Daniel Alan Craig - December 12, 1946 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Edgerton)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Alan Craig, age 77, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack in Marshfield, Wisconsin on Saturday, April 13, 2024. He was doing what he loved with people he loved. He was helping his grandson build an outhouse on his property in northern Wisconsin. His grandson, Justin Kish, is a first responder and had an ambulance there before he was even having chest pains. He was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted by helicopter to a hospital with a cardiac unit where he died, to the shock of his wife and family.
He and his wife, Lori Craig, were long-time residents of Southern California who relocated to Wisconsin in 2020 to be near their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dan and Lori had two sleepovers with their great grandchildren, Harrison and Ellie, the week before he died. He was digging a big, muddy hole with his grandson, Justin, and his great-grandson, Jackson, the day he died. He wouldn’t have had it any other way. He was happiest when he was helping someone with a project and even happier if that project was outside with his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.
Dan was enjoying a long, active retirement after a career in service for Volkswagen of America. He was a Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Navy and taught his kids to make their beds, be on time, and do the right thing. He was an avid computer and photography enthusiast and spent many years as the President of the Apple Valley Computer Club where he taught his retired friends and neighbors how to use their computers, edit their photos, and make videos about their vacations. He and Lori enjoyed long road trips and have visited all the National Parks in the United States where he would take pictures of wildlife and waterfalls and put his memories to his favorite music in a video to share with family and friends. He spent many years as the youngest guy in his motorcycle club in Apple Valley where they regularly took long rides to remote locations just to get lunch.
Dan will be terribly missed by Lori and his children, Carrie Kish and Jason Schelb. He has left his grandchildren and great grandchildren wonderful memories of fishing, building forts, learning how to fix things, and always being willing to help anyone with anything. He had the joy of being close with his grandchildren, Nathan Kish, Justin Kish, Andrew Kish, Dylan Kish, and Jaylee Schelb. His great-grandchildren, Harrison Kish, Ellie Kish, and Jackson Kish, were all crazy about him and loved having sleepovers, being picked up from school, and getting big hugs from their BeePaw.
The family will be celebrating his life and spreading his ashes at Carrie’s house on Bass Lake in Stoughton, Wisconsin on Saturday, July 6, 2024. We will be remembering him with his favorite things: family, fishing, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and a bonfire with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Leslie "Les" Haakenson - February 20, 1921 - December 05, 2023

Departed: 12/05/2023 (Edgerton)
Obituary Preview: Leslie "Les" Haakenson (1921-2023): A Life Well-Lived
On December 5, 2023, Leslie Einer Haakenson, departed this world peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. For 102 years, Les exemplified a life well-lived.
Les was a fixture in the lives of many, extending his love, friendship, and wit to family, friends, and neighbors. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, evident on the farm, at the factory, and in the countless home projects he undertook with a craftsman's precision. He also leaves a legacy of deep faith—first at Cooksville Lutheran Church and for decades at Central Lutheran Church in Edgerton, where he sang his heart out at every service and served as an usher and on the church council.
Les was always open to share stories over a coffee in the morning or a whiskey in the afternoon. His ability to strike up a conversation, rich with insight and peppered with humor, was unmatched. His passion for life was evident in his hobbies: fishing where he would patiently (most of the time!) wait for walleye to bite, woodworking where each stroke was a testament to his skill and his art, and reading, which opened worlds both close and far. A true Wisconsinite, his heart beat in sync with the Badgers and Packers. He wasn't just a fan—he was a part of their spirit and a proud owner of the Packers!
Yet, above all, Les was a family man. His heart belonged to his family. Each visit, each shared meal, each burst of laughter was a treasure he held close. He particularly rejoiced in hearing the latest adventures of his grandkids, in work, school, sports, and beyond. The love he shared without hesitation was the foundation of a legacy that will continue to shine brightly in our lives.
Les leaves behind a loving family: his daughter Diane Roang (David Gaarder), his grandson Sverre David Roang (Sara), his great-grandchildren Aliya Macdonald, Ezra Roang, and Isabel Roang, and his dear friend for over 25 years, Florence Scott. He joins in eternal rest his beloved wife Ruth (Larson), his parents Ole and Alice (Julseth), and his siblings Chester, Stanley, Morris, and Beulah.
Les Haakenson's story is not over—it continues through those he loved. His spirit, a blend of resilience and gentleness, will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the distinct privilege of knowing him and loving him in return.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Central Lutheran Church, Edgerton with Pastor Erik Jelinek officiating. Burial will follow a luncheon at Cooksville Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the church from 10AM until the start of services. Albrecht Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Edgerton are assisting the family. www.albrechtfuneralhomes.com Memorials may be made in his name to Central Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice. "In loving memory, we celebrate the remarkable life of Leslie Haakenson, a man who taught us the beauty of simple joys, the strength in kindness, and the richness of a life well-lived.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a published notice of a person's death, often accompanied by a brief biography and information about funeral services and memorial arrangements. Obituaries serve as a way to inform the community of the individual's passing and to celebrate their life.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. Some people even choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers, both print and online editions, as well as on dedicated memorial websites, social media, and funeral home webpages.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date of death, a summary of their life story, information about the immediate family, details of the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a photo. It may also include special messages, acknowledgments, or a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How does one submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the paper's obituary department for submission guidelines and fees. Provide the written obituary, adhering to any word count restrictions, and any desired photographs. The newspaper may edit the obituary for style or length.

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

Most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, which can vary widely depending on the publication's circulation, length of the obituary, and inclusion of photographs.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

While newspapers may verify the death with the funeral home, most obituaries are published as submitted and are not typically subject to rigorous fact-checking. It is important for the submitter to ensure the accuracy of the information.

How long after death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are commonly published within a few days of death to provide timely information about the funeral or memorial services. However, the exact timing can vary depending on the publication and family preferences.

Can an obituary be published if the funeral has already occurred?

Yes, obituaries can still be published after funeral services have taken place, especially as a way for distant friends and relatives to learn about the person's passing or to honor their memory.

What if the family prefers not to publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary is a personal choice, and there is no obligation to do so. Families may opt for a private way of informing friends and relatives, or sometimes, use only an online platform to communicate the news.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a simpler, shorter announcement of a person's death and the upcoming funeral details, often placed by the family or the funeral home. An obituary is more detailed and includes a biographical sketch of the deceased.

Can an obituary be too long?

Since many newspapers charge by length and have space limitations, obituaries can be too long for such purposes. It is important to follow the publication's guidelines. However, on personal memorial websites, the length can be as per the family's wishes.

How should the family decide what to include in an obituary?

Families should consider what the deceased would have wanted to share, and what information friends and the community might appreciate. It often includes milestones, personal interests, and meaningful relationships.

Is it necessary to include cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is optional and depends on the family's preference. Some families choose to share this information, especially if the deceased was a public figure or if it was a widely known fact.

How can one make an obituary more personal?

To personalize an obituary, families can include anecdotes, favorite quotes, hobbies or interests, volunteer work, achievements, and the impact the deceased had on those around them.

Should the obituary mention predeceased and surviving family members?

It is typical to list immediate family members who have predeceased the individual, as well as those who are surviving, to provide context and connections within the family.

Is it appropriate to request donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is quite common to request donations to a charity significant to the deceased or the family, often in lieu of flowers. This is usually mentioned towards the end of the obituary.

What should be done if a detail in an obituary is incorrect?

If an obituary contains an incorrect detail, contact the publication as soon as possible to issue a correction. Online obituaries can usually be updated quickly, but print corrections may be subject to the newspaper's schedule.

Can a family include religious or spiritual content in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include religious or spiritual references that reflect the beliefs and values of the deceased, such as scripture verses, prayers or blessings.

How can families ensure that the deceased's wishes are respected in the obituary?

Communicating with the deceased about their wishes prior to their passing, or following any instructions left behind in wills or end-of-life plans, can help ensure that the obituary respects their preferences.

While there are usually no legal implications to writing an obituary, it is important to avoid including sensitive personal information that could be misused, such as exact birthdates or addresses, to protect against identity theft.

What happens to online obituaries after a certain period?

Online obituaries, particularly those on newspaper websites, can remain accessible for varying periods depending upon the publication's policy. Some may offer permanent archiving, while others might remove notices after a set period. On dedicated memorial websites, obituaries usually remain indefinitely.
