Mark Stephen Combs - August 03, 1960 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Wheat Ridge)
Obituary Preview: Born August 3, 1960, in Greater St. Louis, Missouri to Robert Combs and Jacqulyn (Anderson) Bandiera, Mark passed away after a month-long battle with leukemia on January 24, 2024, in Denver, Colorado. He was 63 years old. After growing up around the Midwest, Mark’s family settled in Omaha, Nebraska. His early life saw him being a kid: playing baseball and football, annoying his younger siblings Kathi and Keith, and generally getting into some sort of trouble. Jacque can recount the number of times she got a phone call to pick Mark up along with his friends on occasion!
Mark graduated from Millard High School in June 1978 and joined the Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist.
Upon discharge from the Air Force, Mark decided he would try something different and became an over-the-road truck driver working for several different companies including Werner Enterprises and Monfort. He also took the independent route owning his own rig for a time. His travels took him from coast to coast. And those of you who knew him then and even recently, would understand his handles Comfortably Numb and Gravedigger. Stories told, he picked up the Gravedigger handle by following a state trooper (state unknown) at what one can only imagine an excessive rate of speed when another driver commented on how he was digging his own grave.
Mark loved to fish, his favorite spot located in Wyoming making the trip with the kids and friends. Of course, fishing at any spot made for a better day than being at work.
Later in life, he discovered cooking and baking, and man could he cook and bake. If you didn’t have the opportunity to taste his chili, well, you missed out! And then there are the cookies…he liked to say that adding an extra ¼ cup of flour made a better cookie.
Another of Mark’s interests was woodworking. Starting out with small projects, he made beautiful pieces for the family, completing cutting boards for each of the kids in the last couple of years.
And we can’t forget golf…the sport he loved to hate but played all the same. His last few rounds he especially enjoyed with the kids and his brother among others. One of Mark’s golf highlights was the opportunity to attend “The Peoples Open” at TPC Scottsdale a few times and hang out at the 16th hole.
Mark met his wife Shelly on a Greyhound Bus headed to Denver and they were married several months later in October 1987. It must have been around this time he became a Denver Broncos fan. Although he wasn’t sure about admitting to that the last few seasons. Mark loved his kids and grandkids – sons Justin and Jacob and daughter Kaite. Following in their dad’s footsteps, Justin is now a father of, soon to be, three grandkids; Kaite became an OTR driver, now a fleet manager; and Jacob moved into transportation as a DSR. He played with the grandkids every opportunity he got! Mark was a long-time aviation enthusiast flying in his dad’s Decathlon, hanging out at the Millard Airport, and traveling to airshows. He returned to aviation and graduated from Colorado Aero Tech in 1992. Mark’s aviation career spanned 24 years taking the family to multiple states including Wisconsin, Vermont, Oklahoma, Missouri, Idaho, California, and Arizona. And after having lived in Vermont, no day was cold to Mark. He would typically say, “It’s a beautiful Vermont summer day.”
Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents James and Elenor, and Vena; father Robert; stepfather Richard; and sister Kathi. He is survived by his wife Shelly; son Justin and wife Megan with grandkids Grayson, Maizie, and Cameron; daughter Kaite; son Jacob; friend and Justin’s mother Angela; mother Jacque; brother Keith and wife Tami, along with cousins, nieces, and extended family. He will be missed by not only family but numerous friends and former co-workers.
His ashes will be spread at his favorite fishing hole in Wyoming, date to be determined. Please contact Mark’s family at mscombsmemorial2024@gmail.com for memorial information.

She married her high school sweetheart, Bob Kerr, and they made their home in the nearby area known as Mountair, currently a part of the City of Lakewood.

Connie kept active after her retirement. She and Bob loved going to the grandkids and great grandkids sporting events and bowling, activities she continued after she lost Bob. She enjoyed getting together with her sisters once a week for dinner and games, trips to the pool with the great grandkids and nieces, and going to lunch with friends once a month.
In her retirement, she and Bob loved their garden, flowers, and yard. With the help of her family, she was able to keep all her flowers blooming each summer.
Finally, Connie loved her dogs. They each had a special place in her heart and were waiting for her on the Rainbow Bridge.

Paul J. Satriano - February 23, 1930 - January 14, 2024

Departed: 01/14/2024 (Wheat Ridge)
Obituary Preview: Paul J. Satriano, of Golden, CO, was born on the family farm in Welby, CO on Feb, 23, 1930, to Paolo and Concetta Satriano. He was the youngest of nine boys who preceded him in death: Jim, Clyde, Jerry, George, John, Rocco, Mike, and Joe. He is also preceded by his wife of 68 years, Helen “Chickie” Satriano, who passed on Dec. 24, 2022. He is survived by his three children: Tom, Paula (Doug) and Maria, as well as six grandchildren: Dean, Matt and Darby, Paul and Erin, and Ryan, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Paolo Satriano came to Colorado in 1911 from Potenza, Italy. His wife Concetta (Pace), followed him in 1914, with their first two sons, Vincenzo (Jim) 5 and Gaetano (Clyde) 3. Seven more boys were born in the Denver area. The Satriano’s were part of many Italian families who were known as Truck Farmers. Many families from Potenza (Denver’s Sister City) lived in Welby. They had acreage to grow vegetables, with plenty of family help!
There were 21 years between Jim and Paul. While most of the boys were born a couple of years apart, Paul was seven years younger than Joe. As anyone around the ‘40’s –‘60’s would attest- the brothers had a close and special bond that was palpable. The matriarch of the family, Concetta, was an amazing woman who worked hard on the farm. She was also a great cook, but her specialty was love! Her passing in 1967 was a tough loss on the family, but especially for Paul, who was just 37. Her death at age 75 marked the end of an era. Paul’s passing means that it is the end of another era, because now all of the Satriano’s are together again.
Paul met his best friend at Mapleton School, Ed DePinto. Ed was a good football player. Paul excelled in basketball, whose team went undefeated until losing in the high school championship in 1947 for Westminster Union. He was also very close to his cousin, Fred Gabriel. Fred’s mother, Josephine, was Concetta’s youngest sister. The two were very close. Paul and Fred loved each other like brothers and even ended up in the service together for the Colorado Air National Guard. Soon, both Eddie (Inez) and Fred (Virginia) got married to wonderful women. Paul followed suit a few years later.
Paul and Helen met at the Air Force Finance Center in their bowling league in 1953. They got married on Sept. 18, 1954 and were ironically the first of the family to leave North Denver when they moved to Jefferson County; first Edgewater, then Wheat Ridge.
Paul worked for his brothers, Clyde and Joe, for Satriano Brothers in his early years, but in 1960 embarked into car sales at Hover Motors, “the sharpest pencil in town”. His continual reminder to everyone was that he was very proud to claim that he had never taken advantage of a single customer in his illustrious 42 year career! He was recognized for many years for his sales, and was one of six Ford salesmen chosen around the country to test drive the new Ford Maverick at the Dearborn facilities in January of 1969. He then appeared on Channel 7’s Starr Yelland Show to talk about his experience. After Hovers closed, he sold Chevys at Jerry Roth, then Cadillacs at Medved, retiring in 2002.
Paul loved gardening, music and sports, especially the Yankees, Broncos and Nuggets. He talked about that in his “next life” he was going to be a crooner like Sinatra. Six of the Satriano brothers loved to sing, and six were good athletes. Paul was both.
He enjoyed his grandkids and spent the last 5½ years living with his son, Tom, and grandsons, Dean and Matt. He got to tell stories, reminisce, and have lunch with family and friends, like his good pal, Frank Pomponio. He truly enjoyed his final years.
Paul wanted a celebration after his passing. He loved family get-togethers, so we’re going to have one! Email with the subject heading, “Paul”, to pjs19302024@gmail.com for more information.

Departed: 01/10/2024 (Wheat Ridge)

We will all miss her so very much. Betty was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, a quiet suburb of approximately 7,000 people about 30 miles west of Chicago. At the age of 5, her father died which left her mother to raise 3 children on her own: sister Barbara – 7, Betty – 5, and Paul – 2. Her mother then became the mother/father role model for all 3 children. Her mother was very successful in all roles: she set up a business as a brick distributor in Chicago and also was a sympathetic and loving young mother.
After starting piano lessons in the 5th grade at age 10, music became a major interest in Betty’s life. She started with a traditional classical teacher and later learned improvisation. She followed this musical interest through high school and college, and in 1952 received a Bachelor of Music Education from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
After graduation, she “sprouted her wings” and came west. She had gotten a taste of Colorado when the family came west for her sister’s graduation from C.U. Like many such transplants, she had fallen in love with the beauty of Colorado. During her first summer here, she got a waitress job at a dude ranch in Estes Park.
That fall she took a short trip to Illinois and arrived back in Colorado in October after the school year had already started. She luckily found an opening but as a librarian in an elementary school in Arvada. (She said she didn’t even know what the Dewey decimal system was.) At the end of the year, she decided to go into general elementary teaching rather than strictly music so she needed some additional classes. One year later in 1954, she received her Master of Elementary Education from C.U. and the following fall was hired as a 1st-grade teacher in the Denver Public Schools.
Five years later she met and became enamored with a young optometrist, Dr. Lee Taylor, who had set up his practice in Lakewood 3 years prior to their meeting. The timing was right, as was Lee’s sense of humor. In 1960 they tied the knot and began their future together. Three years later they found a beautiful vacant lot in Lakewood with a view of the mountains. Betty’s brother-in-law, Oluf Nielsen, an architect and husband of Betty’s sister Barbara designed and engineered a contemporary house for them. They moved into the house in August of 1963. Meanwhile, the family had expanded. Bradley was born in 1961. Gregory in 1963 – a few months before the house was completed – a busy time for all!
But that of course is not the end of the story. While raising her two boys, she continued her musical journey acquiring a banjo and later a guitar. She learned the classical guitar and continued playing the piano, keeping up with current popular tunes of the 60's, 70’s, and beyond while learning some advanced classical music including pieces by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Gershwin. She also taught Greg his first year or so of piano lessons and continued to guide and inspire him and teach him improvisation.
But music was not Betty’s only interest. She beautified the family home by planting all sorts of flowers, landscaping, and got Lee to help her plant trees. She planned the family vacations, went ice skating, skiing (much of it in Vail after the family purchased a condominium there), swimming, and hiking. The places she traveled to included New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, several mid-west, eastern, and southeastern US states, and cruises to Alaska, the Mississippi river, and the Caribbean.
She always reached out to her neighbors and helped people in many ways. She also involved herself in many ‘sacrificial’ activities such as creating Halloween and play costumes, acting as a “pet caretaker” (for 2 dogs and 2 cats!), house painting, mowing and watering the front lawn, was a cub scouts “den mother”, cooking wonderful meals, and keeping up with housework and so many other needs.
Once Brad and Greg reached high school age, Betty went back to work, first as a private piano teacher, then as a public school teacher, and finally as a legal secretary. She also kept active in music playing piano for the vocal group “La Boca”, playing as a duo with vocalist Linda Kundert, and also directed and arranged music for Harpin’ Harmonicas and the West Wind Harmonica Band.
In 1988, Brad suffered a debilitating injury from a motocross accident which paralyzed him from the neck down. Amazingly, he worked himself into an independent living situation in Greeley.
Betty and Lee would drive from Lakewood to Greeley almost every week-end to visit Brad and help with some of his practical needs.
Betty continued to be very active until about 2018 when she started to suffer from some type of dementia (most likely Alzheimer's). By this time she had also started to lose her hearing and her eyesight and was unable to enjoy music or reading. By 2023, the family had to make the difficult decision to place her in Peak Gardens assisted living facility in Lakewood. The staff and the residents loved her as she was so kind and sweet.
Betty embarked on her biggest journey ever – to the next life on January 10, 2024 at the age of 93 having lived quite an amazing life.
She is survived by her husband Lee, her two sons Brad and Greg, daughter-in-law Donna Taylor, brother Paul Rauch, various nieces and nephews, and many friends. We will all miss her so very much.

Wynn Eakins - January 11, 1954 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Wheat Ridge)
Obituary Preview: Wynn Eakins, 69, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Arvada, Colorado on January 1, 2024.
Wynn was born on January 11, 1954 in Pittsburgh, PA to Benjamin Wynn and Nancy Johnson Eakins. He grew up as the middle child of three siblings in a military family, which meant they moved every few years throughout his childhood. Wynn grew up in such varied locations as the Philippines, Los Angeles, San Antonio, and the Washington DC area. He excelled in school but loved playing sports above all else, especially soccer, which he played into his forties. The Eakins family ended up settling in Boulder, Colorado, where Wynn began his undergrad studies at the University of Colorado. He went on to study at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, where he discovered his love for geology, and Ft. Lewis College in Durango, where he received his Bachelor of Science.
Wynn began his career as a coal geologist working for ARCO in the midwest, John T. Boyd Company in Arizona and Canada, and the Colorado Geological Survey. Wynn later attended Colorado School of Mines and earned a masters degree in Hydrogeology. During this time he transitioned from working as a coal geologist to specializing in environmental and waste management. He worked for the Colorado Health Department inspecting BLM landfills, and for Wastren and AWS supporting the closure of Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant. In 2005 he contracted as a site assessment specialist for CH2M Hill, working with FEMA in New Orleans during the recovery from Hurricane Katrina. In 2006 Wynn started working for Cordilleran Compliance (later, Olssen Associates) performing environmental compliance assessments for drill sites. Most recently, he saw himself contracting for FEMA again during the recovery from the disastrous September 2013 floods in northern Colorado.
Wynn was married to the love of his life for 42 years. He met Vicki Allen in 1976 when both were members of the Fiddlesteppers square dance club. They were married on March 27th, 1981 and moved into their family home in Arvada later that same year. In 1987 they were blessed with the birth of their son Gregory Michael. Wynn was an enthusiastic father, spending much of his spare time coaching his son’s sports teams, involving himself in Greg’s Cub Scouts and marching band, and taking him on father/son adventures such as hikes, bike rides, and a special trip to Miami to watch the Broncos win the Super Bowl in 1999.
Wynn loved traveling and spending time outdoors, often documenting his trips with scrapbooks and albums. Some of his favorites were a week-long pack trip through the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico in 1966, and a family houseboat trip on Lake Powell in 1993. He was a history buff who visited the east coast several times to tour historic sites, such as Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields. Closer to home he was an experienced outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, skiing, and backpacking in the Colorado mountains.
Wynn was fortunate to live near many extended family members in the Denver/Boulder area. Themed parties, picnics, and get togethers were a frequent occurrence, and Wynn loved hosting a huge Fourth of July party for many years. He was also famous for his quirky sense of humor, prominently displayed in the Eakins family Christmas letters which were a perennial favorite for many adoring readers.
Throughout his adult life Wynn was passionate about many things. He was a sports junkie, and was a dedicated fan of the Colorado Rockies, college sports, and golf. He was also very invested in current events and politics, regularly tuning in to cable news and late night talk shows. He was very strong in his Christian faith, having been raised Methodist and converted to Catholicism. And whether comfortable at home in his favorite recliner or driving hundreds of miles between job sites, he loved to listen to country music.
During the past decade Wynn dealt with numerous physical and medical ailments. He was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease which necessitated changes in his treatment for bipolar disorder, and he was never able to regain a stable quality of life. Frequent medication changes led to manic and depressed episodes, powerful side effects that reduced his mobility and cognitive function, and regular hospitalizations. In spite of this, for the last three years he very much enjoyed being “Pop” to his first granddaughter, spending time with close family and friends, and reminiscing about all of his life experiences. He would often say that he had had a wonderful life.
Wynn is survived by his wife Vicki, son Greg (Stephanie), granddaughter Harper, sister Mary Seppo (Paul), uncle Jim Johnson, sisters-in-law Cynthia Zwart (Boyd) and Kathy Breheny (Joe), along with many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jim, sister-in-law Sunny Allen, and brother-in-law Mike Allen. A service honoring Wynn’s life is scheduled for 10:30am January 25th, 2024 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 12735 W 58th Ave Arvada, CO 80002. The mass will be preceded by a rosary starting at 10:00am for those who wish to join, and followed by a reception in the church hall. If you are unable to join in person, the service will be streamed online. Please contact the family for details. If you are unable to join in person, the service will be streamed online at https://youtube.com/live/Nbwtpw3QOaM?feature=share
If you wish to honor Wynn, donations in his name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

Lois Burrell - June 14, 1930 - December 31, 2023

Departed: 12/31/2023 (Wheat Ridge)
Obituary Preview: On the morning of New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2023, Lois Burrell died peacefully at the age of 93. Lois lived in her beloved chosen town of Brighton, Colorado for 49 years and remained independent at her home until the last.
And an independent woman she was! Born in 1930 in Hampton, Virginia, she graduated from high school and went off to college at 16 years old, despite, as a Black girl, having to spend hours in the library to compensate for the out-dated and scarce books at her school. When, at age 22, Lois graduated with her master’s degree from the Indiana School of Social work, she was the only black female in her class. She spent her career as a medical social worker, helping others obtain what they needed as they navigated the health care system.
Lois, and her husband Ernest Burrell, fell in love with Colorado on a vacation, and moved to Denver in 1962 with their little 4-year-old daughter, Pameela. Lois worked at Denver General hospital for the rest of her career. Lois and Ernest fulfilled their dream of a rural home when they moved to Brighton in 1972 and it was there that Lois found her home and her true calling.
In the mid-1990’s, Lois, retired and widowed, with Pameela grown, discovered storytelling and fell in love with it. In 1995, she became a lifelong member of Rocky Mountain Storytelling and a professional storyteller. Lois thrived! She told folktales, biographies, myths, pioneer tales of Colorado, and dearest to her heart, African and African-American folktales and slave stories. She told throughout the Rocky Mountain region and traveled twice to Taiwan to tell to thousands of young people in schools. She was also a member of the Traveling Rainbow Tellers, a multicultural group of four women who enlightened and entertained throughout several states, and had a whole lot of fun doing it. At 91, after six years retired from professional telling, she was asked to tell at the Anythink Library in Brighton. She arrived with no prepared set, just a two-page list of story titles she could choose from to suit her audience. And suit her audience she did! They laughed, cried, learned, and marveled. Because it was, and Lois was, indeed a marvel!
Lois taught aerobics at the Brighton Senior Center from her retirement until she was 85. She was truly engaged in her community, and was a good friend to her rural neighbors, old and new, throughout her 49 years in Brighton. Lois received many awards as a testament to her community engagement, including Brighton’s Outstanding Senior Award, the AARP National Community Senior Award, the Norwest Bank Red Sweater Award, and the Denver Urban Spectrum Community Person of the Month Award. Throughout her life, Lois had a deep and abiding faith in God, which gave her a comforting peace and saw her through many hardships. Lois was from a small family and the only child of an amazing mother who was a tireless activist and brilliant teacher. She herself was the mother of an only child, her beautiful and talented daughter Pameela. Both preceded Lois in death. Lois requested no services. Please say a prayer, or a wish, or a good-bye for Lois. Or better yet, tell your own story. She would love that!

Daniel and Kristine spent several years in Boulder and Florida and eventually moved back to Colorado, where they settled in the Denver metro area. Daniel and Kristine were married for 29 years.
Daniel was a proud Irishman; his vacation to Ireland for his 50th birthday was one of the highlights of his life (a whole country full of Danny Kellys). He loved all sports and was an avid golfer. He was checking his status on fantasy football to the very end. He will be remembered for his big heart that he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them — and if you knew him, you knew it. His great sense of humor, gregarious laugh, and smile will be missed by all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online. It usually includes a brief account of the deceased's life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and may also include a request for charitable donations in their memory.

How is an obituary different from a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, often without much detail, whereas an obituary provides a more comprehensive tribute, including biographical details, family member names, and accomplishments of the deceased.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. Sometimes, a newspaper staff writer or a professional obituary writer is enlisted to help craft a more elaborate tribute.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life and career, information about the surviving family members, details for the service, and any preferred charities for donations.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

An obituary is usually published within a few days after a death, though the timeline can vary depending on the publishing medium and the family's wishes. Some families may choose to wait longer to gather information and reflect on the life of their loved one.

What makes a good obituary?

A good obituary respectfully celebrates the life of the deceased, provides key information for those who may want to attend services, and captures the essence of their personality or life achievements in a way that is meaningful to readers.

Can an obituary be too long?

While there is no set length for an obituary, it should be concise enough to hold the reader's attention while providing enough detail to honor the deceased. Length may also be determined by the costs associated with the publishing medium.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Many newspapers and online platforms charge a fee to publish an obituary, which can vary based on length and included photographs. Some community bulletins, social media, and certain websites may offer free or lower-cost options.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and is not required. Some families prefer to include it for clarity or medical reasons, while others may choose to keep this information private.

What if I make a mistake in the obituary?

If a mistake is identified, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. Most publications are understanding and accommodating in these situations as they are aware of the sensitive nature of obituaries.

How to find someone's obituary?

You can find obituaries by searching online newspaper archives, visiting funeral home websites, using specialized obituary search engines, or checking social media pages where family members might have shared the information.

Is it appropriate to include a photo in an obituary?

Yes, including a photo can add a personal touch to an obituary, making it more engaging and helping readers to connect with the memory of the deceased. The most common choice is a recent and respectful portrait.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Check the publication's guidelines for submitting obituaries, which often include preferred methods of submission, format requirements, and deadline information. Most newspapers allow submissions via email or through their website's obituary submission form.

Is it acceptable to add humor to an obituary?

Yes, if it reflects the personality of the deceased and is done tactfully. Humor can be a way to celebrate the unique quirks and joy the individual brought to life, but it should be appropriate and respectful.

What if I don't want to publish an obituary?

There is no obligation to publish an obituary. However, it can be a way to inform friends and the community of the person's passing and provide details of any services. Some families choose private ways to commemorate their loved one's life instead.

How do cultural differences affect obituaries?

Cultural norms and traditions can influence how an obituary is written and what information is included. Respecting the customs and values of the deceased and their family is important, and details may vary accordingly.

Can obituaries be posted online only?

Yes, in the digital age, many opt to publish obituaries exclusively online, either through online memorial sites, social media platforms, or the digital counterparts of traditional newspapers.

What to do if a loved one's obituary is published without permission?

In such cases, contacting the publisher as soon as possible is advised. Discuss the situation and request the removal or editing of the obituary if it was published without the consent or knowledge of the family.

How do memorials or tributes differ from obituaries?

Memorials and tributes are often more personalized and elaborate than obituaries. They may include longer anecdotes, personal stories, or a collection of memories from various friends and family members, while obituaries tend to be more formal and biographical.

What can I do if I cannot afford to publish an obituary?

If cost is a concern, explore free or low-cost platforms online, ask about community bulletin options, or reach out to local charitable organizations that might assist you in getting the word out in an affordable way.

Should children and grandchildren be mentioned in the obituary?

Yes, if you wish to acknowledge them. It is common to include the names of the immediate family members including children, grandchildren, and sometimes even great-grandchildren, to recognize the familial lineage and those left to honor the deceased's memory.
