Robert Patterson - May 28, 1934 - November 18, 2023

Obituary Preview: God tenderly called His child, Robert Lee Patterson, from this earthly work to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 18, 2023. Robert Lee, as he was affectionately called by his siblings, was the youngest son and the youngest child of twelve to the late Beatrice Robinson Patterson and the late Jasper William Patterson. Deacon Patterson attended and graduated from Compact Elementary and High School. He also joined and was baptized at Mt. Olive Baptist Church at an early age. Being active in school and church were important to the Patterson family. As a result, Robert played basketball at Compact High and sang in the choir at school and church. After graduating from high school in 1953, Deacon Patterson attended Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon leaving Morgan, he joined the U.S. Army. Upon serving his tour in the military, Deacon Patterson migrated to Newark, New Jersey. In 1957, he met his true love, Annie Ruth. They married and as a young married couple, both played a great role in the lives of all of Annie Ruth’s siblings. In 1959, the couple welcomed their only son, Spencer. Hard work was the fabric of Deacon Patterson’s life. He was employed at Hillside Metal and as Head of Maintenance at Caldwell College in the early years. Later he joined the cosmetic industry working at Revlon and retiring from Charles of the Ritz. Retiring from one career simply was an opportunity for Robert Lee to explore “fun jobs”. Before leaving New Jersey, he drove for a private local limousine service. In 1998, Deacon Patterson accompanied by his wife, returned to the Patterson homestead to enjoy their twilight years. Three years later, their precious granddaughter, Sahira, joined them in the home. What a joy! Returning to his roots was important. He restored and maintained his religious affiliation with Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was ordained as a Deacon. He was very involved in the life of his church. There are special people in our lives who never leave us, even when they are gone. So it is with our father, our grandfather, our uncle, our friend Robert Lee Patterson. Truly, he was a loving, caring, and dedicated man of God. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement that typically appears in newspapers and online platforms to inform the public of a person's death. It usually includes a brief biography, surviving family members, funeral or memorial service information, and can sometimes include a special message or an acknowledgment of the deceased's accomplishments and impact on the community.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary differs from a death notice. A death notice is a brief, paid announcement in a newspaper that gives the name of the person who died and the details of the funeral or memorial service. An obituary, on the other hand, is a more detailed account that covers the person's life, family, and often their impact on others.

Who can write an obituary?

Anyone can write an obituary, though it is often written by immediate family members or close friends. Some families may choose to have a professional, such as a funeral director or a writer, craft the obituary to ensure it is fitting and appropriately honors the deceased's life.

What key elements should an obituary contain?

An obituary should generally include the deceased's full name, date of birth, date of death, a brief account of their personal life and achievements, family members, information on the funeral or memorial services, and any preferred charities for memorial donations. It may also contain special messages or quotes that reflect the spirit of the deceased.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral?

Obituaries are usually published as soon as possible after the death to notify the community and provide details of the upcoming funeral or memorial service. However, in certain cases, an obituary may be published after the services have occurred.

Do I have to pay to publish an obituary?

Most newspapers and online memorial sites charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost can vary depending on the length of the obituary and the specific publication's pricing policy. Some platforms offer free options, but these may come with limitations on length or content.

Can an obituary be published in multiple locations?

Yes, an obituary can be published in various newspapers and online platforms to reach a wider audience, especially if the deceased had connections in multiple communities or regions.

How do I choose what to include in an obituary?

When writing an obituary, consider what the deceased would have wanted to be highlighted about their life. Focus on significant life events, relationships, achievements, and personal characteristics that were important to them. It's equally important to be respectful and considerate of the family's privacy when choosing what to share.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary significantly. In a newspaper, it may range from a brief notice of a few sentences to a lengthy tribute of several paragraphs. Online obituaries can be longer due to fewer space restrictions.

Is it okay to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer transparency, while others may wish for privacy regarding this information. It's perfectly acceptable to omit the cause of death if that is the family's preference.

How can I personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, personal memories, hobbies, favorite quotes, or any unique aspects that encapsulate the individual's personality and life's passions. Share stories that evoke the essence of who the person was and the legacy they have left behind.

Can obituaries include photographs?

Many publications and online platforms allow the inclusion of a photograph with the obituary. This is an excellent way to visually honor the person and provide a recognizable image for those who may have known them.

Should I mention charitable contributions in an obituary?

If the deceased had a particular cause or charity they were passionate about, or if the family prefers donations in lieu of flowers, this can be mentioned in the obituary. Be sure to include the name and details of the charity to make it easy for others to contribute.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary?

If you find an error in an obituary, contact the newspaper or online service where it was published as soon as possible. They can assist you in making the necessary corrections. Prompt action is important as obituaries are time-sensitive announcements.

Is there a deadline for submitting an obituary?

Yes, newspapers and other publications typically have specific deadlines for obituary submissions, especially if you want them to appear by a certain date. Check with the specific publication for their deadlines to ensure timely posting.

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

While it is not usual practice to update an obituary once published, corrections or additional information can sometimes be added in a subsequent issue of a newspaper or updated on a website. For significant changes, consider publishing an additional notice or announcement.

How do I handle an obituary for a person with a complicated family situation?

Writing an obituary for someone with a complicated family situation requires sensitivity and discretion. It's important to communicate clearly with family members and agree on what will be included in the obituary. Focus on honoring the deceased while being respectful to all parties involved.

Is it necessary to include a list of survivors in an obituary?

While not mandatory, it is customary to include a list of survivors in an obituary, such as a spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings, or parents. This recognizes the family members who were significant in the deceased's life and provides a point of connection for readers who may know them.

How long does an obituary stay published in the newspaper and online?

In print, an obituary typically appears on a specific date or set of dates. Online obituaries can remain indefinitely, serving as a lasting memorial. Some websites may offer options regarding the duration of the posting.

What should be done if a loved one dies abroad?

If a loved one dies abroad, you can still publish an obituary in their home country or community to inform friends and family. You might need to provide additional details about the circumstances and any local memorial services or arrangements being made.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, writing your own obituary in advance is a thoughtful way to ensure that your life is celebrated in a way that reflects your wishes. It can also alleviate some of the stress and burden on family members during a time of grief.
