Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice, often published in a newspaper or on online platforms, that announces the death of a person and provides a summary of their life, including information on surviving family members, accomplishments, and details regarding funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to publicly acknowledge the loss and celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

An obituary is generally written by a close family member or a friend of the deceased. In some cases, individuals leave instructions for their own obituaries, or a professional writer at a newspaper or funeral home may draft the obituary based on information provided by the family.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there is no strict standard format, obituaries commonly include the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, the date and place of death, a brief summary of their life and career, information about surviving relatives, and details on funeral or memorial services. Some may also include cause of death if the family wishes to share it.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely depending on the level of detail the family wishes to include and the medium in which it's published. A typical obituary might be one to two paragraphs for a brief notice or a more detailed account spanning several paragraphs.

Where are obituaries commonly published?

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, online memorial sites, social media, and through funeral home websites. The choice of publication usually depends on the preferences of the family and where they believe the deceased's community will most likely see it.

What information is essential to include in an obituary?

The most essential information to include in an obituary is the name of the deceased, date of death, and any service times or locations. Many families also choose to include a brief biography, names of close surviving relatives, and any organizations where donations could be made in memory of the deceased.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a photograph with an obituary. This is typically a recent portrait or a photo that captures the spirit of the person who has passed away.

How can an obituary serve as a historical record?

Obituaries provide a snapshot of the deceased's life that can be preserved in family records and archives. As an historical document, it can serve as a resource for future generations researching their ancestry or for historians studying the community.

Should an obituary mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is optional and ultimately a personal choice of the family. Some families choose to include this information for transparency or to bring awareness to certain health issues or causes, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Are obituaries always somber?

No, obituaries can reflect a range of emotions. While they often express the sadness of loss, they can also celebrate the person's life with a tone of gratitude, humor, and love. The tone of the obituary should align with the personality of the deceased and the wishes of their family.

What distinguishes an obituary from a death notice?

While both an obituary and a death notice inform the public of a person's passing, a death notice is typically shorter and more factual, often listing just the name, date of death, and service details. An obituary is more detailed and includes biographical information and personal tributes.

Can an obituary help in the grieving process?

Yes, writing and reading an obituary can be therapeutic. It allows the bereaved family and friends to reflect on the life and accomplishments of the deceased, offers a way to publicly express their grief and loss, and can be a key part of the healing process.

What is the importance of an obituary for friends and community members?

An obituary is an important way for friends and community members to learn about the passing of someone they knew, to offer their condolences, and to be informed about any upcoming memorial services. It also allows those who may not have been in close contact to pay their respects and honor the deceased's memory.

Is it necessary to list survivors in an obituary?

While not required, it is customary to list immediate surviving family members such as spouses, children, and siblings. This acknowledges their relationship to the deceased and can serve as a point of contact for those wishing to express condolences.

What should I do if I spot a mistake in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an obituary, contact the family or the publication as soon as possible to arrange for a correction. Timeliness is important, especially if the service details are incorrect.

How can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Many obituaries invite charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This is often phrased as "In memory of [Name], donations may be made to [Charity Name]." Be sure to include instructions or a web address if necessary to facilitate the donation process.

Is there a deadline for submitting an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers have specific deadlines for submitting obituaries, often a day or two before the desired publication date. It's important to contact the newspaper as soon as possible to ensure timely publication.

Can obituaries be posted online exclusively?

Yes, obituaries can be posted exclusively online on platforms such as online memorial websites, social media, or the funeral home’s website. Online obituaries can be easily shared and often allow for interactive elements such as guest books or photo galleries.

Will newspapers edit the obituaries that are submitted?

Newspapers may edit obituaries for style, clarity, and to meet publication standards. It's important to clarify with the newspaper what their editing policies are and whether you will have the opportunity to review the final version before it is published.

What if I can't afford the cost of a newspaper obituary?

If you find the cost of a newspaper obituary prohibitive, consider alternative methods such as online obituaries, community bulletin boards, or social media. Some newspapers also offer discounted rates or free short death notices for those in financial need.

Should an obituary include details about the funeral or memorial service?

Including details about the funeral or memorial service in an obituary is helpful to inform those who may wish to attend. Include the date, time, and location, as well as any specific wishes of the family (e.g., private ceremony, public visitation hours).

How can we ensure that an obituary is seen by everyone who knew the deceased?

To ensure that an obituary reaches everyone who knew the deceased, consider publishing it in local newspapers, sharing it on social media, and notifying community organizations, churches, or groups that the deceased was a part of. Also, ask friends and family to help spread the word.
