Elizabeth R Null - May 23, 1937 - July 11, 2020

Departed: 07/11/2020 (Smithville)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth was born on May 23, 1937 in Grassyville, Texas, to Emil Reimers of Giddings, Texas and Alma Franz of Paige, Texas. Elizabeth was of German and Wendish heritage. She was the youngest of 4 girls, losing her sister, Gladys, in infancy. Her oldest sister by 6 years is Joan Smelser of Austin, Texas, and her sister by 4 years was Joyce Schultz, who preceded her in the Lord’s grace in 2019. When Elizabeth was 4, Alma and Emil moved their family to begin farming in Smithville, Texas. Their home was adjacent to the farm of her mother’s sister and brother in law, Florence and Howard Burns on FM 535. Her grandmother, Ganny, lived just up the road. Farming was not an easy life, but Elizabeth and her sisters helped as needed. The Reimers family became a vital part of the Smithville community, and active members of Grace Lutheran Church. Elizabeth attended Smithville High School, where she achieved the honors of Head Cheerleader and Miss Smithville High. After high school, she attended business school in Austin and was married at the young age of 19. She was blessed with 2 children, Leigh Ann the oldest, and Don the youngest. Her new family moved from Austin to Houston, where she worked as the administrative assistant for the sales department at Transcon Truck Lines for over 22 years. Elizabeth began a new chapter in her life after many years of battling and conquering cancer, and the collapse of the trucking industry which resulted in the end of her life-long career at Transcon. She was reacquainted with her high school sweetheart, Fred R. Null, in 1985. In their younger days they were known as Freddie Rae and Lizzy Mae. They were destined to be together, and were married in 1986. They enjoyed a loving marriage until Fred succumbed to cancer in 2014. The tragic loss of Fred was very difficult for Elizabeth to overcome, especially with her onset of dementia. Shortly after losing Fred, Elizabeth moved to Hempstead, Texas to live with her son, Don. She spent three happy years on his ranch, with her cow dogs, Red and Daisy, and her pet rooster, Fred Astaire. She fought against her ailments with everything she had, and leaned on her faith to stave off the memory stealing Alzheimer’s. She finally lost her courageous struggle on July 11, 2020, and peacefully, in the Lord’s grace, left us to join her parents, sisters Gladys and Joyce, and husband, Fred. Rejoicing in her memory are Elizabeth’s children and their spouses, Leigh Ann and Rob, Don and Paul, grandchildren Jason, wife Sam, and Ashley, Elizabeth’s sister, Joan and husband Aubrey, great grandchildren Avianna and Titan, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends. We will miss the blessings of Elizabeth’s joyous light and love until we are reunited again in heaven.

Tommy Earl Davis - October 17, 1939 - May 12, 2020

Departed: 05/12/2020 (Smithville)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Tommy Earl Davis, born October 15, 1939, passed peacefully on May 12, 2020.  He is survived by his wife, Beverly Davis; sister, Nona Gold; son, Tommy Davis and his wife, Susan Davis.  He was blessed with grandchildren Brian Davis and his wife Jessica; Michelle Boykin and her husband David; Jessica Davis and Amanda Davis.  Additional blessings came with great grandchildren Emma, Noah, Elijah, and Finnleigh Davis; Lauren and Luke Boykin.  Sadly, for our family, he will be joining his son Stephen Davis who preceded him in passing from this life.
The world is at loss to Heaven’s gain as those who knew Tommy can attest.  Tommy Davis was one of those rare individuals who spoke the truth even when it hurt.  He chose the correct path even when it was the hardest path to follow.  Tommy Davis lived by a set of rules that required actions to be just and fair.  He took up the fight to guard the weak and offered a helping hand to those who found themselves in trouble times.  May everyone celebrate the spark of life passed to each of us by his presence and know we are better thanks to the time spent with him on this earth.  Know that he is looking down as a protective angel whose actions while alive will guide us in the future.  Peace and tranquility in God’s merciful hands are his reward for the care he gave to all those he knew.  Peace and blessings fly with him as we celebrate the passing of a true man of action.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Davis family has requested that a mask be worn by anyone who will be attending the Private Memorial Servece for Tommy Davis.     Although not mandatory, it is best to be safe.  Thank you in advance for understanding.

Joyce Klutts - October 26, 1931 - April 12, 2020

Departed: 04/12/2020 (Smithville)
Obituary Preview: Hazel Joyce Klutts, age 88, of Smithville Texas, passed away peacefully Easter Sunday after a long battle with cancer. She was born October 26, 1931 in Burkett, Texas, to Jim Helms and Edna Boyles Helms. Joyce was preceded in death by her mother and father, her sister Betty Jean Helms, her husband of 54 years, Barney Carroll Klutts, her daughter, Vanita Joy Klutts, and her son, Jimmy Carroll Klutts. She is survived by son, Carlos Klutts and his wife, Cindy of Austin, three grandchildren; Tiffany Klutts Brumley of Austin, Brandt Klutts and his wife, Kim of Boerne, and Clayton Morgan Klutts and his wife Katherine of Austin. “Gran” is also survived by her ten great grandchildren; Buddy, Ellie, Wren and Mary Morgan Brumley of Austin, Brooks, Molly and Weston Klutts of Boerne, and Carter, Clayton and Charlie Klutts of Austin.
Joyce graduated from Burkett High School where she excelled in academics and basketball. After graduation, Joyce was swept off her feet by Barney Klutts, a decorated World War II Army Veteran who had recently returned from the Pacific Theater to Callahan County. They married and spent those early years farming and began their family with the birth of their first son, Carlos. The seven-year drought took its toll on the Klutts farm in the early 1950s. Joyce, with her strong will, determination to overcome adversity, devotion to Barney and strong faith headed for the Texas coast with Barney and new baby.  Barney worked for Phillips Petroleum in Old Ocean and they welcomed daughter, Vanita Joy in 1953.  Joyce delighted in raising her two little ones and making lifelong friends with the “Phillips Families”.  In 1958, they bought their first land in Fayette County.  Joyce once again packed her family and transitioned to ranching at West Point with Barney where they added Jimmy Carroll to their family in 1959.
For Joyce, each move was an opportunity to know, love and make lasting friends.  The selling of that ranch and a move to Smithville began a partnership between Barney and Joyce in real estate that spanned four decades.  Joyce, intelligent and ever ready to learn, got her Texas Real Estate Broker’s License and worked side-by-side with Barney growing their real estate company. She loved people and many of their buyers became lifelong friends.  She had contagious laughter, was a ready hostess and an amazing cook that could put together a sales contract and a chicken fried steak lunch at the same time in the blink of an eye. Having fun with family and friends was a priority in her life.  Her love for fishing with family and friends went hand in hand with her gift of cooking—she could catch‘em, clean’em, and cook‘em and it would be the best meal you’ve ever had.
Joyce had an ability to see good in everyone and was a good listener.  Her back door was always open and everyone always felt at home in her presence.  She was kind, generous and hardworking which was evident to all who knew her. She loved Smithville and Smithville loved her back. She had great pride and tremendous love for all her family and friends. She cherished her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends that were like family to her. She was a second mother for many of her children’s friends and she stayed in close contact with them throughout her life.  Joyce was a strong believer who kept what she called a walking prayer open for her loved ones.  She was an active member of the Smithville Church of Christ. She enjoyed her quilting ladies, sewing group, Hearts and Hands, Wednesday morning coffee group, and Thirsty Thursday supper group. Joyce spent many hours serving the community she loved as Board Member and President of the Smithville ISD School Board, Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem of the Smithville City Council, and Cemetery Improvement Committee. She enjoyed volunteering for the Smithville Chamber of Commerce and was named “Smithville’s Most Worthy Citizen”.  Her time spent on the Smithville Hospital Board was her love and she received great satisfaction working with the board in building the new Towers Nursing Home which opened last October.  She lovingly referenced it as Smithville’s five-star hotel. She left us making sure that we each felt the same love and peace that she did.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Texas Children’s Home, 13200 Crane Rd., Buda, TX 78610/512-243-1386.  Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, there will be a memorial service announced at a later date.

Jane Carolyn Bunte - February 13, 1953 - February 06, 2020

Departed: 02/06/2020 (Smithville)
Obituary Preview: Jane Carolyn Bratcher Bunte, 66, of Smithville, Texas, passed away Thursday morning, February 6, 2020. Though her passing was sudden and unexpected, her family cherishes the exciting, vibrant, and loving life that she lived.
Jane was born February 13, 1953 in Port Lavaca, Texas to Lillian and Ralph Bratcher where the family ran a local restaurant. She was the middle of their three children.
The family moved to Smithville when Jane was in the second grade. She graduated from Smithville High School in 1971. Even though she was a hometown girl, she traveled extensively in her adult years, working in faraway locations such as Hong Kong and the Philippines, and visiting family down in Australia.
Jane married Lester Rector in October 1972. They had two children, Laurie and Jeremy.
In 1983, she wed Galen Bunte, whom she would spend the next 36 years with. Along with her children and Galen's daughter, Andi, the household knew laughter, love, and adventure. She enjoyed family vacations and had many memorable summers heading to the beach and floating the Frio River in Concan with various family and friends.
She devoted her life to her family. She was known simply as “Nana” to her grandkids, and the love that she showered on them was unrivaled. She had an entire room in the house dedicated to their playtime and made sure that each one felt as much compassion as she could give. One was never given any less love than another. Her joy was evident in her smile and you could tell that she was living her best life when they were around.
Jane and her mother were very close. They spent nearly every Saturday going to yard sales, resale shops, and antique fairs looking for the best deals and fun finds. They'd also venture to Rockport to enjoy beaching, crabbing, and meeting the locals, often joined by her close friend Linda. On one of their last trips there, she had the pleasure to hold and release a live hummingbird during their annual birding fest. She loved little things like that.
She never met a stranger, and we can extend that by saying that she never met a child that she didn't show the upmost love and care to.
Jane also took much pride and satisfaction in throwing celebrations, be it a luau for her mother's birthday or Christmastime blowouts for the family — she spared no expense.
Overall, this wife, daughter, mother, sister, and friend was a special woman who will leave a tremendous legacy on those whose lives she touched. She was truly a blessing.
Jane is survived by her loving husband, Galen; children, Laurie and husband Erik McCowan, Andi and husband Tommy Oates, and Jeremy Rector; seven grandchildren, Jake Oates, Cody Spencer, Logan Rector, Colton Hancock, Luke Oates, Caston Rector, and Addison Oates; mother, Lillian Bratcher; brother, Steven and wife Denise Bratcher; as well as numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Bratcher; brother, Michael Bratcher; and mother-in-law, Thelma Bunte.
Family visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 15 at the Grace Lutheran Church annex in Smithville. Memorial services will begin directly after visitation at 3 p.m. with a meal following in the church annex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It serves as a notice to the community and often includes a brief summary of the deceased's life story, achievements, information about the funeral service, and sometimes a message of remembrance from the family.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary is more detailed and personal than a death notice, which is a shorter, factual announcement of someone’s passing. Death notices usually only contain information about the time and place of the funeral or memorial service, and perhaps some basic information about the deceased, while obituaries may include a more extensive biography, family details, and special messages.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by a family member of the deceased, but they can also be composed by a funeral director, close friend, or by journalists, particularly for public figures or celebrities.

What kind of information is usually included in an obituary?

Obituaries generally include the name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life story, surviving family members, information about the funeral or memorial services, and possible requests for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary when someone dies?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary when someone dies. However, it is a common practice used to inform the community and honor the deceased’s memory.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local newspapers. Nowadays, they can also be found on various online memorial sites, social media, funeral home websites, and even print materials like funeral programs or prayer cards.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a few days to a week after a person's death, allowing time for the family to gather and confirm information and for the funeral home to make arrangements. Timing is often determined by the date of the funeral or memorial service.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral?

Yes, an obituary can be published after the funeral, especially if the individual’s death was sudden or the family needed more time to create a fitting tribute. Though it’s more common beforehand, delayed obituaries can still notify distant friends or associates and serve as a public memorial.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary may vary, ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs, based on the publication’s guidelines, the life story of the deceased, and the family’s wishes. In newspapers, length may also be influenced by the cost, as many charge by the word or inch.

How can I write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, focus on summarizing the deceased’s life story, highlighting their personality traits, accomplishments, relationships, and impact on others. Share anecdotes or quotes that reflect their spirit and the essence of who they were. Balance the emotional content with the necessary factual details.

Is it appropriate to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families choose to include this information to provide closure or to bring awareness to certain health issues or diseases. However, it is not required, and some prefer to keep this detail private.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries, especially in online formats and modern print newspapers. A recent picture of the deceased, or one that is particularly representative of their life, is often chosen by the family.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication and length of the obituary. Newspapers often charge by line, word, or column inch, while many online platforms offer free or low-cost options.

Should the obituary mention predeceased and surviving family members?

Can obituaries include requests for charitable donations?

Absolutely. It's common for obituaries to include a request for charitable donations in memory of the deceased, often referred to as "in lieu of flowers." This can be to a charity that was significant to the person or to support a cause that is related to their death.

How do you choose a meaningful quote or saying for an obituary?

To choose a meaningful quote or saying, reflect on the deceased's beliefs, values, and personality. Consider selecting a quote from their favorite author, public figure, religious text, or even a phrase they often used themselves. It should ideally resonate with their life’s philosophy or how they’ll be remembered.

Are there different cultural or religious practices that influence obituaries?

Yes, cultural and religious customs can greatly influence the content and style of an obituary. Certain cultures or religions may have specific traditions or requirements that should be honored, from mentioning religious services to the inclusion of specific symbols or phrases.
