Doneta June Guengerich - June 08, 1934 - June 16, 2020

Departed: 06/16/2020 (North Austin)
Obituary Preview: Doneta June Guengerich (born June 8, 1934) of Austin, Texas went to Heaven on June 16, 2020. She was eldest daughter of Samuel Alvin and Thelma Yoder (both deceased).
Born (Elkhart, IN) and raised in the Mennonite Church, later attending the Presbyterian Church in Texas, she lived a lifetime of faith, family, and service to others. Doneta grew up mostly in her hometown of Goshen, IN during her primary and secondary school years, before moving to La Junta, CO in her late teens. She graduated from La Junta High School and then attended junior college at Hesston College, in Hesston, KS, receiving her Associate degree (1952). She then attended and graduated from La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing (1956). She went to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Greensburg Mennonite Hospital, in Greensburg, KS. There, she met her future husband, Lawayne Earl Guengerich.
They were married December 22, 1957 in Rocky Ford, CO, moving to Wichita, KS to live their early married years, having their first son (Steve) in 1959. Doneta loved being an RN, working for Saint Joseph’s Hospital in pediatrics, where she served as director of the night shift. She and Lawayne moved briefly to Great Bend, KS, before returning to Wichita in 1962. There, Lawayne joined the emergency ambulance service, working as a crew chief for Gold Cross. It was during this time that Doneta was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Rather than accepting her fate with this then-deadly disease, she decided to live life boldly, thriving for more than 55 years with the disease. Not only did she decide to have a second son (Frank), but she continued her work as a pediatrics RN in a private practice.
In 1967, Doneta moved to Amarillo, TX when Lawayne got financial support to open up his own emergency ambulance service. They moved their family and lived there for 15 years, growing Metropolitan ambulance service, together, to the largest operator in the Panhandle of Texas, with locations in Amarillo, Pampa, Canyon, and Clovis, New Mexico. In 1970, Doneta was recognized by the Amarillo Multiple Sclerosis Society as their Woman of the Year for her contributions and role model, as a survivor of the disease. In 1982, she and Lawayne exited the ambulance service and moved to Dallas, TX, with Doneta co-managing a Public Storage with Lawayne for many years, before retiring and settling in Lake Granbury Harbor, TX. Her final move with Lawayne was to Austin, to be nearer their family, where they have lived since September of 2009.
Driven, generous, loving, infinitely determined, loving to laugh, deeply devoted to the care of husband and family, loyal and trusted friend, razor-witted and wicked-smart, unafraid of breaking barriers, as a professional woman, speaking her mind for equal rights for women. By her example and her exhortation, it was impossible for one to quit or perform a task with half-hearted effort. Courageous to the very end. Doneta is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lawayne Guengerich, who served as her constant caretaker for the past decade, as her physical health and ability to walk declined;
two of her four siblings, Jerry Yoder (Caulfield, MO) and Waneta (Bill) Stutzman (Goshen, IN); two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Rebecca Guengerich, of Austin, Texas, and Frank and Terri Guengerich, of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren, Lauren Guengerich, of Nashville, TN; Benjamin (Lauren Huffman) Guengerich, of Minneapolis, MN; Andrew Guengerich, of Austin, TX; Courtney (Justin) Hempe, of Stafford, VA; and, Allison Guengerich, of Amarillo, TX; and, great grandson, Julian Benjamin Guengerich-Huffman.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online. It serves to inform the community about the passing and to celebrate the life of the deceased, often including a brief biography, family details, and information about funeral services or memorials.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, funeral homes offer services to assist with drafting the notice. Additionally, newspaper staff may compose an obituary based on information provided by the family.

What is typically included in an obituary?

Typically, an obituary includes the full name of the deceased, date of birth, date of passing, a brief life history, information about family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a photo. It may also contain personal anecdotes, accomplishments, and messages of gratitude or remembrance.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

There is no set rule, but obituaries are generally published as soon as practical after the death, often within a few days. This allows friends and family to make arrangements to attend services. Timing may vary based on publication deadlines and the family's wishes.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are published in newspapers—both local and national—online memorial sites, and sometimes on social media or the websites of funeral homes.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, although the two terms are often used interchangeably, a death notice is typically shorter and more factual, highlighting the name, age, date of death, and service details. An obituary is more detailed and often includes biographical information and personal tributes.

How can I write a respectful and meaningful obituary?

To write a respectful and meaningful obituary, gather accurate biographical facts and select anecdotes that highlight the deceased’s personality and achievements. Write sincerely and thoughtfully, keeping in mind the diverse audience who may read it. It's also advisable to have another family member or close friend review it before publication.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Many newspapers and online platforms charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost often depends on the length of the obituary and any additional features, such as photos. Some local newspapers or websites may offer free or low-cost options for brief death notices.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

Once published, an obituary in a print newspaper cannot be edited, but an online obituary might be updated or corrected. It is crucial to carefully review the text before submission to minimize errors.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

No, mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and not a requirement. Many families opt not to include this information for privacy reasons, though some may choose to share it, especially if the deceased was a public figure or involved in raising awareness for a particular cause or illness.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Obituaries can be submitted to newspapers or websites by contacting the publication's obituary department or using an online submission form if available. You will likely need to provide identification and verify your relationship to the deceased to prevent fraudulent posts.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary?

If you find an error in an obituary, contact the publication or website where it appears as soon as possible. Provide the correct details, and inquire about their policy for making corrections.

Can I include charitable donation requests in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. You can provide the name and address of the charity, and sometimes a personal reason for selecting that organization.

How can an obituary help in the grieving process?

Writing an obituary can be a therapeutic way to honor the deceased and reflect on their life. It also provides a historical record for the family and can bring a sense of closure by publicly acknowledging the loss.

What are common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include misspelling names, incorrect dates, and omitting important family members or life details. It's also important to avoid overly personal or sensitive information that the family may not wish to disclose publicly.

How much personal information should be included in an obituary?

Include enough detail to honor the deceased and inform the community, while respecting privacy. Avoid including sensitive information that could lead to identity theft, such as exact birthdates or mother's maiden name.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary published?

If the deceased expressed a wish not to have an obituary published, their wishes should be respected. Alternative ways of informing people about the death can be considered, like personal communications or private online groups.

Can obituaries be written for people who die in absentia or whose bodies are never found?

Yes, obituaries can be written for individuals who are presumed dead or whose bodies have not been recovered. These obituaries can provide closure for families and officially acknowledge the individual's life and passing.

Do you have to prove a death to publish an obituary?

Most publications require some form of validation, such as a death certificate or confirmation from a funeral home, to publish an obituary. This protocol helps prevent fraudulent posts.

Are there resources to help with obituary writing?

Yes, many funeral homes provide obituary writing assistance, and there are templates available online. Writing guides and professional writers can also aid in creating a fitting tribute.

Can an obituary be removed or taken down after being published online?

The policy on removing online obituaries varies by publisher. In some cases, they may agree to remove or adjust the online notice upon request, particularly if there are privacy concerns or egregious errors.
