Departed: 04/08/2024 (Janesville,)
Obituary Preview: David A. Young, 62, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2024 at Edgerton Care Center after a lengthy illness. He was the only child born to James and Jacqueline (Schulz) Young on November 28, 1961 in Rockford, Illinois. David attended St. Bernadette’s School where he began his love for music participating in band and choir that continued throughout his time at Boylan Senior High School (Rockford), from which he graduated in 1979.
In addition to loving all kinds of music, David was an avid sports fan. He loved playing Riverside Men’s League golf for many years, making many friends. He also was a strong supporter of the Janesville Jets local youth hockey club and had season tickets on the glass, which was the best spot to see the “good sprays”. David was a life-long fan of the Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks and was humbled to have met retired NHL player Steve Konroyd. Dave became a fan of any Wisconsin Badger sport from living in the great Cheesehead state for over 2 decades after meeting his loving and supportive wife, Beth. David met his wife Beth (Spangler) Young in 2004 and exchanged vows and made it official on May 5, 2006 at the Little Chapel of the West in Las Vegas, Nevada surrounded by amazing family and numerous friends (some of which may have come home with some money) but absolutely everyone came home with memories to cherish for a lifetime!
David is survived by his wife Beth, his mother, a son Dustin, 2 grandsons, and his devoted Golden Retriever Hazel Harper. He is preceded in death by his father, and 2 amazing labradors Wrigley and Rizzo. David also leaves behind countless supportive and engaging friends including his dedicated pal Mike (Wally) Altman who always made time for visits and comradery even before David became ill.
A celebration of life is planned for Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Rock County Brewing Company from 1pm to 5pm to share a sip, a story, and a sammich. Cheers Big Guy-until we all meet again.
All Faiths Funeral Home has provided great support and guidance following David’s passing; and family and friends are sincerely grateful. All Faiths Funeral and Cremation Service Janesville, Wisconsin (6085) 754-8700

Dale Eggers - August 26, 1953 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Janesville,)
Obituary Preview: Dale Eggers peacefully went to heaven on Thursday, March 14, 2024, with the comforting love of his wife Maurine. Dale was born in Dubuque, IA, on August 26, 1953. He spent his childhood in Kieler, WI, and graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1971. After high school, Dale went on to attend Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, WI. He graduated in 1972 from the College’s first graduating class for Food Service Management. Dale began a successful career as an executive chef in 1971 at Timbers Supper Club until 2001, at which time, he began working as a chef at Aramark-Alliant Energy Headquarters until retiring in 2018.
Dale was well known for his prowess in the kitchen, especially for his desserts. In 1995, he was recognized as the Wisconsin State Contemporary Pasty Champion. Dale generously shared his cooking talents with his community, family, and friends. His pies, cheesecakes, and cinnamon rolls were especially loved by all who knew him. They say that making food for others is one of the ultimate ways of showing love, and that’s exactly what Dale did best in life – he loved.
On February 4, 2000, at a sunset ceremony on Kaanapali Beach in Maui, Hawaii, Dale married his greatest love, Maurine Strickland. The couple settled in Marshall, WI, and later Janesville, WI. Throughout their married life, they enjoyed many return trips to their special place, Hawaii. Dale often referred to their visits as, “returning to the scene of the crime”. In addition to their Hawaii trips, Dale and Maurine enjoyed traveling to numerous national parks and had spent their last few winters in Orange Beach, Alabama. The couple loved attending live music events and concerts, and they found joy in sharing these special moments with loved ones. As self-proclaimed Parrot Heads, they often sported their parrot and land shark cheesehead hats while singing along at Jimmy Buffett concerts. Dale had a wonderful sense of humor that was always on display. Just to make you laugh, he would wear a salad-tong headband while cooking for family gatherings. Dale and Maurine loved opening up their home to their loved ones, and guests were often gifted one of Dale’s pies or cheesecakes to return home with. Throughout his life, Dale was a faithful fan of his beloved Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and UW sports. If you knew Dale, you knew he was a Badger through and through. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis and in adulthood, he took pleasure in golf.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Maurine Strickland Eggers; mother, Mary Lou Trowbridge; siblings: Doreen (Steve) Loehndorf, Darryl (Tammie Jo) Eggers, David (Colleen) Eggers, and Daniel (Kathleen) Eggers; step-siblings: Kathy (Scott) Harrison and Gary (Peggy) Trowbridge; father-in-law, James Strickland; sisters-in-law, Patricia (Gary) Johnson and Teresa (Curt) Hagenbuch; brother-in-law, James (Rose) Strickland; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold Eggers; step-father, Gordon Trowbridge; step-brothers, Steven (Hatsumi) Trowbridge and Michael Trowbridge; and mother-in-law, Janet Strickland.
Burial will take place at Natural Path Sanctuary, Verona, WI. A Celebration of Dale’s Life will take place on April 6, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Rotary Botanical Gardens, 1455 Palmer Dr., Janesville, WI – Aloha attire is encouraged. Departed: 02/21/2024 (Janesville,)
Obituary Preview: Geri McCluskey of Janesville, WI passed away peacefully at home on February 21st, 2024 after an extended illness. She was born in Janesville, WI the daughter of Phyllis (Cary) and Leslie Teal, owners of local taverns Springbrook and The Town Tap.
Geri began working at the age of 13. After a brief tenure at General Motors in the 1960s, during which time she rose to lead the secretarial pool, she was recruited to California to work for Hughes Aircraft. After a short time, she realized that her heart lay in Wisconsin, not California and she moved back to Janesville to begin her decades-long career as an entrepreneur.
She founded Key Associates in the 1970s and successfully sold her business to Manpower in the late 1980s. During this time she was also a licensed insurance broker and real estate broker. She attempted many different endeavors after selling her business. Among other things she started: a classifieds newspaper, a restaurant, a landscaping company, a furniture wholesale business and a futon manufacturing operation. After many stops and starts, she realized staffing was her true calling and she returned to that field to found Just-In-Time (JIT) Staffing which she ran successfully until the year before she passed.
When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed tending to her 6 acres of land along the Rock River in Janesville township. She owned the property for over 50 years, developing it over several phases of landscaping and construction. Similar to her commercial endeavors, she never stopped working on her land. She had excavators running on the property six months before passing away. The extensive gardens and the wildlife there will be a testament to a life well-lived that will be enjoyed by her family for decades to come.
She is survived by her children: daughter Kari McCluskey (Jimmy Nuter), son Kyle McCluskey, daughter-in-law Meredith Haynes, and grandsons Henry McCluskey and Desmond McCluskey all of Chicago, IL, as well as her brother, Richard Teal, from Horicon, WI. Her ex-husband, Steve McCluskey from Janesville, was at her side during her illness.

Patrick E. Moriarty - July 19, 1953 - December 23, 2023

Departed: 12/23/2023 (Janesville,)
Obituary Preview: JANESVILLE - After several years of courageously fighting a rare disease and with care provided by his family and hospice staff, Patrick Edward Moriarty, R.Ph., completed his journey among us on December 23, 2023. Pat was the second of three children born to Joseph Edward and Ruth Christine (Karlson) Moriarty on July 19, 1953.
He grew up in Superior, Wis., and attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He received his pharmacy degree in 1977 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1974, he met his best friend, Judith Detert, while both were working at the Wisconsin State Assembly, and they married on the UW campus four years later.
He was employed as a pharmacist in Ashland, Fond du Lac, West Bend, and Manitowoc; and as pharmacy manager in Austin (MN), Beloit, and Janesville (WI). He was esteemed by customers and coworkers alike for being fiercely dedicated to providing excellence in quality care not only as a pharmacist but also as a trusted friend. He retired after 42 years of practice.
Pat enjoyed camping trips to Isle Royale National Park, road trips exploring the American West, and he traveled to Ireland to visit the land of his ancestors. He never missed an opportunity to attend UW Badger basketball or hockey games, and was a devout Badger football fan. His happy place was soaking in the game day atmosphere with family and friends, decked out in vintage badger gear and hand-knit apparel.
Nothing was more important to him than family and he found his greatest joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren. Pat's greatest pride was in their accomplishments throughout their education and in their professional careers. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather who always had advice instilling a love of family, learning, respect for others, and finding joy in life no matter the circumstances. Though illness plagued his body in his final years, it never dulled his wry sense of humor and adroitness as a proverbial Irish storyteller.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law, Donald Howard and Steve Kalland. He is survived by his wife; his sisters, Linda Howard and Candy Kalland; children and spouses, Colin and Jennifer Moriarty, Eleanor and Judd Taylor, and Dylan Moriarty; and four grandsons, Theodore and Elliott Moriarty, and Arthur and Joseph Taylor.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Mercy Hospice for their kindness and care. Pat left this world as he lived - on his own terms. And, by his request, there will be no funeral nor memorial service. Let us all be glad for the beginning and vivaciousness of Pat's life and that did exist. Let's celebrate in our own ways that we were all so very privileged to have shared and been a part of it.

Patricia Ann Fleming - January 13, 1939 - November 27, 2023

Departed: 11/27/2023 (Janesville,)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Fleming was known around Janesville by many titles. If you met her on a night out she might be "The Hat Lady"; if she delivered you a singing balloon-o-gram, "The Balloon Lady"; if you were a child crossing Milton Avenue for school you may have called her "The Crossing Guard".
But her children and grandchildren affectionately called her “The Queen Mum". A self-appointed title, figuring she had the life and style to carry the crown. Her love of clothes and fashion began at an early age. Throughout her life she found great pleasure in pairing the right outfit with the right shoes, jewelry, accessories, purse, and of course the signature hat.
Born in 1939, Patricia was the fourth child of George E. and Helena Kessler Householder. She fondly recalled memories of growing up with her parents and siblings on the Kessler farm. Going to Willowdale School, a one room schoolhouse and later years in Janesville, living on Jackson Street.
In 1955 Patricia married her high school sweetheart, Thomas N. Thompson (d.2011). Together they were the proud parents of their four daughters. One of her first jobs was a shoe saleswoman and bookkeeper for Biwer's Shoe Store in downtown Janesville. She then worked a few years at Woodman's Bakery before following her mother's footsteps as a telephone operator for Wisconsin Bell.
Patricia and her sister Georgia were involved in Janesville Little Theater, along with their many other escapades. As a young mother Patricia enjoyed taking her daughters to Riverside & Palmer Parks, stopping for a treat at a root beer stand or taking a day trip to the zoo in Madison or Milwaukee. Her daughters recall a period when they never missed a Sunday night at the outdoor drive-in movie. And how their Mom always took her summer vacation during the 4-H fair so they could attend every day.
In 1970 she married “the love of her life Capt. Robert P. Fleming. The family moved to the Atlanta area where they started a private cargo airline. Patricia also worked as a Data Processing Operator, feeding punch cards into early computer processing units that took up an entire room. By the time Bob relocated the airline business to South Florida she no longer worked and enjoyed living a “life of leisure" with more time to focus on her favorite hobby.. shopping. During their time together she and Bob traveled frequently to the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and elsewhere. And she was always on top of the latest styles and fashions.
In 1981 Patricia moved back to Janesville to be closer to her family. She married David F. Williams in 1984, who she dubbed “the most exciting". She wore a white dress and had the wedding of her dreams. To her there was nothing wrong with three marriages and divorces... it was all a great adventure.
It was upon her return to Janesville, when Patricia and her second daughter Carrie Jo started their own business “Fancy Flights", a singing balloon-o-gram service that was a fixture in Janesville for 30 years. The first costumed delivery was a surprise appearance at her sister Georgia's 50th birthday. People throughout town still remember her popping into the school office dressed as a singing banana, or showing up as the Grim Reaper holding a plastic sickle in one hand and a bouquet of black balloons in the other for an “over the hill" birthday, or showing up on the line at the GM plant dressed as Dolly Parton or the Lady in Red to sing a little ditty and deliver a kiss on the cheek for someone's retirement. Her grand kids can recall getting picked up from school in a car overstuffed with inflated balloons and stray costume accessories as they ran a couple of deliveries on the way home. In 2012 a balloon release was done on sister Georgia's 80th birthday marking the close of the business.
But the Balloon Lady was not done yet. For the past 17 years Patricia would proudly tell people that she was employed by the Janesville Police Department. She traded in her character costumes for a bright yellow safety vest that read "Crossing Guard", and was armed with a flashing handheld stop sign. She took the job of helping children cross the intersection of Memorial Drive and Milton Avenue very seriously. She enjoyed getting to know the children and watching them grow up. She was touched to receive many thank you notes and occasional flowers from the children throughout the years. She reluctantly retired at the end of the school year 2023.
Throughout her life Patricia found great enjoyment in reading books, the Gazette and completing the daily puzzles. Keeping up with politics and sharing her opinions on the latest goings on was another way she socialized and let you know where she stood. The family knew never to call the house during Jeopardy, World News, or Wheel of Fortune. Any regular listeners of WCLO are probably familiar with hearing her call in to share her perspective on the topic of the day.
On the afternoon of November 27th 2023, Patricia passed away peacefully at home surrounded by all four of her daughters. We reminded her of how much she was loved, thanking her for the wonderful memories, and letting her know how much she will be missed.
Patricia is survived by her four daughters. Cheryl Ann (Joe) Stromski, Carrie Jo Nicoloff, Crislinn Lee Patterson, and Catrina Louise Bade; 11 grandchildren. Anthony (Christy) Nehls, Alexander (Alison) Nehls, Adrien (Kati) Nehls, James Bade Jr, C. Ryan (Rachel) Patterson, Zachary (Jessica) Bade, Joseph (Sarah) Stromski, Peter (Ashley) Nicoloff, Alexandra (Corbin) Reynolds, William (Cherish) Bade, and Mary Patricia (Mike) Bade Mandala; 13 great grandchildren. Ethan (Kira) Nehls, Elicia (Nick) Nehls, Tyler Nehls, Sophia Stewart, Aiden Coldsmith, Banner Patterson, Amelia Nehls, Noelle Stromski, Aubrey Nehls, Abraham Nehls, Linden Stromski, Eleanor Nicoloff, and Callum Nicoloff. She also has a great grandson expected in April and her first great great grandchild is expected in May. Patricia is also survived by her sister, Georgia Dietz; brothers, James (Betty) Householder, and Howard Householder; brother-in-law, Stuart Johnson; son-in-law, Christopher Patterson; many nieces, nephews and close friends.

How is an obituary different from a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written by a family member or a journalist, whereas a death notice is a shorter, more factual listing of a person’s death, usually published by the family in the classified section of a newspaper.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (if the family chooses to include this), a brief biography, details about the family, service times, special messages of remembrance, and sometimes a photo.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

No, it is not mandatory to publish an obituary in a newspaper. However, it is a common practice to notify the community, honor the deceased, and inform friends and relatives of upcoming services.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by a family member, a close friend, a funeral home professional, or a journalist. The authorship often depends on the level of detail and personalization the family desires.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including social media, online newspapers, and websites dedicated to memorializing loved ones.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To create a more personal obituary, you can include anecdotes, share the deceased's passions or hobbies, mention their character traits and achievements, and incorporate quotes from family and friends.

Are there specific guidelines to follow when writing an obituary?

While there are no strict rules, it's customary to follow a format that includes a beginning (announcement of death), middle (life story, achievements, and personality), and end (funeral service information and family list). Ensuring respect and thoughtfulness throughout is important.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published within a few days of a person’s death to allow sufficient time for friends and relatives to be notified of funeral arrangements, though timing can vary based on individual circumstances and preferences.

What are common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include missing important family members, spelling errors, factual inaccuracies, and revealing too much personal information, which could pose a security risk. Always have someone else proofread the obituary before it’s published.

What is the process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper?
