Milton Johnson was born in Temple, Texas (Bell County) in 1949.  He was the baby of the family- the youngest of 16 children. When he was a toddler his family moved to Arizona. They first settled in Casa Grande and later moved to Phoenix, where Milt would grow up.
He attended Palmdale Elementary School and Percy Julian Middle School in the Roosevelt District. He then went on to attend South Mountain High School, where he was an outstanding four-year letterman in athletics. His passion was football and track and field. Milt held the school record for shot put for 22 years, until it was later broken by his son Erik. In 1967, Milt’s senior year, his track team won the Arizona State Championship. The school trophy is displayed in his home.
Milt then went on to accept a scholarship to play football at Phoenix College from 1967-68. While at PC, his team played for the National Junior College title in Savannah, GA. In high school and at PC, he was named to state and national All-Star teams. He then went on to play football at Idaho State University and then with the Phoenix Blazers (a semi-professional football team). After three seasons with the Blazers, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings for a season in the NFL. Family
In 1968 Milt met the true love of his life, Krista Errickson, while both were students at Phoenix College. They went on to get married in Phoenix in 1969 and welcomed their first child, a son, Milton Jr. later that year. In 1971 their son Erik was born.  In 1980 Krista and Milt adopted their beloved daughter Alysa. As big and tough as Milt was, he was always wrapped around her finger. They were inseparable. She was a Daddy's Girl. A few years later reuniting with the family was Krista's daughter Tracy.
Milt worked for the Smitty’s grocery chain for over 20 years as a stocker and then a truck driver. Krista, Milt Jr, Erik and Tracy also worked for Smitty’s. It was a family affair. He later drove a big rig for Southwest Freeport.
He continued to be an avid sports fan throughout his years. When his kids were young he coached them in football and track. He also coached many of his nephews and neighbor kids throughout the years.  He was a role model and father figure to many. Big Milt was admired and looked up to by many in his community. He continued to support his family throughout his years. He never missed their precious moments: sporting events, graduations, weddings, birth of grandkids and great grandkids. Legacy
Milt had a big heart. He and Krista were always willing to help others in need. Their house was always open when you needed a friend, or a place to stay. To his kids and many of his nephews and nieces he was a father figure, a role model, and a hero.
He was a great storyteller and was always making someone laugh. He so loved his brothers and sisters and loved spending time with them whenever he could, sometimes until the sun came up the next day. They were always protective of their ‘baby brother’.
He had many lifelong friends, from his football days, jobs, coaching and community. Everyone knew “Big Milt”. In his last days, he had many visitors from far and wide, who came to reminisce with him and recount the memories they had made together. Milt and Krista enjoyed traveling and sailing and spending time with friends and family. The most fulfilling day of his life was Memorial Day of 2014. He committed his life to Christ and is now in the presence of the Lord for eternity

Cory Dewayne Black - March 20, 1976 - May 27, 2021

Departed: 05/27/2021 (Tempe)
Obituary Preview: Once upon a time there lived a lady named Tommesine Black who worked very hard to take care of her children. She had three daughters Jamie, Francine, and Anita, and two sons Lee and Roger. THey lived in a small city in Arizona. Ten years after Roger was born, she and James Black gave birth to Cory Dewayne Black, on March 20, 1976. He became the center of the family's attention, but not for long, soon after he shared that attention with his younger sister Brandi. They welcomed and enjoyed the title of baby brother and sister, and they wore it well. His family worshiped the Lord at Grace Memorial C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of late Pastor William Thompson.
Cory received his education from the Chandler School District. He was a rambunctious child who enjoyed providing humor to lighten the classroom stress. He gladly took on the role of being protector for his younger sister and beloved nephew Theotis Akins, as he would boldly stand up for them. He enjoyed cuddling with his sister Jamie, arm wrestling Francine and talking to Anita. His brother Roger had a Pitbull dog, and that was the start of his love for Pitbulls. His brother Lee kept a close watch over his baby brother while their mother worked a night shift to provide one of Cory's favorites, food. Cory and his nephews Theotis and Shean Akins, who were just a few years younger than him, and on occasions his cousin Lamont Draper looked forward to the many outings with his brother in-law, who he argued with friends he was his brother, not understanding Bill was married to his sister. While Cory was married to Tonya Woods, he loved and bonded with her children.
Cory loved animals, model and remote control cars, and was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys football team. He was gifted with his hands, and many admired his drawings, he could assemble things very quickly, and he was convinced he grilled the best food, many enjoyed. Cory earned a plumbing certificate, he worked as a plumber and various occupations. At a young age his health presented challenges.
Cory loved his nieces and nephews and referred to them as, "Uncle Babies." His childhood friends were like brothers, to name a few, Eben Vargas, Tyrone Hardy, Ramone Velasquez, Baltazar (Vito) Jass III, and Toni Cowan, they will forever remember him as a loyal and trusted friend. Cory "Budda," "Poojella" as he was lovingly called since he was a child. He could not remember or pronounce all of his siblings names, so he would call his brothers "Budda" and his sister's "sista". He was given the name "Poojella" because of his love for peanut butter and jelly. On May 27, 2021 ended his journey on earth leaving to cherish his memories, his mother, Mother Tommesine Black and his father James Black, sisters Jamie, Anita, Francine (Willie, "Bill") and Brandi, his brothers Lee Jr. and Roger, 14 nieces and nephews and 17 great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends, and his Pitbull "Poojella." Cory will forever live in the hearts of those whose lives he touched, and forever be his mother's baby and his siblings baby brother, who all live in a small city in Arizona. The End Came Too Soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of someone, typically published in newspapers and online platforms. It often includes a brief summary of their life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and can also contain a message of remembrance from the family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is usually more detailed and written in a narrative style, including biographical details, family information and personal anecdotes. A death notice, by contrast, is generally shorter and strictly factual, noting the person's passing and providing funeral information.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary is typically written by a close family member, a friend, or the funeral home handling the arrangements. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify the community of a person's passing, celebrate their life, convey important funeral or memorial service information, and provide a historical record for future generations.

What information is traditionally included in an obituary?

Traditional obituaries usually include the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, a brief summary of their life, career, and passions, surviving family members, information about the funeral or memorial service, and possibly a photograph.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the publication's obituary department for submission guidelines, including deadlines, length restrictions, and costs. Many newspapers also provide online forms for easier submission.

Are obituaries published only in newspapers?

No, obituaries are also often published online on various platforms such as social media, online memorial sites, and the websites of funeral homes. Some families also choose to send obituaries directly through emails or newsletters.

How long do newspapers keep obituaries archived?

Archive times can vary widely from paper to paper, with some keeping obituaries available for a few weeks to several months online, while others may maintain archives that span years or decades, especially in digital form.

Can I include personal stories or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely. Personal stories or anecdotes that reflect the character and life of the deceased can be a beautiful addition to an obituary, providing a more intimate and heartfelt tribute to their memory.
