Losing a mother, grandmother and friend has taught us so much about life. It taught us the meaning of life, what real love really is. They say a mother and her children is one of the closest relationships in the world. Losing that relationship taught us how capable we were of loving, losing and feeling pain. You taught us the meaning of love, As a mother you loved us unconditionally, no matter what. In Our Hearts
We thought of you today. But that is nothing new We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.
Now all we have memories.
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake.
With which we’ll never part.
God has you in his keeping.
We have you in our heart. We love you mom, may you rest in paradise!

James Alan Carney - April 10, 1948 - June 25, 2023

Departed: 06/25/2023 (Denver)
Obituary Preview: With great sadness, we announce that James "Jim" Carney passed away from Alzheimer's Disease on June 25, 2023 at the age of 75. The world has lost a devoted dad, husband, brother, uncle, and friend. We will miss his generous spirit, sense of humor, and perfect smile more than words can say.
Jim is survived by his wife of 46 years, BJ Croall; his children Evan (Ashley) and Katie (Dan); his grandchildren Aleca, Declan, and Wilder; his brother Michael Carney; and his sisters Carol Clark and Cindy Shnaider. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chuck and Dorothy Carney; and his brother Charles Carney.
Jim was born in Rochester, Minnesota and grew up in Marion, Iowa, graduating from Iowa State with a degree in architecture in 1971. After working in Dallas for a couple of years, he packed up and arrived in Denver on January 1, 1973 without a job or an apartment. Within his first week in Denver, he’d secured both. He met his wife BJ in 1974 on a group outing to Casa Bonita and then settled down in Denver for good.
Jim's passion for engineering and problem-solving extended beyond his career as an architect; no project was too big or too small for him. Whether redesigning an entire kitchen or hanging a backyard swing, he tackled every task with the same enthusiasm. He had a hand in transforming nearly every room in the family house and frequently helped Katie and Evan with projects at their homes.
Along with working on his home projects, Jim loved to bring his family and friends together for a meal. He prepared many memorable dinners with an eclectic combination of dishes, all in the spirit of making everyone feel welcome. Dessert was mandatory, as long as there was coffee to go along with it—he believed you couldn’t have one without the other.
Jim also loved being outside. In his younger years, he climbed multiple 14ers and enjoyed camping and exploring Colorado. After retiring, he walked five miles a day without fail, and loved driving to check out the view on top of Lookout Mountain. The peace and inspiration he found in nature is something that he passed on to Evan and Katie.
Sports played a big role in Jim's early life, with football, track, and wrestling keeping him busy in high school. He later replaced competitive sports with competitive cribbage games. He tracked the results of thousands of cribbage games between himself and BJ, always trying to puzzle out how BJ won more often. But with every loss came a joke, a laugh, and a reminder that time spent together was the biggest prize.

Obituaries serve as a way to publicly announce a person's passing and provide details about the upcoming funeral or memorial service.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary is important because it formally acknowledges the loss of a community member, allows people to pay their respects, and informs friends and the broader community of the person's death. It also provides details for those who may wish to attend the funeral or memorial service and/or send condolences to the family.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral director or an assigned staff member at the newspaper may assist or write it based on information provided by the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

Typical information in an obituary includes the full name of the deceased, their dates of birth and death, a brief account of their life, family members, an overview of their career, their educational background, achievements, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

How is an obituary different from a eulogy?

An obituary is a written announcement of someone's death with biographical details, intended for the public. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech given during a funeral service that offers praise and celebrates the life of the person who passed away.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is not necessary and is entirely at the discretion of the family. Some may choose to include this information for transparency or awareness, while others may prefer to keep it private.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a short announcement of someone's passing, often listing just the name, date of death, and details about the funeral service. An obituary is more detailed and includes a biography of the deceased.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are most commonly published in local newspapers, on the newspapers' websites, and on dedicated online obituary platforms. Some are also shared through social media and community forums.

Are there different types of obituaries?

Yes, there are typically two types of obituaries: a standard obituary that covers the factual information and biographical details of the deceased, and a personalized obituary, which may include personal anecdotes, tributes, and messages from loved ones.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary, but most are concise, typically ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. The length may depend on the allotted space in the publication and the cost, as some newspapers charge by the word or line.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should ideally be published a few days after the death, to allow enough time for the community to be informed and make arrangements to attend the services or send their condolences.

Can an obituary be published online only?

Yes, an obituary can be published online only. This option might be chosen due to the immediacy of digital platforms, wider reach, and sometimes to avoid the costs associated with print publication.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

You should avoid including overly personal details that might compromise the privacy of the deceased or their family, such as home address, financial information, or anything that could be deemed insensitive or inappropriate.

Can a family choose not to publish an obituary?

Yes, publishing an obituary is a personal choice, and the family can decide not to publish one if they prefer privacy or for any other reason.

How do you choose a photo for an obituary?

The photo chosen for an obituary should be a recent and clear image of the deceased that reflects how they are most fondly remembered. It's often a headshot with a pleasant expression.

Is it possible to correct an obituary after it has been published?

It may be possible to correct an obituary after publication, especially online. For printed obituaries, any corrections will likely be limited to future editions of the newspaper. It's important to proofread the text before submission to avoid errors.

Should an obituary mention the deceased's pets?

Including a mention of the deceased's pets can be a touching detail, as pets often play a significant role in a person's life. However, this is discretionary, and the inclusion should reflect the personality and preferences of the deceased or their family.

Can people contribute memories or stories to be included in an obituary?

Yes, family members and friends can contribute memories or stories, which can provide a richer and more personalized account of the deceased's life. This collaborative approach can be especially meaningful.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication, its circulation, the length of the obituary, and whether a photograph is included. Online obituaries may be less expensive or even free on some platforms.

How can an obituary reflect the personality of the deceased?

An obituary can reflect the personality of the deceased through the tone of the writing, the inclusion of personal anecdotes, quotes, and the sharing of significant life stories. Using language that the person loved, or incorporating their humor can also capture their essence.

Are there alternatives to traditional obituaries?

Yes, alternatives to traditional obituaries include video or audio tributes, social media posts, and online memorial pages that allow for interactive elements such as photo galleries, timelines, and guestbooks for condolences.
