She loved Jesus, family, Miranda Lambert, and all things Mardi Gras. Billie, we already miss your irreverent humor, your sparkling eyes, your unapologetic flirting, and the way you were yourself to everyone equally the same, no matter what. Your bright strong light will burn forever in our hearts, and we know you're sharing that light right now at the biggest party in heaven with your daddy and the other 2 McCann brothers. During your too-short 67 years, you were a nurse, a bartender, an avid sun worshipper, honorary member of the Harley Davidson Club, and beach babe in a bikini. There will never be another like you. You loved those you loved dearly with all of your heart, and we too love you so. We can't wait to see you again! In the words of your girl Miranda, and the tattoo on your right arm, you are our bluebird. We'll keep a light in our soul and a bluebird in our heart, and take you with us always everywhere, especially to the beach. Until We meet again ♥ Warm regards, the McCann "sisters"

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a public notice, usually published in newspapers or online, that reports the death of an individual. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial services, and can also include personal sentiments and a list of surviving family members.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary is more detailed and personal than a death notice. While both announce someone's passing, obituaries often include a biography, personal stories, and information about the life and legacy of the deceased. Death notices, on the other hand, are usually brief and factual, focusing on service details and survivors.

What are the key components of an obituary?

Typically, an obituary includes the full name of the deceased, their age, the date of their passing, and place of death. It may also contain a brief overview of their life, educational and professional background, achievements, personal anecdotes, information about the funeral services, and a list of surviving relatives.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals write their obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local newspapers, but in recent years, online platforms and social media have become common for sharing obituaries. Some families also choose to publish them on memorial websites or in publications relevant to the deceased's profession or interests.

How do I write an obituary?

To write an obituary, start by gathering key facts about the deceased, such as their full name, age, and date of death. Then, provide a summary of their life, highlighting important personal and professional milestones. Include information about the funeral services and any special messages from the family. Be sure to proofread the obituary for accuracy before publishing.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it is typically between 200 to 600 words. The length may depend on the publication's space constraints and the level of detail desired by the family.

What if I don't know all the details about the deceased?

It's okay if you don't have all the details. Focus on what you do know and the aspects that highlight the individual's life and legacy. You can also reach out to other friends or family members for more information.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there's no strict format, most obituaries follow a general structure:
- Introduction with the name and announcement of death
- Biographical sketch
- List of surviving family members
- Funeral, memorial, and/or burial information
- Special messages or acknowledgments
- End with the date of birth and death

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries in both print and online formats. A recent photograph or one from the deceased's prime is usually selected.

How do I ensure the obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

Maintain a respectful and sincere tone throughout the obituary. Focus on celebrating the life and achievements of the deceased, and avoid including anything that may be seen as controversial or hurtful to the family and friends.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published within a week after the death, though the timeline can vary depending on the family's wishes, the funeral service schedule, and the publication's deadlines.

Can I mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is optional and at the discretion of the family. Some families choose to include this information, especially if it relates to a cause or condition they wish to raise awareness for.

Should an obituary mention donations or charitable contributions?

If the family prefers donations to flowers or wishes to honor the deceased through charitable contributions, this information can be included in the obituary, giving readers the relevant details and preferences.

Are there cultural differences in obituaries I should be aware of?

Yes, cultural differences can affect how an obituary is written and what information is included. Research and respect cultural customs, or consult with someone knowledgeable to ensure the obituary is appropriate.

Is it necessary to include a list of all surviving relatives?

It is common to include immediate family members such as spouses, children, parents, and siblings. Extended family members can also be mentioned, but it's not necessary to list every relative unless the family prefers to do so.

What if I want to make corrections to an obituary after it has been published?

Contact the publication where the obituary was printed as soon as possible to request corrections. Online obituaries are typically easier to update than printed ones.

How do I handle negative aspects of the deceased's life in an obituary?

An obituary should focus on the positive aspects of a person's life. If certain negative elements are well-known, it’s generally best to address them with respect and restraint, if at all.

What is an appropriate way to end an obituary?

An obituary can be concluded with a meaningful quote, a few words of remembrance, or details about where and when the funeral or memorial services will be held. This final note should offer comfort and reflect the tone of the rest of the obituary.

Can I include a request for privacy in an obituary?

Yes, families may request privacy in the obituary, especially during a time of grief. Phrasing such as "The family kindly requests privacy during this time" can notify readers of their wishes.

In general, obituaries should avoid including defamatory, libelous, or false information. Always write with integrity and check with the publication's guidelines or legal limitations that might apply.
