Departed: 08/13/2020 (Lake Worth )
Obituary Preview: Marvin Louis Akien Sr. Obituary
Marvin Louis Akien Sr., age 68, unexpectedly passed away on August 13, 2020 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
A West Palm Beach native, Mr. Akien was born October 17, 1951 and attended the historic Roosevelt High School in the 60s. While in high school, he cultivated his talent in swimming. Accordingly, upon graduation from high school, he was awarded a prestigious athletic scholarship to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) where he competed in collegiate swimming. He also translated his passion for mechanics into a program of study, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical arts with several certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Indeed, those who knew Mr. Akien can recall his love of (and talent for) automotive maintenance and repair. As a hobby, he even owned and designed racing cars, and several of his friends were intrigued by and often observed the design process that he used to build anything related to automobiles. As a race car driver in the mid-80s, he was one of the first African American men to go two rounds at the Gatornationals, an annual National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) national drag racing event held in Gainesville, Florida.
Mr. Akien will be sorely missed by all who loved him. He was predeceased by his parents, Chester Spann and Isadora Akien, and his siblings, Liz and Benny. He is survived by his sons – Marvin Jr. (Atlanta, GA), Michael (Atlanta, GA), Troy and Toi (West Palm Beach, FL), Jason (Lake City)– his brothers -- Hercules Akien and Bobby Akien – and a host of relatives and friends.

Annette J Mitchell - April 20, 1932 - August 11, 2020

Departed: 08/11/2020 (Lake Worth )
Obituary Preview: Annette J. Mitchell (88) fell asleep in the Lord surrounded by her immediate family on August 11, 2020.
Warm, generous, wise, cute as a button, an active and interested listener, always radiating an aura of acceptance and kindness, Annette J. Mitchell graced the lives of all she met -- her children, grandchildren, relatives, and many, many friends. She bore the tragedies in her life (the loss of two husbands, a son, and a grandson) with a virtuosic dignity and grace. “No matter what,” she always said, “I have lived a great life.” She persisted with a perpetually sunny outlook on life while having the ability to speak the truth without being rude or mean.
Born to Kytherian Greeks on April 20, 1932 in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, she married John Bellas (1930-1964) in 1950. After his passing in 1964, Annette moved from West Virginia to West Palm Beach the following year reinventing herself from a stay-at-home mom to an accomplished and beloved English teacher at the University of Palm Beach for over thirty years. In 1968, she married Edward Mitchell (1936-2014), with whom she owned and operated Continental Florists on Okeechobee Blvd. -- also for over thirty years. After retirement, Annette worked with the Adult Literacy Project teaching adults how to read.
A buoyant member of St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, Annette sang soprano in its choir for over fifty-five years while serving as treasurer. One of her greatest joys was singing in the choir with her beautiful and talented granddaughter Stephanie. Annette’s voice was lovely to the end; everyone who knew her remarked she never sounded old.
A connoisseur of American cinema, she often parried witty arguments on the TCM discussion boards.
Annette’s family include son Dr. Alexander Bellas, his wife Rano, children, Stephanie, Andrew, and Entheos (1988-2020); son John Bellas (1956-1996); daughter Kalliope Bellesis and her partner Jolyn Smith; step-son Kalon Mitchell, his wife Beth Mitchell, son Patrick, wife Sara, and daughter Tallulah; step-daughter Rima Hea, her husband Bob Hea and their children William and Shannon Hea; and God-Children Michael Miller, Karen Helstrom, Edward Angelo Nichols, and Anora Pyatigorskaya.
So kind and loving, and what a hoot!, Annette J. Mitchell will be dearly missed by the many who had the good fortune to know her.
May her memory be eternal.
Due to Covid, A Celebration of Life will be held at some time in the future.

Rodney Douglas - December 09, 1922 - July 28, 2020

Departed: 07/28/2020 (Lake Worth )
Obituary Preview: Rodney Knawl Douglas 12/9/1922 - 07/28/2020: Actor/Director, Educator, Poet and Author
Dr. Rodney Knawl Douglas was born on December 9th, 1922, in Grenada, W.I. He was the fifth child of Rufus and Helena Douglas. After moving to Trinidad, and completing his secondary studies he started working as a steward at the prestigious Hotel De Paris in Port of Spain. His managerial skills and abilities were quickly recognized and he was promoted to the position of manager. Pushed by entrepreneurial ambitions, he rented a room from his employer and opened a commercial school, training students for civil service positions.
Ambitious, Dr. Douglas migrated to England with the intention of obtaining a business degree from The London School of Economics. Remembering his passion and interest in acting and the performing arts, which began at an early age where he wrote/created/performed and staged plays performed in concert halls in Paradise, St Andrews, Grenada, Dr. Douglas accepted a part in a local production of the play, “The Big Knife”. His business ambitions were diverted, as he became totally enthralled with acting, both on the stage, and screen. Dr. Douglas crafted his thespian skills first at the British Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where he graduated in 1957, and later at the Guild Hall Film Institute. According to Dr. Douglas, it was a letter of recommendation, written on his behalf from renowned actor Paul Robeson, which enabled him to secure a scholarship.
Dr. Douglas migrated to The United States in the early 1960’s and while performing in an off Broadway play with James Earl Jones, he heard of a casting call for a production of “The Merchant of Venice”. He was dumbfounded when he was told “there were no parts for negroes”. This incident was the impetus that gave birth to The New Day Repertory Company, which he co-founded with his wife Olive in 1963 in New York City. Dr. Douglas served as President, Producer, Executive Director, and Artistic Director of New Day for over fifty years. The theater’s fifty-year celebration was prominently featured in the Poughkeepsie Journal in 2013. The article noted that it was Rodney’s sense of mission in bringing serious drama to the Hudson Valley in upstate N.Y. and performing it with consistently high standards, that had been the motivating force, propelling New Day forward, through the years.
A former Mayor of Poughkeepsie said, “New Day Repertory Company and its producers are jewels in our cities”. The Reverend Howard Major said, “Invariably the plays New Day Repertory selects to stage are not only entertaining, but thought provoking, and spiritually edifying. One of New Day’s plays is worth at least five of my sermons”. Best known as a theatrical director, educator and author, Rodney is also the pioneer of the non- traditional casting tradition in theater. He has acted on stage, film and television. Featured in the movies, “The Landlord”, “Cotton Comes to Harlem”, and “Nobody’s Fool”. He has directed on both sides of the Atlantic, a published play writer (Voice of the Ghetto), poet (Hope and Reflection, My Imaginary Lover), and author (Like Manna from the Sky).
As an educator, Dr. Douglas worked for SUNY, teaching drama, literature and poetry at New Paltz State University, and Marist College. He also worked as Foreign Student Advisor and Director of Alternative High School for the Research Foundation at SUNY. Poughkeepsie Journal correspondent Dr. Peter Leonard, also a professor at Vassar College, compared Dr. Rodney K. Douglas to Abraham Lincoln in one of his 1994 columns. He pointed out obvious physical similarities--tall, very angular, craggy faces adorned with a beard and possessed of great dignity. But more to the point, he addressed the philosophical ones: “Douglas and Lincoln both share an unshakable moral stand on equality and freedom. Lincoln enforces his vision with the sword while Douglas relies on the might of the pen.” Dr. Douglas' image was prominently featured in a montage of black historical celebrities, commissioned by the city of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 2000.
Dr. Douglas holds a B.A in Speech, M.A. in Theatre Arts, PhD in Educational Theatre, PhD in Drama, and an honorary PhD in Non-Traditional Casting.
Dr. Douglas is survived by his wife Olive, 3 of his 11 siblings, sisters: Auldith, and Blanche and brother Walter whose wife is Yvonne. He was preceded in death by 8 of his siblings, sisters: Mary and Dorcus, brothers: Javan, Rupert, Calvin, Benson, John, and David. With his first wife, Evelyn, he has 3 children; daughter Rodlyn, who preceded him in death (2010); son, Lynrod whose wife is Millicent; and daughter, Jennifer whose husband is Ronald. With his second wife, Olive, he has a son, Kevin whose wife is Valerie and a daughter, Caia, and 3 stepdaughters: Cynthia whose husband is John, Ann, Auslyn, and 1 stepson: Steve whose wife is Gwen. He has 17 Grandchildren: Ian, Lynrod Jr., Jamel, Lamar, Shari, Tamara (deceased 2008), Milena, Natasha, Ronald Jr., Nadiya, John, Jr., Yanikk, Lenecia, Samiyah, Sebastien, Savannah and Avery: 21 Great-Grandchildren, and 2 Great-Great granddaughter. The Douglas family, although very large, is extremely close. Dr. Douglas also leaves behind numerous loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and other family members who primarily reside in America, England, Canada, Grenada, and Trinidad.
A very kind, humble man, with a strong sense of family, he has helped, opened doors, stayed in touch, and opened his home to family and friends throughout the years. Affectionately known as “Uncle Knocky” by his grateful and appreciative family, whose lives he has touched and enriched.
Dr. Douglas has left a rich legacy. He will be greatly missed and will always be remembered.
