BV Martin was born February 24, 1929 in the small town of Matador Tx. Growing up as one of the Bakers Dozen, he always claimed they ran out of names by the time he came along. He grew up in a wild and rough time, so by the time he and his brother could join the military. They were prepared for the Marine Corps. Signed up and served proudly during the Korean War. After serving bravely and honorably BV worked many jobs- no job was too small or to big. He’s picked cotton, dug ditches all the way to being the VP of a bank in Clovis NM. All these experiences led him to having a strong work ethic and ultimately being In business for himself as a building contractor.
But BV’s pride and joy, without question, is his family. BV was a father who never differentiated between his own children and his step children. He was a very proud father, grandfather & great grandfather. The ultimate love of his life Margie Pearl (as he always called her) who has been by his side since they met in 1978. BV will be remembered for many things to many people since he loved to tell his stories and could recall the names of all the people he interacted with over the years but the one thing we all will truly miss is our annual birthday song-he took great pleasure in being the first to call and sing his special song. Because of his strong faith in Jesus - it’s comforting to know that BV has been re-united in Heaven with family and friends that have gone before him and reassuring for us as Christian’s that we will all be together again one day. “No person was ever honored for What he received. Honor has been The reward for what he gave” -Calvin Coolidge

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It serves as a notice to the community and often includes a brief summary of the deceased's life story, achievements, information about the funeral service, and sometimes a message of remembrance from the family.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary is more detailed and personal than a death notice, which is a shorter, factual announcement of someone’s passing. Death notices usually only contain information about the time and place of the funeral or memorial service, and perhaps some basic information about the deceased, while obituaries may include a more extensive biography, family details, and special messages.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by a family member of the deceased, but they can also be composed by a funeral director, close friend, or by journalists, particularly for public figures or celebrities.

What kind of information is usually included in an obituary?

Obituaries generally include the name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life story, surviving family members, information about the funeral or memorial services, and possible requests for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary when someone dies?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary when someone dies. However, it is a common practice used to inform the community and honor the deceased’s memory.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local newspapers. Nowadays, they can also be found on various online memorial sites, social media, funeral home websites, and even print materials like funeral programs or prayer cards.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a few days to a week after a person's death, allowing time for the family to gather and confirm information and for the funeral home to make arrangements. Timing is often determined by the date of the funeral or memorial service.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral?

Yes, an obituary can be published after the funeral, especially if the individual’s death was sudden or the family needed more time to create a fitting tribute. Though it’s more common beforehand, delayed obituaries can still notify distant friends or associates and serve as a public memorial.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary may vary, ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs, based on the publication’s guidelines, the life story of the deceased, and the family’s wishes. In newspapers, length may also be influenced by the cost, as many charge by the word or inch.

How can I write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, focus on summarizing the deceased’s life story, highlighting their personality traits, accomplishments, relationships, and impact on others. Share anecdotes or quotes that reflect their spirit and the essence of who they were. Balance the emotional content with the necessary factual details.

Is it appropriate to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families choose to include this information to provide closure or to bring awareness to certain health issues or diseases. However, it is not required, and some prefer to keep this detail private.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries, especially in online formats and modern print newspapers. A recent picture of the deceased, or one that is particularly representative of their life, is often chosen by the family.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication and length of the obituary. Newspapers often charge by line, word, or column inch, while many online platforms offer free or low-cost options.

Should the obituary mention predeceased and surviving family members?

Yes, it is customary to list both predeceased and surviving family members to acknowledge the deceased's close personal relations and to inform readers of who is mourning the loss. This can include immediate family and sometimes extended family members or close friends considered as family.

Can obituaries include requests for charitable donations?

Absolutely. It's common for obituaries to include a request for charitable donations in memory of the deceased, often referred to as "in lieu of flowers." This can be to a charity that was significant to the person or to support a cause that is related to their death.

How do you choose a meaningful quote or saying for an obituary?

To choose a meaningful quote or saying, reflect on the deceased's beliefs, values, and personality. Consider selecting a quote from their favorite author, public figure, religious text, or even a phrase they often used themselves. It should ideally resonate with their life’s philosophy or how they’ll be remembered.

Are there different cultural or religious practices that influence obituaries?

Yes, cultural and religious customs can greatly influence the content and style of an obituary. Certain cultures or religions may have specific traditions or requirements that should be honored, from mentioning religious services to the inclusion of specific symbols or phrases. It’s best to respect and reflect such traditions in the obituary.

What are the most common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, common mistakes to avoid include factual errors, spelling mistakes, omitting important family members, and failing to double-check service times and locations. Be also mindful not to disclose overly personal information that could cause family distress or increase the risk of fraud.

Is there support available for those who find it challenging to write an obituary?

Yes, for those who need help writing an obituary, many funeral homes offer assistance and templates. Professional obituary writers and editors can also provide services that respect the tone and wishes of the family.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

While print obituaries cannot be changed after publication, most online obituaries can be updated or corrected. Some newspapers might also allow corrections in subsequent issues if errors are spotted or important details were accidentally omitted.

How do we handle an obituary if the deceased had a complicated or contentious life?

In the case of someone with a complicated or contentious life, the obituary can focus on neutral details like the person’s career, passions, talents, or contributions to the community. It is generally advised to avoid airing grievances or controversial details out of respect for both the deceased and the readers.
