Sweet sawmill, divorced, remarried, started another family, moved to Georgia, made more kids, got divorced again, went back to the sawmill, and retired to become a icon in the bars of Warrensburg. Ernie had a big personality that could bring out the best in anyone, he was a charmer. He had the biggest heart and anyone that crossed his path knew it. Richard A. Emard - October 18, 1946 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Warrensburg)
Obituary Preview: STONY CREEK: Richard Arthur Emard passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, with his family by his side. Richard was born in Norwalk, CT on October 18, 1946, to Richard Emard and Eileen (Klopp) Emard.
Dick was a licensed electrician by trade for over 50 years, owning and operating Emard Electric in both CT and NY with residential and commercial projects such as Broadway Starlight Express, as well as residential projects outside the US on the islands of Saint John and Saint Thomas. However, his true passion was always horses and the more relaxed lifestyle of a small town. It was because of this passion that later in life he moved to Stony Creek, NY where he opened Stirrups and Spurs Stables and eventually met his partner, Vicki.
In his final years, Dick became Generac certified in order to provide the much-needed backup generators in and around the surrounding areas of Stony Creek. This was a game changer for many who for as long as they could remember had struggled year after year without power during the many winter storms, for sometimes weeks at a time. During his busiest year, Dick installed over 200 units. Finally, in the last few years, Dick and Vicki opened an Airbnb where they hosted and catered to the many families visiting the area annually. The level of hospitality these families received from Dick and Vicki garnered rave reviews which resulted in many repeat customers.
Dick and Vicki enjoyed many years together both in Stony Creek and Puerto Morales, Mexico where they visited for a month or more each year. It was the perfect fit for them being another small-town setting, with friendly people, a relaxed atmosphere, and the added bonus of beautiful weather. This became like a second home to them where they were considered family by many.
Dick was intelligent, creative, inventive, hardworking but most of all just fun to be around! Over his 75+ years, he had many aliases given to him by his MANY lifelong friends and family: Dicky (by his mom), Dad, Tricky Dick (his CB radio handle), Papa Richard or The Mayor (by Puerto Morales locals), and finally, grandpa which turned out to be his favorite.
Dick is survived by his partner of 25 years Vicki (Jones) Monthony of Stony Creek, NY; his daughter Dana (Emard) Nunes, husband Joe, and their two children, Gage and Rylie Nunes of Danbury, CT; daughter Kristin Emard and long-time partner Mark Canestrari of Bethel, CT; son Richard Emard, wife Natelia (Langellier) Emard and their two children Evan and Eleanor Emard of Bethel, CT; stepdaughter Bridgett (Jones) Nelson, husband Wes Nelson and their three children Audrey Bills, Loki Nelson and Willow Nelson of Athol, NY., and his first wife Dawn (Lato) Emard whom he shared 17 years of marriage. He was predeceased by both his parents and his brother Kevin Emard.
There will be a get together celebration of Dick’s life at a later date.

On February 9, 2024, Joyce Eileen Oravitz passed away at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls NY. Born on June 6, 1945, to James and Edna Kelly in Kearny, NJ, she was the middle of 3 children. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Leonard Oravitz of Hudson Falls, NY, her 2 children Kristine Germain (Timothy Krachkowski) of South Glens Falls, NY and Kevin DaSilva (Rubina) of The Woodlands, TX, her brothers James Kelly (Grace) of Chapel Hill, NC and John Kelly (Kathy) of Nutley, NJ, her 2 step-children Karen Paulis and Nicholas Oravitz and her 5 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She earned her Associate Degree in Business Management in 1999 from Butler County Community College in Butler, PA, and was awarded the American Association of University Women Scholarship Award and National Honor Society- Cum Laude.
Joyce loved working with her hands and enjoyed many hobbies. She always had her trusty sewing machine close by, whether it was for a quilt for a newborn, clothes for herself or family, curtains for windows, or a hem before a wedding. She enjoyed her collection of antiques, especially her antique dolls. She would stage her collection throughout her home, not just sitting on a shelf but displayed in an antique high chair or crib. She was a master at crochet and knitting, creating gorgeous blankets that she would gift to friends, family, and almost anyone who needed one. Joyce also loved to get her hands dirty and no task was too big or too small. She had no hesitation in remodeling her home, building shelves, making decorations, or tending to her large family of plants.
Joyce always wanted to be around her family and friends, and if you were not her friend, give her five minutes to talk with you and you would be. She had an infectious laugh that would relax you and had a humility that would charm you. She enjoyed a good tease, but be ready to receive a tease in return. No holiday was ever overlooked as a reason to gather those she cared about to cook for and create new decorations to make it just a bit more festive. With her family spread out across the country, the family knew not to go by the calendar to celebrate a particular holiday. Joyce planned holidays to be celebrated during the annual summer family reunion.
Joyce went by many names, Mrs. Oravitz, daughter, sister, ma, mom, Grandma, Aunt Joyce, sister-in-law, step-mom, and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her. We will miss her laugh at a good story, her ear when we needed to talk, her shoulder to cry on, her hug when you visited, and her heart that loved us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, typically published in newspapers and online platforms. It highlights the person’s life, achievements, and information about the planned funeral or memorial services. Obituaries often include a brief biography and details about the family members the deceased has left behind.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

A death notice is a brief, paid announcement in a newspaper that simply states the fact of someone's death, often with the time and location of the funeral or memorial service. An obituary is generally more detailed and includes a more comprehensive account of the person's life and legacy, and is sometimes written by the newspaper staff or the family at no cost.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are typically written by family members, friends, or by the newspaper’s editorial staff. Funeral homes often assist families in crafting obituaries as well.

What key details should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, place of birth, date of death, and a summary of their life's story, including significant personal and professional milestones. Details pertaining to family members, funeral or memorial service arrangements, and any preferred charities for memorial donations should also be included.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

An obituary is typically published within a week after the person's death, in order to inform the community in a timely manner about the service arrangements and allow friends and acquaintances to pay their respects.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary when someone dies?

No, it is not legally mandatory to publish an obituary; it is a personal choice made by the family based on their desire to publicly acknowledge the death and celebrate the life of the deceased.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, obituaries are commonly published online on websites dedicated to memorial services, social media, funeral homes' websites, and online versions of local and national newspapers.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary I’ve published?

You should contact the newspaper or website where the obituary was published as soon as possible to correct any errors. Most publications are very understanding and will swiftly correct factual mistakes.

Are there different types of obituaries?

Yes, there are generally two types: traditional obituaries that focus on providing pertinent life details and notifying the community of the death and services, and life tributes which may be more personal, evocative, and less formal in recounting the individual's story and impact.

How do you write a compelling obituary?

To write a compelling obituary, focus on the highlights of the person’s life, significant life events, unique personal qualities, enduring relationships, and their impact on others. Use respectful and warm language that honors the deceased while providing essential information to the community.

What is typically the tone of an obituary?

The tone of an obituary is usually formal and respectful, with an emphasis on celebrating the person’s life and acknowledging their passing. However, the tone can be personalized to reflect the spirit and personality of the deceased.

An obituary is not a legal document but can serve as a public notice of death, often required to proceed with other legal steps such as settling estates.

How can I ensure privacy while still publishing an obituary?

You can protect privacy by limiting the amount of personal detail shared, such as omitting the deceased’s home address, and providing information on funeral services selectively. Additionally, you may choose a private funeral service and clearly indicate that preference in the obituary.

Is there a word limit for obituaries?

Many newspapers have a word limit for obituaries, and costs can be based on length, especially for longer memorials. Online platforms usually offer more flexibility in length. It’s best to consult with the specific publication regarding their policies.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Submissions can typically be made either online, via email, or by telephone. It is important to follow the specific guidelines provided by the newspaper or website, which include deadlines, word limits, and any fees that may be associated with the publication.

What are some common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Common phrases include terms like "passed away," "survived by," "preceded in death by," "in lieu of flowers," and "will be dearly missed." These phrases help to respectfully communicate necessary details and wishes of the family.

Should I include a photo with an obituary?

It's a personal choice, but including a photo can be a meaningful way for the community to recognize and remember the deceased. When choosing a photo, it's best to select one that is recent and represents the personality of your loved one.

How does one decide between a private and public obituary?

A private obituary is usually chosen for reasons of discretion and privacy, particularly when the family wishes to mourn without public attention. A public obituary is selected to inform a wider community about the loss and celebration of life. The decision rests on the family’s comfort and the deceased's wishes.

What if the family cannot afford an obituary?

If cost is a concern, consider shorter death notices which are usually less expensive, free community publications, social media, or online memorial sites. Some newspapers may also offer free or sliding-scale fees for those in financial need.

Can an obituary be too personal?

While personal details can make an obituary more meaningful, it is important to balance privacy with sharing a life’s story. Always consider the wishes of the deceased and the comfort level of the family when deciding on what personal information to include.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely up to the family’s discretion. Some families choose to include this information, especially if it relates to a cause for which they are advocating or raising awareness, but many opt for privacy.

How can friends and acquaintances contribute to an obituary?

Friends and acquaintances can contribute memories, photos, and anecdotes for the obituary, which can be especially helpful to the family during their time of grief. However, to be included in the final obituary, any contributions should be welcomed and approved by the family.
