Erica Jean Hurd - April 18, 1968 - March 06, 2024

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Rutland)
Obituary Preview: Erica Jean (Carbonneau) Hurd April 18, 1968 – March 6, 2024
It is with great sadness we share the passing of Erica Hurd at home with family at her side. Erica bravely fought the most aggressive type of breast cancer for three years. Her participation in research studies brings hope for a better future.
Erica was born in Nashua, NH where she attended school. She graduated and played softball at Nashua High School. Erica earned a Cosmetology License. This began more than thirty years as a hair stylist. She worked at several salons in Nashua. Through her love of skiing, a mutual friend introduced Erica to her husband and after a leap year marriage at Parker’s Maple Barn in New Hampshire on February 29th 1996, they moved to Pittsfield, VT.
Once relocated, her Vermont career had humble beginnings in small space at Mother Shapiro’s restaurant. This was used as a cigar room at night and presto change-o became “MotherCuts” by day. It had excellent ventilation and neither salon customers or the cigar smokers knew the other purpose. Today, you can order sushi in that same space. Always one to exemplify efficiency and expediency, Erica lobbied the State licensing board and had a pointless “Salon Manager License” eliminated from bureaucratic requirements. Later, at The Woods her salon became “MountainCuts” and she teamed up with partner Stephanie Pike to relocate to the present Liquid Art building. Erica taught many stylists in New England as an educator for an international hair color brand. Eventually, the Route 4 location became the MountainCuts home.
Through the years, Erica enjoyed a wide range of activities. She taught skiing at Killington’s Mini Stars, was a live on-air snow, trails and weather personality on Killington TV and did curling at Rutland Rocks. Her love of softball continued after high school and she played in several women’s and coed leagues and tournaments in the Nashua area. Erica was usually at second base in the Killington softball league. Occasionally she’d turn double plays, with her husband at short stop, if he didn’t bobble the ball before tossing it over.
Erica’s community involvement and service was lifelong. She was a dynamic fundraiser for Jimmie Heuga Multiple Sclerosis, the Pittsfield recreation department and the Roger Clark Memorial Library. As library committee chair, she established policies, procedures and the hiring of a librarian for the first time. Erica was a town auditor and even helped out cutting the grass in the cemetery. She recently saved a life. Hearing screams for help, witnesses say Erica “took off like a rocket” across Route 4 and gave chest compressions to an overdose victim until paramedics arrived.
A true Aries, Erica was feisty, persistent, caring, spiritual, loyal and loving. She loved camping, hiking and backpacking from childhood on ranging from the White and Green mountains of New England to the famed Kalalau Trail of Kauai and many places in between. Her love of animals included the uncanny ability to calm the most nervous and even aggressive dogs. She literally touched the lives of hundreds of people through her level 2 Reiki and as a Cosmetologist, sometimes known as a “shrink with a sink”. This gathering and sharing of information and advice was a benefit to so many and to her.
Nothing compared to the love and joy Erica felt about being a mother to her daughter Amelia. Erica burst with pride watching her play softball or soccer or hearing her make music. She wanted Amelia to have a life full of friends, interests, and all the opportunities she had in her own life, and more. Erica would often say how lucky she and her husband Christopher were to have their dream come true miracle baby and growing to be such a great kid. She loved that she raised such a good human being and though heartbroken, Erica tried to prepare Amelia for a future without her. She appreciated Amelia for her own unique self, but also loved when reports from others noticed that her daughter shared many of the qualities of her mom. Erica treasured being part of Amelia’s unfolding life, and held great faith in Amelia’s future.
Erica is survived by her daughter Amelia and husband Christopher of Pittsfield, VT. Her father Rick Carbonneau of Nashua, NH. Sister Kris Feinberg (Stu) of Ocala, FL., her nieces and nephews Brennan and Jayden and Roger and Keely and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and their families.
The Hurd family would like to thank so many for the kindness and help you have given Erica through her cancer fight and for the hundreds of remembrances on her Facebook page. For several years, Erica organized the “Pittsfield Picnic” - celebrating community togetherness and spirit. In tribute, a celebration of Erica’s life will be held on the Pittsfield Green – in the picnic style – on Sunday August 11th, 2024.

Frank Douglas Driggers - February 28, 1967 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Rutland)
Obituary Preview: The world has grown duller and indeed quieter with the passing of father, brother, and friend Frank Driggers.
Frank, was one known to challenge the world with a wry smile. His favorite places were to be in the woods, with his sons and in Facebook "jail".
Frank was born February 28th, 1967, in Rutland Vermont to Marceline Aines and Benjamin Driggers. He graduated from Rutland High School in 1985. It is here that Frank became part of the original Three Amigos with his friends Jeff Pitts and Brian Goodell. He was employed for 18 years at Green Mountain Window and Door and was thought highly of by this company and its vendors.
Frank was unquestionably one of a kind however, he was one of several siblings: Cynthia Grantham (sister), Benjamin D Driggers Jr(brother) Matthew Driggers and Randy Huggins(stepbrother).
In the autumn of 1991 Frank married Carrie (Bizon) Covey. Before this union ended, one of Frank’s greatest dreams came true when he began a family of his own with the birth of Tanner Driggers. Soon after Hunter Driggers was added to the family. Frank was blessed with two amazing young men whom he loved more and was prouder of beyond anything in his life. He cheered for them on the lacrosse field in their youth, in the woods, on the water and in all their adventures. Former wife, Carrie became one of his biggest champions and best friends, giving him grief when he needed it and support at every turn. They spent holidays as a family laughing, eating, remembering old memories, and making new ones.
Frank also was beyond blessed to have niece Rachel Grantham whom he thought of as a daughter who had such a an incredibly special place in his heart no one could compete with.
He loved to fish, hunt, forage for mushrooms and watch sports. He adored poking the bear and making people think. Frank worked a variety of jobs in his life, but his favorite professions were challenging conventional thinking and being a father.
He is survived by his sons Tanner Driggers of Proctor, and Hunter Driggers of Rutland, Rachel Grantham of Rutland, his sister Cynthia Grantham of Rutland, Benjamin D Driggers of Vernon, Matt Driggers of Sumter S. Carolina, Carrie Covey of Proctor and many nieces and nephew, cousins, and friends. Frank didn't always choose the easy road and often went down the path less traveled and that made all the difference. And if you're still reading this, he’ll tell you to stop, get
up, get going and get living, post something to make people think, say something to make them pause, laugh when you shouldn't and when you've left them speechless it's time to leave. Elvis - Frank Driggers has left the building. A celebration of life will be held on March 24th from 1PM to 3PM at the Moose Club in Rutland. Those who can bring a dish to share would be greatly appreciated. Frank dress code is required: jeans, camo, sports or hunting themed t-shirts. Please bring your Frank stories and memories, be prepared to laugh, cry, and say good-bye to the man, the myth, the legend, the one and only Frank Douglas Driggers!

Doris Kurathh - March 13, 1926 - February 03, 2024

Departed: 02/03/2024 (Rutland)
Obituary Preview: Doris Kurath
On February 3, 2024, Doris S. Kurath (Zweifel), age 97 transitioned peacefully to eternal life while living at the Meadows, Rutland, VT. Doris was born March 13, 1926 in Zurich, Switzerland and was raised in several different locations in Switzerland during her childhood. She had a very close relationship with her parents during their lifetime, but sadly lost her sister, Ruth, at a young age. She immigrated to the United States with her husband Paul in 1951. Paul and Doris became US Citizens and lived in Lawrence, KS, Rochester, NY, and eventually settled in Waukegan, IL where they continued to raise their 5 children (Marian, George, Robert, Marcus, and Peter). Paul and Doris were eventually divorced, but both remained active with their children until Paul died in 2002. In 2005, around age 80, Doris moved to Rutland, VT to enjoy life in the same town as her daughter, Marian, and her family, including grandson, Kirk. Doris has 2 other grandchildren, Dustin (Menominee WI) and Kylie (Seattle, WA) and great grandson Marlin (Seattle, WA).
Doris was a role model of love and integrity in her family and friendships. She lovingly referred to all of her loved ones, as her “People Garden” and nurturing her relationships was a top priority in her life. As a mother, she had a gentle way of guiding her children and was always a source of wisdom. Often she would say, I don’t want to meddle….but I have something you should think about. She was there to listen and support us whenever we needed her.
After many years of raising children with many fun and challenging times, trips to the beach, camping, and managing the daily activities of a large family, Doris traveled the US extensively and visited Switzerland many times. She made new friends everywhere and maintained many of those friendships throughout her life. One of her favorite destinations was Ring Lake Ranch in Wyoming, where she hiked, rode horses and enjoyed the company of many friends who shared her passion for the beauty of nature. She also grew to love VT as her senior homeland that reminded her of her native Switzerland in many ways. We always talked openly about the reality of death as part of the cycle of life. At her age, she has been predeceased by many beloved people, most notably, her son, George in 2006. She shared that she will celebrate being reunited with many from her “People Garden” in eternal life. Regarding her own death, she asked to share these words from St. Anselem: “Let us live with uncertainty as with a friend. To feel certain means feeling secure. To feel safe is unreal – a delusion of self. Knowing that we do not know is the only certainty. Letting the self be lost in Christ.”
As her adult children, we honor and thank our mother for her love and nurturing throughout our lives. We are also deeply grateful to all those who have loved her in life and the professionals who have assisted with her daily care and medical needs during these last 5 years of more intensive aging. This includes the compassionate and competent staff from the Meadows, At Home Senior Care, VNA- Hospice, Associates in Primary Care, RRMC, Maples and Pines.
A small private service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Aldous Funeral Home, Rutland, VT according to Mom’s final wishes. If you wish to offer a remembrance of Doris, please make a charitable contribution in her honor or share a random act of kindness with someone in your life. This will be appreciated by her and the family. We know that Mom is now at peace and fully healed of her earthly wounds. As Mary Oliver says in a poem…” maybe death isn’t darkness, after all, but so much light wrapping itself around us as soft as feathers….and letting ourselves be carried, as through the translucence of mica, to the river that is without the least dapple or shadow, that is nothing but light, scalding, aortal light in which we are washed and washed out of our bones.” The world is a better place because of her peaceful nature, joyful embrace of life and kindness that she shared with all of us. We Love You Mom/Doris With All Our Hearts Always and Forever!

Louise Josephine Cooney Guyette - October 09, 1919 - January 26, 2024

Departed: 01/26/2024 (Rutland)
Obituary Preview: Louise Josephine Cooney Guyette 1919-2024
Louise C. Guyette passed away at 104 on January 26, 2024. She was a fiercely proud Irishwoman whose grandparents came from Ireland on her father’s side. Her Irish ancestors on her mother’s side came to the US before 1812. She was born in Ellinwood, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Cooney and Elizabeth Ward Cooney. She was very proud of the fact that when a sophomore in high school, she received the highest honors in the state for Literature and English. She showed her mastery of the English language throughout her life, first overseeing all correspondences coming out of her office at the Pentagon, then correcting her children’s grammar, and editing and typing her husband Ralph’s books.
At 16 she was living in NC. She finished high school in Charlotte and went to work as a waitress. Businessmen frequented the establishment and often told her she should go to business school and work in an office. She attended a small school run by a woman, who let the students advance at their own rates. She soon advanced into a class by herself. She was encouraged to take a test as a prerequisite for working in Washington, DC at the War Department during WWII. In 1942, she passed with flying colors and went to work as a secretary. Soon they were building the Pentagon. Her office moved to the 4th floor while they were still building the 5th floor.
It was a fateful move. The Pentagon had bowling teams, and Louise, who was good bowler, joined one of the teams. On another team was Ralph Guyette. He bet her a beer that he could get a better score that she. She wondered who this guy thought he was and accepted the bet. However, Ralph did best her score and demanded the beer. She was flabbergasted that a man would really make her pay for a beer. She had only enough money for her bus ride home, so said she couldn’t buy him a beer that night. She thought no more about it until the next week, when Ralph came trotting over and said he wanted to collect the beer. Again, she didn’t have the money, so he paid. That was the beginning of a long relationship.
At the Pentagon, Louise became the office manager, reviewing all papers leaving several offices for grammar, spelling, and format. She also had the keys to a top-secret filing cabinet on the Manhattan Project. In 1944 Ralph got orders to go overseas, and they wanted to marry before he left. They married at the Army War College on March 1, 1944, during Lent. Because of the Lenten rules, she could not wear a white dress, nor could they have a celebratory reception. As the date of Ralph’s departure neared, his Major said he was cancelling his orders because he needed Ralph to run his office in the Pentagon. So, they stayed in DC.
They soon began their family. Richard was born in Washington DC toward the end of the war. Ralph was scheduled to leave the army but had a hernia, and the army refused to let him muster out until he was healed. So, Louise went to St. Albans Bay, VT to live with Ralph’s Lebanese family, the Eliases. It was there she learned to cook Lebanese food, even Arabic bread (pita), which the family enjoyed hot from the oven for many years. Her love of cooking was one of the joys of her life. She once said that whenever she was feeling down, she would throw a dinner party. Indeed, she organized a supper club with her friends that lasted for decades.
The family moved to Glastonbury, CT, and Mary & Elise were born in Hartford. Louise and Ralph had a large garden, and one day Louise saw a woodchuck eating her vegetables and, feisty as ever, shot him through a screen door, being afraid the noise of opening it would scare it away. “That food was for the family!” she said.
Eventually, they moved to Rutland, VT where Ralph was a special investigator for the Internal Revenue Service. Two more children followed: Andy and Barbara. Louise joined the St Anne’s Society, which functioned like a like a PTO, and became a scout leader for both girls and boys. She also volunteered for the United Way, suggesting that they write letters for donations instead of the tradition of visiting people in person. They made the switch and increased their revenues. She also volunteered for hospice, was guardian ad litem for children, and briefly opened a real estate office in Rutland.
After retirement, Louise and Ralph visited Arizona searching for a relative in Flagstaff. They visited Green Valley and decided to spend time there in the winter. While driving back and forth from VT to AZ, Louise was the itinerary creator, navigator, and part time driver. They eventually moved there permanently to play golf, travel the west, party, and volunteer. She stayed on after Ralph died in 2007, after 63 years of marriage.
When she turned 90, she gave up her car saying, “No one that age should be driving!” At 97, she decided to move back to Vermont to be near family. She lived independently and learned the bus system, often going to Leunig’s for a Friday lobster roll. She also loved the lobster rolls at the North Hero House Pier Bar, eating her last one (of many) in the summer of 2023.
Since she loved seafood, her children brought her to Bleu for brunch on her 104th birthday. It was a wonderful meal with all her children and their spouses together with Louise for the last time. She fully expected to die in November, since everyone from her family had died in that month going back many decades. But Louise cheated November and passed away on January 26, 2024.
She had a full life of work, raising children, volunteering, playing duplicate bridge and travelling to such places as Bermuda, Hawaii, the Mediterranean on a cruise, Costa Rica, Mexico, Israel, Tuscany, and several times to Ireland. Her best trip, she said, was when she took her children and their spouses on a river cruise through southern Germany.
Louise is survived by her five children, Richard (Katie McKim) of Rutland, Mary and Elise (David Shiman) of South Burlington, Andy (Eileen) of Pittsford, VT, and Barbara Strait (Gary) of Monkton, VT. She has 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by her close friend Emily Delmonaco of Portland, Maine.
Memorial services will be held 11AM Saturday February 3, 2024, at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St, Rutland, VT. A reception will follow at Taso on Center, 22 Center Street, Rutland.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial services, and details about surviving family members. The tone is usually respectful and commemorates the life of the person who has passed away.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The purpose of an obituary is to formally announce the death of an individual, celebrate their life, inform the community of their passing, and provide details about any planned memorial services. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by a family member, a close friend, or sometimes by staff members at the funeral home. In certain cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance as a way to reflect their wishes and life's highlights.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are usually published within a few days following a person's death, allowing enough time for the relevant family or designated writers to gather necessary information and for print or digital platforms to schedule the obituary's release.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, place of residence, date of death, and cause of death if the family wishes to disclose that information. It also often contains a brief account of their life, career, passions, and notable accomplishments, as well as information about the surviving family members and details about the funeral or memorial services.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

No, publishing an obituary is not a legal requirement. It is a personal choice made by the family or the deceased (if they made preparations prior to their death), often used to ensure that friends and colleagues are informed of the death.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of someone's life and is often written in a compassionate and celebratory tone. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more formal announcement of a person's death, typically including only the essential details such as name, age, date of death, and information about the funeral service.

Can obituaries be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including newspaper websites, dedicated obituary websites, social media, and memorial websites. Online obituaries may reach a wider audience and can be easily shared among family and friends.

What should you do if you see a factual error in an obituary?

If you notice a factual error in an obituary, it's important to contact the newspaper or website's editorial staff or the family of the deceased as soon as possible. Corrections can usually be made quickly to ensure the obituary accurately honors the person's life and legacy.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

To begin writing an obituary, start by gathering facts about the deceased's life, including their full name, age, and significant life events. Decide on a respectful and honest tone that represents the person accurately and then write in a way that honors their life and contributions.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for obituaries, as they can vary from a few sentences to a lengthy narrative. The length often depends on the amount of information the family wishes to include and any potential restrictions from the publishing platform, such as newspaper column space.

How should the deceased's name appear in an obituary?

The deceased's name should be presented as they were commonly known, including any nicknames or formal titles if appropriate. It is also customary to include the person's maiden name, full first name, middle name or initial, and last name.

Should survivors be listed in an obituary?

It is customary to include a list of survivors in an obituary, particularly close family members such as spouses, children, grandchildren, siblings, and sometimes close friends or other relatives. This acknowledges their relationship to the deceased and can provide a sense of legacy and family history.

Can you mention pets in an obituary?

Yes, it is becoming more common to mention pets in obituaries, particularly if the deceased had a very close bond with their pets, as they are often considered part of the family too. This personal detail can provide a fuller picture of the deceased's life and affections.

What is an appropriate way to express condolences?

Condolences can be expressed in a variety of ways, such as sending a sympathy card, making a phone call, attending the funeral or memorial service, donating to a charity in the name of the deceased, or simply offering a kind and supportive message to the bereaved family.

Are there cultural differences in obituaries?

Yes, cultural differences can affect the content and style of obituaries. Different communities and religions have their own customs and traditions that may influence the way obituaries are written and what information is included or omitted. It's important to be respectful and mindful of these differences when writing or reading an obituary.

How do you handle sensitive information in an obituary, like a cause of death?

Handling sensitive information such as the cause of death in an obituary should be done with care and discretion. It's ultimately up to the family to decide whether to include this information. If mentioned, it should be done tactfully, and respectful language should be used.

Can you include photographs with an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a photograph with an obituary. This usually is a recent and clear portrait of the deceased, which can help readers to connect with the memory of the person and serves as a visual tribute to their life.

What if the deceased didn't want an obituary published?

If the deceased expressed wishes not to have an obituary published, it is important to respect those wishes. Alternatives to public obituaries can include private acknowledgments among family and friends or personal tributes shared in smaller, more intimate settings.

How can you make an obituary more personal?

To make an obituary more personal, include anecdotes, personal stories, or favorite sayings of the deceased. Share their unique qualities, hobbies, and passions. This turns the obituary into a celebration of the individual, rather than a mere list of facts.

Is there a protocol for updating an obituary?

If an update is necessary for an obituary, such as a change in the details of the memorial service or additional information about the deceased, the family should contact the publication or website to request an amendment. It is usually at the discretion of the publication to accommodate updates.
