned a degree in Biology and Chemistry. It was during this time that he met his wife Linda in an Abnormal Psychology class. A mutual friend introduced them and that was it. Six months later, they were married. After college, Michael began his career at K-V Pharmaceutical Company as a bench chemist.
In 1981 Michael and his family moved to Puerto Rico to start a new chapter in their lives. Michael worked as the Director of Quality Control for Schering Plough. During his time on the island Michael, Linda and the family made many dear friends - - Many of whom they are still in touch with today. The Bante family lived, loved, worked and played in Puerto Rico for 10 years. Family gatherings often bring back fond memories and stories from their time there.
Michael’s job moved the family back to the states in 1991, where they lived in Naperville, Illinois for 17 years. After his work in Naperville had concluded, Michael and Linda retired to Lake of the Ozarks. Michael stayed active by serving as a board member of his condo association for many years. At Sportsmans, residents remember Michael as their “go to” guy for everything. He served as dockmaster, pool man, handyman, treasurer and secretary. He enjoyed time spent with his children, grandchildren, and friends. Whether it was pulling people around the lake on a tube for hours, teaching the kids how to water ski, grilling amazing steaks, serving the perfect happy hour, or shaking the perfect martini, Pops aimed to make everyone’s day at the lake perfect. He loved to hear the words “Thanks Pops!”
Michael is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; his sister Barbara (Dennis) Bequette; his three daughters Angela (Scott) Mushkin, Melinda (Mike) Burns and Susanna (Wayne) Hartmann; his son Greg (Katy) Bante; his 10 grandchildren; Riley, Ryann, Bobby, Reagan, and Reese (Mushkin); Jack and Isabella (Hartmann); Madeline, Eleanor, Bennett (Bante).

Upon graduation from Pomona high school in 1965, Gidget spent the next few years raising her daughter and working. In the 1970s, Gidget found a love for her career job of 38 years in being a cross-country semi truck driver. She was one of the first female drivers in the industry. At that time, many male drivers harped on her about doing the job. Gidget, being the headstrong stubborn Italian that she was, proved her worth on the truck. She was one of the best there was. She learned how to work on her own motor, backed her and other trailers into some of the tightest loading docks, and had no problems with moving her loads around. She was always so proud of the fact that she ended her career with over 1,000,000 miles. During her years of trucking, she met the love of her life Robert “Bob” C. Blair, also a truck driver, in a truck-stop. Her and Bob decided they couldn’t live “miles” apart and decided to partner up and drive together. Gidget and Bob spent many years and miles on the road and worked magnificently together. In 1989, they got married and spent the rest of her career years driving together.
Her career came to an abrupt halt when in the early 2000s she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Gidget then found her home in Brookings Oregon, where she spent her next many years with family and friends and enjoying her life. In 2012, Bob suddenly passed away unexpectedly. Gidget’s health began to decline over the next years to come. In 2018, her daughter, Candi moved her out to her final home in Climax Springs Missouri. Candi had an apartment built on her land overlooking Lake of the Ozarks and was Gidget’s caretaker for the remainder of her life. Gidget always enjoyed going out on the boat and enjoying the sun, listening to music, and being with her family.
Gidget was proceeded in death by her mother, Edith M. Olafson; father Fredrick J. Luikart, brother Steven Olafson, aunt Virginia A. and husband Don Loar; and the love of her life Robert C. Blair.
Gidget was a truly amazing woman whose impact will forever be felt by her friends and family. Her passing will forever be felt and missed. Her love for her friends and family will forever be ingrained in all she knew.
A celebration of life will take place in Climax Springs, Missouri on July 4, 2024 for anyone who can attend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of the person's life, information about their surviving family members, details about the funeral or memorial service, and can also include a personal message or reflection on the person's life and impact.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no fixed standard for the length of an obituary, as it can vary depending on the platform it's published on and the length of the life story being told. However, newspaper obituaries may be shorter due to space constraints, while online obituaries can sometimes be more detailed and lengthy.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date of death, a list of surviving relatives, a brief account of their personal and professional life, their education, achievements, and any charitable organizations they were part of, as well as funeral or memorial service details.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are generally published soon after the death, ideally within a few days. This timing helps inform friends, community members, and acquaintances in a timely manner, particularly if funeral services are upcoming.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Often a family member or a close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, individuals pre-write their own obituaries to reflect their wishes. Funeral homes may also offer obituary writing services as part of their package.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you can contact the publications’ obituary department for submission guidelines and costs. For online platforms, you often can follow the instructions provided on the website for creating and posting an obituary.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, with the cost typically depending on the length of the obituary and any additional features, like photographs. Online platforms may offer free postings or charge a fee for premium services.

Is it required to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

No, there is no legal requirement to publish an obituary in a newspaper. It is a personal choice, often decided by the deceased's family or the executor of the estate.

Can an obituary be published without a date of death?

While it is customary to include the date of death in an obituary, it is not absolutely necessary. Some people may choose to withhold the date for privacy reasons or other personal preferences.

Is it appropriate to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

This is a personal choice. Some families may wish to include the cause of death, especially if it relates to a charitable cause or awareness, while others may prefer to keep this information private.

What tone should an obituary have?

An obituary should reflect the tone that best honors the deceased. For most, this is a respectful and affectionate summary of their life, but humor or light-hearted anecdotes might be appropriate if it fits the personality of the individual.

How can I personalize an obituary?

You can personalize an obituary by including specific anecdotes, quotes, or unique attributes of the deceased, their philosophies on life, and the special impact they had on their community and loved ones.

Can anyone write and submit an obituary for a deceased person?

In theory, yes, anyone can write an obituary. However, it is best practice to have the obituary written or approved by a family member, close friend, or executor to respect the wishes of the deceased and the immediate family.

How can readers verify the authenticity of an obituary?

Readers can verify the authenticity of an obituary by checking for service details and contacting the funeral home or organization handling the arrangements, or by looking for additional announcements or confirmations from family members on social media or other communication platforms.

Is it possible to update an obituary after it has been published?

Whether an obituary can be updated after publication depends on where it was published. In the case of a newspaper, it might be possible to publish a correction or update in a subsequent issue, often at an additional cost. For online obituaries, there is usually more flexibility to make updates.

What if I spot an error in an obituary?

If you spot an error in an obituary, you should contact the person who submitted it or the publication's obituary department to request a correction. For online obituaries, the submitter can often make corrections directly.

Can obituaries be removed from online platforms?

Although less common, it is possible to have an obituary removed from an online platform, especially if you are a close family member or the executor of the estate and can prove that the content is inappropriate or wishes to maintain privacy. The terms and conditions of the individual website can affect this process.

Should children and grandchildren be listed in an obituary?

It is customary to list immediate family members, including children and grandchildren, in an obituary to acknowledge the deceased's family connections. However, each family's situation and preference may vary.

How important is it to include a photograph with an obituary?

While not mandatory, including a photograph with an obituary can provide a personal touch and help to remind readers of who the deceased was, particularly if they had not been in contact recently. It also helps in a visual recall for acquaintances.

What are some alternatives to traditional obituaries?

Aside from the formal obituary, families may choose to write a death notice, a life tribute, or memorial article. Additionally, online memorials on social media or memorial sites are becoming increasingly popular as they allow for a more personalized and potentially interactive space for remembrance.

How do obituaries differ across cultures and religions?

Obituaries can differ significantly across cultures and religions, reflecting varying traditions, customs, and practices concerning honoring the deceased. Some cultures may include more detailed genealogies while others might focus on the individual’s contributions to the community or religious life.
