Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often including a brief biography of their life, details about the funeral or memorial service, and any requested charitable donations in lieu of flowers. It serves as a public announcement in newspapers or online platforms and also helps to memorialize the deceased.

What is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, date of birth and death, a summary of their life's achievements, details about their family, information about the funeral or memorial service, and often a special message or poem. Some obituaries may also include a photo.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by close family members or friends of the deceased. However, funeral home staff or professional writers can also be tasked with composing an obituary, especially if the family desires a particularly eloquent or detailed account.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are typically published within a week of the death to allow friends and extended family to be aware of the funeral arrangements and pay their respects. However, the timing can vary based on the publication schedules of newspapers and the wishes of the family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed remembrance that includes biographical information, personal stories, and achievements of the deceased. A death notice, on the other hand, is a short, factual notice of the death and service information, typically without the additional biographical details found in an obituary.

Can an obituary be published in multiple locations?

Yes, obituaries can be and often are published in multiple newspapers, both local and in other areas where the deceased may have lived or been known. They can also be shared on online platforms, including social media and memorial websites.

What if the family prefers not to publish an obituary?

If a family chooses not to publish an obituary for personal reasons, that is entirely their right. Some families may opt for private funeral services or may simply wish to inform others of the death through personal communication rather than public announcements.

No, there are no legal requirements to publish an obituary. It is entirely a personal choice for the family or the executor of the deceased's estate.

How much does it usually cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary widely depending on the newspaper or platform. Some newspapers charge by word count or length, while others have a flat fee. Online obituaries can sometimes be published for free or at a lower cost than print versions.

Can anyone submit an obituary to a newspaper?

While typically a family member or funeral home submits an obituary, newspapers usually accept submissions from anyone. However, they may require proof of death and verification from the family or funeral home to prevent fraudulent submissions.

How is an obituary verified?

Newspapers and online platforms often require a copy of the death certificate or confirmation from a funeral home to verify the authenticity of an obituary submission before publication.

What should you do if you find an error in an obituary?

If an error is found in an obituary, you should contact the newspaper or website that published it as soon as possible. They typically have procedures in place to correct and republish the obituary with accurate information.

Is it appropriate to include a cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice and is not required. Some families may choose to include this information, especially if it pertains to a public interest or educational cause, such as raising awareness for an illness. Others may prefer to keep this information private.

How can an obituary be personalized?

An obituary can be personalized by including anecdotes, personal stories, quotes, or poems that reflect the deceased's personality and values. Sharing their passions, hobbies, and the impact they had on others also adds a personal touch.

Is it appropriate to add humor to an obituary?

If it suits the personality of the deceased and the family's wishes, humor can be included in an obituary. It is important to ensure that any humor is respectful and appropriate for a public announcement of death.

Can obituaries be updated or changed after publication?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be changed, which is why accuracy is so important. Online obituaries, however, can often be updated after initial publication. Any changes should be managed through the publishing platform or website.

Are obituaries necessary for a memorial service?

While obituaries can be helpful in informing people about a memorial service, they are not a requirement for holding one. Communication about the service can be shared by other means, like personal notices or digital communications.

What should be considered when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, consider the tone you wish to convey, the most significant life achievements of the deceased, the desired length, and any cultural or religious customs to be respected. It is also important to include key service information for those wishing to pay their respects.

What is the etiquette for sending condolences after reading an obituary?

After reading an obituary, sending condolences through a sympathy card, flowers, or a charitable donation as directed in the obituary is customary. Personal messages of support to the family can also be comforting during their time of loss.

How can you find an old obituary?

Old obituaries can be found through a variety of sources, including newspaper archives, online databases, library collections, or heritage and genealogical websites. Some funeral homes also keep archives of the obituaries they have provided services for.

Can obituaries include requests for charitable donations?
